Volkswagen unveils next-gen Golf and its hybrid variants
After months of teasing, the eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golf has been unveiled. The sleeker design doesn't stray too far from the vehicle's core look. But like our moms always told us, it's what inside that counts and the new Golf has a lot going on under the shell.
Electric SUV will include a 5G link to connected cities
How do you stand out in a sea of EV startups? By leaping on every tech buzzword possible, apparently. Human Horizons has introduced the HiPhi 1, a luxury electric SUV that could make even the Model X seem modest. It's reportedly the first production car with a 5G link to connected cars and cities, for a start. While it'll work with LTE, it might just have a next-gen connection before your phone does.
Toyota brings Alexa and CarPlay to 2018 Camry and Sienna
Good news: you don't have to buy a brand new Toyota (or score a very lightly used model) just to get modern mobile conveniences. The automaker has announced that you can add Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay (sorry, no Android Auto) to the 2018 Camry and Sienna. If you're itching for an upgrade, you can book an appointment for an installation at a dealership. While this isn't going to be much consolation if you're driving another model, this could prove a treat if you've been kicking yourself for buying a Toyota a little too soon.
Honda's smart intersection tells drivers what's around the corner
As the Honda Pilot is about to enter the intersection a specially built HUD (heads-up display) flashes an orangish yellow with an image of an ambulance. Seconds later an actual ambulance that, moments before, the driver could not see barrels though the intersection with its lights on (no sirens). We watch the emergency vehicle drive off and continue through the intersection.
All Cadillacs will have semi-autonomous features starting in 2020
Every model Cadillac sells will be available with semi-autonomous features starting in 2020. The luxury automaker's Super Cruise system for hands-free highway driving will be available across its entire model line in two years; currently, it's exclusive to the CT6 sedan. After 2020, the feature will make its way to other GM lines including Chevrolet, Buick and GMC, according to TechCrunch.
Most of Toyota's cars will talk to each other by 2025
Toyota's first vehicles that communicate with each other will be up for sale in the US starting in 2021. By the mid-2020s, "most" of Toyota and Lexus' lineup will feature Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) the company says. Since 2015, the automaker has installed the tech in around 100,000 cars in its native Japan, according to Reuters. The automaker pointed toward its automatic emergency braking systems pledge from 2015 as proof of intent. Now, Toyota says 92 percent of its US sales are cars with its Toyota Safety Sense or Lexus Safety Sense braking tech as standard equipment.
