We aren't sure if people really loved this comic strip, voted because of its clout, or mistakenly voted for this when trying (in vain) to get "none of the above" to work, but Penny Arcade took a commanding lead in this week's webcomic wrapup.Second place went to Ctrl+Alt+Del and third place is a virtual three-way tie, with Digital Unrest holding a meager lead (happy birthday, Chris). Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any gaming webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Despite many objectors in the comments, VG Cats' not-so-subtle vegetable-console analogy took the top spot as the webcomic of the week. Ctrl+Alt+Del's diabolical Sony conspiracy took second place, and Digital Unrest's physics / history lesson takes third. However, our personal favorite, and a favorite of the commenters, was Fanboys' clever "I hacked your board game" strip. Props to you, Scott. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Be it fond memories of Ocarina of Time or a predilection to chicken cruelty, Press Start to Play took the top spot as gaming webcomic of the week. Second place goes to Penny Arcade and Fanboys (in love) round out the top three. And this week, "none of the above" didn't outscore everyone! Huzzah! Thanks to everyone who voted; we'll be sure to mess around with the format next week, just to push more people into clicking for none of the above (we're just that evil). For the recent weekly webcomic wrapup, we tried pairing up the gaming comics by their joke, as we found many trends amongst the contenders. Of course, that nullified the impact of the poll. As the cost (both of time and energy) has exceeded its benefit, we'll probably return to the old format for a few weeks -- but hey, at least we tried. The comedic pair of Penny Arcade and Digital Unrest (with a passing mention of Press Start to Play) were voted the best webcomic pair of the week for taking on Mario Hoops. Second place went to TGS jokes (PA and Fanboys) and third place was claimed by Square Enix satirists (VG Cats and Dueling Analogs). Then again, Questionable Content was really cool. It's a shame we didn't make it an option; they might have earned bragging rights ("Hey, look at us! We were called cool by a lowly game blog! Woot!").Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

  • The prodigal webcomic wrapup returns

After a week-long hiatus because of in honor of the Tokyo Game Show, the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup has returned to entertain you. As a change of format, this week we're going to look at some common trends among the gaming comics over the last two weeks. There have been some notable standouts that we couldn't categorize. Fanboys nailed an Ocarina of Time / Dance Dance Revolution joke and Press Start to Play took a more self-referential route. Not normally game-related, xkcd and Questionable Content showed their nerd side in more subtle ways. For the other comics this week, nearly every joke had a counterpart somewhere on the internet channels, so we're pairing the comics up into teams of two. Tell us, what webcomic duo nailed their respective punch line? Both Extra Life and Digital Unrest decided to give Wii remotes to animals, hoping for hilarity to ensue. More topical, the ever-elusive Wii pre-order plan has left Digital Unrest bewildered and Dueling Analogs jaded. If Mario Hoops has taught us anything, it's that Ninjas are natural born ballers. Penny Arcade vents its frustration, while Digital Unrest makes one final cameo; why do people think Toad makes a great announcer? The Tokyo Game Show made few splashes in the world of gaming comics. Penny Arcade explains their reasoning, while Fanboys illustrates the problem with Ken Kutaragi's keynote. Don't ask us why, but Dead Rising is the running gag that never dies (no pun intended). Fanboys domesticate the horror, while VG Cats splices it with Pokemon Snap. VG Cats and RPG-TV's Chris Thomas (via a Dueling Analogs guest strip) take jabs at Square Enix's world -- and why not? They're old enough to take a joke. Newsflash: people don't like the new look of Bomberman. Dueling Analogs and RPG-TV report. Here's a look at the post-TGS reaction to the PlayStation 3 -- both the good (via Penny Arcade) and the bad (via Dueling Analogs).

It doesn't take amazing artistic prowess to make a good webcomic; all you need is an appealing and / or clever idea. Cyanide and Happiness, who we mistakenly called Superjerk Returns (sorry, guys), have taken first place as the most popular webcomic this week. Second place goes to Game Boyz, followed by Dueling Analogs in third. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any webcomics you stumble upon this week.

Props to last week's winners Kilobyte and Cubetoons. We've received so many reader submissions that ... well ... I'm afraid we're going to have to close the games, lock the doors, and let the Joystiq readers decide what goes on the recap. It appears that a hack miracle might have taken place in this week's webcomic wrapup: within the span of one night, Kilobyte went from earning nine votes to having over 500 to its name. Honestly, we're not sure to what extent the vote was hacked, and the comic's own artist seems dismayed. However, we must move on and assume that an act of God caused this. This week we're going to crown two winners: Kilobyte and its very close (within five votes) runner-up Cube Toons. Second and third place go to Penny Arcade and Genrevous Point, respectively. Thanks to everyone who (legitimately) voted, and be sure to let us know of any gaming comics you stumble upon this week!

Will Wright, Inc. have a giant man-crush on VG Cats. It all started after the webcomic made a strip about the worst-case scenarios of Spore's creature-making system, entitled "Wright to Life." The folks at Maxis caught wind of the comic and revised the comic, replacing every hand-drawn creature with accurate depictions made in-game.If that was not awesome enough, Maxis this week sent VG Cats author Scott Ramsoomair Spore figurines identical to his creations. You can view pictures (compliments of Scott's mom) here. How's that for customer service?See Also:Our one of a kind Spore figurineValve lets fan tour studio, play Portal[Thanks, Sam and Kyle!]

The winner of this week's webcomic wrapup, perennial favorite none of the above, did not show up to accept his award tonight (damn abstract entities ...), so instead we were forced to give it to the runner-up, VG Cats. Second place now goes to Gamer PALs and third was stolen by Mac Hall. The ever-present dilemma rears its ugly head once more: how do we balance popular gaming webcomics with less known, underrated entries? It's no secret that many people will vote based on brand name alone (e.g. Penny Arcade, Ctrl+Alt+Del, VG Cats, etc.) and not on the individual comic. We'd love to hear your ideas and opinions on the matter. As always, thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

No Penny Arcade, VG Cats or their ilk; instead, we gave smaller gaming comics the limelight, and newcomer Gamer PALs was crowned fan-favorite by a wide margin.Second place went to Shortpacked, followed by Fanboys' tribute to Michael Jackson's "Thriller."
