  • Xbox One UK ad hid augmented reality game, Titanfall-themed prizes

Remember that Xbox One ad full of mechs, soccer players, and Zachary Quinto? If you're a resident of the UK, you may also remember it for its strange, half-second image of a skull, a X-shaped symbol and a seemingly random string of letters. Xbox's UK division has unveiled just what was behind the mysterious imagery: an augmented reality game. You can take the red pill watch the reveal above. The augmented reality game (ARG for short) put forward a number of clues to be decoded, including a string of binary code, websites in Latin, images that needed to be rearranged and sound-based puzzles. The treasure hunt culminated in a grab-bag of Xbox One prizes, including the console itself, a Collector's Edition of Titanfall, and a VIP trip to the US. Said prizes were placed in an unmarked, white van in a secluded area, because nothing screams "come get your special prize" quite like an unmarked, white van in a secluded area. (We're relatively sure that part was staged considering winner Brad Butcher looks straight at a camera focusing on him, but still.) Congrats Brad! [Image: Microsoft]

  • Joystiq Tiny Streams: The Joystiq Titanfall beta massacre

    02.21.2014

Six Joystiq troopers went into the Titanfall PC beta on Tuesday, none came out. While these intrepid staffers did their very best to prevail, it was all for nought. Across all multiplayer modes offered in the early test version of Respawn Entertainment's upcoming shooter, Joystiq got thoroughly smoked. On the bright side, it was marvelously entertaining to watch them get positively obliterated by the competition. As captured in this Joystiq Tiny Streams edit of their adventures, the moment things truly got ugly was when all six got trapped in an alley during the popular Last Titan Standing mode. It's like the opening of Gangs of New York but, you know, with giant robots. If you enjoyed watching the Joystiq crew get taken to school, take note: Joystiq Tiny Streams appear every Monday and Friday at 4PM EST on Joystiq.com. Want to get in on the live action? Joystiq Streams broadcasts at 4PM EST every Tuesday and Thursday on the Joystiq Twitch channel. Our streams are chock full of developer commentary and schadenfreude. [Image: Respawn Entertainment]

  • Titanfall beta extended, now ends February 19

Those who've spent the weekend stomping pilots from the comfort of a titan's cockpit will be pleased to hear that the good times won't draw to a close tomorrow morning as originally planned. Instead, developer Respawn Entertainment has extended the Titanfall beta test for an additional day. "The Titanfall Beta will run through February 19th 6 PM PST," tweeted the official Titanfall Twitter account. No explanation is offered for this change of plans, but following Respawn's impromptu decision to kick open the doors of the beta test to the public only two days ago, it seems as if the game's pre-release incarnation has drawn more attention from players than the developer initially expected. Though Titanfall will be released for the Xbox 360, the ongoing beta test is only available to Xbox One owners with current Xbox Live Gold subscriptions and those PC gamers who registered for the beta test. Assuming you meet these criteria, getting into the game is as easy as downloading its client from either the Xbox Live Marketplace or EA's digital distribution service, Origin. [Image: EA]

Welcome to Joystiq Weekly, a "too long; didn't read" of each week's biggest stories, reviews and original content. Each category's top story is introduced with a reactionary gif, because moving pictures aren't just for The Daily Prophet. Did you see that the Koopalings are going to be new characters targets in Mario Kart 8? The Koopalings, the brats responsible for loads of deaths dealt to Mario and Luigi with lava, twirling hoops and rings of death from magic wands? Yup, we've got new rivals. You're annoying, Baby Mario, but you haven't stopped us from moving on to the next world of a Mario game before. Watch your back, Koopalings. There's something about family-friendly, inclusive Nintendo games that bring our most competitive spirit. Have you ever calmly congratulated a friend after their star thievery earned them the title of Party Champion in Mario Party 2? Have you nodded in admiration of your opponent's strategy in Mario Kart Wii, right after they steal your victory with a red shell a few feet away from the finish line? We have a feeling your dialogue might have been more ... "spirited" than civil. We're not judging though - heck, we just threatened a bunch of baby turtles one graf above this! Of course, a lot more happened this week beyond the Koopalings opening themselves up for a world of hurt. This week brought NPD data for January, a review of The Last of Us' "Left Behind" DLC and video previews for Titanfall and Evolve! There's lots more beyond that after the break though, so jump the break and dive into the biggest stories of the week!

  • Titanfall switches to an open beta on Xbox One today, PC will follow soon

Xbox One owners furiously refreshing their inboxes (or Respawn founder Vince Zampella's Twitter feed) looking for Titanfall beta codes can step away from the F5 button -- it's switching to an open beta. According to Major Nelson, it will appear on your console under the new game demos section, although it may take some time before everyone sees it. PC owners aren't entirely left out of the fun either, as Zampella indicates that version will follow "maybe tomorrow." The beta was originally scheduled to run until Tuesday night at 9PM ET, but that's going to be extended at least one day after server issues kept players offline most of Friday night. The plan is to "max stress" the all-multiplayer game's servers before it launches March 11th, but if you just want to find out if the former Call of Duty team can successfully blend a 6v6 shooter with mech action (a: seems like it) then it should work for that too.

Did you win the Titanfall beta lottery? No, you're just pretending to build a crazy kill-death ratio from the innards of a Titan? Well, it's your lucky day - Major Nelson has announced that Titanfall's Xbox One beta will begin opening to the public "later today." That's right, you won't need a code to join in! In order to enter the beta, sign into your console and look for the download in the "New Game Demos" section of the Game Store. It isn't up just yet, mind you - Major Nelson's post states that the download may "take some time" to appear to all Xbox One users, noting that some users may say it appear before others. Twitter activity from Respawn Entertainment's Vince Zampella reflects the beta plans, while also noting that the PC beta will also open its gates to the public, "maybe tomorrow."

A new behind-the-scenes video from developer Respawn Entertainment is all about the birds and the bees. And by "birds" and "bees," we mean giant robots and jetpacks, and how they come together to form Titanfall. The video chronicles the journey of Titanfall, from baby brainchild to the massive hype train it is today. There's also some insight into the development of Respawn itself, including a look at how comfy their floors must be - one snapshot from the studio's early days shows a team member lounging about on the carpet, head resting on their arms. Microsoft dished out two videos that offer players some tips on Titanfall ahead of the game's beta, which starts tomorrow. The first video glosses over the game's basic mech-like Titan functions and elaborate on ways players can use the Titans effectively within combat. Additionally, it provides a few pointers for the parkour-like locomotion elements in the game, such as hanging on walls by holding the left trigger. The second video, found after the break, tours the game's three modes and their rules. Titanfall is set to launch March 11 on Xbox One and PC with the Xbox 360 version following on March 25. We got an extended look at the game ourselves, and had plenty to say about it in our video preview. [Image: Electronic Arts]

  • Report: Xbox One controller precision being tuned for Titanfall [update]

    by
    David Hinkle

    02.12.2014

Update: A Microsoft representative has confirmed the planned update, which will arrive sometime this month. "Yes. The February update will increase the sensitivity of the outer boundaries of the thumbsticks on the Xbox One controller. The update will happen automatically when your controller syncs with your console." Microsoft and Respawn Entertainment have been working together to improve the Xbox One controller's performance prior to the launch of Titanfall next month. At a recent preview session for Titanfall, a Respawn representative told Game Informer the "analog sticks are more precise, and we worked very closely with [Microsoft]" to make that happen. The special edition Titanfall controllers will ship with the firmware enhancements, but all Xbox One consoles will receive the update prior to Titanfall's launch. We're checking with Microsoft about how this will occur, exactly, and whether players will be notified or prompted by the system. Last we saw, the controller firmware update process is no simple matter. Titanfall will kick-off a closed beta test starting on Friday, February 14. You can sign up for the beta on PC or Xbox One right now, though a valid Origin account is required to access the PC beta. [Image: Microsoft]

Joystiq's latest video preview explores the multiplayer-only world of Titanfall, the first game from developer Respawn Entertainment. Watch as Xav attempts to survive the onslaught of other eager pilots, utilizing giant mechs with devastating weaponry and the fancy footwork involved when a player's mechanical pal isn't quite ready to join the fray. Titanfall is coming to the Xbox One and PC on March 11 from Respawn and on the Xbox 360 on March 25 from developer Bluepoint Games. Players can sign up for a beta happening later this month on Xbox One and PC. Though the game is being published by EA, Respawn's Justin Hendry reminded Joystiq that the game will use Microsoft's cloud for its online structure, doing away with some of our fears that Titanfall will see a similarly shaky launch as Battlefield 4. Game Director Steve Fukuda further clarified that Microsoft's cloud will be the platform for all three versions of the game (Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC). [Image: Respawn Entertainment]

    02.11.2014

Update: EA has issued a press release dating the Titanfall beta for February 14. The beta will include three game modes: Attrition, Hardpoint Domination and Last Titan Standing. Attrition is Titanfall's spin on the classic Team Deathmatch mode, Hardpoint Domination is a capture-point objective mode where teams battle over three checkpoints and in Last Titan Standing, all players spawn with a Titan – when all of a team's Titans are destroyed, that team loses. Respawn Entertainment will conduct a beta test for Titanfall and all are welcomed to sign up. You can toss your name in the hat by heading the official site here. After signing up, EA will respond to the provided email no later than 11:59 PM PST on Feb 17. A valid Origin account is required to join the Titanfall beta on PC, which has some reasonable minimum system requirements. Titanfall, a fast-paced multiplayer first-person shooter with gigantic mechs, launches on Xbox One and PC on March 11; the Xbox 360 version drops on March 25. An update for Xbox One, planned for early March, will streamline the friends list interface interface and social features prior to Titanfall's launch on Xbox One. [Image: Respawn Entertainment]

  • Titanfall beta sign-up list is open now for PC and Xbox One gamers (update)

Titanfall has become something bigger than a multiplayer mech game. It's the reason many people decided to invest in an Xbox One, and the reason why many others decided to postpone their next-gen console purchase altogether -- the finished title won't arrive until March 11th, and it's coming to the PC and 360 (360 is slightly delayed until March 25th) too. In the meantime though, the developer behind Titanfall, Respawn Entertainment, is providing early access via a beta and you can sign up for access starting tonight at 9PM ET. The good news is that you don't need to pre-order the game to get in, but the bad news is that it's not open to all, so we don't know how many slots there are to go around. Go ahead and try your luck at the sign-up page -- we'll let you know the URL once it's posted "shortly before" 9PM ET, according to Respawn founder Vince Zampella. Update: The beta sign-up page is live a bit early, interested Xbox One and PC (with an EA Origin account) gamers can apply here (protip: The USA is actually near the top of the country list, not all the way at the bottom). The accompanying FAQ answers a few questions you might have about the beta. There's no Xbox 360 beta planned, once the game is installed on an Xbox One any user on that console can play it, and the beta is available to gamers around the world, although all text will be in English. If you weren't first to sign up don't worry, it doesn't appear to be first-come, first- served. Sign-ups close on the 14th at 7PM ET, and those admitted will be notified via email by midnight pacific time on February 17th. Update 2: EA has sent out a quick press release advertising the beta and dispensing a few more details, specifically the start date: February 14th. It also details the game modes available to testers, named Attrition, Hardpoint Domination and Last Titan standing -- essentially Team Deathmatch, a control point capture mode and variant on Team Deathmatch that ends when all of a team's Titans are destroyed.

  • Xbox One streamlining friends list and party chat before Titanfall

    by

The Xbox One's multiplayer and social features are to be adjusted in a pre-Titanfall upgrade scheduled for "early March," Microsoft says. This latest overhaul, which will target the friends list and multiplayer party systems, will be the second consecutive update issued by Microsoft in as many months. Microsoft plans to change the "Activity" "Friends" application on Xbox One to a "Social" tile that opens straight to a friends list – showing you who's online at a glance, just like in the good ol' Xbox 360 days. Party chat audio will be activated and separated from game chat by default, Microsoft promises, and forthcoming multiplayer games will have a standardized option to quickly invite friends into the match. While welcome, the return of this reliable Xbox 360 feature shows the odd online isolation one can feel in the robust but splintered operating system of the Xbox One. Xbox's Chief Product Officer, Marc Whitten, also claims the March update will bring further improvements that have yet to be highlighted. "The improvements to multiplayer and parties are just a few of the features that will be included," he says, "and we'll continue to share more details in the days and weeks ahead, including in-depth videos so you're all ready to take advantage of the new features in March." If you're just joining us - and your Xbox One is telling you it's time to update – you've gotten the February update, which promises to eradicate the dual mysteries of controller battery life and remaining hard drive space. Update: The February update will not go live today, but it's due to launch this week, Major Nelson tweeted. "The team is working on finalizing. More details when I get them," he says. • Xbox One's second big update focused on multiplayer ahead of Titanfall's March arrival

    by
    Ben Gilbert

    02.11.2014

For better or worse, Microsoft is clearly aware that the Xbox One's party system and online multiplayer functionality are lacking. An update aimed at bringing parity between Xbox One's party system and the Xbox 360 arrives this March -- the second half of this spring's big XB1 update, the first of which will launch this week -- and it features some fairly run-of-the-mill alterations. The headline feature, for instance? "Get to your friends list faster," which simply bumps the friends list to the main homepage within the Friends app (the current version is seen above). The rest of the list is along the same lines: Party chat will automatically engage when in a party; you'll be able to chat with people in games you're not playing; invites to party up can be sent from in-game menus; and a recent-players filter is being added to the Friends app as well. Longtime multiplayer gamers will no doubt recognize all this functionality as already available on Xbox 360; we're thankful it's coming back, but shouldn't this have been in the Xbox One at launch? As previously promised, the multiplayer-focused update is set to arrive just ahead of Titanfall's March 11th launch. Should today's news not be too thrilling for you, it sounds like multiplayer isn't the only aspect of next month's update: Microsoft says it'll "continue to share more details in the days and weeks ahead."

Developer Respawn Entertainment has unveiled another Titanfall faction spotlight, this time focused on the IMC, or Interstellar Mining Corporation. Originally known as Hammond Engineering, the group that would become the IMC was first formed to extract resources from various planets for use in industrial construction and fabrication projects. Once the hulking Titans hit the battlefield and demand for the bipedal weapons platforms increased, the IMC achieved stratospheric levels of wealth. Driven by shareholder demands, the IMC now seeks even greater riches, and has employed a well-funded military presence to ensure that nothing gets in its way. More details on the IMC can be found on the Titanfall website, along with short biographies on three of the group's key members. Titanfall is slated to reach the Xbox One and PC on March 11, with an Xbox 360 version of the game arriving on March 25. [Image: Respawn Entertainment]

    02.07.2014

It's strange to think Titanfall was borne from developers mulling things over in an abandoned office for two months, all sat in a circle of folding chairs. The Respawn team, led by ex-Infinity Ward devs, soon grew and grew, and with EA behind it the studio's now a month away from releasing arguably the Xbox One's most anticipated game to date. As such, the news train is in full flow as Respawn drip-feeds info, mostly through Twitter. We now know the mech-toting shooter has an imminent beta on Xbox One and PC, and it uses codes rather than being fully open. The game itself features SmartGlass integration of some kind, but Kinect isn't supported. Finally, the Xbox 360 version was outsourced to Bluepoint, and it's due two weeks after the game hits Xbox One and PC on March 11.
