As guests wait for their order, they can watch a movie or TV program, while at the same time viewing the chef preparing their food on the other side of the display. This innovative product naturally stands out more in the contactless era as it can not only act as a partition but also serve up some fun.

Dumb phones are getting smarter. Last year Nokia showed us what was possible in a feature phone with its 8110 4G, now Alcatel is leveraging the same operating system, Kai, to launch a 4G flip phone with Google Assistant integration, as well as apps such as WhatsApp and YouTube.

NYC sues T-Mobile over 'pervasive' illegal sales tactics

New York City is suing T-Mobile for allegedly violating consumer protection laws within the city. The lawsuit stems primarily from Metro by T-Mobile, a low-cost, prepaid wireless program operated by the major mobile carrier. According to the city, T-Mobile allegedly overcharged its customers, sometimes signing them up for expensive financing plans without getting their consent, and sold used phones as if they were brand new.

DOJ could approve T-Mobile and Sprint merger tomorrow

T-Mobile and Sprint are still grappling with state lawsuits attempting to block their merger, but they can at least take some consolation from the federal government. CNBC sources claim that the Department of Justice is expected to approve the merger on July 25th (that's tomorrow, if you're reading in time). The union is contingent on T-Mobile selling assets to Dish, though. Reportedly, Dish will buy T-Mobile's prepaid phone business for $1.4 billion, and spend another to snap up $3.6 billion in wireless spectrum. You can likely say goodbye to a T-Mobile-owned Metro, then.

Palm is selling an unlocked version of its tiny smartphone

As much as Palm's tiny phone has improved over the past several months, there's still been one glaring limitation: you've had to use it on Verizon (Engadget's parent company) in the US. You won't have to be quite so picky after today. Palm has opened pre-orders for an unlocked version of the minuscule Android device that will work as a stand-alone phone on most major US carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and the prepaid Metro brand. No, there's no mention of Sprint -- ironically, the home of the original Palm Pre won't get this device a decade later.

In an effort to entice residents to ride public transportation again, LA has launched a pilot program designed to shuttle residents to and from three of the busiest Metro stations in the city. LA's local government first announced its team-up with ride-sharing platform Via back in 2017. Now, the pilot is live and has started offering shared, on-demand rides to serve the Artesia, El Monte and North Hollywood stations.

T-Mobile didn't launch a TV service in 2018, but it will have a little something up its sleeve in the near future. In the wake of a rumor from Cheddar, video provider Xumo has confirmed that it's partnering with the carrier's prepaid Metro brand on a "snackable content app" that would launch on two smartphones in February. The original rumor had named Xumo, but claimed that the product was closer to a TV service and that it would be pre-installed on multiple Samsung phones.

T-Mobile's prepaid service will offer 5G in 2019

You won't have to spring for a 'premium' carrier to use some of the earliest mobile 5G service. T-Mobile has formally relaunched its prepaid Metro service, and with it comes word that the sub-brand will launch 5G service sometime in 2019. It's not certain how that will affect plans, if at all. However, it could be your ticket to next-gen wireless at a relatively low price -- and frankly, rather handy for included services like Google One and Amazon Prime.

T-Mobile hasn't showered much of its attention on its prepaid MetroPCS brand, but it's rectifying that omission today. It's relaunching the budget carrier as Metro, and introducing unlimited plans that not only edge closer to T-Mobile's regular service, but break some new ground. Both the $50 and $60 plans ($140 and $150 respectively for four lines) are the first to include a Google One subscription -- you and your family won't have to pay extra for gobs of cloud storage. Spring for the $60 plan and you also get an Amazon Prime membership with all the media and shipping perks that entails.

'Metro: Exodus' treads a fine line between strategy and busy work

This year's E3 has already given us a glimpse of a wide spectrum of games, from upcoming installments in classic multiplayer franchises to new and interesting, story-driven titles. Metro: Exodus, the third game in the post-apocalyptic Metro saga, falls very much into the latter camp. Studio 4A Games announced the title at E3 2017, but all we've really heard since is that the release window has been pushed from later this year to early next. With development nearing completion, though, 4A Games is today spilling the beans on what we can expect from Metro: Exodus, both in terms of storyline and the nitty gritty of gameplay mechanics.

Survival shooter 'Metro Exodus' delayed to early 2019

If you were hoping to play Metro Exodus this year, bad news: the first-person shooter has been pushed back to early 2019. The third instalment in THQ's nuclear-ravaged survival series was announced at E3 2017 during Microsoft's press conference. The trailer started in a snowy wasteland — a staple of the Metro franchise — before switching to an underground tunnel swarming with ghoulish creatures. The hero later battled his way to the the surface, revealing a new woodland location filled with broken buildings and telephone masts. A second cinematic trailer was then shown at The Game Awards last December. As with previous entries, the game is loosely based on the Metro novels penned by Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky.

  • Japan and trains: The love affair

Snowfall causing train delays is nothing new. In the UK, where I'm from, this happens with hilarious, infuriating regularity. But last week, the first snow of 2016 brought Tokyo's central railway lines and Metro to a halt: hour-long delays between stations normally located minutes apart, packed platforms and a lot of complaints. That's because Japan's railway system typically works flawlessly, from the immaculately clean trains that service the distant southern isles of Japan to the experimental high-speed, floating maglev cars that might hit 372 miles per hour. If you love trains, you'll love Japan. And I just love them.

As of this week, Linux and Steam OS users on Steam can brave the bleak wasteland and mutated beasts in 4A Games' Metro Redux, a double feature that includes touched-up versions of Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. Minimum requirements for both platforms can be found after the break, and a tour through Metro Redux's take on Moscow is available on Steam for $24.98 until December 15. If you're totally in the dark on the Metro series, check in with this trailer that sets the premise and explains the improvements made over the previous releases on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. • Mozilla's Firefox app for Windows 8 delayed again until mid-March

Though Windows 8 has now been out for a year and change, there's still no Firefox browser dedicated to its tile-y interface. That situation's not improving, as Mozilla has just announced that its 'Metro' Modern UI-look version has been further delayed to March 18th. We were expecting it to arrive this month following delays that have plagued it since it was first announced nearly two years ago. However, the team pushed back all Firefox releases for two weeks to let workers enjoy the holidays, which didn't help matters. If you're feeling brave, you can still check it out by downloading one of the nightly builds, but judging by the logs, you'll still need to dodge a lot of bugs.

  • Holy sales, Batman! Arkham series and Metro lead this week's deals

If you're a PC gamer looking forward to Friday's release of Batman: Arkham Origins and have yet to scoop up the previous two entries in the series, now might be a good time to do so, as they're 75 percent off on Steam until Monday, 10 am Pacific. That makes Batman: Arkham Asylum just $5.00, and Batman: Arkham City just $7.50. Both versions are Game of the Year editions, meaning even more batarang for your buck. Not a bat-fan? Amazon has unearthed savings on Tomb Raider and Metro: Last Light, which are both on sale for $19.99 through the week, while Best Buy is helping aspiring gamer musicians get into the groove by taking $50 off the cost of any electric guitar when you buy Rocksmith 2014. Lots of good things on sale, stranger.
