At first glance, there were definitely some things we liked about Samsung's 10.2 megapixel NV24HD: the UI's touch-sensitive buttons (as opposed to a crowded touchscreen), the 2.5-inch AMOLED display looks great (even in direct sunlight) and the camera shoots generous 720p, 30fps video. Now the folks at PC Magazine have had a chance to give the thing a more in-depth going over, and for the most part they seem to think the camera isn't half bad. They say the $349 point-and-shoot works well enough in perfect conditions (outdoors on a sunny day), but cite "weak indoor shots," heavier than average barrel distortion on the telephoto lens, and a bit of pincushion distortion on the wide angle lens as reasons you might want to give this camera a pass. If you're still interested, you can expect the usual features: face detection, image stabilization and scene settings, and an optional cradle ($79.99) offers and HDMI connection to your HDTV (plus a tiny remote). Samsung and pretty much everyone else is taking a long hard look at their clumsy UIs as consumer electronics continue to commodify. We've certainly seen that demonstrated with striking effect with the Samsung F480's unfortunately named TouchWiz interface. Now take a look at the UI for Samsung's NV24HD. Besides shooting 720p video, this 10.2 megapixel shooter with 24-mm ultra-wide angle lens features a series of touch-sensitive buttons surrounding a brilliant 2.5-inch AMOLED display. An interesting twist on the lifeless touch-screens we've seen on other cameras. However, it does so at the expense of screen size on a crowded back panel. Still, we're a bit smitten by the user experience which we quickly got the hang of. See for yourself in the video after the break.

  • Samsung launches the NV40, NV30, NV4 and NV24HD digital cameras

Your good buddies at Samsung UK are introducing a handful of new entries into its tried and true, compact NV line -- the NV40, NV30, NV4, and NV24HD. Most interesting of the lot is the latter, the NV24HD, which is the company's first HD still camera, a 10-megapixel shooter that also does 720p HD, and can send its juicy images via HDMI to your favorite HDTV. The NV40, on the other hand, is a 10-megapixel camera with 3 x zoom, ISO up to 3200, and a 2.5-inch LCD display. The NV30 is a similarly spec'd camera, but drops the resolution to 8-megapixels (though retains the company's ASR and red eye reduction features). The story is largely the same for the NV4, which the company claims is a "practical yet multipurpose" device. The NV24HD will run you £249 (or $491), the NV40 comes in at £199 ($392), £179 for the NV30, and the NV4 will run you £149 ($294).
