  • BMW will drop its Apple CarPlay fees (updated)

For years BMW has charged customers for access to Apple CarPlay. Initially, the automaker charged a $300 lifetime fee, but this summer, it introduced a yearly subscription model at $80 per year. That didn't go over well with drivers, especially because Apple doesn't charge car manufactures a fee to use CarPlay. Now, BMW says it will no longer charge a subscription fee for cars equipped with Apple Car Play in the US.

Toyota makes CarPlay and Alexa standard in the 2020 Prius

Toyota has revealed Apple CarPlay will come as standard in all of its 2020 Prius models, along with Alexa and its Safety Connect system. Back in May, Toyota said the plug-in Prius Prime would include CarPlay and Alexa in the 2020 model, but it's expanding availability across the board. Drivers who've been hoping for better connectivity in the Prius will surely welcome CarPlay and Alexa, though it seems Android Auto isn't on the cards just yet.

Apple CarPlay redesign puts multiple apps side-by-side

Apple CarPlay is getting a redesign. Apple announced at its annual Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) that it is overhauling the in-car entertainment system's dashboard to display more relevant information. Users will be able to see a map with directions, music controls, and Siri-powered smart suggestions for relevant apps and commands based on your location or time of day.

A BMW outage made Apple CarPlay unusable

BMW owners in both the US and UK have been locked out of Apple's CarPlay interface on their vehicles due to system-wide outages of ConnectedDrive. 9to5Mac reported that complaints from drivers on both sides of the pond began racking up on social media earlier this week. The German car company's subscription-based connectivity service lets drivers to connect to Apple's CarPlay, which manages everything from navigation to phone calls. With ConnectedDrive being down, cars are unable to confirm that drivers have paid for the CarPlay options in their vehicle.

Toyota brings Alexa and CarPlay to 2018 Camry and Sienna

Good news: you don't have to buy a brand new Toyota (or score a very lightly used model) just to get modern mobile conveniences. The automaker has announced that you can add Amazon Alexa and Apple CarPlay (sorry, no Android Auto) to the 2018 Camry and Sienna. If you're itching for an upgrade, you can book an appointment for an installation at a dealership. While this isn't going to be much consolation if you're driving another model, this could prove a treat if you've been kicking yourself for buying a Toyota a little too soon.

  • Apple CarPlay will also control your vehicle's apps

Apple's in-car operating system, CarPlay, is about to get a major boost. The company has announced at WWDC 2015 that it will soon let you control additional parts of your vehicle, directly from the iPhone-powered software. This means CarPlay can work together with apps created by manufacturers, making it easier for them to integrate their auto features with the service. As a result, you should expect to see other useful tools in CarPlay mode -- like monitoring fuel efficiency and more, similar to what's on the Watch. On stage, Apple CEO Tim Cook also highlighted CarPlay's ability to pair with infotainments wirelessly, which was introduced in iOS 8.3.

  • 2016 Chevrolet Volt features CarPlay support, better range

TUAW has previous published lists of car manufacturers that are building support for Apple CarPlay into new vehicles, but now The Verge reports seeing the 2016 Chevrolet Volt on the floor at this week's North American International Auto Show in Detroit and can verify that the plug-in hybrid will come with CarPlay capabilities. While many car manufacturers are choosing to add support for both CarPlay and rival Android Auto in new vehicles, The Verge noticed that Android Auto was missing from the Volt's display ... although the vehicle won't ship until this summer and it could very well be added later. MirrorLink, a car/smartphone link standard that started as a research project by Nokia, is also supported by the Volt and a number of other cars. In case you're wondering, the revised Volt will be able to get about a thousand miles of range in normal city driving provided it is "topped off" with a nightly charge. Of course, there's an app to tell you your charge level, gas tank level, range and even let you start the car remotely.

  • Apple CarPlay comes to Pioneer stereos as Spotify adds support

Apple's fledgling CarPlay infotainment system just got a little more useful thanks to updates from Pioneer and Spotify. The former has updated some of its stereos to include support from today, while the latest version of the popular music streaming app adds CarPlay functions for the first time. This means users can control the app through supported systems. Spotify was listed as one of very few app launch partners for CarPlay, and was included in a demo we checked out back in March. Similar services like Beats Music, iHeartRadio and Stitcher have also pledged to support the system. Virtually every major manufacturer has promised to include CarPlay in their vehicles at some point, although at the moment your only options are to buy a Ferrari FF or an aftermarket unit from Pioneer.

  • Hyundai's bringing Apple's CarPlay to some new Sonata models

It's becoming a trend to see more and more companies integrate their products with Apple's CarPlay, whether it be car manufacturers or makers of in-dash systems. The latest to join the movement is Hyundai, announcing that navigation-equipped 2015 Sonata models will feature the recently unveiled in-car infotainment system from Apple. Hyundai says that adopting CarPlay was an easy decision for its engineers, since it provides an interface that's already familiar to iPhone users and takes advantage of the new Sonata's 8-inch touchscreen. More importantly, Hyundai's plan to feature CarPlay makes it one of the more cost-effective brands to do so -- and that's a great thing, because not everyone can afford a Merdeces or a Ferrari.
