New photos emerge of Sony Ericsson Paris, Twilight Zone theme heard in the distance
Last we heard, Sony Ericsson was planning to hold a memorial service for the untimely death of the so-called Paris smartphone. Now, however, we're being treated to a new smorgasbord of photos and a woefully small amount of details, leaving us to wonder if these are shots of an exhumed handset or images foreshadowing a revival. Comically enough, we've seen both scenarios from SE before; the former with the still-dead W707 Alicia and the latter with the now-kicking W595s. We'll remain cautiously pessimistic for the time being, but we won't completely discount the power of good fortune.[Thanks, Daniel]
Early look at Sony Ericsson Paris: it's basically a G900
Those looking for a smartphone revolution on the wings of Sony Ericsson's forthcoming Paris (or whatever the heck it's called) need look no further than another model already in the company's stable: the touchscreen-equipped G900. At least that's the intel we're getting from mobile-review, a site renowned for its uncanny ability to get access to pretty much any device it chooses well ahead of release -- and often before announcement. Software builds and hardware specs in current prototypes of the Paris floating around are apparently dead ringers for the aforementioned G900, save for the obvious form factor change, rocker style QWERTY keypad, and integrated GPS. Those changes that will allegedly see the Paris get a €50 premium over its little brother for a grand total of €400 (about $628) when it launches in September; in the meantime, there's some screen shot entertainment in mobile-review's quick take, and given the overwhelming leakiness of this thing so far, we imagine there's plenty more where that came from before it ships.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
It's not the P5, it's not the Paris, it's the Sony Ericsson P200
The so-called Paris halo phone from Sony Ericsson has been rumored as a successor to the P1 seemingly since before the P1 even existed, promising a sliding QWERTY rocker keypad, HSDPA, serious shooting power, and a fashion sense that should let it fit in both in social and corporate settings with equal aplomb. It's a minor detail, granted, but now it looks like we know what to call it: P200. That's the official model number being floated by a leaked profile document on Sony Ericsson's site, though the mention of mere QVGA resolution to fill the rumored 2.6-inch display is a pretty big downer. With high-res displays finally becoming a big deal in smartphones this year, we can imagine a decent number of shoppers passing over this one thanks to that little indiscretion alone. Samsung rolls out 12.1-inch P200 business ultraportable for Europe
We don't see much of Samsung's laptops around these parts, and it doesn't look like the P200 is headed Stateside either, but it's certainly a solid entry into the ultraportable market -- which seems to be the new hotness these days. The laptop has been circulating in the UK since February, but is finally "official" here at CeBIT. The P200 runs on "Intel's latest" chips, up to the Core 2 Duo 9500, and integrated graphics come courtesy of ATI's Radeon Xpress 1250, with the laptop wringing 3.1 hours of life out of those chips with a 6-cell battery. The 12.1-inch 1280 x 800 screen is no-gloss, and includes a built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam. The laptop also packs Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Atheros Super G WiFi, 6-in-1 memory card reader, PCI Express card slot a whopping two USB ports. The whole kit weighs in at rather hefty-for-its-class 4.2 pounds, and is available in Europe today starting at € 999 ( $1,517 US).%Gallery-17357%
Clarion's N.I.C.E. P200 in-car navigation batteries recalled
No, the word "recall" isn't entirely synonymous with "battery," but in this case, we're afraid the dreaded overheating Li-ion curse has struck again. This time the recall is hitting Clarion's N.I.C.E. P200 in-car navigation / entertainment unit, and the problem seems to be the same as nearly every other recall currently out -- it's too hot for comfort. Reportedly, about 2,500 units are potentially problematic, and with "four reports of the unit melting or overheating" due to a faulty Li-ion cell, the company isn't taking any chances. So if you've got the 4-inch flavor of Clarion's do-it-all with a serial number ended in "UE" or "UF," you should power that bad boy down immediately (and call for a free replacement) before that "NAVBATTERY" gets a little hot under the collar.
Orange launches "Unique" dual-mode service
UMA appears to be picking up a nice head of steam both domestically and internationally; Orange is the latest to join the fray with their newly-minted service dubbed simply "Unique." As expected, the service uses Orange's wireless broadband router (the Livebox, pictured) to provide the VoIP connection at home, while GSM takes over out on the mean streets Orange's launch locales: the UK, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Poland. Up to six handsets will be supported per Livebox, which can all be routed onto a single bill -- a bill that should hopefully stay reasonably low thanks to unlimited landline and Orange mobile calling via VoIP. Launch handsets will be the Motorola A910, Nokia 6136, and Samsung P200 (a cousin of the Americanized T709), which (pardon our jaded humor) is three more handsets than we have in our hands right now for T-Mobile's stalled UMA launch.[Via Shiny Shiny]
Samsung brings SGH-P200 UMA phone to Italy
We've been pining after Unlicensed Mobile Access and the promise of seamless VoIP / cellular handoffs for so long, we've admittedly become a little jaded, so forgive us if we seem a bit desensitized to the news that Samsung has launched its SGH-P200 UMA slider in Italy this week. Samsung's claiming that the P200 is the world's first commercially available UMA mobile, and we're inclined to believe them, despite a string of promising announcements over the past couple years that have yet to materialize. UMA aside, the P200 sports a 1.3 megapixel camera, EDGE, smallish 220 x 176 display, and 80MB of shared internal memory in a 22.5mm thick package -- fairly pedestrian specs, but hey, the draw of VoIP is strong, is it not? Expect the phone to spread elsewhere in Europe shortly, while our American friends shouldn't have much longer to wait for the similarly styled T709 on T-Mobile.
