TI showcases 3D projector and DLP Pico chipset at InfoComm


InfoComm is in full swing down in Vegas, and Texas Instruments isn't wasting any time showcasing its latest gear. First up is a prototype 1080p beamer hailed as the industry's first with a lamp-free design. Said unit also utilizes a PhlatLight LED light source and a BrilliantColor chipset, and if TI is to be believed, certain vendors will be shipping wares based on this stuff later this year. Moving on, we're being (re)treated to the planet's "first" 3D front projector (also known as the F10 AS3D), designed in cooperation with projectiondesign. Hidden beneath the big boys is the DLP Pico chipset for mobile applications, which will unsurprisingly pop up in pico projectors from companies like Optoma in late 2008 (Europe and Asia) / 2009 (the rest of us). Acer promotes Gianfranco Lanci to CEO, J.T. Wang becomes Acer Group CEO

It's not like Acer's Gianfranco Lanci (shown right) was hurtin' for cash -- after all, the guy was (and still is) president of the company -- but there's just nothing quite like slapping "and CEO" on the end of said title. Approved by the outfit's Board of Directors today, Mr. Lanci has been promoted to Chairman, while the previous CEO, J.T. Wang, will serve as Acer Group CEO. From what we can tell, there's no hard feelings about any of the moves, and c'mon, it is nice to move from one corner office to another every now and then, you know?

Foxconn showcases tiny PD-W1001 DLP projector


Although Computex has largely delivered a slew of netbooks to digest, a handful of new pico projectors have also managed to get a little face time. The latest is Foxconn's PD-W1001, which features a 0.3-inch Texas Instruments DLP chip, WVGA (854 x 480) resolution and 25 Lm -- all within a 55- x 46- x 26-millimeter package that weighs just 65-grams. In its current form, we can't see this being much more than a novel concept, but when these critters start inching closer to 1080p, you can color us very much interested.

Sharp launches XG-P560W .65-inch 3-chip DLP professional projector

We should probably preface this by reiterating that when Sharp says "professional," it means precisely that. The firm's latest beamer -- the June-bound XG-P560W (or XG-P560WN sans lens) -- features a modest WXGA (1,280 x 800) resolution, but includes Texas Instruments' .65-inch 3-chip DLP technology along with Sharp's own CV-IC II System for smoothing jaggies and minimizing image noise. Additionally, it features a 1,800:1 contrast ratio, seven interchangeable lenses, a dual-lamp lighting system, DVI / HDMI inputs and a built-in Ethernet port for remote access and control. Remember that whole spill we made at the onset? Yeah, here's proof: $16,995 for the XG-P560W, $15,995 for the XG-P560WN.

ProjectionDesign's WUXGA F30 DLP projector now shipping -- a world's first


Oh she's a chubster all right. But that's ProjectionDesign's F30, the world's first DLP projector capable of throwing a business-minded, WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) display. Perfect for native WUXGA laptop-based demonstrations, ProjectionDesign's flagship projector also sources 1080p content in addition to 4:3 formats as you'd expect. Inside this 4,300 lumen projector you'll find TI's DLP .95 chip and 2x 300W UHP lamps offering about 2,000 hours of life at full power (5,000 hours in eco mode). Inputs include DVI, HDMI 1.3a, VGA, and component to name a few. Price? You've gotta ask ProjectionDesign. In other words, too rich for you Mr. Middle Manager.

Young Optics set to dish out pico-projector by mid-2008

Texas Instruments has been showing off its pico-projector technology for some time now, but it looks like it's finally making its way into a finished product, with Young Optics announcing that it expects to ship the first such projectors "by the end of second quarter or the beginning of the third quarter." In addition to the core TI technology, the projector makes use of a DLP chip and an LED light module, which pumps out a whopping 7 lumens of brightness while consuming just one watt of energy. No word as to what they'll cost or exactly where they'll show up, but cellphones seem to be the likely prime candidate, given Texas Instrument's past demonstrations of the technology.

Texas Instruments almost set to ship Android dev platform


Aside from the Android test platform we saw earlier this week, Texas Instruments has its Android development platform up and running and expects to be in a position to start shipping to developers -- yeah you, the programmers that will make our dreams come true -- in the next two months. Google attacks: Android at Mobile World Congress


Seeing as Mobile World Congress is all about the cellular experience, we weren't too surprised to bump into some Android goodness while here. Texas Instruments had the handset you see above -- from an unknown vendor -- to demo the OS running on an OMAP 3430 at 500 MHz. The interface is dead quick and rather glorious, and while we had no internet connectivity on it, we still were able to have a peek at various applications -- check the gallery for more photos. NEC / Wind River were also showing off an Android prototype platform running on a Medity2 testbed -- also at 500 MHz -- though it's a pretty early implementation and was pretty wonky. Interestingly, neither of them had functional input in the browser, so while the NEC version was online, we couldn't point it anywhere useful. Radio types in the devices were GSM but we expect they'll likely have HSDPA once they finally land in our hands. In a few words, we like what we see.

MIT and Texas Instruments team up to develop power-sipping microchip

Yeah, we've heard companies toot their own horns after creating some newfangled chip that sucks down less power than versions prior, but MIT and Texas Instruments are just now getting around to taking their turn. Set to wow onlookers at tomorrow's International Solid- State Circuits Conference, a new microchip will be unveiled that operates at just 0.3-volts -- quite a bit less than most others, which function at around 1-volt. Currently, the device is simply a proof of concept, but those responsible for this bugger are already hoping for it to be used in "longer-lasting, self-charging cellphones, medical devices, self-contained sensor networks, etc." in five or so years. We're watching the clock, you two.

Texas Instruments shows off DLP DualView technology

You've already had a chance to see the DLP DualView technology in action, but just in case you needed an official word that it was here to stay (for now, at least), Texas Instruments has doled out just that. Essentially, the system enables two viewers to see two completely different images on the same screen so long as they're both rockin' a set of specialized glasses. Reportedly, TI hopes to make multiplayer gaming a whole lot more fun (and fair, we suppose), but you will need "a compatible source," a 3D-ready DLP TV and a pair of DualView glasses to get things up and running. 'Course, we've no idea how soon this stuff will hit the mainstream, but hey, there's nothing like fraggin' it up with a set of specs that just reek of 1980, right?

ARM, six others join forces on Linux Mobile Computing platform

Just after Symbian announced that its future operating systems would support ARM SMP multicore technology, ARM has teamed up with six others to collaborate on a Linux Mobile Computing platform. More specifically, the firm has joined with Marvell, MontaVista, Movial, Mozilla, Samsung and Texas Instruments in order to develop a "Linux-based open source platform for next-generation mobile applications." Reportedly, the platform will eventually be released into the open source community, and it hopes to move swiftly in getting the goods into "Connected Mobile Computing (CMC) devices." And if you're wondering when you can get your hands dirty with it, ARM is hoping to release a full platform early next year and have equipped devices on shelves by early 2009.

Hands-on with Texas Instruments' cellphone projector


Now that we have email, internet, TV, GPS, cameras, and satellite radio on our cellphones, our next wish is for bigger, higher resolution screens -- which seems paradoxical, because larger displays almost always mean bulkier devices. Well Texas Instruments thinks it'll soon be able to nullify this trade-off with an in-handset projector that we've heard about several times before, but last night's Pepcom event in New York was the first time we've been able to peep the technology up close. Not that the TI reps made it easy to do so: the prototype unit was in a locked metal case underneath the table, and we had to swear up and down that we saw Walt Mossberg getting a demo before they'd cough it up. As you can see, the reason they want to keep this under wraps for the time being is that the quality and brightness are certainly not ready for prime time yet; while the unit we saw used lasers as the light source, we're told that an LED-based model still in the lab offers significant improvements. InFocus launches Play Big IN82 1080p DLP projector

We've always heard that too much work and not enough play drives the brain insane, so it's about time InFocus saved us all from falling off the deep end. Amidst the recent barrage of Work Big projectors, InFocus has finally unveiled a Play Big iteration that becomes the company's first foray into the single-chip DLP, 1080p-capable PJ realm. The Play Big IN82 is armed with the latest DLP DarkChip3 technology from TI, and also features a native 4,000:1 contrast ratio, 1,500 ANSI lumens, a Color Gamut Calibrator, ISF Day / Night presets, Pixelworks DNX 10-bit video processing engine, and HDMI 1.3 to boot. Get ready for an extended vacation when this one lands next month for $5,499.

InFocus Work Big IN10 DLP micro projector


Continuing to expand the Work Big lineup, InFocus' latest addition could be easily overlooked. Those with little room to spare in the suit will appreciate the 2.4-pound "palm-sized" design, and the DLP technology, 1,800 ANSI lumens, and XGA native resolution ought to do those PowerPoints proud. The Work Big IN10 works natively at 4:3, sports an 1,100:1 contrast ratio and onboard 1.3:1 zoom lens, is compatible with NTSC and PAL signals, and touts a lamp life of nearly 4,000 hours. Additionally, the integrated one-watt speaker and DVI / S-Video / composite input assortment should handle the most basic of setups, but this bundle of corporate joy will run you a stiff $1,249 when it lands in August.

projectiondesign's Action! M25 DLP projector does 1080p


Sure, Epson and Philips' endeavor to create a mini projector may be novel, but projectiondesign's forthcoming device packs the power we AV freaks admire. Touting an almost unbelievable assortment of niceties, this 3.7- x 9.2- x 10.8-inch DLP machine is reportedly the "world's smallest" Full HD projector to date, and if that wasn't inspiring enough, it also uses TI's 0.95-inch 1080p DMD, the firm's proprietary RealColor technology, and plays nice with home automation systems with RS-232 and IP interfaces. Additionally, it sports a 10-bit video processing engine, HDMI 1.3 compatibility, 1,000 lumens, and a even-segment, 5x color wheel. Best of all, this HD-lovin' projector is available for purchase as we speak, but we're assuming that the unlisted price is a good sign that we common folk should just keep on looking.
