  • Google's KitKat statue unveiling may have leaked a new Nexus phone (update: video removed)

We always enjoy Google's new statues for each version of Android, however the one posted just now for KitKat / 4.4 may have a bonus treat. The Googler in the green shirt is holding a device that reads Nexus on the back, however compared to the woman conveniently holding a Nexus 4 just inches away, it's clearly not the same. The word Nexus is spelled out in a different direction, the camera seems different, and it looks bigger than the Nexus 4, but it appears to have an LG logo on the bottom. The video is embedded after the break, you can catch a glimpse of the mystery unit about 38 seconds in. It's certainly curious timing for a new device to pop up, right after the old one dropped in price and is out of stock for at least one version. Update: Well, you could have seen it in the video but Google has suddenly yanked it from YouTube, adding even more intrigue to the situation. We've contacted the company for a statement and will let you know if we hear anything. Update 2: One of our commenters linked another video of the unveiling that also shows the device. It's taken from behind the people shown above, and while we can't get a clear look at the screen you can get a better idea of the phone's dimensions. Whoops! It looks like that one's gone now too. [Thanks, Mike and everyone else who sent this in]

Whether you're the owner of a local gaming shop or the parent of the world's most spoiled child, now you, too, can make a sizable investment in the momentary, fleeting happiness of a youth with this "life-size" Mario statue. Available for ¥285,000 (about $2,900) from Amazon Japan, the statue stands five feet tall and is made from fiber-reinforced plastic. There aren't really any bells or whistles to speak of, what with it being a statue and everything, but it does give the owner a reference point for extrapolating the heights of everyone else in the Mario mythos. Is that worth nearly $3,000? Probably. Do we have $3000? Nope. Click up on the source link below for the fully-in-Japanese details, but be warned that the related items on this listing are not safe for work.

  • Did Google make its latest Android statue out of chrome for a reason?

When Google staffer Paul Wilcox started throwing pebbles at his girlfriend's office window, he never expected to be confronted by an angry giant Android made out of chrome. But crazy things happen at Mountain View all the time and Wilcox was quick to recover his composure. "What have you done with my girlfriend?" he cried. And then, "why, of all things, are you made out of chrome?!" Eventually Wilcox realized it was just a statue, recently put up in the mostly-green robot's honor, and that his girlfriend was safe and well. (Honestly, we just invented the whole girlfriend thing for dramatic effect, and we don't know where she works.) Anyways, the question remains: why this particular metallic finish? Is it to mark the constant updates to the Chrome browser on Android devices? Possibly. Or could it be, as MobileGeeks suggests, some oblique reference to Android apps running in a Chrome browser on some other OS? We don't know, but imagine this: an Android app running in a Chrome browser running as an Android app running in a Chrome browser... Freaky, right?

If an enthusiast-built Portal 2 turret piques your interest, Gaming Heads' Valve-licensed miniature replica may very well force your wallet open. Modeled using Portal 2's in-game assets and cast in "high quality poly-stone," these mini-turrets aim to intimidate intruders with a motion activated light-up eye. When Guild Wars 2's pre-purchase program started two days ago, scores of fans descended upon their local retailers looking to secure one of its few, highly desired collector's editions. For those fortunate enough to grab one, ArenaNet has posted an inside look at the centerpiece of the CE: the Rytlock Brimstone statue. While the team considered statues of each of the races, it decided that the Charr was the most iconic and worthy of star treatment. ArenaNet partnered up with Canada's Happy Worker to fashion the detailed statue that shows Rytlock with his flaming blade, standing over a field of skulls. The heavy statue is 10 inches tall and painstakingly hand-painted. If you're still attempting to hunt down a collector's edition of Guild Wars 2, head over to the pre-purchase page on the official site for the list of retailers in your country.

  • Steve Jobs statue unveiled in Budapest

    by

Tech Crunch reports that a life-size statue of Steve Jobs has been unveiled in Budapest, Hungary. The statue captures Jobs with an iPhone in one hand and gesturing with the other as he strides across an imaginary keynote stage. It was commissioned by Gabor Bojar, the founder and chairman of Hungarian software development house Graphisoft. The bronze statue was sculpted by Hungarian sculptor Erno Toth and stands near the entrance to Graphisoft's headquarters. Bojar commissioned the statue as a tribute to Jobs, who helped the architectural software firm when it was starting up in the early 80s. Bojar was quoted as saying, "Apple's support included cash and computers at a time when GRAPHISOFT was a small company with limited resources, working within the economic and political confines of what was, at the time, communist Hungary." The product that Graphisoft developed -- ArchiCAD -- is used by many architectural firms and is in its fifteenth version. It would be even more of a tribute to Jobs if the architects of the new Apple headquarters in Cupertino used ArchiCAD to design the huge, spaceship-like main building and campus.

  • Hungarian software company casts Jobs in bronze to remember him

A Hungarian software company named Graphisoft has decided to erect a bronze bust of Steve Jobs in the country's capital of Budapest to celebrate the life and times of Apple's founder. Graphisoft's founder first met Jobs back in 1984, and Jobs has since offered lots of advice, insight, and even financial help to Graphisoft, even while Hungary was under communist rule. The statue will depict Jobs standing and making a presentation, with one arm stretched out and some sort of iPhone-like remote in his other hand. The statue, which will stand 7 feet tall and have a plaque in the shape of an iPad on it, will be placed in an area called Graphisoft Park, where a number of other commercial technical firms are also located. The plaque will also bear a quote from Jobs himself: "The only way to do great work is to love what you do." Touching. We didn't really expect to ever see a Jobs statue in Budapest, but clearly Jobs touched quite a few lives all over the world.

  • EVE Online monument commemorates the summer riots

    by
    Brendan Drain

    11.16.2011

Back in June, the EVE Online community reacted negatively to the release of a lackluster Incarna expansion and controversy over microtransaction prices. Complaints eventually erupted into in-game riots with the leak of a company newsletter on microtransactions and an internal memo from the CEO denouncing complaints as noise. Players got together in trade hubs across the game to protest EVE's development direction, attacking a pair of invulnerable monuments outside the systems' major stations. As a nod to players' refusal to accept the status quo and force change, CCP recently altered the Jita monument that was the main focus of the summer riots. The statue now stands destroyed, and its plaque congratulating Heinky and Shin Ra of Burn Eden for solving a riddle contest several years ago has been changed to the text below: "This was once a memorial to the winners of a riddle contest sponsored by late entrepreneur Ruevo Aram. After standing proud for half a decade, it was destroyed in late YC113 by capsuleers who were staging a mass uprising against an intolerable status quo of intergalactic affairs. Today, the ruins of this once-great work of art stand as a testament to the fact that change is the universe's only constant." The change is currently only live on the test server, but will likely come to the main server on November 29th when the Crucible expansion launches. Thanks to Drew for the tip!

Well, here we are. Until someone builds an entire, sustainable city out of construction paper and tissues, we're pretty sure we've witnessed the ultimate opus from the papercraft community: A life-size model of No More Heroes hero, Travis Touchdown. Check out this masterfully intricate, somewhat-upsetting-in-a-Max-Headroom-kind-of-way statue over on Instructables. Well, it didn't exactly make the most timely appearance, but Google's statue-makers have now finally delivered a monument to the latest Android release: Honeycomb. As you can see, they've also gone the extra mile and actually included our friend the Android robot this time around, although it seems like it's about to come out on the losing end of its encounter with that giant bee.
