Like the proverbial Model T, the PlayStation 5 will launch in any color you like, as long as it’s white. If that doesn’t match your decor or taste, a company called PlateStation has unveiled a series of third-party colored plates to make your console look a little different.

Imagine if, rather than buy your favorite shoes in blue or red, you could buy one pair of shoes and change the color depending on how you feel each day. Maybe you'd decide to add multicolored flames or zebra print. A new, reprogrammable ink might let you do just that. PhotoChromeleon Ink, developed by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), can change the color or pattern of an object when exposed to UV light.

As rumored, Snap has unveiled a new set of Spectacles with new colors and better specs that address user complaints with the first model. To better aid in their spring break beach appeal, the new models are finally water resistant, for one thing. With new electronics, they're also lighter and more sleek while offering better resolution for both photos and video. You can also get them in three colors (Ruby, Onyx and Sapphire) that are a bit more exciting than the Teal, Coral and Black of the last model.

Adobe’s 'Playful Palette' makes color mixing artist-friendly

Artists work with real paint by mixing groups of colors on a palette, making for natural blending and color combinations. That's a far cry from Photoshop-type color pickers, which let you grab specific colors but not combine them. Adobe Research has come up with a solution called the "Playful Palette" that gives artists the best of both worlds. It lets you create "blobs" of paint you can blend for gradients and gamuts, while allowing non-destructive edits, infinite history and other digital benefits.

LG's G6 is a nice smartphone that has sold pretty well so far, but with the arrival of Samsung's stellar Galaxy S8, it's trying to keep consumers interested with a few changes and a new model. First off, it has launched the G6+, an identical model to the original but with more onboard memory (128GB) and "premium sound." It gets the latter option via a new 32-bit HiFi quad DAC that has been available in South Korea since launch, but oddly, never came to North America.

Most smartphones are doomed to the scrap heap several years after they're new, because glued and soldered parts make them too pricey to repair. With the modular Fairphone 2 handset, on the other hand, you can replace the screen in a minute without tools, and other modules can be swapped with a screwdriver. In fact, iFixit gave the device a perfect 10 for repairability. The company behind it has refreshed the device, and released its first replaceable component: the cover

Spector captures printed fonts and sends the details to InDesign

When a designer sees typography they like or a color that might be useful for a project, the first move is usually to snap a picture with their phone. I can say that because I'm a designer myself, frequently capturing textures, hues and letterforms for reference later. Royal College of Art MA student Fiona O'Leary came up with a better solution though, one that gets those bits of type and color into a desktop design app even faster. O'Leary built Spector: a small camera that logs typography and palettes before sending them directly to InDesign.

  • Find your pals in a crowd with this flashing phone app

We've likely all been there: you're at a concert or some other crowded public space and maybe it's too loud to talk on the phone or you don't have cell reception to send a text. How're your friends supposed to find you? Well, if you use LookFor, all they'd have to, erm, look for, would be your phone's flashing screen. As you'll see in the video below (or the GIF above) the app relies on fullscreen blinking colors to help you stand out from a gaggle of bystanders. Just hold your device in the air and try not to feel too self-conscious while you do it, and getting together with buddies should be a bit easier. As CNET notes, however, should the $0.99 Android and iOS app gain popularity, the six pre-packaged colors might not be enough to keep you from accidentally converging with the wrong group of people. If that does happen, at least you'll still have another sweet mobile-rave option at your disposal.

  • Another Apple event, still no new black MacBook

I want a black MacBook, you want a black MacBook, we all want black MacBooks, so where is our black MacBook? We got a lot of cool things at yesterday's special event, including an über iMac, a more powerful yet less expensive Mac mini, and of course the new version of OS X you definitely installed overnight. What we didn't get is a darker MacBook. At this point, I fear we may get a gold MacBook before Apple decides to add "Space Grey" -- let's be honest, it's basically black -- to the MacBook lineup. For now, at least, we'll have to keep dreaming. [Photo credits: Admartinator, Francescopozzi, Pedrokid]

If you'd like a smartwatch that'll match the glow sticks at your next rave, then we've got good news for you. Pebble has just announced a Limited Edition run of its original smartwatch in three eye-popping colors: Fly Blue, Fresh Green and Hot Pink. They're decidedly more fun and hip than the classier Steel Pebble released earlier this year, but that's intentional: We're told that this Limited Edition run is specifically targeted at the younger back-to-school crowd. Like the original Pebble watches, all three colors are available for $150 each.

As suspected, a new color variant of the 2DS is launching alongside Tomodachi Life in North America on June 6. The $130 "Sea Green" model should be a fashionable companion for any beach-goer this summer, or any virtual beach-goer in Nintendo's new sim game. The 2DS is the unhinged younger sibling of the 3DS, and plays all 3DS games but in 2D. If Sea Green makes you sea-sick, you can also grab currently available red and blue models for the same price. • This swatch book from 1692 puts modern Pantone guides to shame

We're pretty tricky nowadays with our billions of colors, but Dutch masters weren't exactly chopped liver. As spotted by blogger Erik Kwakkel, a certain "A. Boogert" even created a volume with individually painted watercolor swatches showing nearly every conceivable hue. Housed at the Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence, France, the sheer level of detail in its 800-plus pages is on par with modern Pantone guides. We can imagine how useful that would've been to fledgeling Rembrandts, though we doubt very many actually saw it. Since printing color was a big challenge back then, only a single copy exists, and it likely cost more than a painter's wage to crack it. For a closer look, check the full version at the E-Corpus digital library. Update: Blogger Erik Kwakkel has pointed out that it was him that first espied the ancient Dutch swatch book. The post has been updated to reflect that.

  • Ship painting is coming to EVE Online

    by

    03.06.2014

For some people, the idea of painting the outside of your ship in EVE Online is pointlessly frivolous. For others, it's the cue to immediately get out some swatches and start talking about how nice a battlecruiser would look in hot pink and safety orange. The bad news for players in the latter camp is that those aren't available colors, but an early test version of ship painting will be introduced with the game's next major patch. Nine total paint schemes are being introduced: eight available for Aurum and one available via in-game acievements. This is an intentionally narrow field, as the developers want to see what kind of player interest exists and whether or not having custom-painted ships will affect play patterns. For more details on exactly how you can space-pimp your space-ride, take a look at the full rundown on the pilot program. And be sure to ask for that pink-and-orange number with the next wave.

  • Samsung adds red and 'rose gold' colors to its Galaxy Note 3 lineup

    12.02.2013

Smartphones these days are as much fashion accessories as pure gadgets and Galaxy Note 3 fans will soon have two more ways to mix and match. First off, Samsung went straight for a trendy "rose gold" hue for the handset's metal edge against a black or white body color, giving it a blingy Chanel vibe. Also on tap is a "merlot red" so that exhibitionist types will have something more outré to lust after than the current jet black, classic white and blush rose finishes. The new shades will be launched in China later this month, with other regions getting them as per "market preference," according to Samsung. We're not sure what that means exactly, because the market usually prefers things yesterday.

If it hasn't achieved it already, the 3DS XL is making a serious bid to become the gaming system with the most assorted liveries in the history of ever and ever. With all other colors utilized, Nintendo is bringing orange and turquoise variants to Japan on November 28. Or to be more specific, "orange and black" and "turquoise and black" variants since they're "and black" on the inside. Both units are priced ¥19,900 (around $205) and come with a 4GB memory card, a black drawstring carrying pouch, and an AC adapter. As ever, these units are limited to Japan for now, but a least North American livery lovers can reportedly look forward to the beautiful Zelda 3DS XL.

  • The Daily Grind: What colors do you wear?

You know what I look at a lot these days? Color combinations. I have an abundance of toddlers in my house, and with toddlers come brightly colored toys, clothes, and kitchenware. I've become fascinated with observing which color combinations are on display, mostly because I bring that newfound knowledge into MMOs when I'm trying to figure out how to dye my outfits. A good color scheme can make or break an outfit. Deep blue and bright yellow is one of my current favorite combos, although I will never say no to black-and-white simplicity. Even brown is kind of cool if paired with pink or a bright green. So for those of you who obsess with getting "just the right look" for your character when you're purchasing dyes, what colors do you end up wearing? What are your favorites? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!
