  • The 'Uncharted' PS4 collection isn't just a quick-and-dirty port

There's no doubt that Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection is an attempt to rekindle interest in the franchise (and score some extra sales) ahead of Uncharted 4's release next year. However, that doesn't mean that Bluepoint Games' PlayStation 4 port of the first three Uncharted games is a simple cash-in. The team at Digital Foundry has conducted a shot-by-shot comparison of the anthology's trailer with the respective moments in the PS3 games, and it's clear that there are many, many little visual upgrades (beyond just the jumps to 1080p and 60 frames per second) that add up to a lot. More detailed objects are everywhere, lighting is more natural and cinematic depth-of-field effects occasionally pop up -- just take a look at Nathan and Sully in the PS4 edition (pictured at left) versus its PS3 counterpart (right). There are even elements that weren't there at all before. The games treat fire and dust differently than they did in the past, and you'll see new details like low-hanging clouds.

Drake gets into some vehicular mayhem of his own, knocking out wooden supports from terraces that overlook alleys. The scale feels much bigger, however, based on the onstage demo tonight from Sony's media briefing. The whole time, Drake's accompanied by Sully, offering comic relief, moral support and hopefully a neckbrace to help prevent whiplash.

After Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was pushed into 2016, PlayStation 4 owners hungry for supernatural-tinged archaeological adventure, adequate gunplay and roguish quips were braced for a disappointing year. Then with the easy charm of a cad with his shirt only half-tucked in, Sony made a reassuring announcement on Thursday. Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection will bring all three PlayStation 3 games in the series to the new console with a bevy of technological upgrades this fall, making the wait for Uncharted 4 that much easier.

  • Uncharted 4 gameplay trailer includes mini family reunion

With all the time Nathan Drake has put into learning more about supposed ancestors, you would think he'd take more time to acknowledge family members that are actually still alive. The above extended gameplay clip of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End fixes one such oversight, filling in an overlooked, brotherly branch of Nathan's family tree after a bout of the standard "climb, shoot, almost die" Uncharted gameplay. Nathan's brother will be played by Troy Baker (Joel in The Last of Us, Pagan Min in Far Cry 4), with the sibling apparently sharing Nathan's unwavering dedication to sniffing out treasure. We'll be able to follow the brothers (and Sully) through the jungle (and figure out who's seeking revenge) when Uncharted 4: A Thief's End arrives on PS4 in 2015. [Image: Naughty Dog]

Uncharted's swashbuckling adventures already looked good on the PlayStation 3, so how will they improve on the PS4? Quite a lot, apparently. Naughty Dog has just shown off the first gameplay from Uncharted 4 at PlayStation Experience, and we won't lie: it's gorgeous. Characters look so good in-game that you'd think you were watching a cutscene, while even cliff faces (and there are many cliff faces) appear all too real. You'll also see some new game mechanics that promise to inject new life into the series, including grappling hooks and pinions that get you across seemingly impossible challenges. It's a shame that you'll still have to wait until 2015 to play, but this preview suggests that it could be worth the wait.

Uncharted hero Nathan Drake will officially make his silver screen debut on June 10, 2016, according to Sony Pictures. According to Deadline, that release date was originally earmarked for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, but the studio has decided to delay that film to 2018. "June 10 is a great date for Uncharted," said Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group. "It's just the right place for this exciting action-adventure film." Despite this newly-revealed launch date, the Uncharted film has yet to cast an actor for the role of Nathan Drake, though Deadline believes Sony is once again trying to persuade Mark Wahlberg to sign on. As we reported earlier this year, King of Kong director Seth Gordon has been tapped to helm the adaptation, though, knowing Hollywood, there's still plenty of time for that to change. [Image: Sony]

Like a lot of movies based on games, the Uncharted adaptation has been years in the not-much-making. Now, director Seth Gordon sounds unnervingly confident filming will begin around the start of next year. "I think very early next year. That's the plan," Gordon told Zap2it. The King of Kong director added, "That's like tomorrow, essentially, because the prep is so complicated for that movie."

You knew a new Uncharted was coming to the PlayStation 4 -- it was inevitable, really. And tonight at E3, Sony just capped off its E3 press event with a teaser trailer of Naughty Dog's next title in the franchise: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. We didn't get much beyond a short scene of the series' hero Nathan Drake waking up bruised and walking through a jungle, but judging by the game's title, this could also be the last we ever see of Drake. Take note, the snippet of footage Sony showed was apparently captured directly from the PS4, so prepare for some absolutely gorgeous visuals. Expect to see the next-gen title arrive sometime in 2015.

  • Last of Us leads heading up Uncharted PS4 after Hennig's departure

Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann, co-leads on multiple-award-winning The Last Of Us, will be taking charge for the next game in the Uncharted series, Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells revealed to Game Informer. Straley, who served as game director, and Druckmann, who served as creative director on The Last of Us, will be taking over for previous Uncharted writer/creative director Amy Hennig, who departed Naughty Dog for Star Wars-ier pastures at Visceral Games earlier this year. Try not to worry too much that the change in leadership will make Uncharted on PS4 as dark as Naughty Dog's fungal apocalypse drama; both Druckmann and Straley have experience working on the PS3 Uncharted games. Druckmann helped pen Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, while Straley was game director for Uncharted 2 and art director for the original Uncharted. In other words: this won't be exactly ... unexplored territory for the developers. ... Wait, did we mess that joke up? [Image: Naughty Dog]

One of the talents that helped define the last generation of console games has a new home. Amy Hennig, the creative director and lead writer of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and its PS3 sequels recently joined the team at Visceral Games (best known for the Dead Space series), where she'll serve as creative director for its in-development Star Wars title. This comes after she abruptly ended her decade-long tenure at developer Naughty Dog early last month. At first, the idea of Visceral working on a game set in that galaxy far, far away almost suggested something in the vein of survival horror, given the studio's pedigree. Hennig's hiring throws a bit of a curve-ball to expectations, though, especially with her expertise in creating a believable group of rag-tag adventurers; her style is pretty much a perfect fit for Star Wars. We likely won't see this game for awhile yet (especially considering DICE's in-the-works Battlefront sequel was teased last year), but this news is almost enough to make us forget that the travesty of Dead Space 3 ever happened.

  • Minecraft PS3 update adds blocky skins from Uncharted, Heavy Rain, more

When the PlayStation Network is next updated, those playing Minecraft on the PlayStation 3 will find two new skin packs available for purchase. One features koalas and cavemen, while the other focuses on the most famous faces of the PlayStation 3. According to the PlayStation.blog, the Battle And Beasts skin pack will allow players to dress as koala bears, cavemen, an ocotopus or a particularly angular Cleopatra. The other pack, simply titled "Skin Pack 1", is aimed at "hardcore PlayStation fans" and features Minecraft versions of Uncharted lead Nathan Drake, larcenous raccoon Sly Cooper, "folks from Heavy Rain" and "some Killzone dudes." We'd like to be more specific on who exactly will be representing Heavy Rain and Killzone, but neither Sony nor Minecraft creator Mojang offer further clarification. Likewise lacking from the announcement are the price points that will be attached to those two DLC skin packs, though territorial Sony devotees will be pleased to hear that Skin Pack 1 is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 incarnation of Minecraft. Uncharted writer and creative director Amy Hennig parted ways with Naughty Dog this week, and the circumstances surrounding her departure aren't clear. Following an IGN report claiming Hennig left her post on March 3, Sony confirmed with the site that she's no longer employed at the studio. "We can confirm that Amy Hennig has left Naughty Dog," A Sony representative told IGN. "Amy has made significant contributions to the game industry and we appreciate all she has done for Naughty Dog. The development timeline of Uncharted will not be impacted." Hennig served as the creative director for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, and she also penned the script for the three games. She was understood to be reprising her role for the Uncharted PS4 game. Neither Hennig nor Naughty Dog have commented, but IGN sources claim the writer, a Naughty Dog veteran of more than ten years, was "forced out" by The Last of Us directors Neil Druckman and Bruce Straley, and the pair may take over the Uncharted series. Hennig worked with Druckman and Straley on the first two Uncharted games, before the two men switched to developing The Last of Us. [Image: @amy_hennig]

David Vigil is a leathersmith and owner of That Vigilante, where he sells replicas of gear seen in Naughty Dog games. Nathan Drake's belt buckle, holster and wristband from the Uncharted series are all available, as is Joel's backpack from The Last of Us. Vigil is also asking for the community's financial help on GoFundMe as he battles stage two pancreatic cancer. The fundraising campaign's deadline is November 18, with a goal of $47,000. At the time of writing, the amount raised is just shy of $9,500. This is the second time Vigil has faced cancer, and the second time he has turned to crowdfunding for help. Last year, he raised $26,464 on Indiegogo. Vigil is offering up his work as reward incentives as well; for $500, backers will receive one of every product available on That Vigilante. Should funding fail to reach the full $47,000 goal, Vigil will still get to keep whatever funds have been raised.

Sony didn't waste any time at its PlayStation 4 launch event, coming right out of the gate with news from Naughty Dog about two of the biggest franchises. Uncharted is coming to the PlayStation 4, and while not much information has been revealed, there is a short teaser trailer complete with vengeful voiceover and treasure map for you to watch. For your PS3 gaming needs, the developer also showed off new "Left Behind" single player DLC coming to its hit The Last of Us, with Ellie apparently taking over the lead role. There's a video for that one too, check out both embedded after the break, or head straight for the live stream to see what else is coming up.

Instead of requesting gifts for the second anniversary of the Uncharted 3 launch, developer Naughty Dog has decided to reward players by making each of the game's multiplayer map packs available for free. Pay a visit to the PlayStation Network store and you'll find that the three DLC map packs released for Uncharted 3 now feature zero-dollar price tags. Naughty Dog has also reduced the price of a number of multiplayer items found on the PlayStation Network, though that part of the deal will expire on November 4. While this celebration is meant to send the game into retirement with a bang, there is still one more piece of content headed for Uncharted 3. The next time you fire up the game, your PlayStation 3 will download a patch that includes the new "Dry Docks" multiplayer map, as well as numerous balance changes, all of which have been helpfully outlined on the developer's website.

  • Hollywood producer Avi Arad talks Uncharted, Mass Effect, Metal Gear films

The Uncharted, Mass Effect, and Metal Gear Solid films are all coming along, albeit slowly, Hollywood producer Avi Arad revealed to Kotaku. Arad has had his hand in many successful comic book adaptations, such as Blade, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Iron Man. Now, he believes that it's time video game adaptations have their turn in the spotlight, and who better to lead that charge than handsome treasure hunter, Nathan Drake? "I think Uncharted will be very successful," Arad said. "Now, the script has a lot of character [and] I think that has a shot at being the first one [to succeed]." The Uncharted film does not have a projected release date, and is currently listed as "announced" on IMDB. Arad also said that when he looks at Metal Gear Solid, he sees the story of Cain and Abel. It's pretty obvious Arad meant the remark not to be taken literally, but it does make the Cain and Abel story seem just a bit cooler if you imagine them as cloned super-soldiers with giant, nuclear dinosaur robots. Arad told Kotaku he would be sitting down with Kojima soon to discuss the film and negotiate further details, but its release is likely three or more years away. Lastly, Arad touched on the Mass Effect film, which is "getting there," though the final release is likely five or six years away. "It's a big idea, that we, humans, are the least developed, the least trusted, it's an interesting mirror image of our world, we are the aliens now," Arad said.

  • Uncharted 3 multiplayer celebrates the holidays with free items and map

Naughty Dog is getting a little nuts with the holiday goodies this year. They're giving away a free new map and some free custom avatar items for Uncharted 3 multiplayer, and the look of these freebies makes us wonder if there's been a little too much egg nog drinking around the offices over there in Santa Monica. The goofy "present head" hat above is only the beginning - there's also a t-shirt with Naughty Dog Co-President Christophe Balestra as an elf that everyone gets for free. And the wildest thing is a "Block Mesh Lab map," made completely of polygons by former Naughty Dog Richard Lemarchand (who's now teaching interactive media at USC). It's quite funky, especially when you imagine the relatively realistic forms of Nathan Drake and friends wandering around it with guns. All of these items are free for all players in the game right now until January 8, after which they'll only be available in the weekly tournaments, so pick them up now. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good Nate!%Gallery-173694%
