  • Rumorong: Warhawk back to being downloadable title

Wednesday's rumorang about Incognito's online-only Warhawk becoming a Blu-ray title has been gracefully tossed away once more. The "semi-official" Sony blog, ThreeSpeech, sets the record straight and rubbishes a Sony representative's previous comments to IGN about the game seeing disc-based distribution. "Sony have advised us that it will be available as a download only for the time being and that a statement will be released if that position should change."Now that we have the issue of distribution out of the way, perhaps we can start focusing on pricing and, oh yes, whether or not the game will be any good. • Warhawk to swoop onto Blu-ray

After Sony's unveiling of a reworked and online-only Warhawk at GDC last week, a general assumption was made that the game would be available for purchase and download on the PlayStation Network. While this may still be true, a Sony spokesperson has confirmed to IGN that, "Officially, Warhawk will be released as a Blu-ray-based product." Well, we'll assume you know what they say about assuming.Sony has not yet made any announcements regarding the price of Warhawk, though one would assume -- or rather, expect -- it to be appropriately priced for a title focused entirely on multiplayer content. At the Sony's bloggers meeting held during GDC, Incognito's Dylan Jobe said, "I don't think it should be a full-priced product." Go ahead and assume that you'll find out more before the game's late Summer release (u ass).[Via PS3 Fanboy]

  • WarHawk confirmed -- Blu-ray release, not download [update 1]

In yet another episode of "Watch the Bloggers Jump Through Hoops to Accurately Unfurl the Truth Behind WarHawk" we present to you, hopefully, the final word direct from Sony. Don't get us wrong -- WarHawk is still an online-only game, but it's still being sold on a hard disc. IGN got this response from a Sony representative: "Officially, Warhawk will be released as a Blu-ray-based product. It will see release in late summer."Officially. Should be the end all, eh? Phil Harrison did say at GDC it would be a downloadable title, but he might have gotten his wording mixed up with "online only" -- it's tough to explain, but the mismatch of interpretations makes sense. A game that will only be played online? It's natural to think that you'd get the game from the internet, then, or something. In any case, WarHawk will be on store shelves. Hopefully at a price less than other games, since it is just an online title. Please?[update: Sorry to get your hopes up, but this update is boring. I accidentally set this to publish yesterday, so overnight it sat in yesterday's news. It's supposed to be published now. As in today. Uh, it's technical, but it needed to be explained in case anyone noticed this news moving around the main page.]

  • GDC 07: Warhawk's transition into a Network title

At the Sony blogger's event, Warhawk's Dylan Jobe admitted that the PlayStation Network game doesn't deserve "to be a full priced game." Unfortunately, he admits, it's not his job to set the pricing. The team wanted to make a good product, but there were a few employees frustrated that the game was becoming a Network-only game. There's a stigma, he noted, and one disgruntled employee left the team due to the misconception that downloadable games are somehow lesser experiences."Crap product will sell like crap, whether or not it's on a shelf or not," Dylan admitted. He thinks that the future of Sony's Network offerings is exciting, especially because it "transcends arcade rehashes." These are "high quality titles" that will allow the company to "earn the player's trust back."Going forward, Sony admits that they're trying to get a "downloadable demo for every title." There is no Warhawk demo in the works now, but the possibility of offering a public beta for trial purpose is still being discussed.

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gaming_news/Warhawk_exclusively_embraces_Online_Multiplayer'; Sony's Warhawk has ejected single-player features in favor of a multiplayer-only battle arena. Sony today announced the game's shift into the PlayStation Network realm, along with several new features designed to highlight the game's new focus. In addition to frenetic air combat, players will find themselves controlling jeeps, tanks, and woefully unprotected infantry units. Several online modes are planned for the final release, some of which will see you fostering flag kleptomania, battling to obtain enemy territory and otherwise blasting other players to unrecognizable smithereens. Warhawk is currently scheduled for a Fall 2007 release on PSN.%Gallery-1945%

  • All your Warhawk Rumors are belong to us

What we mean by the subject line is that the Warhawk rumors are being shot down, no pun intended. Not necessarily shot down as being untrue, but shot down as in... bam! Online multiplayer only, with 32 people. IGN posted a really large preview of the title, citing the positives and the negatives. We'll briefly go over these and let you check out the full story if you're really into this upcoming title. What's good? Lots of weapons, different vehicle types, and greatly improved/sensitive SIXAXIS controls. The fighting is pretty fast-paced, or as they put it, "Battlefield 1942 with the art style of Timesplitters". That's cool. IGN got to control three vehicles in the build they received: the jeep, the tank and, of course, the Warhawk. All of which have many customization options. You can probably figure out how each one handled -- the jeep is nimble but gets destroyed easily. The tank is huge and slow, but pretty tough to stop. The Warhawk is somewhere in between, with crazy sensitive controls to get used to and decent firepower. Oh, you can also swap between ground, air, and foot combat at the touch of a button. Not sure how that's really going to work in a heated battle. What's bad? We don't know if the game's download-only, store-bought, or some combination of both. The single-player mode is gone... while sad, not altogether disappointing. It received only lukewarm reception, but there was a lot of work put into it. In a way, then, it's good they scrapped it so they can focus on what's really going to be great.

  • Rumorang: Warhawk downloadable, now multiplayer-only

1UP staffer Sam Kennedy has aroused last month's rumor that Warhawk has been scaled down into a PlayStation Network e-Distribution title; now apparently multiplayer-only. On his way to preview the game's progress at Incognito's Salt Lake City studios, Kennedy reported to base: "What I do know is that some interesting cuts choices have indeed been made in terms of its scope, and I'm curious to see how they'll go over with people (myself included). What Warhawk has apparently evolved into is a multiplayer-only title featuring ground and air combat that'll be downloadable from PSN."The information is inconclusive, and will remain so until the NDA is lifted (1UP implies that Kennedy's preview will be published by the start of GDC). While the initial rumor framed another blow to PlayStation 3's image, Kennedy has reminded us that "this could actually become a great demonstration of what Sony has in store for us with downloadable games." We'd be willing to buy that if e-Distribution was the original intention, but let's be real, a lot of money will have been flushed away if Warhawk ends up a budget download. For Incognito's sake, the final product better impress.

  • WarHawk -- destined to go the free demo route a la Gran Turismo HD? [update 1]

This is a rumor, so let's not get out our pitchforks and torches yet, you crazy radical radicals! Seriously, the site originating/reporting on this rumor is called the Rumor Reporter. Anyway, it should still be considered, since the game, WarHawk, has had absolutely new news since that demo from way back when at that whatever show. You know the one. You also know our rule of thumb regarding these rumors: an anonymous source from high up in whatever says, etc etc.WarHawk has stalled completely in development. Infighting and lack of direction led to a halt of the game... but... only as a major retail release. There are still plans for taking what's been done on the game, finishing up whatever loose ends exist currently, and releasing the title as a download at the PS-Store. There has been a little controversy on this, as David Jaffe refutes this rumor, but only refutes the idea WarHawk will never be completed, not that it won't turn into a PS-Store item. Take this as you will, but if it's true, that's another high-profile title that's getting kicked between the legs and left to cry in the gutter. Sort of. We can still play it, eventually, either way.[update: Rumor Reporter ran a follow-up and it seems WarHawk for the PS3 is indeed turning into a PS-Store release, but will probably still feature 16-person online dogfights. Cool.]

  • Rumor: Warhawk to become PS3 download [update 2]

Rumor Reporter has confirmed that Incognito's Warhawk is the subject of the site's ominous story posted early this morning. An anonymous source working on the title has allegedly told Rumor Reporter that development has "stalled completely." Supposed "infighting and lack of clear direction" have led to a swelling budget; in turn, prompting layoffs and employee migration.SCEA has apparently brought in a new director who may be considering a significant change of direction for Warhawk. What was once a high profile title (the first to utilize functioning Sixaxis motion control), may now become a simple downloadable game. Rumor Reporter suggests that Warhawk's four complete missions could be destined for PlayStation Store. Another Gran Turismo HD? Perhaps. But, for now, this is strictly rumor. We did contact Sony for a statement. Here's the predictable reply: "We haven't made any official announcements regarding Warhawk since last year. At this time, we have nothing new to report regarding this title."Update 1: David Jaffe weighs in on the rumor; here and here. [Thanks, Kiel & Robert]Update 2: New info from Rumor Reporter.

Some of you might have seen this before, but for everyone else, here is a nice and quick video of what you may be able to expect from WarHawk. Sorry, no controller action for you to see, but just use your imagination!Overall, the video is too short to critique, but the graphics don't seem that bad (given the quality of the footage and all). It'll be interesting to see how it changes between what we see here and the release date. I wonder if they will try and incorporate their new Eye Toy and the potential motion-sensing apparatus into it.

The cost of Sony and Immersion force feedback litigation... $90 million. One Pelican PlayStation controller bought off eBay... $5. Proving that the motion-sensing technology and rumble feature worked together ten years ago... priceless. This is a video that shows off a decade-old controller that worked with not only PlayStation games like WarHawk back in the day, but also PS2 games like Gran Tourismo. You can thank the independent source of PSM for the find, though the video is admittedly awkward. What does this prove? Obviously vibration feedback and motion-sensing in a controller is not only possible, but it's already been done! So why isn't Sony jumping on this already? Who knows... But it's looking more and more like the bad vibes between Immersion and their patented rumble feature could be keeping Sony from implementing it. With TouchSense claiming to fix it all, and proof that it's been done before, what else could it be?[Thanks boots!]

  • Warhawk, MotorStorm, & other bootleg GDC PS3 videos

So, are you tired of bootleg stills from the upcoming PS3 titles featured at GDC? (Or bootleg videos from current-gen titles like God of War 2?) Well, it looks like you're in luck, as we've got a few fuzzy PS3 videos from Phil Harrison's speech, courtesy of the embargo-ignorin' folks at Multiplayer.it.What we have above is a clip from the developer demo of Warhawk for the PS3. A voiceover describes the "ambient warfare" to be used in the air-combat simulation game, as well as the innovative mix of "Cell-based software rendering with RSX-based hardware rendering" to produce the graphics. For all you coders out there, it was also interesting to note that the programs running on the Cell's SPUs were not written in low-level assembly (easing development, but possibly degrading performance). While we wait until E3, when a playable version of Warhawk was promised to be delivered, here are a few more PS3 videos from GDC that you might find interesting (with a few unfortunately quite incomplete): Streamed video of MotorStorm GDC footage, also with a voiceover. Streamed speeded-up video clips (no audio) of Warhawk, Getaway 3, Lair, the Havoc physics demo from Heavenly Sword, the bullet-ridden car model demo, and even that video concerning Rachet & Clank. Streamed (basically) audio-only video from Resistance: Fall of Man. • More airborne PS3 launch titles

The big man Jack Tretton, COO of SCEA, has dropped the word about a couple of aerial lunch titles we could see on the PlayStation 3. Factor 5 is currently slaving over Lair, while an internal development team at SCEA is working on Warhawk. The latter is even playable at this point proving that developers are pushing hard for a solid launch library.
