It's totally fun to browse through the costume gallery or the pictures of the costume contest we took last weekend and marvel at the different costumes that showed up at BlizzCon, but what you don't see in those shots is all of the hard work that went into making each outfit. Sure, there are probably some store-bought purchases in there, but for the most part, each costume was assembled with lots of hard work and care, most of the time by the person actually wearing it.Mariecannabis is the woman wearing this Alexstrasza costume that we saw at the costume contest, and she has posted a gallery over on Flickr showing some of the behind-the-scenes work of making the molds and putting the costume together. The end costume looks great, but the process is all shapes and molds and paint and construction -- fascinating to see how it all comes together. And while this costume is terrific, it does make you wonder about the stories behind some of the even more complex costumes up there.Stay tuned for more -- we'll be seeking out a few of the best costumes we saw at BlizzCon, and we'll show you some more of their stories in the future here on WoW.com. It's fun to see all of those on the show floor, but you sometimes don't realize just how much work and time is actually put into them.%Gallery-70720%%Gallery-70668%

Elizabeth gave you heads up during the BlizzCon 2009 weekend that your intrepid WoW.com staff was keeping an eye on the amazing costumes on your behalf. We were even able to give you a huge gallery of the costume contest taking place, with great pictures as the cosplayers strutted their stuff on stage. Then, we were able to bring you the 2009 costume contest video to make sure you had a good idea of how the costumes looked in live action. We've now updated our costume gallery with tons of extra pictures, with many of them focused on making sure you get to see the amazing detailing these cosplayers put into their outfits. From gloves to weapons, the cosplayers really raised the bar on how to do a "real life" interpretation of in-game gear. Check out the gallery and see it all for yourself.%Gallery-70668%%Gallery-70720%

If there's one thing we can't get enough of, it's World of Warcraft fans in elaborate, just-stepped-out-of-your-computer-screen costumes. (And even though this year's winner took her inspiration from Diablo 3, we can't hold it against her.) And BlizzCon certainly has its fair share of cosplay. But we're not going to waste your time with a bunch of words when there are so many pictures to show off -- enjoy our costume contest gallery, the next best thing to being there yourself. And, on the plus side, you didn't have to fight the crowds for a good seat!%Gallery-70720%BlizzCon 2009 is here! Not at BlizzCon yourself? Don't fear -- while all of us are here fighting with massive queues and the door boss (live in person, above), you can enjoy BlizzCon from the safety of your own computer via the live stream and our own live coverage (glance to the right for our BlizzCon live blog schedule). We expect to see many more costumes over the course of the weekends and we will be certain to keep updating this gallery as we get more screenshots photos. • Latest ASIMO prototype is made of wood, requires one human

Honda may have bestowed plenty of improvements on ASIMO over the years, but it looks like an alumni of rival robot maker Waseda University has taken it upon himself to deliver some improvements of his own that make it even more lifelike, though no doubt just as prone to tumbles. The key, it seems, is to ditch the robotics and high-tech materials altogether and instead use something called "wood," which can be fashioned into a shell (or "costume," if you will) that's able to accommodate one slightly uncomfortable human. Either that, or ASIMO has been robot-napped from Honda and is now being held at an undisclosed location. Check out the video after the break to decide for yourself.

  • Naruto, Tales artists create special costumes for Tekken 6

Tekken 6 continues to expand its repertoire of manga-inspired special costumes. Masashi Kishimoto, creator of Naruto, is collaborating with Namco Bandai by creating an alternate outfit for Lars (seen above). This is the second costume from a famous mangaka for Tekken 6, the first being CLAMP's design for Jin.In addition to Kishimoto's outfit, Tekken 6 will also feature an alternate costume for Zafina designed by Mutsumi Inomata, character designer of Tales of Destiny and Tales of Graces (after the break). While some were afraid these costumes would remain a strictly Japan-only affair, Siliconera reports that all three of the special costumes revealed so far will be available in the US version as well when it launches on October 27th.

OK, we're sure this has been floating around the tubes for a bit, but we're more than happy to devote some attention to the very cool Brotherhood of Steel costume you see above. Made out of awesome and love (probably some foam and paint in there too), the beautiful homage to Fallout 3 was apparently completed back in March. After seeing this, we don't feel so bad about losing that auction for the 7'10" Brotherhood of Steel statue. We'd go to work wearing this costume if we could.[Thanks, Gawk]

  • Michael Jackson honored in Battlefield Heroes, kind of [update: Costumes will be free]

Update: Electronic Arts has contacted us to let us know that the outfits will be free. Multiplayer has updated its own story, noting that the prices mentioned were seen on the Battlefield Heroes test servers. Upon release to the actual public, they will be offered at the consumer-friendly price of no dollars. Original post is below. In a touching display of respect for the recently deceased King of Pop, Electronic Arts has uploaded a pair of the music legend's iconic outfits to Battlefield Heroes -- one for each of the game's two factions. Members of the Royal Army can now drape themselves in the white suit worn by Michael Jackson in the "Smooth Criminal" music video, while National Army recruits can don the black leather apparel featured in "Bad." This is a really neat way for EA to show -- wait a sec, you have to pay for them? You're telling us that EA is charging 420 Battlefunds (about $3) for these outfits? Well, surely, they're donating the money to sick kids or something, right? No? They're just ... keeping it? That's sorta messed up, guys.

  • CLAMP designing costumes for Tekken 6, anime fan girls squee

Tekken 6 continues to get more bizarre. Famed all-female mangaka group CLAMP (known for Cardcaptor Sakura, X/1999, xxxHolic, Code Geass) is designing new costume designs for Namco Bandai's upcoming fighter. Here, we see Jin wearing a wardrobe that would fit perfectly in CLAMP's Tsubasa Chronicle.Obviously, the addition of one of the most popular shoujo groups in Japan is meant to increase Tekken's appeal beyond male gamers. In fact, the high-pitched ringing you may be hearing right now is the sound of thousands of anime fan girls squeeing in unison whilst holding onto Kero-chan plushies.

If you're like us, you like free costumes in LittleBigPlanet -- primarily because it's hard to resist free stuff. Media Molecule's next gratis offering is this "Druid" costume, created to celebrate the summer solstice. As with many of the game's free costumes, this costume will only be available for a week. Europeans will want to hit the PlayStation Store tomorrow (June 18th), while North American PS3 owners will have to wait until next week, June 25th.The long white robe should help -- as noted by Takorii -- create some excellent Assassin's Creed costumes. We'll certainly be using the beard whenever we cross a bridge in the game, screaming "You shall not pass!"

Did you manage to get your tickets? I'm sure there will be plenty of folks who are returning to BlizzCon. I wasn't able to go but I followed WoW Insider's coverage of the event from the opening ceremonies to the final concert. It was an awesome time for fans to get insight on some of the behind the scenes aspects of WoW, including an art gallery, a sound panel, and an introduction to Ghostcrawler.I have to admit that even with the massive amount of information on classes and mechanics, my favorite part was the goofy fan stuff. I love how some people really get into their costumes and dances. I think I missed out most by missing the WoW Insider meet up. It's amazing that real people get so into our favorite game franchises. For those of you who went last year, or even were following along with me, what's the best BlizzCon memory that you carry with you?BlizzCon 2009 is coming up on August 21st and 22nd! We've got all the latest news and information. At BlizzCon you can play the latest games, meet your guildmates, and ask the developers your questions. Plus, there's some great looking costumes.

The face tab, like the body tab, has more than just sliders. The sliders for your face are easily the most detailed, and do change quite a bit. Not that these sliders are useless, just that if you couldn't be bothered with them you really needn't worry about it beyond picking a mood.

The community gathered around Champions Online was recently put to an interesting task: strike your most heroic pose and click a picture. There was beta keys and game related swag up for grabs, so the results are of course pretty entertaining. People not only went to all the trouble of taking a picture of themselves in comically fun heroic poses, but they also dressed for the occasion. Our favorite is probably the character Regnasis, pictured above this post. It's likely this choice has a lot to do with our love of the psychologically challenged detective, Rorschach.Biased childhood heroes aside, all the the images are fun or creative in different ways. In fact, the results are so enjoyable that we hope this isn't the last heroic pose and/or real life costume contest we see for Champions Online -- at least until there's someone willing to mimic Foxbat's sense of style.

  • Replica Portal gun is an absolute triumph

We've seen some Portal-inspired gadgets before, but this one takes the cake, as it were. The Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device is made from florist foam, and wonderflex, among other parts, and uses a 9V battery to power blue and orange LEDs around the nozzle. On the back of the gun is a bit of splattered blood -- y'know, since we're not all quick enough to avoid the turrets. Hit up the read link for more pictures. Can somebody please throw in some Wiimote circuitry so we can use this thing to play the actual game? [Thanks, everyone!] Read - Notes from the creator Read - Hi-res Flickr gallery

Yes, I know this column has been gone a while. Sorry about that. Or wait, actually - it wasn't gone, it was just undercover! That's it! You didn't really think Encrypted Text was just talking about rogues this whole time, did you? Wake up, sheeple! Wrath of the Lich King has been upon us for some time, and with it came zone after zone of prolific questing and fascinating scenery. I'd like to spend the next few weeks talking about some of my favorite quests and items that provide disguises or change your appearance in WotLK. Obviously, there will be spoilers in some of these posts for those of you that haven't done all the quests in Northrend yet; I'll put all such behind a cut, so don't click on if you don't want to know about the content. Let's start out with the Hyldnir of Storm Peaks.

Eidos has given Underworld fans another free costume pack, perfect for playing dress-up with Lara Croft. The 62MB download gives Lara a blue and a red wetsuit to add to her walk-in closet. A previous free costume pack bestowed Lady Croft with her treasured original (Anniversary) outfit and her Legend ensemble. As much as we love putting Lara in new clothes -- pretending she's the Barbie doll dad wouldn't let us have as a kid -- don't think we've forgotten about those Underworld level packs. Pretty clothes might distract us, but the "Beneath the Ashes" mission was originally planned to be out by now.

You might have thought Christmas was over, but not so fast -- there's one more terrible almost undead overlord who wants to wish you a merry one. Yes it's Arthas himself -- reader Adam Beamish sent us these pictures of himself (at least we think it's him -- he made the costume anyway) dressed up as a jolly... well, somewhat jolly old Death Knight, and they are hilarious.Brilliant. The costume is great (even if the idea of Arthas as St. Nick is a little silly), and the pictures, by Brooks Reynolds, are very well done. One question, though: where's the candy cane Frostmourne?

In addition to tomorrow's for-pay Street Fighter outfits, Sony will be gifting LittleBigPlanet fans with the first part of a free, two-piece SackSanta costume for your SackBoys (or SackGirls). Stage one is the Santa suit; the hat and beard will be available on the PlayStation Store (again, for free) the following Thursday, December 18.Like the milk & cookies you leave out for the real Santa, this costume will magically disappear from the PS Store come January 8. We're assuming it won't be replaced with a coal costume.

You may have noticed that the lightsabers in Star Wars: The Old Republic are disproportionately large. A vocal minority of fans are crying bloody murder about this, and BioWare is not unaware of that fact. At a company Halloween party, it would appear that they made a self-deprecating joke of it, with at least one employee showing up with an outrageously huge lightsaber, then staging a recreation of the screenshot that raised all those eyebrows. The image was leaked to gaming blog Kotaku, and here it is. BioWare seems to believe it's good to have a sense of humor about yourself, and we agree!

We talked about Halloween last month, as people were first beginning to think about the holiday, but now that it's past, it's time for us to revisit the topic. Specifically, we have to look at costumes! Gamers always seem so enthusiastic about their costumes, and they're rarely something you can throw together at the last minute with handy items from around the house. If you're feeling particularly rebellious, you can bounce right into the gallery and make your own way around. If not, we've got a guided tour prepared, just for you.%Gallery-35992%
