The gang over at Notebook Check just got their hands on that Clevo M980NU we've had our eyes on for a couple months now. A desktop replacement clearly aimed at the gaming set (what else could all those blue LEDs possibly mean?), this guy rocks the new nVidia Geforce GTX 280M GPU which, combined with its 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme processor, gets called out for its "first-class performance in virtually all fields of application." The 18.4-inch display is no slouch either: with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a max contrast of 595:1, this guy offers "much bigger color space" than most notebooks, although the reviewer points out that you'd see better performance from an RGB-LED panel display such as the Dell Studio XPS 16. But don't take our word for it -- to check out the comprehensive, earth-shattering review hit that read link.

  • Core i7-packin' Clevo D900F gaming laptop hands-off

We're not sure if Clevo has had to deal with trade show thievery in the past, but its Core i7-equipped D900F was locked down tight at CeBIT. Nevertheless, we stopped by -- camera in hand -- to have a look, and what we saw was something we'd never, ever want on our laps for more than 120 seconds. We also saw a ridiculously potent LAN party rig, so we suppose there's some truth to that "eye of the beholder" thing our parents keep mentioning. All the big pics are just below, but you already knew that, didn't you? %Gallery-46471%

Remember all those Clevo laptops revealed last month? While we're expecting more information at CeBIT 2009, those crazy Canadians at Eurocom have gone ahead and spilled the beans on the 17-inch D900F. As conjectured, the 11.9-pound behemoth's packing an equally-mighty Intel Core i7 processor in 2.66, 2.93 and 3.2GHz varieties. It's also got three 500GB hard drives totaling 1.5TB of space, 8GB DDR3 RAM, an NVIDIA G280 GPU, and a Blu-ray burner. Launch date is May 1, although according to Notebook Reviews we shouldn't expect to get our hands on it until Q4 2009. No word on pricing, but we suspect this powerhouse is gonna burn a giant hole in our pockets from both the inside and out.[Via Notebook Reviews]

  • Clevo laptop shocker! Scores of new, cryptic model names

We got a good look at the M98xNU a few days ago, and now it seems that one of those crazy kids over at the Notebook Review forums has dropped the dime on some other new Clevo notebook models we might be seeing at CeBIT 2009. Most notably, he names the predecessor to the company's D901C laptop: the D90xF will offer a 17-inch screen (up to 1920 x 1200), and it may be Core i7, though this is not certain (sometimes desktop chips end up in high-end laptops, so it wouldn't be unheard of). Also in this batch are several touchscreen tablets, including the 7-inch TN70xM with an Atom Z series processor and passive cooling, the 8.9-inch T89xM with "rugged" design, and the TN12xT, a 12.1-inch based on the Montevina platform with Intel's GM45 chipset. Additionally, we can look forward to the second quarter of 2009 for the launch of the 10.2-inch M71xL, the 10.1-inch M81xL and the 13.3-inch R13xT. And if that weren't enough, early next year should see the release of the company's widescreen W76x series of laptops with 15.6-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio displays. Not that you'll necessarily see the Clevo name on many of these -- the company is known primarily as an OEM. Still, this is an interesting peek into next year's possible Alienware, Voodoo and Sager machines. And you know what? There's plenty more where that came from -- hit the read link for all the glorious details.

  • Clevo's 18.4-inch M98xNU gaming laptop packs a lot of junk in its trunk

You'd think with an 18.4-inch panel, the engineers at Clevo could figure out a way to stretch the components within the case into a more horizontal orientation. Instead, this beast is as thick as ever (at least, it sure looks that way), but we suppose you need a good bit of breathing room when tucking a quad-core Intel processor, twin NVIDIA 9800M GTX GPUs and gigabytes upon gigabytes of RAM within a "portable" enclosure. Word on the street has it that the machine -- which also features a 1080p panel as well as a hybrid graphics system for times when hardcore frames-per-second pushing isn't necessary -- will be officially unveiled next March at CeBIT. Our initial thought is "wow, that's a long ways off," but maybe that'll give the size some time to grow on us.[Via NotebookReview, thanks Vinícius]

  • Cizmo's CX1730M gaming laptop packs a wallop

Okay, so maybe Cizmo's CX1730M is based heavily on Clevo's M570TU, but it's still one beast of a machine. This 17-inch monster packs a 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 160GB SATA hard drive, WSXGA+ panel, a 2-megapixel webcam, dual-layer DVD burner (or optional Blu-ray drive), NVIDIA's 512MB GeForce 8800M GTX and a plethora of ports. Amazingly, this one tips the scales at "just" 8.7-pounds, which actually isn't half bad for a unit this potent. Additionally, it looks as if you can order this puppy in a variety of hues -- including the above pictured camouflage -- right now starting at €1,427 ($2,249).[Via NotebookItalia]

  • Hands on Clevo's OEM-ready 15- and 17-inch gaming rigs

You may not know who Clevo is but rest assured your brand-named laptop vendors like Alienware, Voodoo, Hypersonic, and Sager surely do. The Taiwanese OEM just unleashed its new 17-inch pixel M570TU (pictured) and 15-inch M860TU rigs offering WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolutions right here at CeBIT. The 17-incher features Intel's "new generation" processor and chipset, 512MB of nVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX graphics, a 2 megapixel webcam, Blu-ray (or HD DVD drive too for suckers), TV Tuner, TPM, fingerprint reader, and e-SATA and HDMI ports around back. The 15-inch offers pretty much same as its bigger, 17-inch bro only without the TV tuner and Blu-ray disc drive. The M860TU does offer HSDPA connectivity though which is fair trade-off in our opinion.%Gallery-17717%[Thanks, bhattsan and Charles]

  • Eurocom kicks out a quad-core laptop, the Phantom D900C

We've definitely seen some shady reports of a quad-core laptop make the rounds, and it looks like geographically misnamed Canadian laptop outfit Eurocom is going to be first off the line with a Intel Core 2 Quad notebook. A Eurocom spokesperson apparently confirmed to Laptoping that the company is prepping a quad-core Phantom D900C -- which probably means that monster-laptop Clevo (or whichever company is their ODM) is working on a quad-core D900C, since the Phantom is yet another rebrand. Laptoping says the 17-inch machine will feature a 2.4GHz Q6600 "Kentsfield" Core 2 Quad and dual SLI-capable GeForce Go 8700 or Quadro FX3500 graphics, an HD DVD drive, and up to three drives that can be run as a RAID 0/1/5 array -- all of which means battery life on this 11.9-pound monster will probably run down faster than a 6-minute mile. Still, the idea of stuffing four cores into a laptop gets us all excited, but the current $3,200 pricetag on the dual-core Phantom doesn't bode too well for the double the power.

We shouldn't all act surprised that Clevo of all companies is cranking out yet another desktop replacement that would likely burn through even the thickest jeans (and potent batteries) in no time flat, but the firm's 901C ups the ante over the previous rendition with a few notable hardware bumps. Coming just months after the already wicked 900C, this sucka includes your choice of Intel's Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Duo Extreme X6800 processors, a 17.1-inch WXGA / WSXGA+ display, up to 2GB of DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA's 512MB GeForce Go 7950GTX or the 8700M GT, room for a trio of SATA II drives hooked up in RAID, a full size keyboard with numeric pad, 12-cell battery, digital audio out, built-in microphone, four integrated speakers, and a seven-in-one card reader. Furthermore, you'll find ports for FireWire, USB 2.0, S-Video / VGA / DVI, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, 802.11n WiFi, an integrated webcam, 56k modem, and a TV tuner to boot. Apparently, there's no word just yet surrounding price or availability, but we wouldn't count on this powerful 11.9-pounder to run you cheap.[Thanks, Bazald]

Clevo, original source for many hundreds of OEM laptops, has just announced a model that's sure to be a hit among the rebadging crowd, as it offers a pretty compelling feature set in a sub-four-pound package. Besides being the first notebook to sport SiS' new SiSM671 "high performance" Northbridge chipset, the 12.1-inch M721S/M720S also offers a choice of Core 2 Duo processors, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, and sweetest of all, a built in 3G modem for UMTS / HSDPA action. Price and release remain a mystery (still no mention of this one on the Clevo site), but even if you miss it the first time around, you can rest assured that it will show up in countless other branded iterations.[Via Laptop Logic]

  • CompAmerica's new 'most powerful laptop on Earth,' the Orca Extreme

    04.02.2007

With the way CompAmerica goes around bragging about the superiority of its laptops, you'd think that the company was some high end, boutique gaming manufacturer -- instead of one of the many companies simply offering rebadge after rebadge. Just like other 'bigger than life' players such as Eurocom and Rock, ol' CA makes most of its loot selling machines originally available from Clevo, so it should be no surprise that its latest 'most powerful laptop on Earth' -- the 17-inch Orca Extreme -- is really just that D900C we saw last month. You know, Core 2 Extreme CPU, dual GeForce 7950 GTX cards in SLI, up to 4GB of RAM, and of course those three hard drives that can offer up to 600GB of storage in RAID 0. This whale of a laptop can be yours immediately -- that is, if you don't already own one of its doppelgangers -- starting right around $2,600.[Via laptoping]

  • Clevo strikes again with NVIDIA 8800-based M570RU 17-inch laptop

    03.20.2007

If that 11.9-pound monstrosity, Clevo's D900C, is just a bit too much laptop for you, there's always second best: the 17-inch M570RU. Clevo hasn't stripped everything out of this guy, there's still the NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800 graphics, room for 4GB of RAM and even the addition of Intel's latest wireless chipset for 802.11n MIMO WiFi. The screen has been pared down to a 1280 x 800 resolution, but where the M570RU really differs from its big brother is that it's running a traditional mobile version of the Core 2 Duo processor, instead of that Core 2 Duo Extreme desktop chip inside the D900C. Other frills include a webcam, subwoofer and fingerprint security, along with a snazzy orange trim. No word on price for this one, but we're guessing that just because it has a mobile processor and weighs a few less pounds, doesn't mean you'll be seeing one of these for less than a couple grand.

Sure, we've all heard those short-lived (or outright absurd) claims of a world's most powerful laptop, and the term "desktop replacement" has been around the block a few too many times, but a Taiwanese manufacturer is doing the not-so-unthinkable yet again. The Clevo D900c (which could likely be rebadged as a Sager 9260 and / or Pro-Star 9191D) is a 17-inch monster that packs quite a wallop under the presumably toasty hood, including an option for Intel's Core 2 Duo processors, dual 1GB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800 graphics cards, up to 4GB of RAM, up to three hard drives in a RAID 0/1/5 array, 7.1-channel audio, built-in stereo speakers, the ability to house dual optical drives, integrated TV tuner, 1.3-megapixel webcam, and a flash card reader to boot. You'll also find a smorgasbord of ports and connectivity options, including WiFi, Bluetooth, FireWire, 56k modem, USB 2.0, and DVI / S-video outputs. Of course, with horsepower like this, we highly doubt the 12-cell Li-ion will last much over an hour (if that) under full strain, but we're fairly certain you won't be using this 11.9-pound beast solely on your lap much at all. We know you're wondering, so if you've been eying a mobile gaming rig and have around $2,700 (or much more for the juiced version) laying around, you can snag one sometime in the April / May timeframe.[Via NotebookReview, thanks Andrew]
