  • Sony responds to Warhawk DRM issues

Have you heard? You won't be able to share Warhawk, like you have all your other PSN games. Although you can install the game on to five different machines, the fine text in the PlayStation Store reveals that you can only play the game from one of those machines within a 24 hour period. "One time fee for download or use solely by the purchasing PSN account on up to five PS3 units, with no more than one activated PS3 unit within a 24 hour period. Content may not be used by any other account."So, will this practice of limiting access to downloadable games become commonplace? No. In a statement to Next-Gen, Sony explains that Warhawk needed a different DRM scheme in order to "protect our investment" and "maintain our ability to offer a 24-hour free online gameplay experience." Understandable, considering how the PSN is free of charge. However, make sure you read the fine print before download your next game -- things might change on a case-by-case basis.[Via Joystiq]

  • Sony prohibits sharing of downloadable Warhawk

There's always been a catch when sharing downloadable PSN games: If it's an online multiplayer title, only one PSN account can use a particular license at any one time, though the license can be shared with any number of accounts across five consoles (so, you purchase and download the game, and then four of your friends can download the game for free onto their consoles using your account, but play using their own accounts). With nothing said leading up to its release, no one expected the rule to be changed for Warhawk, but it has been. It's not that Sony has lifted the limitation, but rather, Sony has reinforced it further. Each Warhawk license is tethered to one PSN account, the purchaser, and while the game can be installed on up to five consoles using that account (and only that account for playing), a single Warhawk license cannot be used on more than one console within a single day.

Sure, you can pick up Warhawk tomorrow in stores, but if you want to save on the gasoline, the title will be available for download via the PlayStation store tonight at 12:01 a.m. EST. That's a bonus for West Coast gamers, who can get the game at 9:00 p.m. PST tonight.Going the traditional route isn't a bad option, however, as the retail version is priced $20 more but includes more video content and a Bluetooth headset.%Gallery-1945%[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Synchronize your watches. Warhawk is coming tonight. Midnight, in fact. For those on the East Coast, that means there's less than twelve hours until Warhawk can be purchased from the PlayStation Store. If you're on the West Coast, you'd be able to start downloading and playing before the CSI:Miami plays on CBS.Those that don't want to pay for a digital download will be able to pick up a $60 retail version (which includes a headset) at select stores tomorrow. See you online! Don't forget to add PSFanboy to your Friends list to play with us tonight and through the coming weeks.[Thanks, cubex!]

Games! Yes, seriously. Check out the full release list, just a matter of millimeters below where you're looking right now.US Games Warhawk Lair Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 Dynasty Warriors: Gundam EU Games No new releases Asian Games Bladestorm: The Hundred Years' War Mist of Chaos Warhawk and Lair? In the same week? Potentially. A lot of websites are showing the US release date has been pushed forward to the 30th of this month. It could easily be the case that whatever problems they had with the game that originally had it pushed back could have been solved early. In any case, we'll find out within a few days.European PS3 owners, worry not. As games are region free, you can import any of the games in the above list without fear. Your PS3 will gobble it up without caring where it's from. Also, don't forget the PSN version of Warhawk will be out this Thursday, with the retail box appearing on shelves in a few weeks. Remember, release dates are constantly subject to change. Constantly.

  • Warhawk pushed back in Europe, but don't start crying just yet

While technically this can hardly be called a delay, Warhawk has been pushed back slightly in PAL territories. ThreeSpeech has declared that we can expect the game to grace the European PSN Store on August 30th, not the 28th as previously stated. The reason for this is simple. Sony have always updated the European PSN Store on Thursdays, not Tuesdays. Why break the habit of a lifetime few months and update it a couple of days early? We can see the same thing happening with the release of Heavenly Sword. The UK release for which is September 14th, two days after the American release on the 12th. Retail games come out on Fridays here, that's just the way it goes. But wait a second, didn't we just get a PSN update on a Wednesday? We wonder if those extra two days the yanks get to play with give them the edge. With worldwide servers available on day one, we'll no doubt soon find out.

  • Warhawk finally dated for Europe

ThreeSpeech has the scoop on the European release dates for Warhawk. We have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the downloadable version will be available on the same day as in America. The 28th of August. The bad news is that the retail version won't be available until the 21st of September. Yes, we know. The retail version is out on August 28th in America. That's a week today, for those of you with your head in the clouds. But where's ours? Over three weeks late, that's where. We're not particularly impressed. This isn't the first time Europe has been shafted like this. The bizarre thing is that the game will be available via download. Taunting those of us who are waiting for the cheap-as-free Bluetooth headset. Oh well, looks like another title we'll have to import.

Despite finally getting some of Sony's European release dates recently, we were still kept in the dark regarding a price and release date for the download version of Warhawk. ThreeSpeech has today revealed both of these things. Apparently the PSN version of Warhawk is being worked on very hard in order to be released simultaneously in all regions. From the sounds of it, however, we wouldn't be surprised if it eventually came out a week or two later. As for the price, Warhawk will be downloadable for £20. That's almost an exact translation from Dollars to Sterling. Has that ever happened before? The retail version will be £40, which is still a pretty good deal considering what's in the box. There's no word yet on the exact price in Euros. If the developers really do manage to get the game up on the PSN before the end of the month for all regions, then will you submit to impatience and download or wait a couple of weeks for the retail version? Tough call.

We don't know if you realized this, but since July 16th, the only new releases for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have been three football games and a NASCAR game. When times get this tight, you've got to take the fun where you can get it, and PS3 gamers got a nice fun infusion yesterday with a big update to the PSN store. You can now find demos for DiRT and NCAA Football 08, trailers for Folklore and Timeshift, a making-of doc for Heavenly Sword and a few assorted movie trailers. Hopefully, there's enough there to get you guys through, just remember, when times get tough: Warhawk's just around the corner.

  • PS3 first-party exclusives finally get EU release dates

It's been kind of hard getting Sony to nail down release dates for their upcoming stable of first-party exclusives, regardless of territory. Europe has really gotten the rawest deal though, with no confirmed release dates for any games period -- until now. Thanks to Gamer's Creed, Europeans finally know when they will be getting the first wave of mega-titles from Sony. Here's the list according to the scanned documents: Warhawk with headset: September 19th Heavenly Sword: September 19th Folklore: October 10th Lair: October 24th Eye of Judgment: October 24th Singstar: October The release dates are kind of lame in general -- with Europe getting titles between two weeks and a month later than Americans get them. At least PS3s are region free, so impatient Euros can simply just order them from an American store like this one (as used by Jem, our resident foreigner). Still, the release list has got to be frustrating for Europeans wanting for the summer game drought to finally end. [Via N4G]

Dylan Jobe has posted a massive Warhawk FAQ on the official PlayStation.Blog and it pretty much answers any question you can think up. During the thirty question Q&A, Jobe talks indepth about server options and limitations, responds to a couple really random rumors (a Resistance:FoM weapon hidden in Warhawk? uh...), and lists the 100 top Beta players. Here's a couple other highlights from the FAQ: As for as Jobe knows, the Jabra Bluetooth headset bundled with the retail version of Warhawk is not a limited time offer. Warhawk was designed around the idea of downloading additional content. If we want it -- it will come. The servers offer worldwide play, prepare to get your ass handed to you by Koreans. For the full FAQ, head over to the PlayStation.Blog.

Incognito's Dylan Jobe is the man behind Warhawk and over at the PlayStation.Blog, he wants to share with you some details on the tech behind the game's dedicated servers. Sure, Warhawk is going to offer players the ability to host matches straight from their own PS3, but they're also offering "Ranked-Dedicated" servers which are powered by – you guessed it! – PlayStation 3s! Sony's IT team has apparently built clusters like this "all over the world," providing gamers with an ostensibly reliable backbone for Warhawk fragging while providing the tinfoil hat crowd a compelling reason to unplug their PS3. They can talk to each other you know ... can't you hear them?![Via Engadget]

C'mon, we all knew PS3 clusters were good for more than academia, right? Thankfully for those who are itching to jump right into a worldwide dogfight when Warhawk lands, it looks like Sony has you covered. Granted, the game will allow for PS3 owners to host and play on their own matches, but the Ranked-Dedicated servers that you may also opt for shouldn't be lacking in terms of sheer power. Constructed by the SCEA IT team, this ginormous PS3 cluster will soon be used to connect Warhawk gamers everywhere, and while we're never told precisely how many PlayStation 3s were scrounged up in order to make this happen, feel free to click on through for another shot and start countin'.

Why, a huge amount of official Warhawk dedicated servers -- of course! In the most recent post at the official PlayStation.Blog, the game director of Warhawk, Dylan Jobe, posted pictures of their Ranked Servers data center and talked about online/server details for their upcoming Sixaxis-friendly title.According to Dylan, they have PS3 clusters like the one above scattered all over the world to make sure you you have access to a fast, latency free server -- no matter where you live. Also, since you can host your own servers, even if you don't find an official server you like, it shouldn't be hard to find a player server that fits what you're looking for. Players can create their own dedicated Warhawk servers for up to 32 players at once, but they won't be able to play on their PS3 while the server is running (to longtime PC gamers, this is nothing new). Players can also create their own servers that they can play in for up to 24 players at once, offering a ton of flexibility for clans and hardcore players. Between ecstatic previews, an accessible price point and strong server support, Warhawk is looking more and more like it could be a major hit. Only three more weeks until the Game Drought of Summer is over![Thanks everybody!]

  • Warhawk dated August 28th, digital and retail prices announced

Over at the official US PlayStation blog, Warhawk director Dylan Jobe announced that Sony's online title has gone gold and will be hitting the PlayStation Network and retail shelves on August 28th. Jobe also put an end to speculation regarding the price, stating that the digital download for Warhawk will be priced at $39.99, while the boxed copy will retail for the now standard $59.99.Seeing as how this is a multiplayer only title with a digital download, we would have preferred to see that price a bit lower, but still, this is a much better scenario than say, the Shadowrun debacle. The retail version of Warhawk is being thought of as a premium version of the title, featuring expanded video content as well as a Bluetooth headset. Not bad for an extra twenty bucks. For those wondering about the fabulously pictured Warhawk pin, sorry, it's for Beta players only. The top ranked Beta players, to be exact.

The multiplayer-only Warhawk finally has a price: $60 for the retail version (which includes Bluetooth headset) and $40 for the downloadable PSN version. The game will be available simultaneously on August 28th.Which one will you choose? The downloadable version will be cheaper, but the PlayStation.blog explains that "the retail game is more of a premium version with some expanded video content, traditional package and manual."Wonder what's going to happen to EGM's review of the game ...[Thanks, Kyle P!]

  • Warhawk review in EGM may change depending on price

    08.02.2007

Editor's Note: The following reflects the personal opinion of Nick, and does not necessarily reflect the views of PS3 Fanboy staff. PS3 Fanboy does factor price into consideration when reviewing games. In a complete wrong move on EGM's part, 1UP reports that the reviewers over at the magazine have had little notes posted onto their Warhawk reviews stating, in some form or another, that the review "score should be dropped a whole point if the price was announced above $30." Sure, Sony hasn't officially announced a Warhawk price for the downloadable version and that's a little odd, but I've got problem with this bit of news.An unannounced price shouldn't affect a game's review score by such a significant margin. It's tough to grasp what the point of dropping a review score is because of a game possibly being priced above the rumored price created by the media. Does it make you enjoy it less? Does it make the graphics worse? Does it hinder the framerate? It might dissuade people from buying the downloadable version if it were, say, $50, but if that's the case, the retail version is a great deal. If the downloadable version is $30, that's a budget title and a great deal. It's a bit difficult to explain, which is exactly why the EGM staff are concerned about how to review the game. I'd like your take on the situation, in that case! Is there a difference between buying a game due to price and buying a game due to quality? Price does affect many people's willingness to buy, but should it necessarily affect the score given to a game by reviewers getting the game for little or no cost?

Modern multiplayer games have nearly killed something we loved from the Nintendo 64 era: split-screen multiplayer. Now that our televisions have more pixels and are larger, shouldn't we herald the return of split-screen multiplayer? Warhawk is proud to boast four players on one screen, and if you're running on an HDTV, each section of the screen will still have more resolution than full-screen games from the PS1/N64 era. We hope that other games will follow Warhawk's path and make split-screen gaming sexy again. Do you agree?Check out new screenshots in our gallery below:%Gallery-3210%

  • Rumor: Warhawk already adding vehicles, weapons?

These are all just rumors, but for those of you lucky enough to play the Warhawk beta, this should be good news for you and even better news for those of us who were already excited to get our online battles on. The site posting these rumors is getting a ton of hate, but we're giving them the benefit of the doubt and assuming that there are, in fact, changes happening between the beta and final release. Whether the changes are those mentioned below or not, we can't say for sure. Huge graphical update Expanded matches -- 32 vs 32 rather than 32 max players Plenty of downloadable content upon launch in addition to bare-bones game Six new weapons Four new vehicles Hmm, something smells fishy. It's like they took one piece of news that was probably true (graphical update), then spiced it up with other bits of news that would be rather unbelievable. Following the recent IGN interview, it seems that may be the case. In all, though, rumors are rumors, so we'll go ahead and keep them filed next to our lollipop notebook and chocolate hologram disc full of skittles. We love candy.[Thanks, Joe!]
