  • Daily iPhone App: Super Monsters Ate My Condo makes a great game even better

Monsters Ate My Condo, developed by PikPok and published by Adult Swim, has been one of my favorite games this year so far. It's a frenetic puzzle game that has you tossing apartment blocks into the various hungry mouths of gigantic monsters, trying to stack up the right colors and earn points all over a very weird, but wild, aesthetic. And yesterday, Adult Swim surprised us with a re-release of the game, this time called Super Monsters Ate My Condo. The Super version leaves the basic core gameplay intact, but while the original version has an "endless mode" included, this one sticks with only the timed mode, and instead builds a more addictive progression backend on to the game. Now, you earn coins by playing and scoring, and those coins can go back into "boosts," which help your multiplier and your bonuses, or hats for the monsters, which help you with each different bonus as well. Obviously, these coins can also be purchased with real money, which might make you guess that this is just a freemium money grab. And while that could be true, it actually works without extra in-app purchases: The progression system (along with a Jetpack Joyride-style goals system and a wheel of prizes at the end of each round) actually make the game a little more grounded and interesting to play. You'll want to keep the first copy of the game on your phone for that endless mode, but Super Monsters Ate My Condo does add a whole new dimension of addictiveness to what was already a great game. It's available on the App Store now for just $0.99.

Players run through a crumbling castle full of vengeful, zombie enemies, chopping them down as the heroine Crimson Ninja. • Daily iPhone App: Velocirapture has you saving and smiting dinos

    Velocirapture is a weird one. You play as God, either smiting or saving a series of faithful or evil dinosaurs. Yup, it's weird. It's brought to you by the same developers who made the really terrific (and similarly strange) Monsters Ate My Condo, so if you liked that kind of swipey puzzle/action, you'll probably like this one, too. I didn't think it was quite as simple or as polished as that game, however, but maybe you'll disagree. As the dinosaurs wander around, your job is to swipe the righteous ones Heaven and to swipe down the bad ones, smiting them into nonexistence. The action gets fast and crazy quickly, and unlike Monsters Ate My Condo, there's a bit of a metagame, as you can level up your skills and combos as you go, adding a little more depth into how you can play it. Quite a few of the iTunes comments on the game talk about crashes, but if you're running the latest iOS, I don't believe you'll have a problem. Velocirapture is available as a universal app for US$1.99. #next_pages_container { width: 5px; hight: 5px; position: absolute; top: -100px; left: -100px; z-index: 2147483647 !important; }

When Valve and Adult Swim announced a partnership involving the Team Fortress 2 universe, we winked at each other, throwing out the tired joke that it would probably just be a bunch of hats. Today, we're not sure if we should be laughing or weeping silently into our keyboards: Adult Swim has revealed a free, limited-edition Robot Chicken hat for any class in TF2, as the first iteration in a series of new stuff coming from Valve and Adult Swim.To get the Robot Chicken hat, just sign up for the Adult Swim newsletter by July 4.In related, not-completely-predictable news, the FAQ for redeeming the Robot Chicken hat asks and answers an intriguing question: Q. Are you making a Team Fortress cartoon? A. Go ask your mother. As long as it's not called "The Hatsure Brothers" or any variation thereof, an Adult Swim Team Fortress 2 cartoon sounds like something we could get behind. In still-related, by-now-old news, Valve launched the "Meet the Pyro" video and announced the Source Filmmaker movie-creating tool today.

Valve and Adult Swim have come together in a glorious union of witticism, snark and something else that they're not telling us until next week. Adult Swim has a promo page decked out in Team Fortress 2 images and hashtags, and it promises this partnership will beget "something that you'll probably enjoy."The surprise is "coming next week," with more information to be disseminated in the newsletter, apparently. Clicking "Sign Up" leads to a registration page with this image of TF2's Pyro, who is due for a "Meet the" feature from Valve any time now.Valve is running a summer ARG at the moment that may be connected to this Adult Swim deal, or it might just be another thing that Valve may never finish.

  • 2AM Truck Stop, a new Adult Swim game (not a simulation)

Adult Swim's latest risque game for its online portal is 2 AM Truck Stop. Now, if you've ever had the displeasure of seeing the debauchery performed at a multi axle rest stop at 2AM, rest assured that this game is not a simulation of that.In fact, 2AM Truck Stop is a neon-infused shoot 'em up, featuring adult themes like methamph... er, "crystal" power-ups, in which you survive an onslaught of trucker paraphernalia. It's not so much an at-work time waster as an "OMG, it's 3AM, why can't I sleep... it was probably that [censored] I took." You know who you are.

Robot Unicorn Attack evolved from browser game to mobile title and will now live in harmony, harmony on Facebook as Robot Unicorn Attack Evolution. The pseudo-sequel for the social network adds new control elements, new animals (PANDAS!), daily challenges, and a bevy of microtransaction options.Players can purchase Fairy Dust, which will allow them to add "enhancements" for extra abilities and bonuses before a session. Enhancements include triple jumps, slowing the game down, blasting through a star without dash, and "Freevolution," which allows players to start the game as the panda. And, really, what game wouldn't we pay to start off as a panda in?%Gallery-146731%

Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we'll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Monsters Ate My Condo!. I've always had a bad feeling about condos. I always thought of them as either the home of some lecherous old dude trying to do gross things or the set of some sitcom starring a bunch of lecherous old dudes. Now I know why I shied away from that style of dwelling: because monsters love to eat condos. %Gallery-134311%

The latest brainchild of Adult Swim Games is a pretty-far-out-there title. In Monsters Ate My Condo, you feed condos in an apartment high-rise to gigantic, hungry monsters. It's as weird as it sounds, and we're just in love with the names of the four titular monsters: Boat Head, Reginald Starfire, Mr. Shigoto and Lord Ferocious. The game is a universal iOS app, developed by PikPok for Adult Swim, and is currently available on the App store for $0.99 -- though it's only recommended for iPhone 3GS and up. Adult Swim has also partnered with Grumpyface Studios for another iOS game called Bring Me Sandwiches!!, which should be available for download later this month. %Gallery-134311%

  • Adult Swim shows the sappy side of gaming in SUPER iam8bit article

For an after-hours comedy network, Adult Swim takes its video games very seriously; its article on the SUPER iam8bit gallery presents the show as if the most imaginative pages from our childhood diaries were brought to life and thrown onto the streets of Los Angeles. The article delves into the inspirations behind a few iam8bit artists, who seem to agree that the pixelated, lo-fi graphics of classic video games make them catalysts for creativity and imagination, even today. Adult Swim talks with gallery creator Jon Gibson, artists Dave Crosland, Scott Belcastro, Jose Emroca Flores, Stone, Kelice Penney, Sky Burchard and Double Fine's Drew Skillman, who modded a Kinect to make live, ever-changing video-game art. If you're a fan of old school video games, art or men with impressive beards, read the full article at the source link.

Adult Swim continues to be a venue for brilliantly weird browser games from indie talent, following up games like Robot Unicorn Attack and Cream Wolf with Soul Brother, by Superflat Games (developer of the Silent Hill 2 demake Soundless Mountain II). The beautifully pixel-illustrated Soul Brother gives you control of a variety of creatures with different abilities, all controlled by killing your current host body and then inhabiting the new one as a ghost. Each body has a skill that can be used to pass certain obstacles in the Metroidvania-esque game, like flight or double-jumping. While you're at Adult Swim, we also encourage you to check out Lesbian Spider-Queens of Mars by Auntie Pixelante, probably our favorite maze game about slavery.

  • Adult Swim looks to release one mobile game a month

    04.18.2011

Jeff Olsen of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim division did a quick interview with our fellow bloggers at Joystiq, and he says that in addition to the Android launches the company is doing this week, they are expecting to "get to the point where we can release a new mobile game a month." That would create quite a library of Adult Swim titles. The company has already seen a fair amount of success with its current setup of iOS titles, including the very popular Robot Unicorn Attack. Olsen says the idea is to keep working on Flash games that are promoted through the TV channel, and then take the best of those to iOS to profit. There's no word on how much money these games are making for the channel (it must still pale in comparison to their actual advertising dollars), but if nothing else, they're likely offering some good brand awareness for their cable programming.

  • Adult Swim Games planning slate of original mobile titles

    by
    Alexander Sliwinski
    Alexander Sliwinski
    04.18.2011

Adult Swim's initial foray into gaming was not very promising. A 2005 partnership with now defunct Midway produced a by-all-accounts terrible Aqua Teen Hunger Force game in 2007. The following year's Harvey Birdman collaboration with Capcom was only marginally better. Jeff Olsen, VP of Adult Swim Digital and Games, told Joystiq that the brand's audience is pretty savvy and "license games don't have a great track record." So the company tried something different: publishing original, Flash-based games on its website. From there, the popular originals, like Amateur Surgeon and Five Minutes to Kill (Yourself), were ported to social and iOS platforms with great success. Tomorrow the company will launch its first Android port, Robot Unicorn Attack, which has racked up more than 150 million combined plays online and on Facebook. "The audience for a casual game based on completely original IP, in my experience, is almost unlimited," Olsen said. "If you're basing it on a show, you're probably shutting more people out than letting them in." Olsen told us that the "next evolution" for Adult Swim Games is to create truly original titles for iPhone and other mobile platforms; ones that aren't ports of Flash games from its website. He believes that the first of these should launch in the third quarter. Going forward, Olsen said, "We're trying to get to the point where we can release a new mobile game a month."

  • Robot Unicorn Attack on Android tomorrow, Adult Swim app in May

    04.18.2011

Adult Swim plans to release its first magical Android app, Robot Unicorn Attack, tomorrow for $1 on the mobile platform with cross-platform Open Feint support. Jeff Olsen, VP of Adult Swim Digital and Games, told Joystiq that the "Heavy Metal" and "Christmas Edition" versions of Robot Unicorn (currently available for iPhone) may come to Android depending on how the original performs on the Android Market. The company also expects to launch its free Adult Swim app for Android in May. The app allows users to access full episodes and clips from the Cartoon Network programming block's popular shows, including Robot Chicken, The Venture Bros and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The app has surpassed a million downloads on the Apple App Store since its release in mid-February. "We've gotten a lot of requests for our games on Android," Olsen told us, saying that Adult Swim's other top-performing iOS games, Amateur Surgeon and Five Minutes to Kill (Yourself), would likely be next for development. "We're starting with Robot Unicorn because we've seen the most call for it. If it performs well, we'll look at our whole catalog and bring over our other top titles." "We haven't green-lit any projects for the console space," Olsen added, "but we are interested in the downloadable market; experimenting on multiple platforms on a variety of new platforms with Android being just the first." The free, Flash version of Robot Unicorn Attack is available to play on AdultSwim.com.

  • Adult Swim releases free universal app with full episodes in the app

    02.22.2011

Cartoon Network's Adult Swim programming division has been surprisingly Mac-friendly -- not only has it produced a number of great iOS games already, but its shows have included a number of Mac references as well (always in the service of comedy, of course). I guess it's no surprise that Adult Swim released a universal app of its own. Like many television apps, there are some extras, including a schedule of shows, and clock, weather and calendar features. But the real draw here is that you can watch full episodes of Adult Swim shows in the app, from Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job to Family Guy (reruns), Aqua Teen Hunger Force and, one of my favorites, The Venture Brothers. And the best part is that the app is completely and totally free. If you're an Adult Swim fan at all, you'll definitely want to go get it off of the App Store right now. Great to see such a solid strategy from these guys on iOS -- I guess they definitely know where their audience is.

It's no secret that Steve Jobs isn't a fan of the physical CD, preferring, of course, that his customers buy their music in his iTunes store. But what length is he willing to go to get rid of the CD for good? On the latest episode of Seth Green's grossly satirical stop-motion show Robot Chicken we found out, as a Steve Jobs parody became a target for both Compact Disc Man and Zune Man. The "superheroes" tried to do Jobs in, but he succeeded in killing the CD off in a hail of gunfire. Zune Man, however, was allowed to live, with Jobs stating that he "wouldn't waste the bullets." Touche. Click Read More below to check out the clip for yourself.

  • Real Racing 2, Grand Theft Auto, others on sale this weekend

A whole slew of apps are going on sale this weekend, including Firemint's Real Racing 2 (which has dropped down to half price at US$4.99) and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (also $4.99, down by the same discount). Adult Swim's hilarious little Robot Unicorn Attack running game is only 99 cents, on sale for both iPad and iPhone. In fact, all of the Adult Swim titles are on sale for just 99 cents, so you can look through those to see what you like. I'm not sure what the impetus is behind this sale, but it's best not to ask questions. If you need a few new games to play this weekend (and honestly, I'm not sure you do, given all of the great titles on the App Store lately -- I'm still loving Battleheart), there you go.
