  • Forget Comixology: get your inexpensive comics from the Humble Bundle folks

Pretty soon Humble Bundle is going to run out of new things to sell. The company has already conquered video games, ebooks, comedy albums and briefly dabbled in film, now the pay-what-you-want kings are turning its sights on comic books. Starting at 11AM PT today you can get a fine collection of digital comics from Image, including Saga and East of West for as little as a penny. If you do care to cough up more (over $15, to be specific), you can get vol. 1 and vol. 20 of The Walking Dead. But this is just the beginning: Humble wants to be known for its book bundles as well as its game offerings. Once this Image Comic promotion is over on May 15th, Humble will be launching a new tab on its site dedicated to ebooks, audio books and comics. That means that there will always be two bundles running simultaneously: a game or other media bundle on the front page and an ebook bundle on a separate tab. And you can expect two different book bundles per-month.

Humble Bundle PC and Android 9 received three more games this week, bringing the total number of games (appropriately) to nine. Those that spend more than the average sale price for the bundle, which is currently $3.89, get The Shivah, Savant Ascent and Syder Arcade in addition to the six games originally announced for the bundle. Each game is available through Steam for PC, Mac and Linux, via DRM-free download and on Android. Created by adventure game developed Wadjet Eye Games, The Shivah follows Rabbi Russell Stone as he surprisingly receives a generous sum of money to keep his synagogue open. Savant Ascent comes from D-Pad Studios and blends enemy-thrashing with the music of electronic musician Savant. A PS4 version of the game was announced in March. Lastly, Studio Evil's Syder Arcade is described as a "free-scrolling, multi-directional shoot em' up." Humble Bundle PC and Android 9 will end on Tuesday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m. EDT. • Fast2Play hosting sales of Steam keys from Humble Bundles

    by

Having a great Saturday where everything feels right in the world? Well uh, sorry, but we might derail that train of contentment. Game Informer reports that 7 Entertainment's online storefront Fast2Play and sister site Kinguin are hosting the sale of Steam keys purchased through Humble Bundles. Given that Humble Bundle patrons typically split their payment between the bundle's game developers, charities and the Humble Bundle staff, those groups would be cut from the profits made on resold keys. The Humble Bundle's terms also state that its licenses are not meant for commercial use, making the resale of keys obtained through Humble Bundles a violation of those terms. Ed Key, a developer of Proteus, told Game Informer that he was able to confirm Fast2Play's selling of Steam keys obtained from Humble Bundle purchases. Key discovered this by purchasing Proteus through Fast2Play, then comparing that Steam key to an inventory that had been sold through Humble Indie Bundle 8. Key has since succeeded in having Proteus removed from Fast2Play and some of its sister sites. Game Informer points out that Fast2Play is also hosting sales of Steam Gift versions of Awesomenauts and The Binding of Isaac. While that doesn't affect charitable proceeds, Steam Support states that "any accounts tied to a redeemed gift from a fraudulent source may be suspended." This possibility is noted in the "Activations Details" section of its Steam Gift sales, which asks customers to "please remember you are doing it at your own risk!" A 7 Entertainment representative has responded to the story, explaining that it was "never in our intention to expose any indie developer to any financial losses." The representative states that Fast2Play is an e-store with products from official suppliers, adding that it's awaiting an explanation from the distributor of the involved codes. The representative also described Kinguin as "an Ebay for gamers," explaining that Kinguin itself does not own those keys. [Image: Fast2Play]

The new Thief is also on the Humble Store page, but it's $50, without a charming green discount sticker. The Square Enix sale runs for 48 hours, until Friday, March 28 at 10AM PT. • Devolver Digital on mixing indie movies and games for charity

    03.19.2014

If its recent Humble Bundle proves anything, it's that Devolver isn't settling for a footprint in one entertainment medium. With its games and a series of indie films on offer in the latest bundle, Devolver mixed its two passions in the pay-what-you-want, charity-driven Humble Bundle series. Devolver's Nigel Lowrie says the company is attempting to do for film what it has done in the indie game publishing space. "We're mostly known for games but Mike Wilson, one of the partners here, is also very much into independent film and trying to replicate a lot of what we do for games on the film side, and so we have Devolver Films now," Lowrie tells Joystiq. "The Humble people have been really cool and they let us experiment. So the idea was, 'Lets try out games and films together and see if that works,' and it lined up with some charities we wanted to help." The Devolver Double Debut Bundle supports The Film Collaborative, a non-profit "committed to distribution education and facilitation of independent film" and the GoFundMe campaign for the cancer treatment of Independent Games Festival chairman Brandon Boyer.

The Devolver Digital Double Debut bundle offers a mix of screen-based activities – five games and five movies – now through March 16. It's hosted by Humble Bundle, so some items are available for whatever price you want, and others unlock if you pay more than a certain amount, this time $10. Available for any price are the games Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition and Shadow Warrior Classic Redux, plus the movies Austin High, The Poisoning and One Couch at a Time. Pay more than $10 to also snag the games Defense Technica, Marc Ecko's Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure and Cosmic DJ, and the films MARS and Good Game. This bundle marks the debuts of Cosmic DJ and Good Game. Cosmic DJ is a music-creation game designed for everyone to pick up and play, regardless of musical competence, and it's available now DRM-free on PC and Mac. Purchase will include a Steam key once the game launches there. Good Game is an independent documentary from Nine Hour Films that chronicles a year on the premiere pro gaming team, Evil Geniuses. Payments are distributed among Humble, the developers and charity, and this time the charity hits close to home for many developers. Proceeds from the bundle can go to the Brandon Boyer Cancer Treatment Relief gofundme campaign – Boyer is chairman of the Independent Games Festival and founder of game culture site Venus Patrol. • Fez, Starseed Pilgrim, Beatbuddy arrive late to the Humble Bundle 11 party

    02.25.2014

The already-tempting smorgasbord of Humble Indie Bundle 11 has been bolstered by the addition of three new games today: Fez, Starseed Pilgrim and Beatbuddy. Fez is Polytron Corporation's puzzle-platformer about Gomez, a cute sprite stuck in a seemingly 2D world. After receiving a magical hat, Gomez discovers the ability to rotate 2D planes, unlocking a third dimension within the game world. Starseed Pilgrim, an IGF design nominee, is all about tending a symphonic garden. As a galactic gardener, you must populate the vast white void of space with color and music. Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is an underwater exploration game driven by music. As the titular Beatbuddy, players navigate beautiful hand-drawn environments in search of a way to save the residents of Symphonia. As with previous Humble Bundles, all three of these games are immediately unlocked for those who have already purchased the bundle. Would-be spenders need to contribute more than the going average, which is just shy of $5 right now, in order to snag these three. [Image: Polytron Corporation]
