Gold iPhone 5S poses with current model in leaked group shot (updated with more shots, dual-LED flash?)
Yes, new rumors about iPhone colors seem to come along every day now. But these images from Weekly Ascii in Japan show an intriguing look at the champagne version of the alleged iPhone 5S model allegedly coming September 10, next to black and white iPhone 5 models... allegedly, of course. If real, they match up with previous images, while also showing a bit more refinement in the design and quality. The new color would be far from the blingy gold we saw before, though, perhaps ruining the dreams of the Chanel-bag-and-small-dog crowd. Grab your salt shaker and check after the break for another shot, or hit the source to see them all. Update: Yet more photos have surfaced, this time over at App Advice. The site's got some close-up shots to share with the world, offering a better look at that gold option and, if you look close enough, evidence of that once-spotted dual-LED flash. A slightly expanded hole now resides next to the camera lens, likely making space for a pair of LEDs on the incoming iPhone refresh. Scrutinize for yourself right after the break.
Steve Dent08.22.2013DualShock 4 available in Magma Red, Wave Blue on November 29 in Europe
Seemingly determined to prove that the DualShock 4's light bar isn't the only thing capable of changing colors, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. revealed in a press release today that the DualShock 4 will be available in Magma Red and Wave Blue "concurrently with the launch of PS4 in Europe." The color variations are listed as €59 (£54) for Europe and $59 in North America. Both colors will launch in North and Latin America "later this year."
Thomas Schulenberg08.20.20133DS XL goes black in time for Dream Team
Nintendo's handheld has found its little black dress, which should slim down its XL size. The portable's latest color was officially announced as coming to North America on August 11, alongside Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The new skin popped up in a couple of adverts last week. According to the House of Mario's site, the handheld sits at the standard 3DS XL pricepoint of $200.
Sinan Kubba07.30.2013Wii U white 32GB Premium set announced for Japan
Nintendo is shaking up its color-coded Wii U system by introducing a white 32GB Premium set to Japan. Starting July 13, the Premium set will be available in both black and white in the country. The new set is priced the same as the original black one at ¥31,500 (around $313), and comes with the same accessories. Going by Nintendo's promotion on its site, the GamePad, its stylus, and the console stand are white in the new set, while the GamePad cradle and GamePad stand remain black. When approached about the white 32GB set, a Nintendo spokesperson told us "this is a Japanese announcement," and that "all other territories will make announcements if relevant." Nintendo also unveiled an enhanced GamePad battery replacement today, which is coming to Japan on July 25, while a new fast-charging Wiimote pack arrives alongside the white Premium set on July 13. Altogether more colorful than the Wii U variants, albeit in different shades of green, is the Luigi-themed 3DS XL. The polka-plumber skin unveiled last month is also dated for Japan, and will pipe up on retail shelves on July 18.
Sinan Kubba05.30.2013Samsung announces Galaxy S 4 sales of 10 million, new colors coming this summer (video)
Just as CEO JK Shin predicted, Samsung has announced its new Galaxy S 4 topped 10 million units sold in record time. That beats the 50 days it took the Galaxy S III to sell that many, a mark it took 5 months for the Galaxy S II to pass and 7 months for the original Galaxy S. Samsung has been able to crank up production and speed up worldwide rollouts for its increasingly popular flagship models, contributing to the rapidly increasing pace of sales. To help keep the sales channels flowing, Samsung also announced a few new colors on the way. Joining the existing White Mist and Black Forest models this summer are Blue Arctic and Red Aurora, followed later by Purple Mirage and Brown Autumn editions. Of course, the model many will covet is the one with stock Android announced at Google I/O, but that may depend on whether you want your customizations inside or outside.
Richard Lawler05.22.2013Daily iPhone App: Blendoku has you lining up colors to match
Blendoku is based on a crazy idea, made even crazier by the fact that it works. I am just plain terrible at colors. When I was working retail, I spent an entire day learning to lay out merchandise according to color. I was so bad at it, the trainer sent me right back to customer service. That's the very skill set that Blendoku tests, yet I still enjoy playing it. You're presented with several different colors which must be sorted by shade, lightness or various other qualities. Some levels are simple, with just a strip of various colors going back and forth, but some are very complicated, with multiple colors mixing up in different ways. The game works well. Moving the colors around is intuitive, and the fun, simple aesthetic allows you to focus on the puzzle. Blendoku was a surprise. If someone asked me if I'd like a game about lining up color combinations, I don't think I would have said yes. But this is a fun one, and it might give you a new look on how various visual colors go together (needless to say, you probably can't be color blind and play this). The game is free, with a few in-app purchases to help you solve puzzles or get rid of the ads.
Mike Schramm05.21.2013Visualized: The Jolla phone's 'other half' kaleidoscope
Following some important pricing details, preorder launches and some concrete hardware specs, we've just got to play with the new Jolla phone. Sure, we've already toyed with the software, but today's event is all about the new physical home for the Sailfish OS. It could be a difficult sell in the cutthroat world of smartphones, there's certainly something compelling in Jolla's split design and all those of color options, regardless of what functionality they might add in the future. %Gallery-188868%
Mat Smith05.20.2013Metallic Red 3DS, Eevee 3DS XL evolving in Japan
In Japan-always-seems-to-have-the-coolest-3DS-skins news, the country's getting a new Metallic Red 3DS as well as - and we admit we're particularly jealous of this one - a very limited edition 3DS XL skin based on Eevee, the adorable critter from the Pokémon series. The striped 3DS XL, which rather resembles 1960s wallpaper, was spotted by Hachima being advertized in one of Japan's official Pokémon Center stores. Like last year's Charizard 3DS XL, the ¥18,900 system ($185) is only available via reservations, which then go into a lottery to win the chance to buy the system. In other words, this is one of those times when the words 'limited edition' genuinely apply. The lottery is being held until June 3. More freely available is the Metallic Red 3DS below, which will be released for ¥15,000 ($147) on June 13. Like the Light Blue and Gloss Pink models announced earlier this year, it includes a 4GB SD card.
Sinan Kubba05.15.2013Pentax K-30 DSLR adds 15 new color options, gets both matte and gloss finishes
You might recall the weather-sealed delights of Pentax's K-30, but if you don't, perhaps a new palette of colors will leave a more permanent impression. The 16.3-megapixel DSLR can now be picked up in 15 new finishes, split between gloss and matte, and includes Bordeaux (that'll be deep red), White, Orange, Yellow, Green, Silver and Blue colors. However, it's still not the most customization options Pentax has offered. The K-30 has a long way to go if it wants to best the 100 variants of its mirrorless sibling, the Q10. Each one retails for $800, but to get the full catalog, you'll have to pass the digital doors of Pentax's online store.
Mat Smith04.02.2013Mint white 3DS XL freshens Japan in April, Pikachu 3DS XL appears in US ad
In more pretty-3DS-variant-not-headed-here news, Nintendo revealed a new mint and white skin for the 3DS XL in Japan, priced ¥18,900 ($197) headed for the country on April 18. The new color also gets its own spotted variant in a bundle with the 3DS sequel to the popular Mii collecting sim Tomodachi Collection, priced ¥22,800 ($237).In pretty-3DS-variant-maybe-headed-here news, the absurdly adorable Pikachu 3DS XL could finally be coming over here after all. GoNintendo's NintenDaan spotted the yellow beauty in this very American commercial for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity - Nintendo has yet to announce any plans to bring the Pikachu console to North America.
Sinan Kubba03.12.20133DS Light Blue, Gloss Pink models announced for Japan
Boys and girls in Japan can look forward to new Light Blue (above) and Gloss Pink (below the break) variants of the 3DS, which are sure to do no harm to the ever-growing sales figures in the country. The brightly colored handhelds come with 4GB SD cards rather than the typical 2GB, and will be released on March 20 for ¥15,000 (around $163). There's no word as yet on the models heading westwards. The new color choices do seem a bit gendered, but, as British quiz show QI revealed, up until the 20th century pink was the traditional color for boys, and blue for girls. So if they do come here and you're a boy who fancies the Gloss Pink model or a girl the Light blue, just remember that in the 19th century you'd have been in concurring company - but since the consoles are only confirmed for Japan, this is all hypothetical babble anyway. Oh well.
Sinan Kubba02.27.2013PS3 250GB Slim illuminating Japan in Garnet Red, Azurite Blue
The PS3 is primping it up in Japan with newly unveiled Garnet Red and Azurite Blue colors, The flashy glazes for the 250GB Slim come with a matching DualShock 3 controller, and are available from February 28 at ¥24,980 ($279).The colors also cropped up in Europe on across the weekend via Amazon.de, the listings for 500GB consoles with 2 DualShock 3 controllers, priced at €329.95 ($439). There's been no word on these colors coming to North America as yet.Since you asked, azurite is a type of copper carbonate which traces its name to the Persian word 'lazhward.' Garnet, of course, traces its name all the way back to Final Fantasy 9.
Sinan Kubba01.21.2013Samsung flaunts amber brown, ruby wine Galaxy Note IIs to pair with your drapes
Were you hoping to get that Galaxy Note II in a cooler color than marble or titanium gray, like maybe hotrod red? Would you settle for "amber brown" or "ruby wine," to perhaps match that chaise lounge? That's good, because Samsung has decided to out the 5.5-inch phablet in those trendily specific colors on January 17th, in Korea at least -- though given the five million plus units sold so far, it's earned the right to tint the Note II however it wants. The new hues will blanket the front, back and S-Pen of the device, but we're not sure if we're fashion-forward enough to rock "ruby wine" -- especially on a loud & proud handset like that.
Steve Dent01.17.2013Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, triggers monolithic memories (update: fake!)
Samsung gave Galaxy S III buyers a small rainbow of color choices in the summer, and there's signs that the Galaxy Note II might receive a similarly resplendent treatment. A supposed press image obtained by AndroidSlash shows the giant smartphone draped in a previously unavailable black that's potentially very striking -- and more than a little reminiscent of 2001's species-changing monoliths. There's no official word from Samsung on its authenticity, although we wouldn't be surprised knowing the company's history and the Note II's strong track record. When a theoretically niche device is selling like gangbusters, some added diversity could be in order. Just don't expect any Starchildren as a result. Update: Alas, this is indeed a fake. The source has updated to confirm that this was just a quick darkening job with an image editor -- you can tell by the darkened LED flash, camera and logo. But still, we wouldn't be surprised if Samsung does release its phablet in other colors to keep milking it.
Jon Fingas12.28.2012The Daily Grind: How much time and effort do you spend on your character's appearance?
Guild Wars 2 has an interesting way of handling dyes, with a pool of colors that you can alter at any time that propagates to all of your present and future equipment. It also makes me stop dead in the middle of my leveling and spend about an hour trying out color combinations and then start over when I got a new chestpiece and a nice new pale green dye -- something that I will no doubt do all over again as soon as I replace the existing chestpiece. This isn't unusual. I spend a lot of money in Guild Wars on dyes and mixing them for just the right look. I've spent huge chunks of time in Star Wars: The Old Republic hunting for just the right modifiable pieces of armor. These are times spent looking for things that look the way I want, not actually spent playing the game or improving my character in any other way. But what about you? How much time and effort do you spend on your character's appearance? Is it a major part of the game for you, or just something that you barely consider? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!
Eliot Lefebvre11.17.2012Verizon Galaxy S III now available in black and brown
Verizon teased on Monday that black and brown models of Samsung's Galaxy S III would be coming soon, but mum was the word on exactly how quickly that would be. Turns out, it was real fast. The pair of smartphones are now available at the carrier's online storefront with a $199.99 price tag for those who don't mind a two-year commitment with Big Red. If the new shades strike your fancy, hit the source link below to give one (or two) of the devices a new home.
Alexis Santos10.14.2012Verizon teases black and brown Galaxy S III models for the subtle crowd
AT&T might have nabbed Verizon's color for the Galaxy S III, but that doesn't mean Big Red subscribers will be left out. The CDMA carrier has just posted a rotating teaser on its home page promising the low-key black and brown versions of Samsung's flagship sometime "soon," with availability sign-ups on hand for the impatient. That's all we know for now, although history suggests there won't be a premium over the $200 contract price of the existing blue and white models. We're hoping the new shades of Galaxy come soon -- Verizon's offering will be the first chance most Americans have to get the Android phone in muted colors and relive the glory days of brown electronics.
Jon Fingas10.08.2012Sony PlayStation Vita Sapphire Blue hands-on (video)
After breaking from cover at yesterday's pre-TGS presser, the two new PlayStation Vita color variants have gotten cozy at the Sony booth on the show floor. Unlike the quick photo opp that we snagged a few hours ago, we were able to actually fondle the "sapphire blue" model in all its metallic-hued glory. Speaking of shiny exteriors, both the blue and red schemes feature a bit of sparkle along with the slathering of new paint. The duo look quite glittery, giving the two some added flair over the regular ol' black and white versions in addition to the color change. The hardware is the same as the existing models and the key difference is strictly visual. As you can see in the gallery below, the backsides of these Vitas is also covered with the same shimmering color as their facades. The pair will arrive in Japan in November and we're keeping a close watch on availability elsewhere.
Billy Steele09.19.2012Sony's PlayStation Vita gets a blue and red-hued makeover, we take a closer look (eyes-on)
After the new PS3s had their moment in the spotlight at Sony's pre-TGS press event, the company also announced color variants for the PS Vita. We weren't able to fondle the pair just yet, the key difference is quite obvious: "cosmic red" and "sapphire blue" exteriors. Both of the new models share the same glossy coating as the original model, so they're sure to attract your fingerprints. These two round out the paint schemes at four when you include the "crystal white" version that's already been unveiled. While we snag a spot in line for a hands-on at the Sony booth, take a peek at the gallery that follows for a quick look at the duo.%Gallery-165877%
Billy Steele09.19.2012Jawbone takes a cue from Colorware, will let customers order the Jambox speaker in custom colors
Want a blue-and-black Bluetooth speaker to match your Engadget t-shirt, messenger bag and whatever other paraphernalia you have lying around? You're in luck: Jawbone is about to start accepting orders for the Jambox speaker in custom colors. All told, you'll be able to choose from 13 shades for the grill, and nine for the end caps. Jawbone says it can see customers choosing school and team colors, not that you need an excuse to want an orange piece of kit. The personalization is free of charge, meaning the price of the speaker is still $200. The only downside, so far as we can tell, is that the Big Jambox isn't included. For now, the site is only open to select users (i.e., loyal customers who have participated in company forums, surveys and such), but starting August 28th it'll be open to everybody. In the meantime, which of you has the cojones to order it in purple and yellow?%Gallery-162979%
