Screen Grabs: Nikon D60 served up with standard lens, chocolate frosting

Ace of Cake's Duff Goldman and his Charm City Cakes shop pulled out all the f-stops to recreate a (presumably) delicious Nikon D60-shaped pastry for one family to celebrate their photographer father's birthday. The first trial ended up being too small, but instead of turning it into a point-and-shoot or micro four thirds they scrapped that iteration altogether. There's some impressive details here, but best of all (and unfortunately not seen in the gallery below) is the picture of another birthday cake in the viewfinder. Seriously, the only thing that could make this better is if they baked it with a longer lens.[Thanks, Susie]

We didn't happen to spot Nelly's shiny new BlackBerry Storm on last night's Gossip Girl, but we did see that cast-wide Verizon contract rubbed in our faces again. Verizon's newest non-cellphone (that'd be the Hub) made a brief appearance at the tail end of the episode to inform Lily van der Woodsen that her dearest Serena had reverted to her old carefree ways and hopped a private jet to Spain. Hope she took a worldphone over there, else making that "I'm here!" call is going to be just a wee bit difficult in GSM world.

One thing's for sure -- the producers of Life sure know how to weave modern day technology into the storyline. Just a few weeks back we saw a Time Capsule with all sorts of sordid evidence, and this week we witnessed a Nikon D90 + SB-600 combo nearly being an accessory to murder. But look, if this thing is good enough to shoot dead people, it's probably good enough to photograph your cousin's bar mitzvah.

We had a feeling that cast-wide Verizon contract on Gossip Girl would eventually lead to at least one BlackBerry Storm showing up, and sure enough, it's Nelly Yuki proving our assumptions correct. Ms. Yuki made good use of her touchscreen 'Berry too, showing off her Yale acceptance email to her closest pals and one fuming Blair Waldorf. Meanwhile, all the other rich girls get stuck with Verizon's free-on-contract lineup -- what's up with that?

We'll be honest: we haven't seen 24 for many a season now, but, thanks to a few sweet tips, we decided to take a look at a recent episode, and bam! Right after a nefarious-looking doctor suffocates an elderly gentlemen in his hospital bed, the evil chap shoots over to the nurses' station on the down low to download some hyper-rad schematics from the terminal. So... he whips out his OQO (not the device's first appearance on Screen Grabs), plugs 'er into the nearby Mac mini (ditto) and goes about his suspicious, suspicious business. Dude, we gotta get to this magical hospital, where technology rules and the "doctors" are plotting stuff. Jack into some more evidence after the break. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

While Reese got grilled and Crews got one step closer to figuring out who stabbed him in the back decades ago, Robert Stark happened upon what Captain Tidwell thought was a small computer. Clearly, someone failed to tip him off on the fact that a Time Capsule isn't in any way a Mac mini. Ah well, at least some gal finally convinced him to get a haircut.

Screen Grabs: Fringe's Olivia Dunham investigates zombies with Samsung BlackJack II

Given the scrutiny which Barack Obama underwent, you'd expect Fringe's Olivia Dunham -- who's responsible for matters far more serious than "fixing economies" and "creating domestic stimulus packages" -- to use some sort of highly specialized Sectera Edge for work. But given that AT&T sponsors her program, we suppose the FBI has made an exception here. As you can see, she (and her partners) were recently caught wielding Samsung's BlackJack II (and getting perfect reception on AT&T) while investigating the spontaneous morphing of humans. Turns out, this nifty little live video trick helped lead to some resolution in her life, but we'll spare you the spoilers.%Gallery-44358%
Screen Grabs: OQO Model 2+ makes lunchtime appearance on 'Lie To Me'

Oh Brendan Hines, you're so dreamy with that scruffy beard, curly hair that just can't be tamed, and propensity to whip out random gadgets at inappropriate times on Lie to Me. In the last episode Brendan's character Eli Loker was waving OQO's Model 2+ around at lunch like a wine list, the MID playing the role of voice stress analyzer, helping the team identify whether a reclusive witness was telling the truth. No word on whether OQO plans on including such insightful software with the device when it comes to market, but we'd be telling a lie if we said we thought it would. Update: Andrew commented to let us know the software running here is called GoldWave, which may or may not help you identify someone being untruthful, but does generate some impressive-looking 3D visuals and can be yours for $45.[Thanks, Mike Wydra]
Screen Grabs: Nokia N95 8GB is Simon Cowell's American Idol

Famed American Idol judge Simon Cowell sports a phone crafted by a Finnish handset maker. We know, that's not quite England, but it's close enough. In tonight's episode, he proceeded to tell the iPhone that it simply "wasn't the complete package" while alluding to the lack of copy / paste, the T-Mobile G1 that it was "too young to be taken seriously" and the BlackBerry Storm that it just "pushed his buttons the wrong way." Ultimately, Paula, Randy and even Kara were coaxed into agreeing, sending the N95 8GB to Hollywood for one more shot at stardom. Sigh.%Gallery-43301%

For those who haven't already overloaded their DVR with the plethora of fall dramas, Heroes is looking to be a pretty solid bet. For one Nathan Petrelli, this season's about more than just discovering who he really is. It's about more than just being there for his baby bro. It's about strategically placing the phone that supposedly needs no product placement smack dab into one of NBC's hottest shows. Oh, and is it just us, or is he pretty perturbed about the lack of updates available for this thing too?

In a rare twist of good luck, we're able to bring you a very special Screen Grabs featuring both Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and the Nokia 7610. Apparently, the band's new video for the song I Don't Care -- which was heavily hyped by both label and artist for its multifarious cameos (Pharrell, Mark Hoppus, Spencer Pratt), and sharp lambaste of modern rock bands as "dudes wearing eyeliner and hawking energy drinks" (AKA Fall Out Boy) -- turned into something very different. According to Wentz on a now-removed blog post, the painstaking edit he worked on with director Alan Ferguson was jettisoned for an oddly product placement-filled extravaganza. In his words: "The version of the video that we worked on night after night is not the version that aired, yet somehow a cut full of glorious camera-phone shots did." Luckily for us, a major blow to the band's creative endeavors can be salvaged as another look at a piece of technology we know and certainly love. Screen Grabs: Microsoft Surface plots out the election on MSNBC
CNN's John King might have that sick multitouch electoral map, but MSNBC's not going down without a fight -- as dozens of you noticed, the network started using a Surface table yesterday as part of its election coverage. NBC News political director Chuck Todd will be the main handsman, using it to map out electoral votes and battleground states at first, but there are some other apps in the pipeline, according to Microsoft. Looks like the multitouch news wars have begun in full swing -- anyone taking bets on when the green screen gets totally replaced in the weather center? Yeah, we know a Screen Grabs about a commercial about technology is kind of cheating, but there are a couple of gaffes to point out here. First, Mr. Smug Surfer-Do "I Was In A Band But We Split Up Over Creative Differences" Verizon FiOS Guy is a total jerk, so we're totally rooting for the Zach Galifianakis look-alike, even if his bandwidth might suck. Second, waving a Kindle around might make you look like you rock at your job, but we're guessing a paper clipboard is about 100 times more functional for the actual task, unless you're supposed to read self-help books to your customers. We're not sure how this came to be, but when Jon Stewart needs to make a real / fake call to Democratic governor Mark Warner to let him know how bad his speech at the DNC "suuuuuuucked," he reaches for a Centro. Check the read link to watch the full episode, and if you don't enjoy comedy, you can just skip to about 3:29 in to see Palm's cheapo smartphone get some face-time.
Screen Grabs: Nokia's XpressMedia 5800 "Tube" plays big role in The Dark Knight

Even for gadget freaks, it was tough to take one's attention away from the outstanding action that filled The Dark Knight from beginning to end, but when Morgan Freeman had to hand over his Nokia XpressMedia 5800 (or Tube, as it were) at a stop in Hong Kong, we had to take a moment and gush. Nokia's still-not-official handset had a few critical scenes where it was highlighted, though we'd wager it was only viewable for 4 to 5 seconds in total. Beyond that, Nokia's peculiarly designed 6630 (circa 2004) was Gordon's handset of choice, which we risked an MPAA thug kneecapping in order to also snag and host up below.
