  • Apogee and Deep Silver want your best Duke impressions

Tired of hearing about Duke Nukem these past couple of weeks? In all honesty, we're becoming a bit weary of writing about him, but we really couldn't pass this one up. Apparently the folks behind the Duke Nukem Trilogy are looking for a few good actors to do their best Duke impressions and maybe get a chance to "travel around the world representing Deep Silver and Apogee Software, LLC as the new 'official' Duke Nukem."We might not have informed you about the contest had the already existing contestant videos not convinced us otherwise. Women playing Duke? Yep. People who speak English only sometimes playing Duke? You bet! Hilarious? In an American Idol blooper, catching some serious wahjah kind of way. If you're so inclined to enter yourself (though we're wary to encourage that), all you have to do is capture your best Duke impressions on tape and head over to the contest website for entry instructions. We're going out on a limb and suggesting you don't impersonate what Duke does to bosses after taking them out in your entry. We'll leave it at that.

  • Deep Silver dares to announce a DJ game

If we happened to be working on a music game about spinning turntables, we would probably delay any press releases or announcements about it for a few months. The DJ game scene is a little ... hostile at the moment, and it seems like a good idea to let some of that business blow over before inviting the ire of two litigious companies. Nevertheless, Deep Silver bravely announced DJ Star for the DS today. The game uses the touch screen to simulate turntables, and includes "40 famous tracks (Electro, R&B, etc.)" The Game Life-developed music game even features a music creation utility! DJ Star is expected out "later this year." Nobody tell Genius or Activision -- or Konami, for that matter.

Deep Silver's long-delayed turn-based strategy effort for PSP is finally coming ... we think. The company released the intro to the upcoming game, and the live action sequence reminds us a lot of the classic Command & Conquer cinematics. This three minute clip emphasizes the importance of resources in the game and sets up the conflict with -- you guessed it -- giant robots.%Gallery-30245%

Apogee's Duke Nukem Trilogy already eclipsed Duke Nukem Forever with its mindblowingly awesome, yet content-free, trailer. But now it has surpassed Forever even more, by existing! And, as if to show off, it's six games. Sort of. As OhGizmo! explains, Duke Nukem Trilogy features three games, which have the same stories, but are presented in a different style on DS than on PSP. The PSP versions are M-rated, with content that will be "tasteful, but it'll still be Duke." The DS versions will be T-rated, and thus toned down a bit in terms of dialogue and gratuitous strippers. The best part? The first game, Duke Nukem: Critical Mass, was actually there! There was a demonstration on both PSP and DS. Try that, Duke Nukem Forever. Try being playable on a game system.

Fat loot aficionados won't be happy to hear that the console debut of Sacred 2: Fallen Angel has been pushed into Q2 2009. Originally, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game were slated to release alongside the PC version, but delays forced developer Ascaron to focus on one platform. Sure, we're upset that our plundering and level grinding will be put on hold, but considering the bumps in the road Sacred 2 hit when it released on PC last November, we wouldn't mind a few extra months of development. What bumps, you ask? Things like game crashes, flip-book style framerates and wacky collision detection that sent players hurling through terrain, into the empty world below. Small stuff, really.

Fresh from the developer oven and cooled just enough for immediate consumption are five new Sacred 2: Fallen Angel screenshots from the Xbox 360 version. There isn't much terribly new to be seen in the screens, but they do focus on both the Temple Guardian and Seraphim characters. What we find most interesting is the Star Wars Wheel Bike inspired Monowheel and the horse screenshot, mainly because we are fans of most all equine. Enjoy the screens. • Cursed Mountain: the winter survival horror game that isn't cancelled!

While everyone's upset about the loss of n-Space's survival horror title Winter, it's fairly comforting to remember that the Wii has another survival horror game about enduring a desolate winter environment on the way, with no discernible signs of trouble so far. In fact, in the space of just two trailers, Cursed Mountain has been upgraded in our estimation from "not bad" to must play. This looks incredibly atmospheric, and just plain technically beautiful! In addition to ghosts, players will apparently have to contend with hallucinations due to the altitude and oxygen deprivation from the harsh Himalayan mountain that serves as the game's backdrop. Which leaves us to wonder whether the creepy dudes in these new screens are real bad guys or not. Either way, yikes.%Gallery-35618%

As you can imagine, two things really stuck with us following our viewing of this latest trailer for Cursed Mountain: how much walking they show the protagonist doing and one enemy with a pointy hat. Sure, there's other good stuff in there, like brief snippets of combat and a variety of locales, but we usually find pleasure in the little things, to tell the truth. So, now that you've seen more of it in motion, what do you all think?%Gallery-35618%

According to N-Europe, who found this in an NGamer magazine (we'd call something this abstracted a rumor if it weren't already hypothetical), Deep Silver may seek to augment the controls for their unique survival horror game Cursed Mountain with MotionPlus. The article describes the motion-based controls in the "prayer gestures" used in the nonviolent combat in a bit more detail. Apparently, "prayer scrolls" will be used along with motion-controlled ritual simulations to banish ghosts from the earth. In addition, players will use motions to climb walls with an icepick, suggesting more context-sensitive motion controls that would probably benefit from MotionPlus. With any luck, then, our controllers will register with near-perfect accuracy the shaking of our fists as we curse a mountain.%Gallery-35618%

We hope it doesn't seem to cynical of us if we say we aren't quite certain these Cursed Mountain screenshots are genuinely captured from the game. For one thing, they are offered on the Cursed Mountain website in a 1280x750 resolution. They also feature graphical effects, like the glow around this ghost, that appear to have been added later. Plus we can tell from some of the pixels. We don't want to disparage Deep Silver for (potential) doctoring of early screenshots, because we'd have to take the same position against every developer, ever. At least what they intend to do with Cursed Mountain -- a survival horror game set in a haunted Tibetan monastery -- is cool and original!%Gallery-35618%[Via Wiiz]

  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky recalled, delayed 'a few days'

We know the news of a brief delay for the much-anticipated prequel to GSC Game World's S.T.A.L.K.E.R. must be disheartening for fans of the title -- however, those same fans will probably be pleased to know of the heartbreak that Clear Sky's delay will ultimately prevent. It seems that publisher Deep Purple Silver recalled copies of the title that had been distributed to North American retailers due to a printing error that left the cases sans CD keys. Apparently, those things are kinda important.Deep Silver explained that the delay would only push the game's North American Sept. 5 release back "a few days" (the European release date is unaffected by the printing snafu), though a few retailers are listing Sept. 15 as the new launch date. We know you're jonesing for some further adventures in Chernobyl, but don't do anything brash. We wouldn't suggest playing laser tag in a poorly maintained nuclear waste repository, for instance.[Via 1UP]

About a week ago, we brought word of a new turn-based strategy game called Mytran Wars. Back then, we didn't know what the game looked like and our speculations regarding the look and feel of the game could've reached the stars. However, there is absolutely no need to stargaze and wonder any longer because we've got some fresh screenshots right here. It looks like the game will utilize a bit of 3D cel-shading. • GC 2008: First footage of Cursed Mountain

You'll have to endure some conference attendee's phone call at the beginning of this off-screen Cursed Mountain footage, but it takes place during the seemingly interminable intro anyway. This video contains the first actual images of Deep Silver's horror title, which, at first, only seems scary because the music and the editing tells you it's supposed to be. It's just a foggy mountain, which isn't really that terrifying unless you're there. But then ghosts arrive, and it's generally accepted that ghosts are scary.Judging by the brief glimpse of an onscreen prompt, QTE-style gestures figure into the combat. Either that is what they meant by motion-controlled combat, or those arrows were on the screen as a tutorial, to help players learn the gestures. There's also a pointer visible on screen, which may just be used for investigating or may also be part of the ghostbusting.

With the sun setting on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. prequel Clear Sky's development, GSC Game World has let us know that it's finally safe to venture outside -- provided you're packing enough firepower to keep the ravenous and irrevocably irradiated hordes at bay. The anticipated FPS is finally dawn done and should be taking us for a first-person stroll through Chernobyl's utterly charming neighborhood on September 5th (yes, that counts as a minor delay). If you're the sort who can tell your GPU from your PPU (doesn't that fit into the SKU?), you should be pleased to note that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky will feature support for both DirectX 9 and DirectX 10 chipsets. You'll be wanting those hideously deformed mutants to look their best when they tear your throat out. Listen up folks, another new game has been announced. This time it's a turn-based strategy game called Mytran Wars. It's exclusive to the PSP and is a creation of Budapest-based devs, Stormregion. These guys are the makers of PC games such as: Rush for Berlin, S.W.I.N.E., and Codename: Panzers. They really love their war games, huh?Mytran Wars is a stark contrast from Stormregion's other works, primarily because the setting is in space and not their usual choice of WWII or the Cold War era. As for the actual story, the long-short of it goes: It's the 23rd century, and humans and aliens are at war over resources. The game will feature a multiplayer mode. No other details were mentioned after that. So a price and date will remain in the far reaches of space for now.[Via press release]

click for concept art gallery Developer slash publisher Deep Silver – the cats working on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky – just announced a new survival horror title being built exclusively for the Wii: Cursed Mountain.Citing a healthy dollop of 1980s charm, Himalayan mountains, cursed souls (of villagers, mountaineers, monks, etc.), and waggle-infused gestures, Deep Silver Managing Director Hannes Seifert says, "Cursed Mountain will deliver a unique, terrifying game play experience" when it's released in 2009. Until then, all we've got are a couple pieces of unique concept art and a terrifying logo. Bon appétit.%Gallery-28791%

  • Cursed Mountain looms over Wii

Deep Silver, co-publisher of the logo-filled Duke Nukem Trilogy, is developing an original survival horror game for Wii called Cursed Mountain. Set in the 1980s, the game follows a climber as he ascends a mountain in a search for his lost brother. Along the way, he finds -- zoinks! Like, ghosts! With its emphasis on ghosts (dead people in limbo) rather than corporeal monsters, Cursed Mountain promises a different kind of violence than the bloody, visceral experience of other survival horror games, according to Deep Silver's Hannes Seifert. "It's violent in the sense of ever present danger and very aggressive environments and enemies. But you can't be violent against ghosts and mountains. So Cursed Mountain is violent, yes, but in a very unorthodox way."How unorthodox? You enter a shadow world, sense enemies with the pointer, and then fight with motions, including a praying gesture.

Being nice to look at is hardly essential for a puzzle game, but that's not to say we're opposed to easy-on-the-eye puzzlers such as World of Goo. Deep Silver's Gravity is another entry in the genre that is also a looker, with each of the title's 100 puzzles featuring a unique, hand-painted background (IGN has bigger screens if you want to admire them some more). As for how it plays, this debut trailer suggests that the Deep Silver team have been spending some time with Crayon Physics, or maybe even DS homebrew hit Pocket Physics. You'll hear no complaints from us if the Wii gets its own Crayon Physics!Trailer at GameTrailersScreens at IGN

  • 1960's bikers 'Ride to Hell'

Unfortunately, we got overzealous hoping that this was a videogame adaptation of Dante's Divine Comedy. While that's certainly not it, the game is, in fact, a title all about 1960's hog riders living the life of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll. Uh, we were pretty close ... somehow. Anyway, titled Ride to Hell, this Deep Silver-published game allows players to "immerse themselves in the liberty and freedom of riding full throttle with their gang on a multitude of different vehicles through the dusty flats of Western America."The game is all about recreating "original West Coast biker culture" -- leather, ass-less chaps, and all. Protecting turf, machines, bros, and their hos from rival gangs is at the core of this game. It sounds all rather GTA-ish, but with a distinct biker flavor to it. We're interested to see more. The game is being developed for "next-gen consoles" and PC; expect to see it sometime mid 2009.[Via press release]
