'Mario Kart Tour' multiplayer goes live on March 8th

As soon as Mario Kart Tour brought Nintendo's racing game to Androids and iPhones last fall, one of the major complaints was its lack of multiplayer. Firing shells or dropping banana peels to disrupt your friends is most of the appeal, and now everyone will be able to do it. On March 8th at 11 PM ET the game will officially launch multiplayer, after testing it out across a couple of beta periods. According to Nintendo, races will have rules that change daily to mix up the action in Standard and Gold races while the featured cup rotates every 15 minutes. Otherwise, you can setup custom races with friends or nearby players, although those won't impact progress on a grade that ranks you against other Mario Kart Tour players from around the world. We'll see if that's enough to overcome its free-to-play payment wrinkles and keep folks in the action. You can try out the free to play racer now (or just give it another chance once multiplayer is available) via Google's Play Store or the Apple App Store.

Now everyone can play 'Mario Kart Tour' multiplayer

At launch, Nintendo's Mario Kart for mobile devices (iOS, Android) had a major missing piece: multiplayer. Now Mario Kart Tour has kicked off the second round of its beta test for head-to-head racing, and this time it doesn't require that players purchase a $5 Gold Pass subscription for access. Being able to race your friends instead of just AI and the clock might make its touch-based controls and various free-to-play wrinkles a bit easier to stomach, but you won't know until you try. You can race random competitors, or turn on your location to race your friends -- if they're nearby. If you've unlocked at least one cup within the game, then all you'll need to do is click the menu button and switch to multiplayer to race against live competition. The only thing to note for now is that multiplayer saves won't transfer over to the proper release once the beta ends at midnight ET next Tuesday, January 28th.

Mario Kart Tour's second multiplayer beta will be open to all

Still playing Mario Kart Tour? The development team has announced today that a second multiplayer beta is on the way. Unlike the last test -- which required an expensive Gold Pass subscription to enter -- this one will be open to all players. It will also allow you to race with competitors "in your immediate vicinity" for the first time. (You will, therefore, need an internet connection and location data enabled to play.) "If you weren't able to join the previous test and are interested in multiplayer, we're eager to hear your feedback during this one," one of the game's news bulletins explained.

We knew it was coming, and now the multiplayer mode for Mario Kart Tour has arrived just in time for the holidays -- but it's only in beta and it's only available to Gold Pass holders.

'Mario Kart Tour' is a simple racer surrounded by free-to-play complexity

Mario Kart is a gloriously simple video game. Yes, there are some advanced techniques -- rocket starts, drift braking and the like -- that are borderline essential if you want to play Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online. For the most part though, it's an approachable racer for the masses. With Mario Kart Tour, the first installment for mobile devices, Nintendo has managed to simplify the control scheme even further. In this touch-friendly version, your racer drives forward automatically. Swiping horizontally will cause them to turn or drift, depending on the control scheme you've chosen, while dragging up or down will fire the item they're holding forwards or backwards.

We've been waiting since January of last year to get a taste of Mario Kart on mobile devices, but it's almost here. After a few delays, Mario Kart Tour launches today on compatible Android (4.4 or higher) and iOS (10.0 or higher) devices, and many people are reporting it's already installed on their iPhones and iPads. The bad news is that you can't play until the servers open at around 4AM ET / 1AM PT / 10AM CEST.

Mario Kart Tour was supposed to be available in March 2019 until Nintendo delayed its release to give it a bit more polish. Now, the gaming giant is finally ready to roll it out and has announced an official launch date for its mobile-friendly racing game: September 25th. The Mario Kart Tour website even shows that pre-registrations are now open for both Android and iOS users, so they can be notified as soon as the game is ready to download.

It's almost here! Today, Nintendo announced a "Closed Beta Test" for Mario Kart Tour, a long-delayed mobile spin-off that we currently know diddly-squat about. (Seriously, Nintendo hasn't released a single screenshot.) The sneak-preview will be available to Android users in the US and Japan between May 22nd and June 4th. (The final game, of course, will also be available on iOS devices.) If you're intrigued by the title, you can sign up using the QR code on the official Mario Kart Tour website. The long-delayed app is scheduled to come out in "summer 2019," the same time as Doctor Mario, a new game co-developed with messaging titan Line.

Nintendo delays mobile 'Mario Kart Tour' game until the summer

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo needs a little more time to polish its mobile-friendly version of Mario Kart. Beyond the name and target platform, we know precisely zilch about Mario Kart Tour, which was originally scheduled to come out by March 2019. But we haven't seen a single screenshot or Nintendo Direct-style video explaining what the game is like or how it works. So it wasn't a huge shock when the company announced today that the game is now scheduled for summer 2019. Why the delay? "In order to improve [the] quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch," Nintendo explained in its Q3 earnings report.

Nintendo will bring 'Mario Kart Tour' to smartphones by March 2019

After Super Mario Run and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, the next Nintendo game to get a mobile version is Mario Kart. Following up on the company's plan to release 2-3 games per year (there's a Zelda game in development too) Mario Kart Tour is scheduled to arrive at some point before March 2019. Other than the title and vague release window we don't know much about the game yet. It will probably ship after the launch of Nintendo Switch Online, and, given the lack of detail around Nintendo's Mario movie, well ahead of the animated feature announced tonight.
