  • Warhawk gets an official retail price, package

This is another one of those times where we were right, but feel sort of bad about it. We surmised the retail version of Warhawk would cost the same as any other PS3 title because of the inclusion of extra features and a wireless "headset" and turns out that's exactly the case, according to EBGames/Gamestop's website. The retail version is going to sell for $59.99 in the US. After telling us your impressions from the beta, would you drop sixty big ones for a decent headset and some extra features? We are glad the included headset is a small earpiece. We're glad it's bluetooth and we're glad it's wireless (USB cable included for charging). The headset is from Jabra, a fairly well-known manufacturer of fairly decent-quality headsets. Our verdict? If you don't have a wireless headset, buy the retail version. If you've already got one, just download the game. That way, everybody is getting a pretty good deal. Agreed?

  • Warhawk gets some box art, retail-specific features

What you are looking at right there is the official WarHawk boxart you will see on retail shelves in a few months. IGN got dibs on the glorious cover, but we're not bitter. We still get to see it, after all. In addition to unveiling the art, we've gathered up all the details we currently know about what will be specific for the retail version of the game. Don't ask about prices, though, because we aren't sure. We'd guess the retail version will stay at the relative price of other PS3 titles, with the downloadable version about two-thirds of that price ($59.99 vs. $39.99 in the US).If you take the plunge and buy the retail version, you'll get a headset bundled in the package as well as a bunch of bonus stuff on the Blu-ray disc itself, like behind-the-scenes documentaries and other such things. What's good to notice on the boxart, in addition to knowing these details, is the mention of splitscreen play (under the Multiplayer Only tag). For too long have next-gen games touted online gaming as the crux of their entertainment value, but they forgot people have real friends too and they want to play. WarHawk will apparently address this and we're glad that's finally completely confirmed.

When we asked our readers to give us their opinions of the Warhawk beta, we didn't know we'd receive so many responses. Players had to be invited to participate in the beta, and had to respect an NDA Sony had imposed. To respect the agreement, we won't be doling out specifics of the game. However, certainly Sony can't ask people to avoid expressing their emotions! Click on to read a full overview of the beta, what to expect in the game, quotes from our readers, pros and cons, and some fluff to make it all come together nicely. Read on, happy PS3 Fanboys, and get to know the Warhawk beta from the voices of those that matter most: not critics nor Sony, but by the gamers themselves.

  • Rumor: Warhawk beta being hacked by rabid fans

Invites to the Warhawk beta were limited, but that is apparently not stopping the most dedicated of fans from stopping in for a visit. The methods certainly scream fanboy, as they involve tweaking the PS3 linux code to such a degree that only those with copious amounts of patience and an undying love to taste the beta phase of Warhawk could withstand such an arduous process. A simple web search showed at least four variants of this method, some without the need for linux tweaking. Something tells us we're not so sure Incog. Inc would be flattered to see an increase in beta participants from unauthorized gamers at the closed beta event. Without official word from Incog, there is no way to know if such hackers have had any affect on the beta phase of the project. These guys have enough on their hands with working out the kinks in multiplayer, without having to police their invite-only event. Lest any such intrusive action cause a further game delay, we issue a word of advice to all would-be hackers: stay out of the beta if you're not invited. Let those that were lucky enough to receive a beta invite continue to provide the devs feedback they need to make the final Warhawk experience the best it can be for the rest of us. We'll get our fill soon enough.

Greetings, fair readers of PS3 Fanboy! We come to you today with a request that you may find interesting. A lot of you have e-mailed us saying that you were invited to the WarHawk beta. We, naturally, were not. So instead of sitting here and pretending to understand all the fun you may be having, we're going to issue a call for assistance. Here's the plan. We'd like you to send us your impressions of the beta. Tell us what you thought -- what you liked, disliked, what seemed balanced, what was not. How the levels played, how the servers were (even though beta servers tend to crash more often), anything at all that you took away from the beta, we'd love to hear. When we get enough responses (or whenever the beta decides to end), we're going to put up a feature about what actual gamers thought about the game's direction and gameplay, using your quotes! Sure, it's not "getting a free game" or anything, but when it comes down to it, it doesn't matter if the critics like a game. It matters if you do. So that's what we're planning to bring to the table. You can reach us with your information here, so give us a subject line that helps us know what you're talking about. Like "My WarHawk Experience" or something equally cheesy and sophomoric. Happy gaming!

  • WarHawk final formats finally figured out

    by

    05.19.2007

In a lengthy interview with Game Informer, Senior VP of Marketing Peter Dille came out with many fantastic bits of information regarding PlayStation Home, multiple games and other nagging questions we've been wondering about. From the "Hall of Fame" (PlayStation's take on achievements) to E3 to WarHawk, a lot of issues were addressed but we've got to admit the WarHawk info really made us nod. Here's what Dille said about the final formatting decision on WarHawk: "Warhawk will be available as a download from the PlayStation Network, but we'll also have a retail SKU. There will be differences between the two. The game will be the same, but in the retail SKU we're able to take advantage of that Blu-ray disc and pack that disc with behind-the-scenes information, developer interviews, demos of other games and again, if you've got Blu-ray why not take advantage of that. On top of that, we'll have a Bluetooth wireless headset so that you can jump into the fray on day one and start trash-talking."So for the cost of $60 in North America, you get WarHawk, oodles of extras and a Bluetooth headset? Sounds like a deal and/or bargain. For those who don't yet have a headset of any kind, this is a fantastic deal. While he didn't comment on the pricing of the PSN download version, we'd estimate they'd keep it at $20-$30 because it is just online and headsets aren't cheap. Especially bluetooth. If you want to learn anything else, check out the complete interview with Dille.

The application for the Warhawk beta is available now. The beta is reportedly set to start next week, so you better sign up soon if you want a chance to get on some pre-final space shooting action. Our worrisome siblings at PS3 Fanboy fret that the beta, initially announced only to members of the exclusive Game Advisory Panel and the RLS, will remain exclusive to the two aforementioned groups. The beta for PS Home was predominantly GAP members and it appears the same situation might happen here. Regardless, it never hurts to try. %Gallery-1945%[Via PS3 Fanboy]

Members of the Gamer Advisory Panel were informed last night that the Warhawk online beta would begin next week on May 24th. By heading to warhawk.com, visitors can register for a chance to enter the beta, but it's unclear if preference will be given to the exclusive GAP community. Regardless, this is much better than what we first feared. We're hoping that Sony will avoid a repeat of their Home beta fiasco, where an incredibly limited number of people were invited.Regardless of the selection criteria, it certainly can't hurt to try and register, can it? Visit warhawk.com and fill out their (rather annoyingly detailed) survey for your chance to enter the online beta.

The one game that just couldn't decide what to be -- retail, download, retail, download, online, offline, online, etc -- has graced us with a new gallery and let us just say: wow. This game looks fantastic. For a title that you download off of the internet and stick directly on your hard drive, this is surely unprecedented. We're very excited for WarHawk to just release already, but we've got to wait until they actually decide once and for all what form of distribution they'll release it on. Right now, it appears as though it'll come in both retail and online versions. It probably will change a few more times. For now, check out a video after the break.%Gallery-3210%

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Warhawk_back_on_Blu_ray_with_beta_and_Bluetooth_headset'; This announcement will have everyone seeing blue, or blu, depending on your vowel usage: the Blu-ray disc version of Sony's online shooter, Warhawk, exists after all and will come bundled with extra materials, including developer interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and a Bluetooth headset. Aside from distinguishing it from the PlayStation Network version of the game, the headset should prove handy if you're in a rush jump in and trash talk.Warhawk will also have a public beta starting on May 24th. You can sign up at the official site, quite possibly by the time you're reading this. We had a lot of fun with this one at Sony's Gamers Day, and it should be even better once they the beta opens and all the fresh meat starts pouring it.%Gallery-1945%

  • Rumor: Sony and Incog Inc. splittville?

The coveted developer that created the Twisted Metal and Warhawk franchises may soon be parting ways with the Sony empire. Rumor has it Sony has been none too pleased with Incog's performances as of late. Sony will sever ties once Warhawk is completed for the PS3, and even scoop up a few of their talented developers in their wake. Those remaining on-board with Incog would likely have to form new financial relationships with publishers and such. If you were waiting for some Twisted Metal love on the PS3, you might just have to wait indefinitely. No word on exactly who will retain the rights to either Warhawk or Twisted Metal after the deal is done. More to come on this as it develops. [Via PSXExtreme]

  • Warhawk beta starts soon and you are not getting in

It looks like Incognito was telling the truth -- Warhawk is indeed having a beta and it looks like it is starting sooner than was expected. A user on PS3 Forums just received an e-mail inviting him to become a potential beta tester for the sci-fi combat game. The problem? Only Sony RLS members got the invites, and you can only become a member of RLS if you work for certain retail store that sells PS3s. It is supposed to be more exclusive than the GAP membership that they based the private Home beta on. I'm getting screwed again! The initial e-mail didn't include a date for the start of the beta, but if they're recruiting players now, you can be guaranteed it will start in the near future. It is likely that this is only phase one of the beta (much like with Home), so don't worry too much - there should still be be more chances later to get into the Warhawk beta. We'll let you know as soon as we know more.[Via NeoGaf]

  • European and Japanese PlayStation Network releases for Friday May 11th

I'm going to keep this post fairly short. The less said about the following, the better. Here's what we Europeans will see grace our PlayStation Stores today. Warhawk trailer (free) Rocky Blu-ray trailer (free) Impressed? No, neither am I. Hopefully we'll see something a little more substantial next Friday. Funny, I remember thinking the same thing this time last week. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the Japanese store has been updated to finally include flOw. No bullet list needed. That's all they got. I guess comparing this to yesterday's American PSN update will just make us feel bad, though it's getting increasingly difficult not to.

Finally, after a month or so of doing the will-it-won't-it dance, David Jaffe's Calling All Cars has a set release date: Today! It will appear alongside Rampart (as promised) as part of the US PlayStation Store line-up tonight. There's no word on when it will be coming to Europe, but we're hoping it'll be within the next few weeks. The full line-up for tonight is as follows: Calling All Cars ($9.99) Rampart ($4.99) Warhawk video (free) Burnout Paradise trailer (free) Rampage video (free) All in all, not a bad haul. You lucky Americans. No doubt we'll have a review up for Calling All Cars before too long. Until then, be sure to comment and let us know what you think. Enjoy![Via SCEA press release]

  • Incognito sees a WarHawk beta, demo on the horizon

    05.02.2007

If we're lucky, Incognito will be able to release an open beta of WarHawk as well as a demo before the full release. Developer Dylan Jobe is quoted as saying: "What I can say is this: We are firm believers in demos and betas and stuff like that. We believe that we want to get feedback from our players and we want to give them the opportunity for them to play the game, because we're really excited about how word of mouth can really help our title. I can't say anything now, but definitely keep your eye out."Since the game is online-only, we'd absolutely expect a beta and demo to get slapped up on the PlayStation Network sometime before the final release -- which isn't exactly far away. Jobe said that if their game gives the feeling of a fast-paced Battlefield, he'll be happy. Would you? Keep your eyes open for a surprise PS Store update in the coming weeks.

Game Informer has a brand new hands-on with everybody's favorite is-it-or-isn't-it downloadable title, Warhawk. They got to go a couple rounds with Incognito's follow-up to the original PSX launch hit and appear to have come away impressed. Gameplay sounds like a fun combination of a faster-paced Battlefield 2 melded together with a sci-fi take on the Xbox sleeper Crimson Skies. Game Informer also loved the SIXAXIS controls, saying that they worked 'extremely well' and were 'very intuitive and natural'. Good news for people still wary over the validity of motion controls (though they confirmed there is an option to fly 'old school' for those stuck in the past). They also have a great interview with Warhawk's Game Director, Dylan Jobe. He talks a lot about the online experience, and it is well worth checking out. To top it all off, they have a bunch of new screenshots too. Check it out while it's hot!

  • WarHawk screens continue to impress

    04.24.2007

As the release date for WarHawk draws nearer and nearer (by near we of course mean "still far away"), screens are popping up all over the place. Here's the freshest batch from IGN. What've we got to say? They look fantastic, patriotic, even. I mean, a red, white and blue airplane blowing the heck outta the competition (aptly named "Grandmasboy" and others) is always a pick-me-up.Slated for a September release, we expect a lot from this title. It's been the PS3 showcase title for more than one show, but always garnered lukewarm reception. With the drop of the single-player missions and focus solely on multiplayer dogfights, there's renewed hope this game will prove itself. We're still not sure what the price will be, if it'll be downloadable, store-bought, or both. It changes all the time.

  • WarHawk decides to be indecisive about format

A wise man once said to me: "If you cannot decide to go left or right, you must go right for a little while, turn around and go left for twice as long, then find a way to go both ways. Possibly through a series of right turns." Yeah, it was a gas station attendant and yeah, I was pretty lost. But I found the interstate eventually and all because I was indecisive in what direction I should go at the third light. Why was that anecdote important? Because it seems WarHawk is going through the same ordeal. Blu-ray or PS-Store? A Sony representative recently answered some queries on the subject and said that WarHawk will be available via both mediums -- on Blu-ray and on the PlayStation Network. Will there be a difference between the two? Will one involve microtransactions while the other has everything bundled up from the get-go? We don't know. Which would you guys get? The full shabang or piece by piece, if that's the way the cookie shall crumble? Would an online-only title really merit the $60 price tag it may get in stores?

    04.03.2007

We open today's plethora of posts with a fantastic video of the upcoming online-only-maybe-not-but-downloadable-yet-on-bluray-disc-at-the-same-time-what-the-hell game, WarHawk. This video shows some online ground-based gameplay, which is undoubtedly awesome. There are clearly tanks (which seem to clean up the competition), jeeps that seem fairly unreliable, and infantry... which are pretty cool, but not too practical. One guy tries to hide from a tank by crouching on the other side of a hill... but the tank just rolls him over. Nice try, buddy.
