Samsung Display to make 90Hz OLED screens for laptops
What would you prefer in your next gaming laptop? An OLED panel with excellent contrast and deep black levels, or a different display technology that can surpass 60Hz? Samsung Display has announced plans to manufacture “the world’s first” 90Hz OLED panels destined for laptops and notebooks.
Pixel 4 update lets Smooth Display kick in more often
Frustrated that the Pixel 4's signature Smooth Display (aka 90Hz refresh rate) only kicks in under very specific circumstances? You might want to give it another look. Google has released a November update that invokes Smooth Display in more conditions. Based on early reports, the faster screen tech is considerably more likely to appear -- you don't need a brightness of 75 percent or higher, for example. There's no verdict on battery life at this point, although it won't be surprising if longevity takes a hit with more frequent 90Hz use.
Pixel 4 XL teardown reveals remarkably tiny Soli chip
When Google announced the Pixel 4 earlier this month, the company's Sabrina Ellis spent a part of the keynote talking about the work her team invested in making Project Soli into something that could fit inside of a smartphone. It turns out Ellis wasn't overstating things: the radar chip is so small, the repair experts at iFixit had trouble finding it when they recently took apart the Pixel 4 XL.
Google explains when it slows down the Pixel 4's Smooth Display
Google just unveiled the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, and it's already got a lot of explaining to do. In addition to announcing a fix for Face Unlock that would make eye-detection necessary, the company also had to clarify today that the phone's Smooth Display feature doesn't behave the way most people expected. One of the most intriguing features of the new flagships is that their screens run at a faster-than-average 90 Hz, so things like animations, scrolling through a website or compatible games look smoother.
Oppo made a Gundam edition of its fast-charging Reno Ace phone
As teased last month, Oppo's latest flagship phone, the Reno Ace, is unveiled today. We already knew about the device's 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 feature which charges its 4,000mAh battery in just 30 minutes, thus setting an impressive record in the industry. What's surprising is perhaps the Gundam 40th anniversary edition Reno Ace: only 30,000 of these special units will be available, and both the phone and packaging come in matching designs that pay homage to the RX-78-2. I mean, just look at that cute protection case.
