The Uncharted movie has been in development hell since, oh... forever. There's a new glimmer of hope, though: Sony has asked filmmaker Joe Carnahan to write the latest script, according to Variety. What drew him to the project was an interest in archaeology and how staggeringly popular the franchise is.

Ready for another adventure with Nathan Drake? While you wait for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End to hit store shelves, Sony hopes you'll check out its new mobile game featuring the plucky explorer. And no, it's not another endless runner. Instead, Sony has made a grid-based puzzled game called Uncharted: Fortune Hunter, which has you pulling levers and shooting barrels to find hidden treasure. It's available on Android and iOS, and the aim is to complete each puzzle in a limited number of moves, thereby gaining keys to open chests discovered by Victor "god damn" Sullivan.

Traveling the world in Uncharted 4's ridiculous photo mode

Aside from minor tweaks for brightness and contrast, everything in this National Geographic-inspired gallery was captured entirely within the photo mode of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. And while the images don't contain any story spoilers from the first 11 chapters of the game, if you're looking to go in completely blind, you should avert your eyes. Amazing visuals are part of the Uncharted series' DNA, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is no exception. The difference here is that the previous three installments didn't feature a photo mode when they debuted on PlayStation 3. And to be clear, this isn't even the first PS4 game with a photo mode -- that would be Infamous: Second Son -- but this is the first one that I want to keep playing. That's because taking screenshots here is as fun as working through the narrative itself.

For big studio games, downloadable content is often announced before the title even launches to keep the hype going. Naughty Dog's long-awaited Uncharted 4: A Thief's End launches on May 10th, but instead of charging fees for each content expansion, the studio will release all maps and gameplay modes for free.

Sony's President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has just announced that "a number of copies" of the upcoming game Uncharted 4: A Thief's End have been stolen in transit. A few copies have surfaced ahead of the game's official release on May 10th -- British site Videogamer reported yesterday that discs were appearing at second-hand stores in the country. Not acknowledging the irony, Yoshida says "Sony is continuing to to work with the police to resolve the matter, which is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation." He urges gamers to be vigilant for potential spoilers resulting from the theft, and says it will be "worth the wait" till May 10th.

The Last of Us and the Uncharted series are known for their cinematic feel and spectacular set pieces, so it's not surprising that Hollywood wants to adapt them for the big screen. If you're sold on the idea of a live-action search for El Dorado, or a painstaking journey across a Clicker-infested America, we've got some bad news however. In an interview with IGN, Neil Druckmann, creative director at Naughty Dog, hinted that both projects are in trouble. Regarding a movie version of The Last of Us, he said:

If you're waiting for the next installment of the Uncharted series, get ready to wait just a little bit longer than you might have planned. While its open beta may be just days away, tonight Sony announced that Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will launch on May 10th. That's instead of the plan to launch April 26th, which was a delay from the previously announced release date of March 18th. According to Sony it's still on track to go gold for disc manufacturing later this month, but the delay is to allow for more manufacturing time.

Sony is likely to open the Uncharted 4: A Thief's End multiplayer beta to everyone in the world this weekend. The offering was previously limited to folks who'd bought the Nathan Drake Collection, but that restriction has now been relaxed. The folks over at Eurogamer found a download client for the beta over in the European PlayStation Store, which has since been pulled. According to the site, the testing will kick off in Europe at 5pm GMT (12PM ET) on March 4th and run through to late in the day on March 6th. Naturally, the beta will be rolled out at different times across the globe, but we'd put good money on you getting in on the action once you've eaten your dinner on Friday night.

With Uncharted 4: A Thief's End just a matter of weeks away Sony has released a new trailer. For a story trailer, it's... pretty light on story. But it at least offers some rough ideas on the nature of the adventure. Oh, and did we mention it looks incredible?

The premise of college is that it's going to prepare you with what you need to survive in a real-world work environment, but whether or not it fulfills that is another matter altogether. To that end, the University of Southern California has launched its own publishing label for video games in an effort to help students experience every aspect of making a game -- all the way to getting it in the hands of people outside of academia and onto PCs, PlayStations and Xboxes. USC Games Publishing's Tracy Fullerton tells Wired that the imprint is akin to the MIT Press. "These are not books that are going to necessarily be on The New York Times best-seller list, but these are the books that are important, that need to be out there in the zeitgeist."

It's always a little awkward when a well-intended Christmas gift is a bit off target. But it's down right cruel what happened to little Scott Lundy from Wakefield, MA. After (we imagine) weeks, maybe months, of anticipation and avoiding the naughty list, Lundy was rewarded with a PlayStation 4 under the Christmas tree. Or so he thought. Instead of unboxing a sick next-gen console (his parents opted for the Teen-rated Uncharted bundle), Lundy found a PS4-shaped bit of wood. What's worse, instead of a quick start guide to read, the malcontent penned a surly seasonal greeting.

If you're itching to experience what has been described as Nathan Drake's final chapter, you'll have to sit tight for just a little bit longer. Developer Naughty Dog has announced another delay for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, this time pushing it back from March 18th to April 26th in the US, April 27th across Europe and April 29th in the UK. The extra few weeks, according to creative director Neil Druckmann and game director Bruce Straley, are needed to give "several key sequences" more polish.

Video game tie-ins shouldn't feel 'cheap'

It used to be that if you loved a video game, your options for showing it beyond buying the cartridge or disc were pretty limited. Now there's a whole cottage industry for gaming fandom. Want a rad vinyl soundtrack for a hyper-violent indie game? Say no more. How about an evocative statue showcasing the duality of a game's strong, female protagonist? You're covered there, too.But for every one of the former, there were seemingly a dozen tasteless cash-ins. When these brand extensions are done right, we wind up with heartfelt keepsakes or ways to keep a game in our lives while we're away from the controller. But when a company blows it, you get crap like tacky game-branded mini-fridges.

We didn't know the specifics of exactly when the Uncharted 4: A Thief's End multiplayer beta would launch before, but that's changed. Nathan Drake's online adversarial adventures, and, by extension, yours, begin at 5 PM GMT (12 PM Eastern) tomorrow for European folks. Domestically, we'll have to wait for Friday. We've reached out to Sony for exact timing of when the test phase will go live in the US and will update this post should the company respond. Remember, you still need a copy of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection to access the beta at all.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday may be behind us now, but Sony wants to keep people's shopping momentum going. The tech company today announced two PlayStation 4 bundles at a new low price: $300 each, albeit for a limited time. First up, there's the The Nathan Drake Collection version, which includes a 500GB console and three remastered titles from the Uncharted franchise. Your other option is the Star Wars: Battlefront bundle, and this comes with the Standard Edition of EA's newly released game, a code to download four classic Star Wars titles, as well as a 500GB PS4 model. If you missed out on deal these past few days, this could be your chance to save cash on Sony's console. Both bundles will be available starting on Sunday, December 6th, through the 19th.

I am the 80 percent. Let me explain: Sony recently released a remastered collection of the Uncharted series for the PlayStation 4. The games were all critically acclaimed, with Uncharted 2: Among Thieves ranking among the best games of the last decade, but developer Naughty Dog says that 80 percent of PS4 owners have never played them. I'm part of that group, and I figured it was high time to catch up with one of the most lauded trilogies of the last decade. Now that I'm in the thick of Nathan Drake's adventures, I'm going to answer one question: If you've never played Uncharted, are these games worth your time?

Developer Naughty Dog's games have always had a flair for the cinematic and that's due in large part to their presentation. The studio takes a minimalistic approach to how it delivers information to the player, eschewing ugly on-screen means of directing you where to go by using filmic techniques like smart scene composition and color to subtly guide the players from one area to the next. In the video below, YouTuber Mark Brown explores Uncharted 3's opening, breaking down how Naughty Dog pretty masterfully keeps players on the right track during the rooftop chase sequence without it feeling claustrophobically linear.

PlayStation doesn't have an official mascot character, but if it did, developer Naughty Dog's Nathan Drake would probably fit the bill. Much like Microsoft did last year with Halo: The Master Chief Collection to get fans ready for Halo 5: Guardians on Xbox One, Sony's gone back and revamped the three main Uncharted games and put them into Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection to prep folks for next spring's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End on PlayStation 4. How do the eight, six and four year old games hold up? And was the remastering really necessary? Tune in on this post, Twitch.tv/joystiq (if you'd like to join us in chat) or the Engadget Gaming homepage at 6pm Eastern / 3pm Pacific as myself and Sean Buckley find out.

Sony is cutting the base price of its PlayStation 4 from $399.99 to $349.99 including a game. The drop has been heavily rumored following a similar cut in Japan last month. The new prices come into force tomorrow with the release of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, as you'll be able to pick up a PS4 bundled with the game. Following that, the next scheduled $349.99 bundle drops in mid-November with Star Wars Battlefront. The cut also applies in Canada with prices starting from CAD429.99, as the chart below illustrates.

Uncharted 4 won't arrive until 2016, but the forthcoming Nathan Drake Collection should keep you happy until it does. The remastered versions of the first three Uncharted games are launching in the first week of October, but if that seems like an eternity away, then help is at hand. The PlayStation Blog has revealed that the single player demo for the title will land on the store a week earlier, on September 29th. Of course, the key reason to buy the product is that you'll be able to take part in the Uncharted 4 multiplayer beta that's scheduled for December 4th through the 13th. Sony has also revealed to Eurogamer that European Nathan Drake fans will be able to snag a 500GB and 1TB PS4 bundle with the collection thrown in, the former setting you back £299.99 and the latter priced at £329.99.
