Not every VR game involves battle or fighting. Some titles, like I Expect You to Die or Fantastic Contraption, are more fun puzzles than violent shoot-em-ups. At the Oculus Connect event last week, I played around with Luna, a game that's more reminiscent of the former. It's a title by Funomena, a San Francisco-based independent studio, and even though it was on display at PAX a couple of months ago, this was the first time I've seen it in person.

  • A concrete iPhone case, because why not?

Sure. You'd be forgiven for thinking that once we had iPhone cases that double as a weapon we'd have reached our logical limit. We're done! Pack it up boys. All the iPhone cases have been designed. That's what we thought. And then we caught a look at Posh-Projects brand new "Luna" iPhone case, a beautiful piece of pop art that gives your phone the appearance of the moon's surface. Oh, and it's made of concrete. The Korean company has already sold out of the first run of the cases, but more are expected for sale soon. Each case has a unique lunar design thanks to the creation process, and since it's made of concrete, you can bet it's going to be one of the sturdiest cases you'll ever own. What we don't know is what kind of damage rubbing the glass back of your iPhone against concrete, even the smoothest concrete, will do. But when you're phone looks like it was carved from a moon rock, would you really care? You can find Posh-Projects full presentation about the Luna here. It's beautifully photographed, even if we have no idea how useful it actually is.

  • New Nokia Luna Bluetooth headsets, now with wireless charging

So yesterday saw a whole bunch of new Nokia-related goodies. There were phones (of course), charging pillows, a slew of retailers offering charging stations, and a bevy of new apps. One thing that didn't get a mention was the new Luna Bluetooth headsets. These may look familiar, but in keeping with the trend, these now also support wireless charging. As always, you have a near rainbow of color choices, and can expect up to eight hours talk time and 35 hours on standby. The NFC-enabled headsets do also have a micro-USB port, should you find yourself away from wireless power options. Sadly, no word on pricing and availability at this time.

  • Nokia outs colorful 603 handset, coupled with NFC-equipped Luna Bluetooth headset

The leaves in your yard may be transitioning to the more subdued hues of autumn, but Nokia's new 603 smartphone certainly isn't. Available in six different back cover colors, this new Symbian Belle handset is powered by a 1GHz processor and boasts a 3.5-inch, capacitive touchscreen with 640 x 360 resolution. It also comes with 2GB of internal memory, a 32GB microSD slot and five megapixel camera, along with full NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities. Speaking of which, the folks in Espoo have also taken this opportunity to unveil their new Luna Bluetooth headset -- an NFC-enabled, in-ear accessory that delivers up to eight hours of extended talk time, as well as a rainbow of colors (see an image after the break). As far as pricing goes, the 603 will set you back €200 (about $275), with the Luna headset sitting at €70 (around $96). Neither will hit the market until Q4 of this year, but you can find more information in the full PR, looming after the break.

  • RoboDynamics Luna: the 5-foot tall personal robotic platform (update: video)

It's a new era for personal robotics. Meet Luna, the fully-programmable robot companion platform that will ship this year. As a platform, RoboDynamics -- a Santa Monica-based company previously grounded in telepresence -- is trying to position Luna as the 5-foot tall "beige box" of modern robotics. She comes with her own one-click Luna App Store, eight "Luna Expansion Ports" (think 12/5 volt USB for robots), and Luna CloudNet where third-parties can sell additional functionality like face recognition to app developers. The robot ships with a number of personality packs and features an 8-inch touchscreen, two cameras, wireless connectivity, a three-mic array, and a variety of sensors. Oh, and she's portable. Remember, Luna's not a prototype, but a real working robot that you can actually take home for the price of an entry-level fully-loaded laptop. Update: While $1,000 is the ultimate target price, the initial batch of limited edition Luna robots will ship in Q4 for $3,000. General availability will begin in the second half of 2012 with final pricing coming later this year. %Gallery-123302%

  • Luna Oaks/Busy Ben lottery time

Twice each year Linden Lab holds a lottery for shop spaces in two prestigious Second Life simulators, where winners score a rent-free lot for a six month lease. The winners can use the store interiors to sell their products (though they are unable to change the exteriors - one of the factors that makes Luna a very popular destination). The Luna Oaks boardwalk allows for a variety of non-mature product, while Busy Ben's Vehicle Lot in Oak Grove is restricted to vehicular sales only. Winners of the last lottery draw have to clear out by Noon SLT (US Pacific) Tuesday, 25 March, and new winners can move in by 1PM SLT Tuesday, 15 April. Would-be entrants in the lottery should check the terms and conditions as they tend to vary slightly from draw to draw.

If you're a fan of the Big Bang suite of board games, you'll be happy to learn that Freeverse has released a fully Universal version of the seven-game package, with performance improvements, sleeker graphics and greater stability. The new version now offers tighter iChat integration so you can better taunt your opponents invite friends to play against you. The updated package weighs in at a hefty 400MB once installed and offers the same games you've come to love: 4-in-a-Row, Backgammon, Checkers, Chess, Mancala, Reversi and Tic-Tac-Toe. The package costs $25 (free for current owners) and you won't feel like a Blue Moon if you buy it. It offers lots of re-play as these games are classics; my kids love them.

  • Could this be the Nokia 8800's successor, the 8900?

Well, it's nice to see Nokia potentially on the verge of outing a new and likely pricey handset, purportedly dubbed the 8900. Of course, Nokia is well known for some of its other fancy sets in this line, and while usually a wee bit weak in the feature department, they make up for it with lovely style and slick material choices. If the pics are to be trusted -- and between you, me, and the hedge, they often are -- this winsome slider sports a shooter in the front -- which likely translates to 3G under the hood -- and a 3.2 megapixel cam 'round the other side. Not much else is known about the rumored Nokia 8900, but we'll hopefully hear some mumblings in the near future.

  • Nokia 8600 "Luna" gets official

    05.31.2007

Nokia's newest and oft rumored "Luna" is finally getting its turn in the spotlight and oh how it shines. This Series 40 phone features quad-band GSM / EDGE, a 2 megapixel camera, translucent smoked glass slider over the keypad, and Nokia's first use of a micro-USB port. Of course this isn't just any Series 40 handset -- OK, well maybe inside it is, unless of course it's rolling with the 5th gen release -- this is top of the line stuff -- at least where price is concerned -- and you will be paying $700 for the luxury of picking one up. The 8600 handset is crafted from stainless steel and glass, and that glass bit, plus the price, is just the ticket for lakes of giant crybaby tears if one of these guys ever hits the pavement. No word on carrier availability yet, but with release planned for sometime in Q2, we have plenty of time to fill in those blanks. Oh yeah, check the gallery below for some more sweet shots.%Gallery-3560%

  • Nokia 8600 goes up for preorder

Yo, Nokia, anyone home? One of the world's largest independent retailers of cellphones is thoroughly outing your 8600 here, and you seem to just be sitting idly by without an official announcement in sight. No bother; we guess the important thing is the phone, not the announcement -- we're just not totally used to it going down this way. As a refresher, the 8600 (codenamed "Luna") looks to be Nokia's newest piece of high-end envy, likely slotting in just below the 8800 Sirocco to satisfy the needs of the "I can't quite afford a Vertu" set. Carphone Warehouse's preorder site confirms that it'll have a 2 megapixel camera, 128MB of onboard storage, media player with integrated FM radio, A2DP, and a quadband GSM radio -- refreshing to see after North America got slighted with the Sirocco's tri-band internals. Depending on the selected O2 plan, prices range from zilch all the way up to £299.99 (about $596). For a phone this attractive, we're really liking the sound of "free."

  • Nokia 8600 "Luna" gets some details

It gets scooped, scooped, and scooped yet again, but we still don't have official confirmation from Nokia that this thing even exists. Still, it's pretty undeniable that this point that the 8600 is the real deal, and Mobile-review has a pretty official-looking pic now to prove it (not to say the prior in-the-wild shots weren't enough). Oh, and some critical details, too: we can apparently expect Series 40 (what else), a 2 megapixel cam, QVGA resolution on the display, and -- disappointingly -- quadband GSM topping out with EDGE data. With what appears to be a press shot floating around the 'nets, it can't be long now before we hear something official.[Via Unwired View]

  • Nokia 8600 "Luna" in the wild

    04.29.2007

Nokia can position this thing as a lower-end sibling to the 8800 if they so choose, but we've gotta be honest, this thing is shaping up nicely -- as in, "we'd rather have this one" nicely. These here are the first live shots we've spied of the rumored 8600 "Luna," a slider with a trick translucent cover and a shape that roughly mimics the older (and allegedly more expensive) 8800. For one thing, having S40 on here in its very latest incarnation is a huge boost to its lust factor, and the huge display doesn't hurt either. Let's hope the Carphone Warehouse has its wits about it and it really will be launching before too long, shall we?[Via Just Another Mobile Phone Blog]

  • Nokia 8600 "Luna" earns FCC wings

    by

    04.22.2007

Nokia's generally pretty good about making sure it breaks the news on new handsets before the FCC does. Not Apple good, but still good. Imagine our surprise, then, to find that the rumored 8600 "Luna" has managed to make its way through the FCC gauntlet this week. It's not enough, apparently, that retailers are already trumpeting its existence -- no, even the FCC is going to break the cover on this one before Nokia does. Hey, whatever, that's cool with us. Not much here to look at, but we can confirm that the phone offers up both GSM 850 and 1900 plus EDGE, offering a level of US compatibility that its flashier big sib, the 8800 Sirocco, has failed to do. Still no word on a release, but we're going to go ahead and set up a tent outside our friendly local flagship store in (excessive) anticipation.
