If you haven't yet had the chance to delve into Link's latest dimension-hopping journey, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the Nintendo 3DS is $29.99 at Fry's this week, making it a good time to catch up on one of last year's greatest games. A Link Between Worlds builds on the structure that defined the Super NES classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, taking place in the same overworld and featuring many elements familiar to series fans. The game emerges as a worthy adventure in its own right, however, thanks to its ingenious item-rental mechanic and open-ended quest that gives players the freedom to explore Hyrule and its dark counterpart Lorule at their own pace. A Link Between Worlds is available for $29.99 at Fry's through January 16.

Torchlight 2 is freely playable through Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific.

  • Assassin's Creed 4, more heavily discounted in Ubisoft's holiday sale

Ubisoft is currently hosting a massive sale, including half-priced versions of Assassin's Creed 4, and Far Cry 3 at 75 percent off. The caveats attached to these deals are all time-based and surprisingly complicated. For instance, that Assassin's Creed 4 discount is only available to UK PlayStation 3 owners on the PlayStation Network and draws to a close on December 21. The Far Cry 3 deal however, which can be found on Ubisoft's online store, runs until January 5 and includes a swath of other games such as Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and even a few discounts on non-Ubisoft games like Fallout 3. A cursory glance at the Ubisoft store shows The Walking Dead's PC incarnation at $6.25 and the Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition at a mere $5. If sorting through the reams of discounts seems like too much work, here's a trick that might help: While you can find all of Ubisoft's discounts by navigating its site, those who visit the Winter Sale page are able to pull up lists of games based on the size of their discounts. Edit: The text of this article has been altered to clarify the terms of the Assassin's Creed 4 discount.

  • Steam kicks off holiday sale with BioShock, Batman, more

It's that time of year again, boys and girls. No, not time to express your love for the people who raised you, but instead, it's time for Steam's holiday sale. This year's sale runs from December 19 to January 3 and as in previous iterations, it offers a wide swath of discounts. First, there are the daily discounts, which collect a handful of games and slash their prices. At the moment, you could pick up BioShock Infinite for $10 or Batman: Arkham Origins for $25. Then there are the Flash sales, which usually offer larger discounts than the daily discounts, though they only appear for eight hours. Right now you could pick up Counter-Strike: Global Offensive for $3.74, but eight hours from now you'll be out of luck. Not just a sale, Steam's holiday celebration is also a community event. Every eight hours three games will be offered up for the community to vote on. Whichever receives the most votes gets a deep, public discount. Voting also entitles you to one free Snow Globe card with which can unlock rare items in Steam games such as Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2. Or you could simply horde your cards until you have enough to craft the Snow Globe 2013 badge. This won't help you in-game, but it's a nice reminder of how you spent this year's holiday season.

If you're looking to buy a handheld during the holidays, you could do much worse than the 3DS XL - particularly now that Target has knocked 25 percent off its standard retail price. Keep in mind that this is only a limited time offer. Come next week the 3DS XL will return to its normal $200 price point. Further, those of you hoping to pick up a discounted 3DS XL won't be able to order the handheld over the 'net, but must instead head out into the harsh glare of real life to buy one at a Target retail location. Otherwise there's surprisingly few caveats here. No rebates to send in, no extra bundle items to purchase; it's simply a 25 percent off discount on Nintendo's most popular handheld. If you're in the market for one, now would be a very good time to visit your nearest Target location. (Image credit: Nicholas Eckhart)

Discount PC gaming retailer Indie Royale has started a new initiative dubbed Daily Royale whose purpose is to offer even bigger discounts on select games. The catch? You'll need to be fast to take advantage of these deals. Though Daily Royale only sells digital games, it does so using redeemable codes, and the site usually only has a limited number of codes to work with. The inaugural offering from the service is space shooter Strike Suit Zero at $5 (instead of its normal $20 price point), and with just under 67 hours left, Daily Royale has 942 codes remaining. Expect those to go quickly once word spreads of this site. Despite its name, Daily Royale plans to offer two new sales a week initially, with more frequent sales appearing once the site has established itself. If you'd like to make sure you're up to date on what Daily Royale has on offer, signing up for the site's newsletter is the fastest way to get updates on new sales. For those of you unwilling to leave the warm, soothing cocoon of social media however, there are also Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep tabs on.

  • Atlus summons Black Friday discounts on Vita, 3DS, PS3 games

Though not a retailer in the traditional sense, Atlus couldn't help but be caught up in the festive spirit of Black Friday and has slashed prices on nearly its entire catalog of games. Notable highlights include PlayStation 2 cult hit Odin Sphere for $5, Demon's Souls for $13.49 and Persona 4 Arena for $15 (or $23 if you opt for the game's Ultimate Edition which includes all of its DLC additions). If you're looking for a more recent release, Atlus has also discounted both PS3 and Vita versions of Dragon's Crown (each is now priced at $30), while also reducing the price of Shin Megami Tensei 4 from $50 to $30. As far as caveats, they're generally positive this time around. Most importantly, you should get a jump on these prices, as this sale is already going on. Atlus planned the sale to kick off on November 26 and it will run through December 3. What's more, you won't need to brave rabid crowds of human detritus to score these cheap games. All of the discounts Atlus has prepared for its especially lengthy Black Friday celebration are available either online or in retail stores. Now, when Turkey Claus comes gobbling down your chimney, you can wave off his gifts and instead devour his plump, succulent body in front of friends, family and a Dallas Cowboys game, just as Abraham Lincoln intended.

Rockstar is bringing holiday cheer to Grand Theft Auto 5 with a couple of discounted pieces of in-game content for GTA Online. Players can celebrate Thanksgiving with half-off deals for all rifles and rifle ammo and attachments, specifically the game's assault, carbine, heavy, advanced and sniper rifle weapons. The sales start tomorrow and last through December 1. Additionally, Rockstar discounted all black-colored clothing, accessories and vehicle modification items to celebrate Black Friday by 50 percent (though the sale for these items are also good through December 1). The vehicle modification items include window tinting, black license plates and black tire smoke for your car of choice.

There's no need to wait until Black Friday if you were hoping to get a good deal on World of Warcraft or StarCraft II; Blizzard is currently offering both titles and their expansions at a deep discount. New players to WoW can grab the base game, with all expansions up until Mists of Pandaria, for only $4.99. To add MoP to the mix, plunk down another $9.99 for the standard edition or $29.99 for the digital deluxe edition (a savings of $30.00 on each). StarCraft II fans can save twenty bucks and scoop up Wings of Liberty for $19.99 and/or Heart of the Swarm for $19.99 or $39.99 (standard and deluxe editions, respectively). For those who already have the games but want to get friends involved, there is also an option to gift the purchase. However, to take advantage of the deals you might want to act fast -- there's no guarantee that the sale will last.

  • Best Buy Black Friday ad trims prices on PS3, recent games

Following in the footsteps of Amazon, Target and Walmart, Best Buy has released its Black Friday ad. Though Best Buy's discounts primarily focus on consumer electronics, the store also has a few notable sales on gaming gadgets. A $200 PlayStation 3 bundle including The Last of Us and Batman: Arkham Origins highlights the sale (even as the ad fails to mention how much storage this PS3 model offers), while select games such as Battlefield 4 and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag have had their prices temporarily reduced to $35. The full ad can be found on Best Buy's site, but keep in mind that the above picture is the sum of the store's gaming discounts. Where other retailers have opted to start Black Friday a week early, Best Buy has instead extended the consumer holiday through the weekend. All deals found in the store's Black Friday ad are valid from November 28 through November 30.

  • Newegg slashes prices on nearly all Rockstar games

Need a copy of Max Payne 2 or LA Noire on the cheap? Newegg's got you covered. A visit to the online tech retailer reveals the ongoing "Rockstar Catalog Sale," a promotion that reduces the price on almost everything Rockstar Games has created by up to 76 percent. As a result of this sale, you can now purchase Manhunt for $3, Bully: Scholarship Edition for $5.10 or Grand Theft Auto 4 for $6. Before you get too excited, there are caveats to keep in mind here. First, these are all PC games (with occasional Mac compatibility), and these sale prices only apply to direct downloads. Second, there's no word on when this sale might end. Scouring Newegg's site offers nothing, and our attempts to contact the retailer went unanswered. If you want to take advantage of these prices, we'd suggest you do so soon. The biggest caveat however, is that this sale only applies to "almost everything" Rockstar has ever created. The first two Grand Theft Auto games are missing, as are the first and third Midnight Club entries. Grand Theft Auto 5 also fails to appear, but that's to be expected given that no PC version of GTA 5 yet exists.

GOG.com is holding a sizable sale on Activision properties this weekend. While the official number of discounted games is 32, the sale features a number of multi-game packs in series like Quest for Glory, King's Quest, Police Quest and Space Quest for $3.99 each, bringing the grand total of games included in the sale to 55. Other deals for the weekend include Phantasmagoria ($3.99) and Phantasmagoria 2 ($2.39), the three games in the Gabriel Knight trilogy for $2.39 each as well as Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura for $2.39. The entire sale comes to $97.28, which the digital retailer says can save players $146.60 on all 55 games. GOG.com's sale is good until Tuesday, November 12.

  • Super Meat Boy now $3 thanks to Steam's Midweek Madness sale

    11.06.2013

If you haven't yet experienced the soul-crushing difficulty of Super Meat Boy, now's your chance: From now until 7PM on November 7, the indie platformer is available on Steam at an 80 percent discount. Including 300-plus stages, boss fights and sadistic jumping puzzles, Super Meat Boy is not for the faint of heart. It does however, offer immense bragging rights for anyone able to finish the game. Then, once you've trumped every level, you can start building your own diabolical masterpieces in the game's level editor, or pour another dozen hours into Super Meat Boy seeking its hidden warp areas and well-hidden secret characters. The one major caveat here is that while you can play Super Meat Boy on a keyboard, the game's split-second timing almost demands players utilize a gamepad. Fortunately, the game's rudimentary control scheme lends itself well to almost any controller, including Sony's new DualShock 4.

If you've been waiting for a good opportunity to pick up Shadowrun Returns, this is your moment: Until October 30 at 10AM, the PC and Mac incarnations of Shadowrun Returns are available from Steam at a 33 percent discount. For $13.39, Shadowrun Returns offers players a grimy, dystopian futurescape that works nicely as a singleplayer experience, but really comes into its own when you examine the Steam Workshop community that's built up around the game. After completing the 10- to 12-hour campaign that ships with Shadowrun Returns, you'll find dozens of new adventures there available for free download. This was only attractive potential when our review was published, but the community has blossomed since, and it's now trivial to find numerous player-created adventures that humble the campaign built by developer Harebrained Schemes. In addition to cutting its base price, this Daily Deal also reduces the cost of the Shadowrun Returns Digital Deluxe edition. That version includes a downloadable soundtrack as well as a .pdf containing short stories set in the Shadowrun universe, alongside the game. Buying the Digital Deluxe edition will now set you back $23.44, though if you already own Shadowrun Returns, you can upgrade to Digital Deluxe for $10.05.

To celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year, Capcom has slashed prices on its Nintendo 3DS and Wii U Resident Evil games by a sizable 50 percent. From now until the end of October, prospective bio-weapon slayers will find the Wii U version of Resident Evil Revelations priced at $20 on the console's eShop. The 3DS iteration of Revelations will set you back $10, a price point shared by the handheld Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. After Halloween, these discounts will drift away like so many discarded Butterfinger wrappers on the streets of suburban America. With discounts in place, should you take this opportunity to add a new Resident Evil adventure to your shelves? That's a tough call. All three of the games included in this discount scheme are relatively middling Resident Evil entries. Our review of Revelations awarded the game 3 of 5 stars, saying that while the 3DS version of the game is impressive, its graphical prowess is notably less stunning on the more powerful Wii U. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D on the other hand, received 2.5 of 5 stars, and is pithily described as "little more than a fully-priced proof of concept."

  • 2DS down to £99 at some UK retailers

    10.22.2013

Nintendo's brand-new 2DS handheld, which launched alongside Pokemon X/Y earlier this month, is already about £10 cheaper at certain retailers in the United Kingdom. Originally priced at £109.99, the svelte little device can now be had online for £99 from Amazon UK and Tesco Direct. A couple of brick and mortar installations are also on the discount train, with Sainsbury's matching Amazon's price drop and Argos running its own £99 bundle promotion from tomorrow through October 26, MCVUK reports. It's important to note that this is not an official price drop from Nintendo, but rather a bunch of British retailers taking a proactive stance on pricing ahead of the imminent holiday shopping season. Regardless, £10 works out to about $400,000 at today's imaginary exchange rates, so it's still worth doing.

Ahead of next-gen console launches this November, GameStop is cutting the prices of its used PS3 and Xbox 360 hardware from October 11 to October 24. During the promotion, customers can pick up the original Xbox 360 for $99.99 (previously $129.99) and the Xbox 360 Slim 4 GB system for $119.99 (previously $179.99). All pre-owned PS3 hardware is marked down to $149.99 (from up to $259.99). GameStop is also throwing in any used game priced at $19.99 or less for free with any used hardware purchase. Additionally, those with GameStop's PowerUp Rewards loyalty program card in hand can get in on the promotion a day early and also receive a 30 percent discount on used PS3 and Xbox 360 accessories. That is on top of the 10 percent discount program members receive off their used purchases.
