Amazon, in a bid to recoup recent outlay, is offering open-world vigilante-em-up Watch Dogs as its Gold Box Deal of the Day. Ubisoft's game with the waggly tail is down from $60 to $36 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the PC version nearly half-price at $32. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions are available at $40. If you've really got money to burn, the normally $130 Limited Edition is going for $85. It bundles in a steel book case, the soundtrack, a real-life vigilante mask for use on your own hacking exploits, a hardcover art book, and a 9 inch Aiden Pearce statue.

  • Xbox 360 250 GB Holiday bundle is $239 today on Amazon

Microsoft's Xbox 360 Kinect Holiday Value Bundle is on sale for $239 as part of today's Gold Box discounts on Amazon. Those that act fast will get the redesigned Xbox 360 E console loaded with a 250 GB hard drive, a controller, a Kinect camera and three games: Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports: Season 2 and a download code for Forza Horizon. The bundle normally costs $399, amounting to enough savings to pick up a few extra games, or better yet, groceries so you don't starve this month. Again, the deal is only on for today as long as supplies last, and is a great deal for people that haven't bought an Xbox 360 in the last few days like your humble Joystiq editor has. It's also a good deal for those that aren't picking up a PS4 or Xbox One this coming month.

Like a stealthy jungle cat patiently waiting for its tired, limping prey to drop its guard, so too does Amazon's devious sales engine stalk the emaciated husk of our post-December wallet. Its latest attempt at snaring our monetary entrails, an all-games Gold Box Event, will begin at 3 a.m. Eastern time on the morning of Tuesday, February 19.We won't know exactly what said Gold Box Event's Lightning Deals or Deal of the Day will consist of until Tuesday. In the meantime, Amazon has also marked down a sizable number of games and accessories as part of its Winter Deals sale, which includes Halo 4 and a year of Xbox Live Gold for about $40 each.

Time-limited deals throughout the day include, well, a lot of Zumbas. There are also some assorted non-Zumba offers, like Epic Mickey 2 at 1pm PST/4pm EST, a Black Ops 2 headset at 8pm PST/11pm EST and some kind of arcade stick at 10pm PST/1am EST. You can try to play Zumba with that, but it won't be a great aerobic workout.

  • Gold Boxes for a Golden Age of RPGs

    by
    Rowan Kaiser

    08.24.2012

This is a weekly column from freelancer Rowan Kaiser, which focuses on "Western" role-playing games: their stories, their histories, their mechanics, their insanity, and their inanity. Strategic Simulations Inc.'s "Gold Box" series of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons games were one of the biggest franchises of the Western RPG's heyday, during the late 1980s and early 1990s. SSI broke into the top tier of computer role-playing game publishers by making effective use of their AD&D license with Pool of Radiance (1988) and its sequel, Curse of the Azure Bonds (1989). Their "Gold Box" game engine became one of the most prevalent within the genre, with around a dozen games in the series being released between 1988 and 1993.All of the Gold Box games look and play in essentially the same fashion. You roll a party of six characters. Most of the games have overland maps, on which the party is merely a square traveling between cities and dungeons, but the bulk of the game's exploration takes place in dungeons in a first-person perspective. The bulk of a Gold Box game takes place in combat, on a tactical grid. More than most other RPGs of the era, the Gold Box games focus on the details of their tactical combat. A single battle can be quick, or larger battles can take up to an hour. Space and movement are important considerations in combat, unlike Wizardry or Might & Magic. For example, if your character is standing next to an enemy and then moves away, the enemy gets a free opportunity attack.

The very recent Prototype 2 enjoys a deep discount on Amazon today, as the all-day component to the retailer's Gold Box offers. It's on sale for $29.99, and will be joined by a new, temporary deal every couple of hours.Currently, that deal is the Wii's Cyberbike, which is, yes, an exercise bike that hooks up to the Wii. Thrifty Nerd's Googling of the clues for future sales suggest we'll see discounts on Final Fantasy XIII-2, WoW: Cataclysm, the Disgaea 4 Premium Edition, and even the SoulCalibur V Arcade Fightstick.

  • The Game Archaeologist: Dark Sun Online

Computer RPG players in the late '80s and early '90s were surely familiar with Strategic Simulations, Inc. (SSI) and its now-infamous Gold Box series. The series, so named because of their distinctive gold packaging, ran on a solid engine that helped the company churn out over a dozen titles within a five-year span. From Dungeons & Dragons' Pool of Radiance to Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday, these titles quickly became revered among the gaming community. I personally have very fond memories of playing both Buck Rogers titles, despite not having ever watched the show. While the Gold Box series has not become as timeless or replayable as late '90s classics like Baldur's Gate and Fallout, they definitely had a huge impact on the PC scene and helped elevate the CRPG genre. Following the Gold Box engine, SSI went on to produce another engine that it used for a completely new series set in the D&D campaign setting of Dark Sun. Dark Sun: Shattered Lands (1993) and Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager (1994) were both modest hits, and when it came time for a third game in the series, SSI decided to make the leap to the then-untested realm of online gaming. What followed was a wild two-year experiment in MMOs that happened prior to the Ultima Online and EverQuest generation. While ultimately unsuccessful in achieving its potential or gaining a large audience, Dark Sun Online: Crimson Sands made a valiant attempt at achieving the inevitable future of gaming.

  • Amazon Deal of the Day: Cataclysm for $20

    06.28.2011

If you've started a new account recently or have been waiting to purchase Cataclysm, now's your shot to get the newest expansion on Amazon for only $20. Cataclysm is Amazon's Gold Box deal of the day, with a reduced price for only 24 hours. The deal is currently on the U.S. Amazon store, but the boxed copy of Cataclysm can be added or applied to any region's account. With the recent sales in the EU for WoW and The Burning Crusade, as well as the free copies of WoW that were distributed to game veterans to give away, Blizzard is making a hard push at getting WoW into more peoples' hands and lowering the admittedly high barrier to entry of an MMO that's now 6+ years old. Hopefully, we will see this barrier come down even more over time as Blizzard figures out the answer to one of the more difficult questions in the MMO genre -- how will Blizzard deal with expansions once there are too many to reasonably expect new players to buy them all to get the full game experience?

You should probably be familiar with Amazon's Gold Box deals by now, combining daily specials and shorter lightning specials that run for only a few hours or until they sell out. This week it's all about HD, with today's daily deal going to L.A. Noire for a nifty $15 off of the MSRP, and lightning deals that have already included the Lost boxed set (magnets) and a Harmony 900 remote. Check the official page for a full list of items to be offered this week, we'll keep an eye out to see what that "name brand 3D Blu-ray player" is that goes on sale tomorrow morning (Pacific Time) and the price tag for the Star Trek movie collection on Blu-ray. P.S. - Remember the 30 for 30 Complete Set Blu-ray boxed set we mentioned last month? It's on sale at Best Buy this week for $59, while Blu-ray.com forum posters point out a coupon that will take another $5 off -- don't say we never did anything for you.

    02.23.2011

Amazon is offering a spate of gaming deals in its Gold Box today, revealing a new time-limited offer every couple of hours. Strangely, the discounts are about half Wii music-game themed -- things like the Wii versions of Michael Jackson: The Experience (the Deal of the Day at $30), Rock Band 3, and Dance Dance Revolution. However, the non-Wii part includes savings on the DS version of Plants vs. Zombies, Dragon Quest VI, Civilization V and others, so the lack of a fully committed theme is forgivable. Find the list after the break.

    01.18.2011

Today, Amazon's Gold Box is filled with games, offering discounts on a single game or accessory every couple of hours. In addition to that, the Deal of the Day is also a game -- Disney Epic Mickey for $29.99. That makes it quite a bit less risky for those that are interested in the well-reviewed game but scared of, say, the camera. The current Lightning Deal is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 on multiple platforms ($39.99 on PS3 and Xbox 360, $34.99 on Wii, and $19.99 on DS). To see what's coming next, head past the break. Spoiler warning: the Ear Force is strong with this one.
