The readers have spoken. The rarely gaming-centric Lucid TV, in its first-ever appearance on the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, was voted number one by a wide margin. Congratulations to John Keogh, who was gracious enough to comment on the post.Second place goes to Dueling Analogs and third place was Wonder Mark, the other old-fashioned newcomer. We wouldn't have found most of these strips if it wasn't for you, dear reader, so be sure to let us know of any gaming webomics you stumble upon this week. Thanks to everyone who voted!

Dear Readers,I'll make a deal with you: Penny Arcade will stay in, with the respective news post also linked, if you promise to check out the lesser known comics, too. They're on top for a reason -- consistent quality -- but that doesn't mean others can't dethrone them every now and then. Thanks to everyone, especially other webcomic artists, who contributed to the discussion on Wednesday.Love,Your Fearless LeaderP.S. • Joystiq asks: should Penny Arcade be in the webcomic poll?

    12.06.2006

Since its inception just over a year ago, the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup has always had issues with Penny Arcade's inclusion. We have heard both sides of the argument, both for and against their use in the webcomic poll, and we always decide to keep them in the running -- 'tis but a silly poll, anyways. However, we have talked with an unlikely proponent for possibly keeping comic out of the weekly poll: Gabe from Penny Arcade. On Tuesday, Gabe left a comment on our WWW post suggesting that they're not a webcomic as much as they are "game news and opinion site. Part of it is a news post and part of it is a comic strip." Speaking more on the subject with Joystiq, Gabe (also known as Mike Krahulik, shh) told us that "if you feel like people are voting for PA just because it's PA and that's not what you want then feel free to take us out of the equation." We want to be able showcase as many game-related webomics as possible, big and small, and as long as that is accomplished then we don't care. However, after Gabe's response we decided to reopen the debate: is Penny Arcade hurting the smaller comics on the poll -- or, more importantly, is Penny Arcade even classified as a webcomic, seeing as their news posts / blog entries are equally as important? It's important to note that, despite PA's inclusion, it does not always finish in the top three for the weekly wrapups. Gabe's response to Joystiq has been reprinted, with permission, after the break. Let us know how you feel on the subject.

Joystiq readers congratulated Press Start to Play's creators for picking up Twilight Princess by awarding their recount with the dubious nod as webcomic of the week. "[It] wins this one for me," explains commenter CJC, "having done that same thing before." Indeed, many other comments admit to having the same experience when purchasing their copy.Second place goes to VG Cats' G-Four'd and third place Penny Arcade. We love Tycho and Gabe's work, but this comment by reader Tim may make true fans of this wrapup sick, as he notes that he votes for PA weekly without even looking at the other choices, but at least he's honest. Our pick of the week? Digital Unrests' nerdtacular Vectorman strip. Thanks for everyone who (legitimately) voted; be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Shawn Handyside of Staccato Comic contributed a strip for VG Cats and came out as the winner of this week's webcomic wrapup. Personally, we think it was the Zelda II reference that struck a chord in everyone's hearts ... no? Oh well. Second place went to Penny Arcade and third place was a tie between newcomer xkcd and old hat Fanboys Online. Oh man oh man oh man ... it's Saturday! According to the ever-knowing Wikipedia, Saturday is derived from Saturn, the Roman God of time; originally, it was called dies Saturni, meaning "Saturn's day." Looks like gaming icons need therapy. VG Cats sat down with a few popular characters in their recent strip, resulting in the "most popular webcomic of the week" crown. However redundant you might think it is, we wouldn't mind seeing a few more episodes returning to this theme.Second place went to recently-centennialed Fanboys Online, with a strip (no. 104) on PS3 heroics. Third place was grabbed by Ctrl+Alt+Del -- turns out people love joking about the PS3 launch. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related comics you stumble upon this week! (For example, did you see this Foxtrot strip? Yum.)

The above tribute was sent in by Joystiq reader Embrace from this photobucket album and it warmed our hearts. This weekend is -- drum roll, please -- launch weekend! For most retailers, it's the worst time of the year until the next Harry Potter book comes out. For most webcomic artists, its a slew of similarly-themed strips regarding waiting in line and initial hardware-related peculiarities.Due to Chrysis' (of RPG-TV) heartfelt and understandable request, we are going to again put the webcomic post on the front page so that the lesser-known comics can get the much-needed traffic and recognition. 11.14.2006

An interesting thing happened this week when we embedded the webcomic wrapup poll (as opposed to putting it on the front page of the site): The total number of votes was only one-third of its usual self. All those votes usually go to Penny Arcade. Maybe it was due to the blogathon or that we picked a bad PA strip or that we called the wrapup so boring that most people turned away, but this week we had a new winner: Digital Unrest's Nomenclature strip (oh, the Zelda II memories). Second place went to VG Cats, and third was an absolute tie between newcomers 8-bit/ch and Blast Wave. We'll continue this format next week, barring a mass uprising in comments averse to the idea. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Though not by the usual commanding margin, Penny Arcade was the favorite webcomic this week among Joystiq readers. Let's see, a plane crashes in this strip and the following one is all about the TV show LOST ... coincidence? When do we get to see a gaming parody of the Twilight Zone's "Nightmare at 20,000 feet," with a deranged Koopa (or fill in your own character here) ripping apart the wing.To those who voted for Penny Arcade: why not show your love by donating to Child's Play?Second place, and a long overdue win, goes to RPG-TV. The fourth annual Child's Play charity event has now begun. The fundraising, toy donation event was started by Tycho and Gabe, the creators of Penny Arcade, in 2003 and has since raised almost $1.2 million in donations and more than 53,000 toys and games. Last year alone, Child's Play collected $605,000.All donations from the drive go towards sick kids in children's hospitals. Tycho has also expressed interest in expanding their support of H.O.P.E., the Hospital-based Online Pediatric Environment. Now is the time for everyone to give to charity. If you're the kind of person who wants something back, you can purchase a Child's Play t-shirt and all proceeds go towards the charity.See Also:Penny Arcade launches third annual Child's Play charityChilds Play 2 has been officially launched[Update 1: As one commenter pointed out, Tycho and Gabe dissuade people from giving away old toys & games due to health risks. • Joystiq Interview: Concerned's Chris Livingston

    by

    11.02.2006

Yes, Gordon Frohman is dead. Super dead. As the popular gaming comic Concerned said its goodbyes, creator Chris Livingston took some time to trash talk Frohman posthumously and, for reasons unknown to us (or caused by us, actually) talk about underwear. A lot.Let's get through the basic (read: boring) questions first: why'd you start the webcomic? Well, I thought Half-Life 2 was a great game, but there simply weren't enough jokes about toilets in it. So, I thought a comic would be a good place to get some humor into the game. I came up with the idea for Frohman, a complete idiot, to play all the way through the game, just like Freeman only instead of being a hero, he'd be a complete tool. I waited for a while but no one else started the comic, so I went ahead and started it myself. So Frohman is dead and gone, right? I've been asked this a lot in the past couple days. I guess it seems pretty obvious to me that he's dead, what with the title of the comic mentioning that he is going to die during the series, plus the Epilogue indicating that the series is over, plus the fact that he's lying there dead and people in the comic are saying that he is dead. And one of the people is the medic who would know if someone was dead. So, I guess it's left as an exercise to the reader. But, yeah, he's totally dead.

  • Has Concerned's Gordon Frohman lost all his HP?

    11.01.2006

It seems, after one catastrophic incident after another, Concerned's Gordon Frohman has finally died. Following a massive fall from the City 17 citadel with a not-so-ceremonious landing onto Dr. Breen, Frohman mistakenly turns off "Buddha mode," allowing his HP to drop below one.Is Frohman dead? After 204 issues spanning just under 18 months, has Concerned told its last tale? The webcomic's forums are alive with debate on its finality, and a video game protagonist never truly dies (just return to the most recent save). The main website still claims he will update "every Tuesday and Thursday," so maybe Epilogue #2 will show up tomorrow. Thanks to Chris Livingston for a hilarious comic. Be sure to sift through the archives if you have a chance.[Thanks, Epic]
