EPA will roll back rules on methane emissions

Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to announce plans to roll back regulations on methane emissions, a major contributor to climate change. The Trump Administration is seeking to do away with Obama-era requirements, which mandated that the oil and gas industry install technology to monitor and limit natural gas leaks from infrastructure like wells, tanks and pipelines, The Wall Street Journal reports. The change could also block proposed rules that would have required the EPA to set emissions regulations on thousands of pre-existing wells and industry sites.

Texas court rules 2015 revenge porn law is unconstitutional

Revenge porn is getting attention across the nation as state, regional and even federal lawmakers wrestle with how to deal with the practice of posting private, intimate photos of people without their permission. A 2015 Texas law that made revenge porn a misdemeanor with up to a year of jail time and a $4,000 fine was struck down by the 12th Court of Appeals as violating the First Amendment. The court also dropped a charge against Jordan Bartlett Jones, who challenged the law after he was denied a Writ of Habeas Corpus last year.

  • French court reverses DS flash cart ruling, Nintendo smiles

Nearly two years ago, a French court dismissed a lawsuit that Nintendo filed against a group of vendors accused of illegally selling DS flash carts. At the time, the game-maker argued that sales of the cartridges should be halted on the grounds that they could be used to illegally pirate software, but the presiding judge thought differently, countering that the R4-like devices could be used to develop homebrews or other DIY projects. Last week, however, the Paris Court of Appeals overturned the ruling, in a decision that Nintendo has met with understandable delight. In a statement released today, the company confirmed that Divineo SARL and five other flash cart retailers must pay a total of €460,000 in criminal fines, along with €4.8 million in damages to Nintendo, as ordered by the appeals court. Details behind the ruling remain vague, though Nintendo hailed it as a "strong message to French companies... that such activities are illegal and will not be tolerated," and that convicted vendors will "risk prison terms, face substantial fines and obligations to pay damages." • European Nintendo downloads: Sonic & Knuckles, Frogger Returns, Overturn

It's a return of two classic mascots on the Wii this week, sort of. A good Sonic the Hedgehog game -- and, in fact, one that is kind of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 -- is up on the Virtual Console, with Lock-On tech intact; and Konami's Frogger is doing what he does best (almost dying in traffic). And also there's a game about robots shooting each other, but that doesn't really fit into the theme. Sonic & Knuckles (Mega Drive, 1 player, 800 Wii Points) Frogger Returns (WiiWare, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Overturn: Mecha Wars (WiiWare, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Electroplankton: Rec-Rec (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Electroplankton: Lumiloop (DSiWare, 1 player, 200 DSi Points) Sudoku 4Pockets (DSiWare, 1 player, 500 DSi Points) Let's Golf (DSiWare, 1-2 players, 800 DSi Points)

Following a weekend of play against the team, Studio Zan has announced another cool initiative for Overturn's online mode: the ability for American players to connect and fight with Japanese players! "As more gamers from Japan join in on the fun," Studio Zan told us in a press release, "the game will offer more match ups against more different types of gamers that use more different variations of mechs and fighting strategies."Of course, since the game's been out in Japan since last December, anyone who's still online and looking for opponents is a seasoned veteran, and thus basically invincible. But the good news is that you can see how those invincible players have customized their mechs! %Gallery-35205%

  • Take on Overturn's developers this weekend

Have you been enjoying Studio Zan's robot fighting game Overturn? Why not show your appreciation by letting the game's development staff destroy you in combat? (You probably won't have to let them.) Or, to put a nicer spin on it, by showing the developers your customized mech! (Which will then be destroyed.) Starting today through September 6, Studio Zan will be online in Overturn from 6PM through 12AM PST under the name "StudioZan," looking to engage players in matches. This kind of thing seems common on Xbox Live, but it doesn't happen that often in WiiWare games -- mostly, we suppose, because online play doesn't happen that often in WiiWare games. All the more reason to appreciate Studio Zan!%Gallery-35205%

This week is a special one for Nintendo fans. Not only do we finally see an end to the Virtual Console drought, but we also get fighting robots and a new Art Style game. Oh, and then there's Sexy Poker, Gameloft's odd strip poker game for WiiWare. We guess the company never heard of Google image search?%Gallery-35205%

Studio Zan just let us know that Overturn, the WiiWare combat game released last year in Japan, should be available on the North American Wii Shop this Monday, August 3, at a cost of 800 Wii Points. Unlike the European version, it seems that Studio Zan is "publishing" the North American release on its own.Overturn features both offline multiplayer for 2 players, and online modes for up to four, in which players will take control of customizable mechs and, well, beat the hell out of one another using weapons earned in previous battles. If you'd like, you can even use a Balance Board to control your robot's movement.%Gallery-35205%

As mentioned in the announcement of Squibs Arcade, Nintendo of Europe is holding a WiiWare (and DSiWare) media summit this week. During the event, Nintendo released a list of WiiWare and DSiWare games planned for release between April and June. On WiiWare, the biggest news is Cave Story! Even though we knew it was scheduled for release in April or May, seeing more confirmation of that (for more regions) is great! Swords & Soldiers is also on the way. In addition, there are also a few games we haven't heard much (or anything) about. Each game has a brief description in Nintendo's announcement. Bonsai Barber Cave Story ColorZ Crystal Defenders R1 Icarian: Kindred Spirits LIT Overturn: Mecha Wars Robocalypse: Beaver Defense Spaceball: Revolution Squibs Arcade Swords & Soldiers Water Warfare In DSiWare, the most exciting title (to us) is Nintendo's Art Style: PiCOPiCT, a retro-Nintendo-themed puzzler with reinterpreted NES music by YMCK. • WiiWare mech combat game Overturn turns westward

Studio Zan's Overturn looked great when it came out in Japan last December. Well, seemed great -- the graphics are a bit rough. The WiiWare mech combat game had some pretty enticing features: both local and online multiplayer, and even Balance Board compatibility. The only feature it lacked was a known Western publisher. We're thrilled to learn that Gamebridge, a new European publisher formed from a partnership between Japanese publisher Interchannel and Nintendo distributor Bergsala, has picked up Overturn for the European market, to be published as Overturn: Mecha Wars. We've contacted Gamebridge to determine whether the release is also planned for North America, but at the very least, a localized version will make the game more enticing for potential American publishers. Gamebridge will release more details about the price and date in May.%Gallery-35205%

  • VC Tuesday: Space Invaders Get Overturned

Nintendo of Japan has started off December the right way: with a bunch of video games. Between Virtual Console and WiiWare, an astounding six new (or new to Wii) games are available in Japan today. Of course, one of those games is Atlantis no Nazo, which was so bad, it was almost released as a sequel to Super Pitfall. The other, Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi (Day of Resurrection) contains the original Invaders along with a "Plus" mode that adds new graphics and powerups. It's also 200 points cheaper than the other version of original Space Invaders. Atlantis no Nazo (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi (PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points) The WiiWare game you're most likely to care about is Overturn, the Balance Board-compatible, online robot fighting game. We like Yomikikase Asobi Wii, the interactive Momotarou storybook, but it's got pretty tough competition from online robot fighting. Overturn (1-2 players, 800 Wii Points) Pit Crew Panic! (1-4 players, 500 Wii Points) Hamaru Billiards (1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) Yomikikase Asobi Wii (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points) %Gallery-35205%

Studio Zan is lining up a November release in Japan for Overturn, a new vehicular combat game that sees manga characters (who look oddly out of place next to the game's 3D arenas) take control of hulking great robots.Overturn has yet to be priced or confirmed for a western release, but a Game Watch preview reveals that it will come with a Story mode, local multiplayer, WiFi play for upto four players, Balance Board compatibility, and full online leaderboards. Nice. Oh, and it reminds us of Robot Wars. %Gallery-35205%

  • Shocking DualShock case still not going Sony's way

Sony's attempt to overturn the 2004 ruling on Immersion's haptic technology patents and receive a new trial was denied in court recently. The Wall Street Journal tells quite a tale concerning another force-feedback inventor, originally a paid consultant of Immersion, who allegedly received advance royalties from Sony in exchange for testimony against his former client. There's enough drama in this case to fill a television soap opera--or, better yet, a police or crime-scene procedural. For the full contents of the article, you'll need to log in as a subscriber to the Journal through the picture above or the Read link below. We don't know to what extent this courtroom drama will affect the "boomerang" PS3 prototype controller design, future DualShock 2 availability and compatibility, or any possible delays to the new system itself, but Sony's separate appeal in federal court has yet to be ruled on, leaving the company one more crucial legal avenue to pursue in this matter.[Via Joystiq]
