Samsung's Galaxy S10 5G is available for pre-order at Verizon
Verizon (Engadget's parent company) has opened pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. You'll need access to 5G connections to get the most out of the device of course, so the provider has also named 20 more cities in which it will turn on its mobile 5G network this year.

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. "Better eight years late than never," PlayStation Network users probably said during this week's return of Vib-ribbon. Sure, we're not exactly in drought season, but what's stopping you from impulsively bailing on 2014's release calendar to revisit a 1999 cult classic? Beyond money and life's responsibilities, anyway. If Vib-ribbon is fair game for a 2014 appearance, can we go ahead and get our hopes for comparably-unlikely surprises? Sure, StarCraft: Ghost's indefinitely-on-hold status is probably irreversible at this point, but if Blizzard felt like continuing development in secret for years and launching it without warning, we wouldn't be upset. Valve, you're more than welcome to do the same with fresh installments in the Half Life or Left 4 Dead series. There was more to this week than feeble wishes though, including resolution news for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Assassin's Creed: Unity, reviews for Driveclub and Neverending Nightmares, and previews for AC: Unity and Resident Evil: Revelations 2. Cincinnati Bell to offer iPhone 5 from August 16
Another US regional wireless carrier is set to offer the iPhone this week. As of August 16th, Cincinnati Bell will offer Apple's iPhone 5 to customers. Cincinnati Bell is a 140-year-old telephone company in Ohio, and interestingly, it illustrates the dilemma many smaller regional carriers face when considering the iPhone. As the Cincinnati Enquirer explains: Cincinnati Bell plans to start carrying Apple's iPhone 5 this month, which will be the first time the company has offered the popular phone. Why the company's opted against carrying the iPhone until now vividly illustrates its wireless dilemma: Apple can force carriers to buy a certain number of iPhones, and those carriers must eat the cost of any unsold iPhones. Carriers also typically subsidize the cost of the $600 iPhones, which they sell for about $200. In order to afford the cost of the iPhone 5, Cincinnati Bell will actually sell the 16 GB model to customers for US$299 instead of the typical $199 on contract. The company will be offering a $100 credit for those who trade in a smartphone on August 17th or 18th when they purchase an iPhone 5.

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com. A tipster sent us video from ESPN's NFL draft coverage, asking us to identify the giant phone in University of Georgia wide receiver AJ Green's hand. Turns out it's a white Dell Streak, perhaps the only phone on the market capable of dwarfing the Cincinnati Bengals' fourth overall pick by comparison. Keep in mind, Green is a big guy -- he's 6 feet, 4 inches. He also catches footballs for a living, so we figure that, at the very least, he's got to have average hands for a man of his size. Sprint and Clearwire deliver WiMAX to Los Angeles, Ohio, Miami and Washington DC, promise SF on December 28th
Seems like Sprint wants to get every last lick of 4G coverage in before Verizon flips the switch on LTE -- today, its joint venture with Clearwire is launching WiMAX in the City of Angels a day ahead of schedule. Lest you think Los Angeles is getting special treatment, five other cellular markets can now also get a taste of 5Mbps to 7Mbps download speeds, including Miami, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and our nation's capitol, Washington D.C. That brings the total number of regions where you'll get some mileage out of that $10 surcharge up to 68, in case you're keeping track. What's next? If the press release after the break is correct, San Francisco will finally satisfy its need for speed on December 28th. Not that any of these locales haven't been secretly enjoying 4G already, of course.
Motorola's Milestone XT720 makes US debut... on Cincinnati Bell
We aren't quite sure what kind of deal Cincinnati Bell has going on, but darn if this regional carrier doesn't score some fairly fantastic handsets. Also known for landing Nokia's white E71 and its XpressMusic 5800 first in the US, the operator is now the first American home to Motorola's Milestone XT720. As we'd heard most recently, the smartphone packs a 720MHz TI OMAP3440 processor, 3.7-inch FWVGA touchpanel (854 x 480), Android 2.1, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, an inbuilt accelerometer, USB 2.0 connectivity, proximity sensor, 8 megapixel camera (with Xenon flash) and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It's yours for the taking -- provided that you reside in southeastern Indiana, southwestern Ohio or northwestern Kentucky, that is -- but the $199.99 on contract ($449.99 sans strings) price tag might just push towards more fully featured alternatives. The digital TV transition is (finally) almost here (again,) but as frustrating as it's been for us watching TV, there's been considerable planning and equipment in place for broadcasters that is where the actual change happens. Check out this YouTube video (embedded after the break) of CET Cincinnati signing off of analog broadcasts for the last time just a few days ago. Daktronics & Sony bring HD to Cincinnati Reds home ballpark
Daktronics has made a name outfitting stadiums across the country with high definition scoreboards and the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati is no different. Reds fans can look forward to a 138 by 39 foot high main scoreboard, plus two other displays behind left field, and the first use of Daktronics' HD-16 LED technology for a higher res ribbon board along the first and third base lines. TWC definitely bringing new HD channels to Dayton / Cincinnati, Ohio
We knew that Time Warner Cable was pretty close to locking down some serious HD additions in Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio, and now we've been informed that both system lineups are go for viewing. In Dayton, users will see SciFi HD (778), USA HD (779), Animal Planet HD (780), Science HD (781), ESPNews HD (782) and Golf Channel HD (783). Over in Cincy, locals will find the same networks but on different slots (detailed after the break). Happy New Year, indeed. TWC lines up a new batch of HD additions for Southwest Ohio
Time Warner Cable came through on its promise to bring 14 new high-definition channels to Cincinnati, Ohio this month, so we don't see any reason why it'll let locals down in December. According to a blurb on the carrier's website, it is "currently involved in discussions" to bring a whole heap of new HD channels to Southwest Ohio. If agreements can be nailed down within the next few weeks, residents could see USA HD, Sci-Fi HD, MSNBC HD, Bravo HD, Science Channel HD, Animal Planet HD, ESPNews HD, FX HD, Weather Channel HD, Golf Channel HD, Versus HD, Big Ten Network HD, Cinemax HD and Starz HD. TWC placing 14 new HD channels in Cincinnati, Ohio
Hot on the heels of TWC announcing a new truckload of high-def channels for the Carolinas comes a similar announcement for Cincinnati, Ohio. According to a pamphlet being sent out to resident Time Warner Cable customers, 14 new ones are heading to the EPG by the year's end, with Palladia HD, Disney Channel HD, Discovery Channel HD, ABC Family HD, TLC HD, ESPNU HD, FOX News HD, Hallmark Movie Channel HD, CNN HD, WPTO HD (ThinkTV based in Oxford, OH) being added in November and Animal Planet HD, ESPNews HD, The Weather Channel HD and Science Channel HD in December. Cincinnati's own WXIX gears up for HD news transition
Cincinnati's Fox 19 has come a long way over the years, but it's still lagging behind in one huge area: HD newscasts. Thankfully for residents of the Ohio city, all that's about to change... at least, according to news director Steve Ackermann. Reportedly, WXIX will move this week into its high-def-ready news set, and if all goes as planned, it could become the second station in the area to broadcast local news in HDTV within "a couple of weeks." AMP test drives all-electric Saturn Sky on video
Remember that Ohio-based firm that planned on converting 300 or so Saturn Skys into all-electric roadsters? Advanced Mechanical Products ring a bell? At any rate, said outfit has just hosted up a video of its fourth test drive of a prototype, which is shown sporting an "Electric" badge on the front fender and a whole mess of batteries and wires underneath the hood. Cincinnati Bengals to broadcast preseason games in HD, four fans celebrate uncontrollably
Let's face it -- there's hardly a good reason to spend a few good hours of your night glued to a preseason matchup where the starters barely even sniff the field, but those hardcore Bengals fans who vehemently disagree will be thrilled by this. The team has announced that, for the first time, each of the club's four preseason tilts will be broadcast in high-definition and presented by hhgregg. TWC customers to see Cincinnati Reds in HD this season?
Considering that every single New York Mets and Toronto Blue Jays matchup will be seen in HD in their respective markets, it's understandable for Reds fans to long for more than Time Warner Cable delivered last season. During 2007, TWC failed to carry the initial 33 Cincinnati Reds games on FSN Ohio in HD, but according to Karen Baxter, public affairs director for the carrier's southwest Ohio division, it's hoping to "be able to offer the Reds in HDTV this year." Notably, Insight brought these very games to its Northern Kentucky subscribers last year in HD, making Ohio residents that much more upset to be left in the pixelated dark. Still, considering that DirecTV and DISH Network has access to all 71 FSN Ohio HDTV games, we're hoping Time Warner steps up to the proverbial plate here and gives the local Reds fans a clearer picture this go 'round -- particularly since we know the channel itself is already on the way. FSN Ohio HD, National Geographic HD coming to TWC Cincinnati / Dayton
Make no mistake, Time Warner Cable is showing the great state of Ohio some serious love. Just days after four new HD channels were announced for the Columbus market and four others arrived in Cleveland, e-mails are now being received by TWC subscribers in the Dayton / Cincinnati region that confirm National Geographic HD and FSN Ohio HD are on the way. Yep, starting on March 25th, customers in the aforementioned locales will see Nat Geo HD on slots 757 (Dayton) / 983 (Cincy) and FSN Ohio HD on channel 768 (Dayton) / 968 (Cincy). Cincinnati's CET moving to 24-hour HD broadcast
CET, the PBS station serving Cincinnati, Ohio, is getting set to switch over to a 24-hour HD broadcast. Currently, WCET-TV broadcasts some "prepackaged HD shows from PBS," but starting on December 17th at noon, it will boast high-definition content around the clock. Additionally, it's making CrEaTe -- "an American Public Television channel [currently] accessible only by Time Warner Cable (partly owned by Time Warner, parent company of AOL, which owns Engadget) viewers" -- available to anyone who can receive the HD signal. Beginning next Monday, programs will be simulcast in analog on channel 48, in HD on channel 48.1 (OTA), on channel 948 on Time Warner Cable and on channel 916 for those with Insight Cable. As for satellite viewers? They'll have to "contact their provider to arrange for the CET digital signal."
Horizon partners with Navini to spread WiMAX across Northeast US
Following up on Sprint's announcement to spread the WiMAX love to Chicago and Washington, D.C., Horizon is looking to broaden that area of coverage out just a bit by partnering with Navini Networks. This news comes after the FCC approved Horizon's purchase of the WCS A Block spectrum previously owned by the diminishing Verizon, and now the firm is looking to deploy the wireless goods in "Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Richmond, and Cincinnati" for starters. Horizon has selected Navini's 802.16e equipment to get things up and running, and states that its objective it to "provide wireless last mile access to residential, business, and emergency restoration markets," but folks in rural areas will seemingly get shunned for now. Horizon isn't wasting any time getting this thing started, either, as it plans to start building the network in Q1 of this year, with hopes for "ongoing expansion and additional network deployments in the latter part of 2007."[Via TheWirelessReport]
Ohio hotel to implement RFID room-key wriststraps
Well, if RFID is good enough for passports and credit cards, then it must certainly be good enough for hotel rooms, right? Apparently that's the logic at the Great Wolf Lodge at Paramount King's Island in Mason, Ohio (that's just outside Cincinnati), which will be implementing RFID-enabled wristbands when the hotel opens on December 14. The wristband will open your hotel room door and pay for food and drinks at various locations while on the theme-park island. Of course, given all that we've heard about RFID being hacked left and right, we're not exactly convinced that making it easier for someone to gain access to your hotel room is a good idea. But perhaps those folks in Mason are too busy reading Blogging Ohio instead of Engadget to worry about such fussiness.[Via The Wireless Report]
