  • Mythos crew addresses the issue of bird-men

    At this stage of the game, it really feels like we've culled absolutely every bit of information that Flagship Studios has to give about their upcoming dungeon crawler Mythos. We've already found out about the in-game mall, email system, group content, mini-games, the class differentiation, and what color sherbet Max Schaefer prefers on a particularly hot day.As it turns out however, there's always more minutiae to mull over! In the latest interview, the Flagship boys are asked about a bunch of things that you likely didn't even think to ask in the first place. What's going to be done about farmers, griefers, and spawn campers? (Something) How awesome will crafting be? (So awesome!) Will there be a bird race? (Like Big Bird? Maybe...) And as to the elusive question of whether and when the open beta is going to start, they still wouldn't give a solid answer. While that disappoints a little bit, at least their release date isn't set in mud, because we all know what that meant.

    We've written once or twice about the upcoming free-to-play game action-MMO Mythos. It will rock you, sock you, completely demolish you and keep you coming back for another round of its point-and-click gameplay. Well, that's the theory, anyway. Can any game ever live up to all its hype? As Miguel Lopez points out in his Mythos preview, you have four races, but there's really not that much difference between them. Eventually, you'll run out of quests, and the only thing that will keep you coming back is the prospect of more fairly similar dungeon crawling.Mythos shows the most creativity in its classes. Your characters must choose between one of three classes, but the talent trees can turn them into almost any variant on those you can think of. Want your caster to tank and melee? You can do that. Want your gadgeteer to let his pets do the fighting? Entirely up to you. Your character can be uniquely yours in every respect. This might come in handy when you meet someone else in the FFA PvP world of the Shadowlands. They won't have any idea what you can do... and you won't know anything about them, either. Will Mythos have the staying power of Diablo II? That's a tough call, but the developers at Flagship Studios are definitely hoping its addictive gameplay, casual setting, humor, and low price (can't beat free) will give them a hit after their miss with Hellgate: London.

    It is a great time to be a MMO gamer. We have a catalogue of spectacular games readily available that can satisfy any gaming palate. Granted, some gems shine brighter than others but there is no doubt that it is indeed a good time to be a fan of MMO games. But, as the song goes, "the times, they are a changin'". Not only are we being presented with shiny, new games with graphical muscle enough to conquer small countries but we are also blessed with new gameplay mechanics designed to streamline and enhance our gaming experience. Are we witnessing the birth of a new era? Or will we talk about the failed gaming revolution of 2008?

  • New classes definitely coming to Mythos

    IGN has a preview of Mythos up (littered with as much gameplay footage as the game has loot) that takes a pretty good look at the upcoming Flagship Studios Diablo-like title. An interesting subject that the preview touches on is the addition of future classes. The only bit of information we're given is that the new classes will focus on some of the weapon-types that have no optimal class already in-game for them. We've got a couple guesses as to what sort of classes we may see, so buckle up!

  • Hellgate: London goes to Korea, makes it big

    So do you remember when Hellgate: London wanted you to give it a second chance? Well apparently it found a new Korean boyfriend. Launching in beta-mode last January 15th, Hellgate has since officially launched on February 22nd to critical success. Apparently, in the two weeks following the February launch, Hellgate: London managed to grab over a million subscribers. By Flagship's count, that makes Hellgate: London the most successful Korean launch in the last three years; quite the difference from its state-side grand opening last year.Apparently all the buzz started in Korea during the January 15th beta, when gamers at PC Cafes picked up on the title. Ever since then it has been garnering a strong audience. We're happy to see the game has found a home, as hopefully this means Flagship can bankroll some more people into the Mythos team to make that game even cooler.[via Joystiq]

  • WRUP: A long week's weekend

    Happy Friday! Maybe it's just because sickness set in at the beginning of this week, but for some reason the past five days have seemed unreasonably long, so the break of the weekend is a welcome sight today. Friday also happens to be the day where we ask: What aRe yoU Playing in this wide and wonderful world of MMOs?Kyle Horner says he's been enjoying himself in Ikariam lately -- he says it's a free-to-play browser based game that's "kind of like Civ," which makes it a must-check out. Michael Zenke tells us he's got Mythos and WoW on the docket for this weekend, along with another super secret game that we can't quite tell you about yet. But our own Tateru Nino takes the cake. Here's what she says she has planned for this weekend: "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Half Life 2 (original recipe), Team Fortress 2, UFO: Afterlight, The Bard's Tale, Imperium Romanum, City of Heroes, LotRO, The Longest Journey (original game), Two Worlds, Bioshock, Dream of Mirror Online, Neverwinter Nights 2, plus time in SL."   • Hellgate: London would like a second chance

    We all know that Hellgate: London didn't exactly have the best of launches; actually it had a very terrible launch. The biggest problem was probably all the bugs in the game, which more often than not were responsible for regular client crashes among other game-ending glitches. This sort of thing tends to kill games forever, but Hellgate: London has been sticking it out over the past several months and things have actually gotten better -- at least as far as the bugs and additional content goes. So now Flagship Studios is hoping players will come back and give the game a second (or possibly third) chance.From what we've heard and seen of these updates, it sounds like Flagship isn't pulling any legs here -- the game really has gotten better. Even so, we really have to wonder if that's enough to bring previously-scorned players back to the game, as many of them have no doubt moved on since last year. Maybe it would be wise to drop the price on the game a tad and offer some sort of incentive for players to come back or try the game for the first time. Mythos might be the perfect conduit to spotlight these new improvements; if Flagship can think up a clever way to do it.

  • Interview with Flagship's Max Schaefer

    On their latest video podcast, the folks at 1UP had a chat with Flagship Studios' COO and executive producer of Mythos, Max Schaefer. He talks a little about Mythos' raison d'être as a sort of technology demo for last year's action MMO, Hellgate: London. It's taken on a life of its own since then to become the kinder, lighter action MMO, brighter and more just plain fun. In keeping with their more social goal for Mythos, there is full guild support, and they'll be adding in email, minigames, group-oriented content and, yes, an item mall. Following the lead of the Asian casual game market, Mythos is free to download, free to play, and though you may want to buy certain things to help you along the way at their item mall (though nothing overpowering -- you won't find the best swords or armor at the item mall), you will be able to see and do everything without paying a penny.Schaefer calls this new philosophy "Triple-A casual" -- top flight production values using the latest tech, but keeping development time short and focusing on the fun. We've been hearing a lot about Mythos lately; here's hoping they start their open beta soon so that we can all play.

    (Because, you know, we came in like a lamb.) Yes, March is over and we are a full week into the fourth month of 2008 -- time flies when you're having fun with MMO games. It's Friday, so it's time once again for us to query: What aRe yoU Playing?Massively's own Kyle Horner says he's back in Mythos as a level 11 Cyclops Bloodletter, and has also been digging on Whirled lately, "creating rooms" or whatever you do in there. I've found myself back in World of Warcraft, doing the Sunwell dailies on my main, while also leveling my 62 Hunter up to the level cap (R6V2 is also getting a good bit of play from me -- love hunting terrorists). And Krystalle Voecks, co-lead at Massively, is still playing EVE -- she recently joined up with EVE University and is still mining and dabbling in PvP and missions.So tell us: what are you playing in the world of MMOs? Well, the unlikely place of YouTube may be the answer for you.We were surprised to find that Scapes, Hellgate: London's Community Manager was answering both HGL and Mythos questions in the comments of their YouTube videos.For example, if you go to take a look at the new Patch 1.2 trailer, you will find comments about the new Single Player patch as well as the difference between Video development and Game development.So if you have a burning question for Flagship Studios, go sign into your YouTube account and leave a comment.   • Mythos beta journal, part 2

    Mythos, the Diablo II-inspired action-adventure MMO from Flagship Studios, nears open beta after months of tantalizing peeks and glimpses into the closed beta. Flagship Studios, founded by members of the original Diablo II development team, released their first game last fall, the Armageddon-themed Hellgate: London. Mythos returns them to their fast-paced fantasy roots, adding a rich game-world, crafting, innovative classes and both solo and group content to the winning Diablo II formula.Raisu writes in the second part of his Mythos Beta Journal about getting started in Mythos and the difference between the difficulty levels in the game. That's an astounding thing in itself, an MMO where you can choose the difficulty at which you play. Normal is normal; most dungeons will be a moderate challenge to you. Elite means they will be fairly tough, and you won't get as much cash for your treasure from merchants. Hardcore means you get just one life -- once you die, you're gone. Finally, Shadowlands-Only means you inhabit that strange mirror realm where you may fight other people -- and unlike visitors from the Light realms, you can never leave. If you love your Massively Multiplayer games fast, casual, with piles of loot, high individuality among characters, and free, you're likely looking forward to Mythos as much as we.

  • Mythos Zone 3 newsletter presages Open Beta

    The most recent Beta newsletter for Flagship Studios' free-to-play fantasy title Mythos has arrived in our mailbox, and it comes bearing fantastic news. They've just rolled out Zone 3, one of the last pieces of content they wanted tested before going to an open Beta phase. That means if you haven't already had the chance to play, you'll soon be able to participate in their stress test/open experience.Of course, the newsletter was about more than just that. It also had some lore pieces, describing the fury of the Stagkin and the grandeur of Stonehill village. Be especially sure that you check out the Zone 3 patch notes. Features for the drop include: The re-introduction of PvP. Dueling. An in-game mail system. A brand-new crafting system. And numerous bug fixes and tweaks.

    Ask any gamer, hardcore, softcore, nerdcore ... whatever, if they have a particular game in their gaming history that holds a special place in their heart. Their eyes might swell with tears as they wax romantic over the joys, perils, challenges and victories of their beloved game from days gone by. Then they'll stare off into space as their mind swims in fond memories. Maybe not but you get the picture. Most of us have a special game from our past. For me, and for many out there, that game was Diablo II. I could go on and write an entire piece dedicated to the grandfather of action RPGs. It was and still is that good. Wait ... still is? The game is nearly eight years old and still finds relevance in today's crowded, over-hyped, multi-billion dollar gaming industry full of failed blockbusters and strange game announcements? How can this be? I'll tell you why: Diablo II presented a game full of refined mechanics and gameplay that is still being used today and while it wasn't a true MMO, many of those conventions are used in modern-day MMO development. The mechanics were good but after eight years can some refinement and advancement be too much to ask? As much as I loved, and still love, Diablo II, I'm also anxious to move on.

  • The man in charge of Mythos gets interviewed

    There's not much more to know about Mythos at this point, but CVG has gotten a few good chunks of information out of the guy in charge of the upcoming massively game -- Max Schaefer. One such revelation is that the Mythos team will be aiming for expansions every three months and that said expansions will be available to everyone. That's a sensible decision considering their business model profits from players sticking with the game or at least coming back for new content and paying for the extra stuff.Aside from the standard Mythos matters, there's an interesting quote from Max, "PC gaming isn't going anywhere until people stop having PCs. It's up to developers and publishers to keep it fresh and keep bringing creative, entertaining games to market."We're glad that somebody out there has a rational response to the PC gaming death question. Especially from Flagship Studios, who's first title wasn't exactly a major hit. If things pan out the way we think they will, though, Mythos is going to have a pretty dedicated player-base.

    Raph Koster, president of Areae, and Sean Riley, Lead Programmer, held a panel the final day of GDC '08 called 'Reinventing MMOs: a Metaplace 'antemortem'', which was all about dissecting why the concept of MMOs needs updating. Going in, I was hoping for insight, which I got, but wasn't expecting a lot of technical talk, which I also got.And the takeaway I got from this session is this: Koster's doing some good, forward-thinking work, but Metaplace doesn't really shine for me just yet. Whoever said it probably didn't have MMOs in mind, but it's certainly true that there are many quality games out there that are completely free to download and play. Here's a list of the top 5 free massively multiplayer online games.Now, to pre-empt the equally massive glut of angry emails and comments I'm sure to receive for leaving someone's favorite title off of this list, I'm going to state right up front that these choices are based completely on the number of times I've heard them mentioned with favor by a variety of different sources. I make no guarantees of having played any of these MMOs, so they're not necessarily my personal picks. But if I keep hearing people mention them in different contexts, there must be something to them. In short, these games are popular for a reason, and if you haven't played them, you might find that they're worth your download. We begin after the jump!

    For those of you teetering on the brink of playing Mythos, unsure if it's worth your time, take a look at the newest gameplay movie from Flagship, which features the chaotic melée action that makes this still-in-beta MMO so much fun.In addition to watching a little Gremlin drop some indiscriminate justice on the local wildlife, this video also previews an upcoming 3rd zone still to be added to the beta test: an icy, Wintry environment that looks as good as the previous two zones. I have to say, even though the gameplay is unvaried, it's still the perfect antidote to the sometimes overly-strategic and by-the-math gameplay of longer-lived titles -- nothing but hack 'n' slash, and who doesn't love that?[Via computerandvideogames.com]

  • Mythos' Executive Producer gets interviewed

    Over at Stropp's World, there's a very good interview with Max Schaefer -- Executive Producer for Mythos. To clarify; Mythos is a top-down Diablo-style massively game that's been in beta testing for a very long time now.Upon release Flagship Studios plans for Mythos to be free-to-play with an RMT model. In the interview itself, Max discusses their decision to use an RMT system. Citing the developer's desire to provide players with a "robust free experience" but offer attractive options through RMT to obtain extra luxuries and ways to improve their adventure. One thing we were happy to take from the interview is that Flagship knows better than to just sell the best items in their game -- meaning the only way to get the best loot in Mythos is to kill stuff. Beyond the RMT issue (which some may or may not like, but hey the game's free right?) there is a lot of talk about future features. A crafting system is on the way, although not very much is known about it right now. There will be basic PvP dueling and the Shadow World; a series of portals throughout the regular game world, which lead to an exact mirror world where PvP is everywhere. Also, other modes like group vs. group, Capture the Flag-type and other non-player killing competitions are in the works. We have to admit that the Shadow World concept interests us, although it's not very surprising to hear.[Thanks, Stropp]

    There's a contest going on at MMOCrunch until Monday January 21st at 10:00 am PST, where two lucky people can each win a Mythos beta invite. Now, we know what you're probably thinking, "These beta invites are everywhere!" and you're right, Mythos beta invites are practically falling out of the sky. However, some readers out there haven't gotten in on the chopping, hacking, slashing action yet and as fellow hack n' slash junkies we feel for them.It's a good thing people in this beta are so giving, because if you haven't tried Mythos yet you really should. We do feel that we should warn you, however. If you're the type of person who gets incredibly addicted to pointing, clicking and subsequently killing/maiming/exploding all sorts of enemies you might want to think twice. Many of you surely have families, friends and concentrated doses of the free-to-play monster may be detrimental to your life.For those of you not sure what all the fuss is about, check this video out.

    After another night spent raiding and ultimately losing the roll for some highly sought-after piece of gear for the umpteenth time, have you ever stopped and asked yourself, "Isn't there a better way they could do this?" The answer, if Stropp of Stropp's World is to be believed, may have been found by those crazy folks at Flagship Studios. Mythos, their new Diablo-killer, will be using a loot system that guarantees all players will be rewarded for their contributions to a battle. Upon slaying a foe, each player will have a separate loot screen from which they can pick up their reward. There's no rolling, no ninjaing, and (god willing) no whining.Stropp himself wonders whether this sort of system could be adopted by other mainstream MMOs as a way to eliminate all the drama that normally surrounds the whole looting process. To me the issue seems fairly straight-forward. In a more casual game like Mythos, where the gear is really secondary to the experience, a loot system that equitably distributes loot is the easiest way to keep gamers geared and happy. But when it comes to more serious MMOs like WoW or EQ2, the gear is really an end to itself. If ever player got an epic every time they did a raid encounter, people would have finished out the content months ago. Still, it's an interest thought that'll get you thinking about how future MMOs could improve the process.
