Click to Enker the galleryCapcom will make downloadable Special Stages available in Mega Man 10 throughout April, for one dollar each. Should you make it to the end of each stage, you'll meet some musically-named bosses that will only be recognizable if you're a huge Mega Man nerd! The three stages feature the return of the Mega Man Killers, a group of bosses from the Game Boy Mega Man games. Special Stage 1, available the week of April 5, features Enker from the first portable Mega Man game, a robot with the ability to absorb and reflect shots. Special Stage 2 features Mega Man III's Punk, who uses a large spinning weapon called the Screw Crusher, and Special Stage 3 includes Ballade from Mega Man IV, who uses the explosive Ballade Cracker. Both Special Stage 2 and 3 will be released the week of April 26. %Gallery-88808%

  • 8-bit Left 4 Dead guy's latest project: Mega Man 9 HD Remix

Eric Ruth, an independent developer who more than proved his prowess with Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead, recently showed off the fruits of his latest labor: A completely renovated, high-definition version of Mega Man 9. Ruth managed to recreate every single character, enemy and background by hand, programmed the game, and used a number of fan-made remixes of the original game's tracks. You can check out a video demonstration of Galaxy Man's stage just past the jump. Ruth has decided not to complete the game for a number of reasons; the fear of a C&D from Capcom being a substantial one of them. He's already working on his next project -- and after making an HD game into an 8-bit game, and then an 8-bit game into an HD game, we can't wait to see what he does next.

  • WiiWare Mega Man 10 gets DLC Bass character on April 5; additional DLC detailed

Even though Mega Man 10 includes a playable version of Mega Man 9's Proto Man at no additional cost, Capcom will still offer at least one additional character as premium DLC. Bass, a sort of evil Mega Man character introduced in Mega Man 7 and playable in Mega Man & Bass, will be released as a DLC character for the Wii version of Mega Man 10 on April 5 for 200 Wii Points ($2), according to Nintendo's Mega Man 10 page. A special stage will be available the same day for 300 Points. An "Endless Attack Mode" will follow for 300 points on April 26, along with two more special stages for 100 Points each. These DLC dates are likely to be different for the other versions of Mega Man 10, if the add-on content is planned for all releases, since the release dates for the actual game are different on other platforms. We're contacted Capcom to verify. [Via Protodude's Rockman Corner]

  • Mega Man Zero Collection delayed in Japan

Capcom has terrible luck with handheld Mega Man compilations. Remember how a collection of the Game Boy Mega Man games was supposed to be released alongside the GameCube/PS2 Mega Man Anniversary Collection? Remember when that actually happened? (No, because it didn't.) Now the Japanese website for the DS Mega Man Zero Collection reveals that the game's April 22 release date in that region has been delayed to an unspecified date. We've put in an inquiry with Capcom about whether this affects the "early summer" release date for North America. But if the company doesn't know when it'll release the game in Japan, the other dates would pretty much have to be up in the air as well. %Gallery-86228%[Via Protodude's Rockman Corner]

  • Collect some Mega Man Zero Collection screens and art

Capcom passed along some screens and artwork of its upcoming Mega Man Zero Collection for DS, though the screens look suspiciously singular. Essentially, these are screenshots of the Game Boy Advance originals, without the DS's second screen. But since the screens focus on the important bit (the actual games), and because many people interested in this collection probably haven't been exposed to the original games, we're posting them anyway. As a nice bonus, Capcom also sent out artwork featuring Zero looking pretty freaking cool. Mega Man Zero Collection arrives in stores early this summer. %Gallery-86228%

Capcom has confirmed a staggered March release for Mega Man's second, current-gen, 8-bit quest. Nintendo Wii fans will get behind the blue-bot's laser first with Mega Man 10 hitting the WiiWare service on March 1; PlayStation 3 fans can expect Mega Man's return on March 11; while Xbox 360 users will have to wait until March 31 to get their blast on. Capcom also revealed images detailing Mega Man's upcoming arsenal, as well as images that show off the difference between the game's Normal and Easy modes. Spot images of all the new weapons and a glimpse at the game's challenge mode on the Unity blog. Update: New concept art of Mega Man's weapons and screens for his upcoming adventure have been added to our gallery. %Gallery-80496%

  • Mega Man 4 rated by Australian board

Australia's OFLC classification of Mega Man 4 has us wondering if the blue bomber's fourth adventure will become a western Virtual Console offering. Already slated for release in Japan, this would be the first indication that the game is being offered via VC off the island. The android's first three missions are already available on the VC outside of Japan. Mega Man IV is when things started getting campy with the baddies, as we were introduced to that light bulb guy and the one with a vacuum on his head. Of course, instead of picking up this series bit by bit on Virtual Console, if there's any chance of finding the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, you should definitely do that. It includes Mega Man 1-8, but can end up costing a pretty penny now.

In the mood for several more Mega Man games simultaneously? Capcom just announced its plans to localize the Mega Man Zero Collection for Nintendo DS. The collection contains all four games in the Mega Man X spinoff series Mega Man Zero, originally released on Game Boy Advance between 2002 and 2005. The press release promises "new modes," though it doesn't specify what those modes are. We know that the Japanese version includes some kind of artwork collection. The collection will be released in "early summer 2010," just in time for us to have given up on trying to complete Mega Man 10.

  • Here are the Mega Man 10 Achievements you'll never earn

If you managed to get all of the Achievements in Mega Man 9, then either your father's name is Jor-El or you're some kind of robotic boy yourself. Well, the Achievements (via Xbox360 Achievements) for Mega Man 10 look like they're going to be along the same lines: incredibly tough to unlock. Actually, some of them are identical to Mega Man 9, including the Achievement for defeating all eight bosses with just your standard weapon and finishing the game in under an hour. But, there's even tougher ones this time, such as the ridiculous defeat the eight bosses without your helmet on, the extremely ridiculous clear the game without using any energy, mystery, or weapon tanks and even the ain't ever gonna happen clear the entire game without taking any damage. However, there's hope in Easy Mode -- it's possible some of these could be unlocked by playing the game that way, though we were unable to get confirmation on this from Capcom. As for PS3 Trophies, it's a safe bet they'll be the same as the Achievements. [Via Protodude's Rockman Corner]

  • Mega Man Zero Collection trailer: it's Mega Man Zero games on DS

    01.18.2010

Capcom offered the first look at Rockman Zero Collection with a new trailer on the game's website. Well, second look if you count the original games as the first look. Unsurprisingly, the collection as presented on the DS looks just like the games running on GBA, with some placeholder imagery on the bottom screen. Most of the time, it appears to be character art of Zero or the current boss, but the trailer also shows a menu of what looks like an artwork collection. So you can play games, and look at pictures from those games! Basically, if this is localized, buy it because you want copies of these games, not for any new content, though some might still show up. • Mega Man Zero series to be re-released as DS collection

If you took an extended break from Mega Man in the 2000s, until the release of Mega Man 9, you missed out on some great, punishing games developed by MM9 creator Inti Creates -- and it appears that Capcom's going to give you a chance to go back to them. Capcom Japan opened a site for "Rockman Zero Collection," a DS compilation of all four Game Boy Advance Rockman Zero/Mega Man Zero games, featuring the adventures of Mega Man X's buddy Zero after the X series. He has a sword. The collection will be released in Japan on April 22. Capcom has yet to announced a localization, but we're confident the publisher will, given the general attitude of pro-Mega Man sentiment surrounding the upcoming release of Mega Man 10. • Mega Man 10's Robot Masters revealed

    01.13.2010

CoroCoro magazine has posted character portraits and descriptions of all eight Robot Masters in Mega Man 10. While there are a few weird ones, for the most part, the foes feature the usual fire/ice/water/explosive themes we expect from Mega Man bosses. We've seen Sheep Man and Commando Man previously, but now we know about Nitro Man, Strike Man (the sports-themed boss whose level was shown at CES), Blade Man (whose head is a blade), Chill Man, Solar Man, and ... Pump Man. He has a "water-themed shield weapon," according to the short blurb accompanying his portrait. (You can see portraits of all eight over on the Mega Man Network.) And after the break, see Dueling Analogs' take on the new Easy Mode, in which the cartoonist does his very best to make you feel ashamed of ever considering it an option.

Capcom is showing off Mega Man 10 at CES. CES has possibly the highest concentration of video cameras of any location on Earth. You see where this is going. After the break, we've embedded off-screen footage of the faux-retro downloadable game's stadium stage, captured and written up in preview form by The Mega Man Network. Capcom didn't allow the boss's name to be released, so it's just "the stadium stage" for now. The MM Network blogger managed to play, and record, the stage in both normal difficulty and the new Easy Mode, allowing us to see some of the differences. It's especially notable in the goal post mid-boss area: in normal difficulty, there's a spiked ball that constantly slams into Mega Man, but in Easy Mode that obstacle is absent, making the boss a fairly simple matter. At the end, the game announces that, like Mega Man 9, there will be DLC and a time attack mode. Mega Man 10 will be available on Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 as a download in March. [Via GoNintendo]

The first trailer for Capcom's multiplatform retro revival, Mega Man 10, has given us a glimpse at all the evil, robotic things we'll be killed by over, and over, and over again. Evil robot castles! Evil robot light bulbs! Also, delightfully, the trailer includes a bit of the new soundtrack, which is as catchy and series-appropriate as that of its predecessor. The last part of the clip gives us an idea of the scope of the new Easy Mode, which is quite a bit easier than we expected. We anticipated reduced numbers of enemies and a greater supply of health powerups, but Easy Mode actually makes the levels less complicated! In our gallery, you can see new screenshots that hint at many of the stages we'll be challenging. There's an ice stage, a sand stage, a computery stage, a fire stage, and a ... truck stage? %Gallery-80496%

Like its predecessor, the upcoming retro-inspired Mega Man 10 appears to be destined for a multiplatfom release. Although originally discovered on Nintendo's WiiWare release calendar, the latest issue of Famitsu lists the upcoming Capcom downloadable on Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade. The news is rather unsurprising, but any excuse to use this exquisite Sheep Man fan art is good to us! [Thanks, sacra!]

Though we just found out about Mega Man 10, we won't have to wait long at all before we can try it. Nintendo's new Q1 schedule gives a March 2010 date for the WiiWare run-and-gun -- just two months after Capcom starts releasing Phoenix Wright ports. What a wonderful time to have an Internet-connected Wii and enjoy Capcom products. With the release so close, we expect more information to come out soon, starting with character art for all the bosses and the mysterious third character. We currently only know of the delightful Sheep Man and Commando Man.

If you're in Los Angeles tomorrow and have an interest in either Mega Man collectibles or eBay profits, be sure to get to 1013 W. Olympic Blvd. in LA tomorrow between 2pm and 5pm -- actually, we're guessing you're going to need to get there early. And bring a printout of this coupon with you. Capcom and i am 8 Bit plan to hand out some kind of extremely limited Mega Man swag in enticing E-Tank boxes. It's likely related to the newly announced Mega Man 10, and with the Mega Man 10 "box art" done by i am 8 Bit's Gerald de Jesus, it's possible that the item will bear that image. If you get one, be sure to let us know what's in the box! We have to know what is in the box.

Get your weapons ready! The latest issue of Nintendo Power features some mega news -- specifically, the upcoming release of Mega Man 10 on WiiWare. The new installment, like the brilliant Mega Man 9, uses an NES-style aesthetic, and features wacky new bosses like Sheep Man. Sheep Man! Proto Man returns as a playable character (this time immediately, and not as time-delayed DLC), along with a third mystery character! The extra character's identity: just one of the details, like the release date or whether or not it's on other platforms, that we're just going to have to wait to find out. An image in the writeup also reveals an Easy Mode for the game, which we can imagine being welcome for a lot of people not accustomed to the uniquely painful experience of trying to complete an NES Mega Man title.

  • Mega Man goes to 8-bit Hell in Doom 2 mod [update]

Doom's main character always seemed to be lacking that little extra something. Sure, he had a BFG 9000 and could battle demons with the best of 'em, but did he have a gun arm? How about a body covered by totally sweet blue metal armor? Didn't think so. And that makes all the difference in the Mega Man mod for Doom 2, created by Mike Hill of the UK. "I've been modding for Doom ever since I first got a hold of the PC version ... some may find it hard to believe that the Doom modding scene is still live and kicking after all these years," Hill told Joystiq. The 22-year-old built the mod (still in alpha) as an homage to "the time when I feel Mega Man was in full fruition: on the NES," harnessing not just 8-bit sprites for characters but for entire levels. Mike Hill's hope is that someday the mod will contain "all the levels and weapons from Mega Man 1–6 (and maybe even 9)," though, as of right now, he's still got a long way to go. "Right now the gameplay is a bit slow paced and unbalanced, and the maps are extremely difficult to navigate ... expect a more stable release some time next year." He promises more levels and more weapons in 2010, but we're hoping the power of Joystiq BioMass™ can spur Mike on to get us more Mega Man deathmatch asap. Go forth and comment, BioMass! Update: We've added a video of the mod in action just after the break.

For the longest time, we didn't understand game soundtracks. "Hey, just turn the game on and walk away," we said. But after our 17th red ring and 10th Cell chip to commit melty, plasticy suicide, we quickly began to see the value. Capcom's feeding our new habit with three new additions to the Music section of the Capcom Store: Ten Years Of Resident Evil: The Official Soundtrack, Resident Evil 5: Original Soundtrack and Street Fighter IV: Original Soundtrack. If you too are hesitant about leaping into game soundtracks, Capcom's sweetening the offer with 25 percent off the Mega Man 9 score for anyone who purchases one of the new offerings.
