Adding himself to the short list of things we associate with Sweden other than Volvo, Ikea, and delicious meatballs, Stockholm's Pato Pooh recently released a music video for his song "Follow Me." It features a regular who's who of 8- and 16-bit era gaming in the process, referencing everything from Mega Man's opening to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He even kills off that snickering jerk dog from Duck Hunt we all love to hate. Who's laughing now, dog? Who's laughing now?![Thanks, SuerDOS!]

  • Inafune: Capcom, Bungie collaboration for future title 'interesting' idea

Bungie.net reports that Mega Man creator and Capcom R&D head, Keiji Inafune, stopped by the developer's office in the wake of PAX. Apart from getting his hands on Halo 3: ODST ahead of its launch, he told the site, "I wanted to come down to Bungie in order to see just how well our philosophies on game design matched up. If things clicked, I know it would be interesting to collaborate together on a title in the future." Inafune also said he was "curious about how they made their games in hopes of being up to add some of the flavor into Capcom games." Oh em gee Mega Man FPS confirmed! Master Chief, Arbiter and Cortana in Bungie vs. Capcom! All jokes (or are they?) aside, it's pretty smart for a Japanese dev that's seeking partnerships with Western developers to scope out one of the more popular teams.Plus: Mas-ter Chief. Me-ga Man. Think about it.

  • Rumor: Frank West, Zero to be in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom

Shoryuken forum user mumu recently went snooping around the Japanese site for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and uncovered some interesting items. Within the source code of the character section of the site, mumu found lines of code hinting towards the remaining secret characters: 'images/oncharactor_btn_zero.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_frank.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_yatter02.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_joe.jpg' 'images/oncharactor_btn_tekkabla.jpg' So, aside from yesterday's Tekkaman Blade, mumu postulates that Dead Rising's Frank West and Zero from the Mega Man series are also going to be in the game and, on the Tatsunoko side, we'll get Yatterman #2 from Yatterman and Joe Asakura from Gatchaman. If you'll excuse us, we'll be crying in the corner, objecting once again to the lack of Phoenix Wright.[Via Siliconera]

We love our parents, don't get us wrong, but we seriously missed out on a large part of awesome during our childhood thanks to these wonderful statues. Featuring your standard blue Mega Man, little sister Roll, and Chozo-suited Samus (among others), the set of resin statues was created by our new BFF, Dimension Diver (not to be confused with Holy Diver, though just as awesome). Head past the break to check out Samus and Roll, but be sure to hit up Tokyo Hunter if you're looking for more gaming characters. There are lots, believe us.[Via Tiny Cartridge]

  • Who changed Rockman's name to Mega Man?

    08.01.2009

Every gamer worth his or her salt knows that Mega Man's real name isn't Mega Man. The true fans of the Blue Bomber know that he is known as Rock Man in his homeland of Japan. So, who renamed the little guy? Turns out it was former Capcom senior vice president Joseph Morici. The Mega Man Network uncovered the info in a 1993 interview with Morici with (the beloved) Game Players magazine. So why did he change the name? He just didn't like it. "The title was horrible," said Morici. And thus, an American gaming icon was born. But, as Capcom Unity points out, the "Rockman" name brings the musical names of many of the other characters into context (Roll, Beat, Bass, etc.). Still, having grown up with Mega Man, "Rockman" just doesn't sound right.

There, that about covers it, right? We're sure this news is exciting to those of you who've found the hours in the day/willpower to tell Mega Man games apart anymore. If Mega Man 9 isn't retro enough for you, you might enjoy the enormous, jagged pixels found in the Atari 2600 demo version of Mega Man created for 2007's I Am 8-Bit show. David Galloway has finally released the demo on Atari Age's forum, which means that you can download the game and play it on an Atari 2600 emulator right now.The brief demo is an impressively faithful translation of the NES game's mechanics, with Mega Man running, jumping and shooting just as you'd expect (though shooting is mapped to down on the joystick, because the 2600 only has one button). The demake ends at the Elec Man fight, which is even harder in this version than it is in the original. A playthrough of the entire demo follows after the break.[Via GameSetWatch]

Capcom is making good on its promise to release a ridiculous amount of PSP and PS1 titles on the PSN and has announced, via the PS Blog, the next batch of games that will be available to (re)purchase. Resident Evil fans won't be disappointed with the rest of the PS1 franchise entries making their way to the PSN, alongside Dino Crisis. PSP fans will also get their hands on seven titles, including two Mega Man games, two Capcom Classics collections, Darkstalkers and Power Stone Collection. It's a pretty good bunch of games and you can see the full list after the break. Other than Capcom Classics Remixed, which releases in America this week, none of the other games have been dated for any territory, nor even confirmed for European release. We've contacted Capcom Europe to ask, but release dates for the US will be revealed on the PlayStation Blog over time.

According to Siliconera, Capcom has just released Rockman Complete Works, a PS1 enhanced version of Mega Man 1 on the PlayStation Network. The problem? It's impossible for you to get. To celebrate the very-late PS3 release of Mega Man 9 in Japan, Capcom is holding a contest for those that purchase the game. Winners will be able to get either a free t-shirt, or a downloadable version of Rockman Complete Works. We're certain Capcom won't restrict the release of Rockman to just this Japan-only contest. We wouldn't be surprised to see each and every Mega Man game released on PS1 to get its inevitable PSN re-release. Let's not forget, Capcom promised a lot of downloads this year ...

  • Capcom: Resident Evil franchise nears 40 million units, SFII still best all-time seller

According to Capcom's investor relations website, the Resident Evil franchise has clocked nearly 40 million units sold since the series inception in 1996. The next closest to that is the (much older) Mega Man franchise, which has managed to move 28 million. Behind Mega Man is the Street Fighter franchise with 27 million to its name.Even though Street Fighter can only lay claim to the third best franchise for Capcom, Ryu and friends can still boast about one thing: Street Fighter II for the Super Nintendo, which released waaaaay back in 1992, remains the company's all-time best seller, pushing 6.3 million copies. That said, Street Fighter II had better watch its back, as Resident Evil 5 has already sold 4.4 million copies since it released in March, nearly surpassing the 4.9 million copies of Capcom's second best seller, Resident Evil 2.[Via Gamasutra]Source - Capcom | Total Sales UnitsSource - Capcom | Platinum Titles

Offering a welcome distraction from the lights and sounds of E3 this June will be the ... lights and sounds of Video Games Live. Not to be confused with the annual event's newly re-embraced discord, the musical performance aims to strike a more harmonious chord with attendees when the show takes the stage at LA's Greek Theater on June 4.Serving as E3's closing ceremony, the concert will include selections from such games as Chrono Trigger, Mega Man and Final Fantasy, as well as possible attendance by some "very special guests." Tickets are available through pre-sale for between $25 and $70. And for those unwilling to make the trek to E3, or for avid listeners with an unhealthy appetite for video game tuneage, a second performance alongside July's Comic Con in San Diego is also planned, promising "different material and different special guests."

Thanks for sticking with us throughout the day. We know how hard Mondays can be, so we thought you might appreciate this totally not safe for work Mega Man 2 rap by The Adventures of Duane and Brando. It's hilarious, addictive and even gives you helpful tips for the next time you play through the game -- on your iPhone, perhaps. It even includes some wonderfully remixed versions of the music from each of the levels. And if there's one thing Mega Man fans agree on, it's that Mega Man II had the best music of the series. Enjoy the video. You'll find it after the break.

  • World of Warcraft iGoogle theme

More and more people (myself included) are starting to use iGoogle as their homepage, because it's incredibly useful. There's all sorts of widgets you can use to customize your homepage, from useful things like the weather and a feed of the top news stories, to goofy things like games and videos. I started using it awhile ago, so I was excited to hear about the addition of World of Warcraft iGoogle theme. The theme is pretty basic as far as its appearance goes: A little art on top, a little art on the bottom, and text colored to match. No absurd bells and whistles or major distractions. The cool thing this theme does, like a few other iGoogle themes, is it changes depending on the time of day in your region. When I first put this theme on my homepage earlier today it had a somewhat orange tinge to it all, the art being what I believe is Durotar. Orcs, all of that sort of thing. As of my writing this, it's only 2 PM Central and it's already switched over to the dark blue of the Lich King. It seems a bit early to be swapping to what appears to be the nighttime version of the theme, and it's somewhat depressing in an odd sort of way.

We've seen Capcom's beloved blue bomber tackle misanthropic Robot Masters on a single plane. We've seen him bust hard-hatted Mets in 3D with the Mega Man Legends series. Graphic designer Peter Sjostrand recently introduced a bold dimensional direction for the series to exploit: Both 2D and 3D. Or is it neither? We can't be sure -- it's been a while since we last read Flatland.Rather than try and explain the mind-expanding physics featured in Sjostrand's Mega Man 2.5D, we direct your attention to the demo video posted after the break. It's got kind of a Paper Mario thing going on, only with more automatonical violence and less, well, paper. However, considering Sjostrand's background as an animator and not a developer, we doubt this is actual gameplay video. We're really sad, now. Probably will be all day.[Via The Tanooki]

If there's one thing that Mega Man 9 proved to us, it's that we desperately need a Mega Man 10. Seriously, Mega Man 9 might have done more harm than good, because at least before we never held out hope for such a retro-revival. Now, having tasted the greatness, we need more. That's where Mega Man character designer and Capcom bigwig Keiji Inafune comes into the picture. During a recent interview with 1UP, he commented on the possibility of another downloadable Mega Man title, stating that Mega Man 9 came based on "our users' feedback." He went on to elaborate by saying the users "indicated that they wanted to see it again, so if we can continue to find ways to involve users and use their feedback to evolve the game, I think we can go on to continue to make MM10, MM11, and so on. The main point is how and if we can continue to incorporate user feedback into the creation of the game."Mr. Inafune, just do it already. Mega Man 9 had to have sold truckloads, and you all got more from us on the DLC, so what's the deal? Personally, we're not willing to settle for any less than a new 8-bit Mega Man each year. Yesterday's very awesome trailer for a Mega Man movie got us thinking. What game property would you like to see made into a film? Hollywood has tried to do it several times and pretty much failed through and through, but with what source material would you like them to try to make a competent film? A Legend of Zelda movie? Would you like to see F-Zero: The Movie? Well, out with it!
