Anonymous deals with its QAnon branding problem
When you're a notorious hacking entity like Anonymous, and a pro-Trump conspiracy cult (QAnon) steals your branding (while claiming you're the impostor), the obvious thing to do is declare cyberwar. That's exactly what Anonymous did this past week in a press announcement, followed by a social media and press offensive. So far Anonymous has managed to take over QAnon's hashtags (while adding #OpQAnon and others) and dox a couple hundred members of Trump's pedophilia-obsessed, "deep state" doomsday cult. QAnon's mouthpieces responded exactly as we'd expect, with taunts and tweets saying: "These people are STUPID!! They have no brains and no skills. Typical 'empty threat' terrorists! But DO NOT click their links!! Virus city baby!!"
AP investigation details how Russia hacked the DNC’s emails
Today, an extensive Associated Press investigation revealed just how Russian actors hacked into the Hillary Clinton campaign. A single successful phishing email out thirty attempts sent in March 2016 gave the hacking group access to plenty of the Democratic candidate's secrets, which had severe consequences for her campaign and the party as a whole. As the AP reveals, this wasn't just a few messages that happened to deceive a lone gullible employee: The hacking campaign attempted to compromise Clinton's inner circle and over 130 party employees and supporting staff.
Trump adviser spoke with DNC hacker during the campaign
Roger Stone, an adviser to Donald Trump during his successful presidential campaign, exchanged private messages with Guccifer 2.0, the person (or group) that hacked and leaked documents from the Democratic National Committee in 2016. The DNC hack occurred in July and was followed by multiple other breaches of Democratic party systems. Stone and Guccifer 2.0 communicated via Twitter private messages in mid-August, according to The Washington Times. The messages were sent about two weeks after Stone published an article on Breitbart claiming Russia didn't hack the DNC -- Guccifer 2.0 did.
'Guccifer 2.0' DNC leaker returns, as 'Shadow Brokers' exit
Throughout the presidential campaign last year, a hacker calling themselves "Guccifer 2.0" leaked DNC documents, before going dark just before the actual election. Now, after being tagged as a front for Russian government-directed hacking, the identity has returned, writing in much clearer English and taunting US intelligence. In a blog post, Guccifer 2.0 claims again to have no connection to Russia, and refutes assertions made by the DHS and FBI to the contrary.
Guccifer 2.0 dumps a bunch of Clinton Foundation donor data (updated)
Julian Assange's "October surprise" press conference may have been a bust but his Gilligan, the hacker calling himself Guccifer 2.0, came through on Tuesday, releasing a large database of information reportedly stolen from the Clinton Foundation. The dump includes the names, addresses and emails of both individual and corporate donors as well as their contribution amounts.
FBI investigating potential hack of Democrat officials' cells
Reuters reports that the FBI is actively investigating whether several high ranking Democrat officials' cellphones have been hacked. The Bureau believes that this attack, should it be confirmed, could be tied to the earlier DNC hacks and that of former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. Details remain sketchy at this point -- there's no word on how many phones may have been compromised or their owners' positions within government. The FBI, the Clinton campaign and the DNC have yet to publicly comment. We'll update as more developments come to light.
Email hacker Guccifer gets 52 months in plea bargain
Marcel Lehel Lazar, a Romanian hacker better known by his handle, Guccifer, was sentenced to 52 months in federal prison Thursday morning. He pled guilty to charges of "unauthorized access to a protected computer and aggravated identity theft" back in May stemming from a series of high profile hacks of celebrities and heads of state.
Clinton's email claims challenged by FBI director during hearing (update)
FBI director James Comey testified in front of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today, during which he offered more details on the bureau's investigation into Hillary Clinton's email. Comey told Congress that the Romanian hacker who goes by the name Guccifer admitted to the FBI that he lied about hacking Clinton's email server.
