Some found it juvenile and immature, but Slackerz writer Scott Smith (who created the comic along with artist Scott Hepting) explained that his winning comic was inspired by actual events and that, yes, scribbling your 'a,' 'r,' and 't' can lead to some naughty results in Brain Age. Despite the objection by some, Smith's comic was overwhelmingly voted webcomic of the week.Second place went to Dueling Analogs and third place was claimed by Rooster Teeth in their first ever appearance on the wrapup. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week![Update: credit given to Hepting for drawing Slackerz comic.]

Proving that the quality of clever observation can trump the importance of finished, colorful artwork, Scott Johnson's Extra Life took first place in this week's webcomic wrapup for understanding the real winner of the so-called "console wars." Second place goes to Ctrl+Alt+Del and third place goes to 2P Start. (Yes, Ray and Tim, we also wouldn't be surprised.) After an insightful episode of South Park that explained the relationship between bunnies, eggs, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, we decided to do some of our own research into the history of the seemingly bizarre Easter rituals. After becoming bored with that, we thought about easter eggs in the virtual sense -- i.e. those hidden treats found on CDs, DVDs and video games.Celebrate Easter by telling us your favorite virtual easter eggs; while you're thinking, check out our picks for the week's best game-related webcomics. Mario and Sonic team up, so it's time to draw some old blood. For predicting future issues of Sonic and Mario Olympics -- specifically for the final scene in the comic, as cited by many readers -- Fanboys Online earns the rather dubious honor of webcomic of the week.Second place goes to Penny Arcade's look into the shady underbelly of GameStop and third place was nabbed by the recently-returned Press Start to Play. Scott Ramsoomair's VG Cats has a new page: a Metal Gear Solid MySpace profile for "David" Snake (screen name solidsnake34). Some of the jokes are subtle; we recommend a viewing or two of Metal Gear Awesome for some clarity. (MGA may in fact not help at all, but we still recommend viewing it for a few chortles.) In case you're wondering and are too lazy to do some minor investigation, every link on the page directs you to VG Cats' real index. If you're viewing this after April 1, the page may be gone; feel free to use this gallery below as a time capsule for the event.%Gallery-2382%

  • Weekly Webcomic Wrapup: little big edition

    03.31.2007

There's somewhat of a correlation between using the descriptive little and the premise of big, enormous landscapes of creativity. Of course, LittleBigPlanet is one prime example. Recall even Little Nemo, an old children's book which spawned a decent licensed video game, The Dream Master. (We wouldn't mind seeing that on the Virtual Console, Capcom.) And we find Mario Galaxy so strangely familiar because the concept of jumping between a vast array of mini-planets is a concept we remember from Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince). This has nothing to do with webcomics; here are our picks for the best gaming comics. Be sure to vote for your favorite, and let us know of any gems we missed this week! Juice, that was a good one Hey! Listen! Dueling Analogs, for splicing what makes the Xbox great with what makes ... well, we don't want to go there either way, has been crowned the winner of this week's webcomic wrapup.Second place goes to still-newbie 2P Start and third place went perennial favorites (and our rocketeering racketeering partners) Penny Arcade. 03.24.2007

Instead of trying to fill this part with meaningless dribble (at which we rock), we've decided to take a look at the comic world through two articles from this week's stream of mainstream media. Our first article is a blurb from the Wall Street Journal's Career Journal, which recently highlighted what it would entail to choose comic-book artist as a career. Two suggestions: (1) be sure to attend conventions and network with publishers, show off your work and (2) make sure your work doesn't suck. The other piece comes from Time magazine that discusses the proliferation of webcomics. It even includes complimentary blurbs about Penny Arcade and PvP Online, credited with being one of the first webcomics. Congratulations guys! Now here are some of our picks for the week's best game-related webcomics, be sure to vote for your favorite!* Rejected Wii channels Check. It. Out. Mondayitis, or Blue Monday, or "having a case of the Mondays" is a phrase for describing the mundaneness of returning from a work-free weekend to an 8-hour shift. Wikipedia credits the term with the film Office Space, but we're pretty sure the phrase (and certainly the feeling) originates from a much earlier time. The webcomic wrapup is celebrating Mondayitis, having missed its Saturday date due to personal reasons. The results will subsequently be determined on Thursday. Here our are picks for the week's best game-related webcomics; be sure to vote for your favorite! It takes guts to admit something good about a company who you've lost faith in so long ago. That's just what the Penny Arcade crew tackled in their strip relating to the recent PlayStation 3 announcements, winning best game-related webcomic of the week. Special thanks to Jerry "Tycho" Holkins, who was kind enough to stop for a quick chat at GDC last week. Second place goes to the comic we were most tipped off to, the Perry Bible Fellowship, and third place was claimed by Extra Life. A note about Tip of the Sword. While we thought the MMO joke was funny, we really loved the Halo gag more. Unfortunately, we were of the mindset that we picked that strip last week -- blame it on the jet lag from GDC. Apologies to Auker for not using the comic he submitted. Still, we thought the MMO one was funny. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any gaming comics you stumble upon this week!

Before we get with the post, a note of thanks to all the commenters that, until this morning at least, were very civil and kind in their discussion of this week's webcomic wrapup. Sure, we've all thought about the dirty things Wario would make us do if Smooth Moves was not an all-ages Nintendo title. VG Cats' Scott Ramsoomair makes the latest crack on the joke and takes top titles. Second place goes to the Penny Arcade Sony satires, while third was apprehended by Scott Johnson of Extra Life. Last week we got a little bit bloated and decided to sign up for a crash diet. We now welcome you to the smaller, most lightweight webcomic wrapup! For those who did not make the wrapup today, especially the avid supporters who are continuously letting us know of their comic updates, know that we still love you as we love all of our children, but that this week we wanted to go from one extreme to the other in search of that happy medium. It's nothing personal and you don't look fat in that dress. Here are our picks, however few, for the week's best webcomic, be sure to vote for your favorite! So long, King Bowser (part one, two) It's a Sony world and we're just living with it Smooth moves * Unicorns and kittens (guest strip) Analyze this TurboGrafx still has a chance In loving memory of the Crate Review System Procured spoon * Note: followers of the wrapup might find this strip familiar to a Fanboys Online strip from some time back. It's not plagiarism, it's just a broad and easy-to-satire subject matter. [Update: Fanboys Online Scott has written a great piece defending VG Cats Scott in the comments below. Also, take note of Level 99's similar joke and VG Cats' own public admittance of the coincidence, as well as an explanation as to why this week's comic replaced the Lost Planet gag.]

In the event of a tie, the supreme dictator has the right to choose which comic he deems most worthy, and therefore I am deigning the rare victor Fanboys Online the best webcomic of the week over the often favorite VG Cats (Sorry, Scott 1, but Scott 2 doesn't nearly get the same amount of recognition.) Third place goes to Dueling Analogs' clever mashup of some of our favorite games.Last week's list was over-indulgent, and we intend to purge it of its gluttonous weight and trim according to quality. We have a better idea of what the readers enjoy, but we will ultimately leave the selection up to supreme dictators (read: us). We promise to always showcase the little guys as much as possible, so as not to become a perpetual fistfight amongst the top 5 gaming comics. With that said, thanks to everyone who voted and be sure to let us know of any game-related comics you stumble upon this week!

True, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton's $1,200 boast has been taken somewhat out of context, but it does make for some excellent satire. Enter Penny Arcade's Tycho and Gabe, whose comic earned the not-dubious-at-all award for best game-related webcomic of the week.Rounding up second and third place are Dueling Analogs and VG Cats, respectively.Congratulations to perennial entry RPG-TV, who is celebrating its one year anniversary. According to the comic's creators there will be guest strips aplenty, starting with Digital Unrest's Chris Simmons' comic. Other guest artists promised include the minds behind Dueling Analogs, Fanboys-Online, Boot_Error "and many more whom I cant mention here without making this sentence long and unwieldy."As mentioned in the comments on Saturday, all those comics were sent to us via the tip line will be included this week. Thanks to everyone who voted and be sure to let us know of any gaming comics you stumble upon this week!(Note: $64,800 is equivalent to 54 PlayStation 3 sightings.)

  • Joystiq profiles Extra Life's Scott Johnson

Scott Johnson's Extra Life is a gaming strip that, much like Penny Arcade, is equal parts comic and blog. Johnson's embrace of the Internet and new media has put Extra Life into territories such as blogging, podcasting, and vidcasting. Johnson also contributed some spiffy Joystiq-themed banners for our trip to E3 last year. Chatting with us via e-mail, Johnson explains that there is, in fact, life outside of World of Warcraft.Who is the Scott Johnson outside of Extra Life? You mean my "Regular Life"? I am a 37-year old marketing director for a small web company in Salt Lake City. Happily married with three great kids. A video game freak at heart, beginning back in the 80's when I helped my Dad maintain three arcades and a burgeoning gaming business. People ask where I got hooked on gaming, and I tell them it in my basement, with free play turned on, burning the night away on Missile Command, Pac-Man and Burgertime, to name just a few. I was rather popular with the neighbors back then, as you might guess.
