Valorant's Act II update adds a new battle pass and deathmatches
Riot Games has revealed what Valorant players can expect in Act II — the free-to-player shooter’s take on seasons — when it drops tomorrow (August 4th). The biggest addition is a new battle pass that gives owners a bunch of new cosmetics to unlock, including weapon skins and keychain-style ‘gun buddies,’ sprays, player titles and ‘player card’ artwork, and Radianite Points, a currency that can be spent on individual weapons to access even flashier skins and visual effects. Just like the previous battle pass, which launched on June 2nd with the game’s general release, it will cost 1,000 Valorant Points, a premium currency that can be bought for $9.99.
Valorant's twelfth agent is Killjoy, a German robotics genius
Killjoy’s addition to Valorant could be divisive.
'Metal: Hellsinger' is a rhythm FPS game due in 2021
'Metal: Hellsinger' is yet another FPS set in hell, but it's a rhythm game, so you'll need to shoot your way out in sync with the game's soundtrack.
Overwatch's new hero Echo arrives April 14th
Blizzard first teased Echo in 2018. So Overwatch fans have been waiting a while for this moment to come.
'Call of Duty: Warzone' is introducing four-player squads
Just as Apex Legends is getting a permanent duos mode to complement the long-standing trios option, Call of Duty: Warzone is stepping in the opposite direction by letting you drop into the map with four players in your squad. The quads option will be available in the battle royale and plunder modes April 8th, when season 3 gets underway in both that game and CoD: Modern Warfare multiplayer. As you'd probably expect, Warzone will add more weapons and skins when season 3 starts, including silenced and non-silenced versions of every weapon type.
The latest 'Overwatch' hero can transform into enemy characters
Echo, the latest Overwatch hero, is joining the ranks of the game's damage dealers with some nifty-sounding abilities. The AI robot's ultimate in particular will give players plenty of new scope for creativity -- when they activate Duplicate, Echo can adopt the form of an opponent's hero and use (or echo, geddit?) their abilities.
Respawn's 'Apex Legends' battle royale is available now
As was widely expected, EA-owned Titanfall developer Respawn has launched its free-to-play battle royale game, Apex Legends. The fundamentals are pretty familiar: drop into an enclosed map with teammates, gear up with the best loot you can find and take out all the other teams, all while the play area keeps shrinking. What sets the latest entrant into the genre apart from formidable rivals such as Fortnite, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout mode is its use of character-specific special abilities.
'Project Cars' developer is making 'most powerful console ever'
The studio behind hyper-realistic racing game Project Cars is moving into the console business – and it's making some bold claims. Ian Bell, CEO of Slightly Mad Studios, revealed on Twitter that the company has started work on "The Mad Box", which promises to be the "most powerful console ever built."
EA delays 'Battlefield V' to November 20th
DICE knows a thing or two about the perils of shipping a game before it's ready. That's why it and Electronic Arts are pushing the release date for Battlefield V back by almost a month. The World War II shooter will now be released on November 20th instead of October 19th. That puts it out of spitting distance of Red Dead Redemption 2 (out October 26th), the game seemingly every other publisher is trying to avoid on calendar.
The next TBS esports series looks inside a major ‘CS:GO’ tournament
TBS has become an unexpected home for esports content over the last two years, though it's mostly covered Eleague, the pro gaming circuit the cable network's parent company Turner helped create. Its next show dives into the recent CS:GO pro tournament, Eleague Premier 2018, which wrapped at the end of July. While we know the results, we don't know the stories: The seven-part series follows players from eight of the top-ranked professional teams that competed, and its first hour-long episode debuts August 31st at 11PM ET/PT on TBS.
'Project 1v1' is a F2P arena shooter from the 'Borderlands' team
Gearbox Software brought a new game to E3 this year, but it definitely wasn't Borderlands 3 or a new Brothers in Arms. Instead, it's Project 1v1, which, as its working title suggests, is an online first-person shooter that pits you against one other player in combat. Each round lasts just five minutes, and arenas are deliberately small. Through a handful of matches, the map size meant that I was constantly playing cat and mouse with my opponent. But, since I'm not very good with a mouse and keyboard, more often than not I was the one being hunted.
Of course ‘Battlefield V’ is getting a battle royale mode
EA started off its EA Play show at E3 answering a question on everyone's lips: Will Battlefield V follow the shooter vogue and have its own battle royale mode? Yes, yes it will. While the game's leads introducing the feature offered no details, the franchise's Twitter account tweeted that it will have team play and vehicles. Time will tell if the game puts its own spin on the mode or is just trying to cash in on the zeitgeist, but at least it won't have loot boxes.
Avalanche Studios unveils nostalgic '80s robot shooter 'Generation Zero'
If you've caught the '80s nostalgia bug after Stranger Things, this could be the game for you. It's 1989. Machines have taken over rural Sweden, and it's unclear how or why. And it's up to a group of young adults to stop them. That's the gist of Generation Zero, an open-world shooter announced by Just Cause and Mad Max developer Avalanche Studios just a few days before E3 kicks off.
'Overload' revives the cramped combat of classic shooter 'Descent'
Back in 1995, Toy Story wowed audiences with sophisticated computer-generated animation. That same year, games studio Parallax released Descent, blowing players away with some of the first truly 3D, omnidirectional gameplay. Things have moved on a lot since then, but the classic game's creators, Parallax co-founders Matt Toschlog and Mike Kulas, are ready to stage a revival. Today, they've released Overload, a spiritual successor that brings back the zero-G combat that redefined first-person shooters (FPS) two decades ago.
A proper 'Serious Sam' sequel is in the works
There's a new Serious Sam game on the horizon. A fresh instalment of the bombastic shooter franchise was teased in 2014 but never came to fruition. Instead, developer Croteam released The Talos Principle, a critically acclaimed puzzler about androids and AI. Now, though, we have a teaser trailer for Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, which shows the titular hero driving through the (French? Italian?) countryside on a classic motorcycle. Of course, he's soon attacked by a "headless kamikaze," which Sam dispatches with a casual shotgun blast. The camera then pans back to reveal a horde of gruesome enemies and the message: See you at E3 2018.
Try the new ‘Overwatch' hero during the game's free weekend
At Blizzcon earlier this month, the studio behind Overwatch announced a new playable character for the hero shooter: Moira, a healer with evasive and damage-dealing abilities. Last night, she became available to play on PC and consoles -- and wouldn't you know it, Blizzard is making the game free to try out this weekend, starting today.
First full ‘Wolfenstein II’ DLC arrives on December 14th
Fans of MachineGames' wonderful Nazi-killing shooter Wolfenstein: The New Colossus were probably wondering what the title screen's countdown would reveal. Last week, we found out: A delightful trio of hour-long mini-missions featuring characters from the game's upcoming DLC. Today, the studio released a roadmap revealing the release dates for the game's new content, and the first will launch on December 14th.
'Wolfenstein II' is definitely not 'Doom'
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is experiencing a serious case of opportune timing. It's a game all about shooting Nazis, but that's not new for the franchise -- what's new, this time around, is the social climate in the US. Nazis are in the news and marching with tiki torches on the streets. Members of the Ku Klux Klan are donning their cloaks in broad daylight. The president has invited white nationalists into the White House. Wolfenstein II's goose-stepping villains and its themes of a complacent, Nazi-ruled America are shockingly relevant in 2017. But how does the game actually play? Wolfenstein is, at its heart, an action-heavy first-person shooter packed with all manner of ridiculous weapons and abilities. Shooting is its main focus -- and, in the following discussion, it's also ours.
‘Lawbreakers’ adds new content despite few players
Despite a player count that's bottomed out at ten people in the last week, Lawbreakers is forging ahead with a content release that includes two new maps and the launch of competitive mode, Boss League. The number of players has been reliably under a hundred every night, but studio Boss Key Productions is keeping its promise to continue on its roadmap of DLC.
'Doom' arrives on Nintendo Switch November 10th
Turns out that you won't have to wait too long to raze some Hell on your Nintendo Switch. That's because Doom will be released this November 10th, only a few short weeks from now. How's it look? Based on the video below, good and it seems to play just as fast, but it's a little soft/hazy compared to the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. That's to be expected though, because the Switch is running on a standard NVIDIA Tegra X1 chip versus the PS4's and Xbox One's AMD Radeon processors. What's impressive is that the game's fancy lighting tricks appear to be intact. However, the video doesn't indicate if the game footage was captured during handheld mode or in TV mode.
