Motorola XT316 passes second round at FCC, this time endowed with AT&T 3G
It feels like we've been down this road before, but this time we may be lead to a different destination. Motorola's XT316 went through its paces at the FCC a couple months ago with Chinese 3G bands, which indicated there was seemingly no hope of the Android device seeing the light of day in the US of A. This time around, the smaller version of the Droid Pro's been given the federal go-ahead with AT&T-compatible 3G bands. Everything else appears to be the same, right down to the identical drawing of the handset's dimensions. Does this mean the XT316 will be in stock at your local store anytime soon? We can't say with certainty, but at least the government won't be standing in your way.
HTC ChaCha seemingly confirmed for AT&T, courtesy of leaked press shot
It got its passport stamped by the FCC just a few days ago, but the HTC ChaCha has apparently donned its AT&T costume and already had a photo shoot to commemorate the occasion. The leaked press shot above shows the same cutesy phone with the logo of its future carrier on top, but look even closer and you'll see a few other minor changes when compared to the European version launched at MWC this year. First, the Facebook button at the bottom of the phone is slightly modified, though we're not sure if this means there'll be any different features or functions to go along with it. In addition, a few other keys have been renamed or rearranged, and the screenshot shows a date of July 17; this could be the planned launch date or mere coincidence, but it's difficult to discern at this point. Our skeptical minds aren't certain this is the real dance yet, but at least the song appears to be next up on the playlist.
Motorola Droid 3 official in China under Milestone 3 moniker, packs 4-inch qHD display
The Droid 3 is upon us! Well, it is if you live in China and don't mind calling it the Milestone 3. A new XT883 model has just been made official by Motorola during China Telecom's CDMA Summit, touting the tagline "the third Milestone" and a new five-row slideout QWERTY keyboard. The salient specs include a 4-inch touchscreen with qHD (540 x 960) resolution, a dual-core Tegra 2 processor capable of driving 1080p video recording, an 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, up to 32GB of built-in storage, and of course, Android 2.3 as the shipping OS. A pretty compelling package, we think you'll agree. It's coming to China this summer, though Moto could still be crafty enough to squeeze the US launch in before actual units start shipping to Yao Ming's homeland. Because, well, who's ever heard of a Milestone coming before a Droid? %Gallery-126585% Update: Appears this handset is sporting an OMAP 4430 processor, not Tegra 2 as we had first assumed.
Dual-screen LG Android phone shows up in the wild, poses more questions than it answers
A little shindig held by Orange in the UK has unearthed a T-Mobile-branded LG device that we've never seen before. It features a display of moderate size and resolution, which slides up to reveal a split QWERTY keyboard and yet another color display. The hidden visualizer is apparently used as an app-launching shortcut repository, though other details remain frustratingly light. Kineto Wireless were the company to bring this unannounced LG handset to the party, along with a bunch of others intended for the US market, and the rep on hand dropped the name Flip II to the Pocket-lint sleuths. There's also the possibility that what we're eyeing is the LG Maxx Q, which has popped up on a recently leaked T-Mo USA roadmap, though that Android 1.6 wallpaper could mean that this is just an aged prototype that never saw the light of retail day. HTC's ChaCha shuffles its way through the FCC's clutches with support for AT&T 3G
We know you've all been dreaming of the HTC ChaCha's potential launch on AT&T -- well, okay, maybe not, but we're sure a good handful are for sure -- and if you're lucky, that day could be soon given today's FCC blessing. In case it's slipped your mind, HTC's ChaCha was officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress this year with a 600MHz CPU -- that's been bumped to 800MHz since we first saw it -- a very winsome and useful QWERTY keypad, a cute little dedicated Facebook button, and of course AT&T 3G bands are now on tap. Sadly, while the FCC does reveal test results, interesting photos of labs studded with foam cones, and even device sticker placement, they don't tell us when a device will launch or what it'll ultimately cost. All that good stuff will be hand delivered to you by us, so keep an eye out and we'll let you know the whole story as soon as we do.
Nokia brings Symbian^3 to China Mobile, officially announces T7-00 and 702T
Though its visits have been few and far between, Nokia has had a presence on China Mobile for many years. The carrier's never been blessed, however, with any TD-SCDMA devices powered by Symbian^3 -- until now. Two new flagship models, known as the T7-00 and 702T, were announced by both companies and slated for Q3 release. If both phones seem oddly familiar, there's a very good reason why: the T7-00, as we originally speculated, is a variant of the Nokia N8 with a lower-quality 8 megapixel EDoF sensor; the 702T is the TD-SCDMA version of the E6, though the keyboard has been altered slightly to include larger Function and Ctrl buttons, allowing for easier switching between Chinese and English input. Both phones will be pre-loaded with the Anna update, and could be a big factor in helping Nokia hit its goal of selling 150 million Symbian devices before the OS goes the way of the Dodo. Samsung Indulge moseys to Cricket, $330 price ensures it won't leave your sight
Not to be outdone by MetroPCS, Cricket now offers a Samsung Indulge for its customers who demand a taste of Android's better half. While the $330 price is sure to test the commitment of some, the device stands out among its underpowered Huawei, Sanyo and LG peers -- it's also the only game in Crickettown if you want to combine El Goog's OS with a physical keyboard. Like its MetroPCS counterpart, customers will find a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, a 3.5-inch HVGA LCD display and a 3 megapixel camera -- although unlike the former, Cricket doesn't yet offer LTE service. Taking into consideration this is a zero-commitment affair where $55 a month brings unlimited voice, text and data, it's not a bad proposition -- though, your heart is likely to race if the phone gets dropped. HTC ChaCha dances its way onto Vodafone, available now
If you've come to the realization that status updates are far more important than actual phone calls, you're going to be very excited to hear that the HTC ChaCha -- the Facebook phone that's not a "Facebook Phone" -- is now available on Vodafone starting at the low, low cost of zilch. There's not a lot to distinguish this phone from other Sense-powered devices, with the exception of some additional social network functionality integrated into the UI. Oh, and there's that little F button below the keyboard with a light that pulsates anytime you're doing something that could be shared with the entire world. Top it all off with Gingerbread, an HVGA display on a 2.6-inch screen, 512MB RAM, and a 600MHz CPU, and you've got a device that should reasonably handle all your social tendencies. Pantech Crossover review
Time to ditch the pull-ups, because Pantech's a big kid now. It's hard to fathom that the company responsible for hits like the Zoolander-ish C300, Helio Ocean and dual-sliding Duo is only now -- after five long years -- taking a chance at the Android market in the US. Certainly its long-time partnership with AT&T is finally looking to pay off in a big way, as the network introduces the appropriately-named Crossover. The carrier's been starving for a decent physical QWERTY to add to its (fortunately) blooming Android lineup, so seeing Pantech step up to the plate and fill the void should come as a huge relief. Though it's serving up monoliths in Korea that feature 1.5GHz dual-core processors and other outlandish specs, Pantech looks to be starting its stateside tour with a less-risky investment: at $70 with a 2-year agreement, its modest first impression appears targeted toward first-time smartphone buyers. Is it worth dropping a Grant and a Jackson to adopt the Pantech Crossover for the next two years? Read on to find out.
QWERTY wallet shows off your keyboard appreciation, pays homage to The Shining
Now die-hard QWERTY enthusiasts never have to be away from the keys. This black leather billfold pledges allegiance to the keys with an embossed replica of a QWERTY keyboard wrapping around its exterior, while its interior rocks the phrase made famous by Jack Nicholson in The Shining: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." It may be a touch less flamboyant than Samuel L. Jackson's "Bad Mother *&%$#@" wallet, but it's no less iconic. T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide gets pictured with Gingerbread, may debut next month
We didn't know it was possible, but Mr. Blurrycam just got out-Blurrycam'd. After getting some quality hands-on time with the FCC this week, the T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide had a brief photo shoot showing off a few of its assets. The images, provided by one of BGR's sources, give us a brief look at the device's keyboard and some of its software specs. The myTouch 4G Slide appears to be running Android 2.3.4 -- the same version of Gingerbread found on the Nexus S -- and the latest iteration of HTC Sense UI. This source also confirmed an 8 megapixel camera and teased that the phone runs "as smoothly as the HTC Sensation" and the screen "isn't much to write home about." We hear that the myTouch 4G Slide is penciled in for the first half of July, and looks to be a mighty fine QWERTY-slide option within T-Mobile's Android stable. Or, as good as one can look given the circumstances.
HTC Doubleshot slides through the FCC
Rumor has it that the HTC Doubleshot, aka the MyTouch 4G Slide, will be popping up in T-Mo shops across the country on July 6th. But, before consumers can turn in that paper they've been stackin' for one, the handset has to make it by The Man. Well, the FCC just cleared an HTC phone with a QWERTY keypad and a 1700MHz radio inside, and there's a good chance it just so happens to be that Sensed-up, dual-core Gingerbread slider we've been waiting for. Sadly, regulators don't have any teardown pics for you to ogle but, hey, we've got an FCC tag -- that's gotta count for something... right?
Sharp gets mysterious, may bring Android-based QWERTY to AT&T?
We've heard nothing but crickets from Sharp in the US after the release of the FX, a snoozer released on AT&T last summer. Nothing fresh has made its way into stores in a very long time -- unless you count the Aquos 007SH clamshell that hit the FCC last week -- so our interest was piqued after examining a new image that shows off an unnamed QWERTY slider phone from the same company. It reminds us a lot of the FX, actually, except with much smoother edges. We were also intrigued to discover that the mystery handset has a set of standard Android buttons, which would be a welcome upgrade for Sharp. The source responsible for the image mentioned it's bound for North America and uses 850 / 1900 3G connectivity; if the phone hits the US, the bands indicate it would become the latest addition to AT&T's Android lineup. We're sure the Pantech Crossover wouldn't mind a QWERTY-sliding friend to sit next to.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro now available for pre-order in the UK
Outside of a bit of bootloader talk, we haven't heard much about Sony Ericsson's Xperia Pro since it made its debut at Mobile World Congress in February. The company's now gotten things rolling again, however, and has made the phone available for pre-order in the UK. As you can see above, it'll set you back £349.99 SIM-free (or roughly $575), and it should be available sometime next month. Not pictured above is one of the phone's main selling points: a sliding QWERTY keyboard -- but don't worry, you can get a good look at it in our hands-on. [Thanks, Amarjit]
MSI X370 to be upgraded to AMD E-450 Fusion APU, we go hands-on
AMD is presently detailing a rather extensive overhaul of its Fusion APU line here at Computex, including the promise of Llano-based computers becoming available in the next few weeks. One of the devices that's set to get the upgrade treatment is MSI's skinny X370 laptop, a 13-incher with 1366 x 768 resolution and the current-gen 1.6GHz E-350 Zacate processor inside. The intel about its future upgrade to a 1.65GHz E-450 chip came from Notebook Italia and was confirmed for us by folks at both AMD and MSI's booths here at the show. We don't yet have the full details on what the next E-450 processor will be like exactly, but we gathered together a gallery of pictures of the X370, which recently started shipping for $579. HTC Merge now shipping from US Cellular, LG Genesis arriving June 9th
We know many US Cellular customers have been waiting for this day, because after missing its rumored launch, the HTC Merge has arrived and is ready to meet your pocket. As expected, it's selling for $250 on contract (before a $100 mail-in rebate) and marks the CDMA provider's first Android world phone. To refresh your memory, this QWERTY slider features a 3.8-inch WVGA touchscreen, a 5 megapixel camera and runs Froyo. Alongside this release, the carrier announced it's getting the LG Genesis on June 9th. If you'll remember, this is the refashioned enV Touch that US Cellular picked up after Verizon dropped the ball. It's also going for $250 on contract (before a $100 mail-in rebate) and true to its legacy, the clamshell provides a full keyboard. Priced equally, it appears QWERTY-lovers on US Cellular have quite a decision ahead. What a happy conundrum, indeed. Follow the break for the PR heralding these arrivals.
Pantech's first US Android comes to AT&T as the Crossover, launches June 5 for $70
Pantech and AT&T have been BFFs for several years, but the two companies have never taken things to the next level -- until now. Alluded to by an AT&T exec earlier this month, the Crossover will be the Korean manufacturer's first attempt at Android in the US and will be on sale June 5th for $70 with contract. We can't help but notice the similarities between the device you see above and the P8000 that cleared the FCC a few months back, but now we actually have some cold hard specs to go along with it. Packing a modest offering of Froyo, 3.1-inch touchscreen display, 3 megapixel camera, and a less-than-stellar 600MHz CPU, it's no Atrix 4G or Vega Racer. Despite the less-than-stellar features, it should fill an empty niche in AT&T's lineup quite well as a durable QWERTY slider with textured back and rubberized corners. You only have a few days to decide which kind of shock tests you'll put your new phone through, and you may find the press release (found after the break) to be full of great ideas.
Nokia E6 available to pre-order in UK, still on track for June release
The pre-ordering frenzy already began for the Nokia E6 in other parts of Europe, but the baton finally landed in the hands of UK Symbian enthusiasts. The sleek and sexy portrait QWERTY is up for grabs SIM-free on the official site for £349. We imagine this may not be enough to entice the average Joe, but then again, any folks interested in doing a pre-order have likely been eyeing this device for quite some time now. We can understand the intrigue, as this is an ideal upgrade for E71 or E72 owners: it's the same overall design, but adds Symbian Anna and a 2.46-inch capacitive touchscreen that employs the same pixel density (326ppi) as the iPhone 4's Retina Display. If pre-orders aren't your style, we're expecting it to land in stores sometime near the end of June. But if you just have to be the first kiddo on the block to own an E6, move onward to the source link to start the pre-order.
Omnio's WOWKeys keyboard now shipping, ready to dock your iPhone for $100 (video)
Remember that Omnio WOWKeys keyboard we mentioned back in November -- the one that brings full-sized QWERTY functionality to your iPhone or iPod Touch? Well, it's now available for your consumption. Once you lock your iDevice into the port on the right, it will automatically begin charging and syncing with iTunes. From there, you can start typing text directly into your handheld, or use the keyboard's twelve hotkeys to control music playback functions, turn off the display, or switch between PC and iPhone mode. You can even use your mobile's touchscreen as a trackpad for your Mac or PC, though you'll need an app like Mobile Mouse Pro to do so. Basically, it's an EeeKeyboard. Hyperkin's PS3 Remotext weds Blu-ray remote with keypad controller, DualShock 3 frets
With the PSN finally back up, it's time for important things -- you know, messaging your buds for a Black Ops pwning spree or hitting up Netflix. Hyperkin's Remotext for PS3 wants to help you get back into action with its hybrid remote / controller / chatpad. It features a slide-out Blu-ray remote panel, QWERTY keypad -- better positioned than SONY's offering -- and two analog nubs with a near-complete set of gaming controls. There's no sign of rear triggers, and Bluetooth connectivity is absent too, but it does come with a wireless USB receiver and rechargeable battery so you're not left scrounging between the couch cushions for AAs. Although we're doubtful it'll prove functional for gaming, it could be appropriate for PS3s that spend more time sitting at the movies than getting their Move on. The DualShock 3 shouldn't have much to worry about, but we'll find out at E3, when the Remotext will be officially showcased. There's no word on pricing or availability yet, but if you're dying for more in the meantime, a press release is beyond the break.
