They're small, agile, and quick. Of course, they're still tanks, so it's all relative. Wargaming.net brings us a first look at light tanks in their newest trailer video for World of Tanks. The trailer features in-game footage of light tanks in action, showcasing their maneuverability and speed. They're a valuable tank class to have for flanking, scouting ahead, and rushing enemy bases. This is only the first of several such trailers, according to producer Nick Katselapov: "In World of Tanks we offer the utmost variety of fighting vehicles by introducing different classes of tanks and artillery. With this video we are launching a series of trailers about each class of machines represented in the game." Take a look at the first video, and we'll keep our eyes peeled for the next in the series!

Game developers who can laugh at themselves are a lot of fun, but game developers who laugh at other games are a veritable barrel of monkeys. Enter Wargaming.net, the team behind the upcoming World of Tanks MMO. Their newest trailer, simply titled World of Tanks Teaser #3, spends the majority of its minute-and-a-half running time taking pot-shots at CCP's EVE Online. The trailer, sporting a decidely tongue-in-cheek style, shows the months of work ostensibly necessary to upgrade your EVE-like spaceship, all of which goes to pot in seconds as it enters combat for the first time. While unorthodox game marketing campaigns are nothing new (remember Global Agenda's No Elves?), it is rare to see a firm directly reference a competitor. Check out the new World of Tanks teaser after the cut or on YouTube.

As development continues on the upcoming heavy-metal explosion-fest, World of Tanks, the team at Wargaming.net has rolled out an update to their website, creating a nice two-pronged site for those curious about the game. The first half of the newly updated site is the promo site, which contains screenshots, exclusive video and trailers, and links to all manner of interviews from various news outlets focused on the MMOGsphere. This first half of the site will also eventually feature a fansite kit, and the "Tankopedia," which will give players all the details and art for the 150 different tanks that will be in World of Tanks. Meanwhile, the second World of Tanks site is the community portal, offering a place to hang out for those who are already familiar enough with the general game, and are planning on heading towards the fields in their rolling fortresses. This portal is an updated version of the original, offering news, forums, polls, and the normal goodies one can expect in an MMO site. On this side of the portal, you'll also find a feed for contests, and the ability to address your questions directly to the folks at Wargaming.net. So, if you've been waiting to hear more details, check out the two new parts on the World of Tanks split site -- then pop over to the forums and leave your questions for the developers!

While the idea of a tank-based MMO might come across as a little odd to some people, World of Tanks has really shaken things up in its European-only closed beta test. Originally intended as a hardcore MMO for tank enthusiasts and PvP aficionados, interest in the intense, PvP-focused tank MMO skyrocketed in Russia and Europe, with over 40,000 players participating in the closed beta test, including even a few hundred American players who couldn't wait for the US beta coming up in a few weeks. We got to sit down with Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net, and discuss just why people are flocking to the tank-themed MMO, and the various changes they needed to make to accommodate a wider audience.

  • Details announced for clan wars in World of Tanks

    06.03.2010

As development continues on World of Tanks, Wargaming.net has been offering more detailed information on gameplay and design. The latest news is all about clan wars, the World of Tanks version of PvP. Clans of 50-100 members will duke it out throughout hundreds of provinces on a global map of 1940's Earth, fighting for control of territory, monetary rewards, and in-game benefits such as special tanks and ammunition. Nick Katselapov, the producer of World of Tanks, explains the overall goal of clan wars: "We are not going to reinvent the wheel with the clan wars, we are trying to introduce a deep strategic layer into the game by adding a blend of our own innovative ideas and features from such timeless videogame classics as Civilization or Total War series with comprehensive trade relations and economy, well-thought-out diplomatic system and immersive inter-clan warfare. However, unlike traditional strategy games, in World of Tanks the way of your clan to global superiority will be paved with myriads of online battles against hundreds of other teams and thousands of real people, not just AI controlled bots." World of Tanks is currently scheduled for a fall 2010 release.

  • World of Tanks releases "development trees" for in-game tanks

World of Tanks is a game that's caught the attention of many MMO gamers thanks to its unusual approach. It's not your standard fantasy or sci-fi game, it's a WWII-themed game that puts you in the driver's seat of a tank. Take your pick: "...your arsenal includes more than 150 armored vehicles from America, Germany, and the Soviet Union, carefully detailed with historical accuracy." The latest news on World of Tanks is a set of detailed charts on that arsenal. These "development trees" -- one for each of the three countries -- outline the journey from your basic starter tank to the ultimate dream tank. The exciting thing about the development trees is the use of some lesser-known designs, something that enthusiasts are sure to appreciate. Producer Victor Kislyi says: "In our game we are in a way trying to expand beyond the borders of real history by introducing some models of weaponry that were not mass-produced and existed only on paper or were used in a limited number of battles. Thus, we give our fans a chance to see what the war would have been like if it hadn't been finished in 1945 or the evolution of tank-construction had gone in a different direction." The current development trees are for Soviet, German, and American tanks. If you're hoping for a greater variety, hang in there because Wargaming.net plans to add more nations after release. World of Tanks is scheduled for release this fall.

Once again, Thursday has come, with Friday just around the corner. (We'll not discuss the two weeks in April of 1995 where Friday slept in until Sunday morning.) That means it's time for another MMO Report, and, like always, it highlights some of the latest and greatest news in the MMO world. Which, of course, means that this week it has to talk about the sparklepony. That's not the only piece of news on the deck this week, of course. There's talk about the inimitable World of Tanks, followed shortly thereafter by discussion about Virtual Island Entertainment at the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Lord of Ultima's release on Tuesday and rumors of BioShock being made into an MMO fill out the report. Well, and a dive inside Casey's mailbag, which is everything you've come to expect from it. That may not be a good thing. Take a look after the break for the video, and keep your eyes here for another installment of the MMO Report every Thursday from G4TV and Massively.

If you've been waiting to see more of the heavy-metal thrashing MMO World of Tanks, then we've got a treat for you. The newest video from the team over at Wargaming.net shows off some of the sweet visuals that players can expect to see in this explosive upcoming game. Aside from just showing off tanks blowing each other into next year, it also shows off how much time and detail the team has put into recreating some of the the 150 WWII tanks that the game features. From long-range guns to closer-range weapons, this looks to be a pretty creative use of enormous rolling machines in PvP. How the mechanics will roll out (no pun intended) isn't quite clear, but it's still a tasty look for those who can't wait to get on the field and blow things -- and other players -- to bits. The video awaits you behind the break, so be sure to click on through if explosions and huge hulking behemoths of steel are your thing!

  • New World of Tanks teaser video and screenshots

    04.02.2010

The big question with World of Tanks is really simple and yet daunting: will they feel like proper tanks? Slapping treads and a turret on something that handles like a Toyota Corolla isn't really going to work in terms of developing a properly tank experience. (A Ford Crown Victoria is getting closer, but still not there.) Since we have yet to get our hands on the actual game for any playtime, most of what we have is speculation, but a bevvy of new screenshots and a new trailer at least start in the direction of answering the questions. Pictures of the game continue to impress, with the tanks having an appropriately worn look and a sense of weight. The city layouts seen in this gallery also suit the era of the conflict nicely. The trailer, on the other hand, gives a strong suggestion that the game is edging closer toward preserving the "feel" of tanks rather than a strictly simulation approach -- probably a good thing, since actually playing three characters cramped in a metal box wouldn't be quite as much fun. Take a look past the break for the second World of Tanks teaser trailer! %Gallery-89571%

Big guns. Thick armor. Exploding shells. Massive behemoths duking it out over territory. It's just another day at the (Omaha) beach in World of Tanks. Following the announcement of this free-to-play action MMO and a brief overview of how leveling will work in the game, we were eager to sit down with Wargaming.net to pry open the hatch on the details of this vehicle-based title. Happily, Mike Zhivets was kind enough to sit down with us and chew that fat regarding World of Tanks. Hit the jump to see why the game is based in the WWII era, how many types of tanks are on tap, and just how much damage can one tank pour out.

  • The Daily Grind: What's the most important part of the trinity?

    by
    Eliot Lefebvre
    Eliot Lefebvre
    03.14.2010

While the structure of the jokingly-named "holy trinity" in MMOs -- tanks, healers, and damage dealers -- isn't universal, it's certainly common enough to be recognizable. Even in games without pre-defined classes, such as Champions Online, have a group structure oriented toward the three roles. But you can't have classes without a struggle between them, and there's always a discussion in relation to the trinity about which part is the most important. Tanks point to their relative scarcity and the pressure of their job, Healers point to their relative scarcity and the importance of their job, and DPS points to the fact that healers and tanks can't keep their stunts up forever if nobody is killing the target. So where do you fall in this debate? Which part of the trinity do you think is the most important to a group's success, and which one is the most superfluous? Do you think that (by astonishing coincidence) the role you play most frequently is the most important one, or do you think it's lower on the scale and you play it for other reasons?

  • A look at leveling in World of Tanks

    03.12.2010

World of Tanks is in a class by itself -- if you want to play a vehicle-based MMO focused around motorized armor units, there simply isn't another option available. And while there were more than a few jokes at the time of its announcement, successful games with a strong vehicle focus exist already. But the core of a game like this is going to be the vehicles themselves, both their diversity and their interesting traits to set each one apart from its peers. The developers have released the access trees for all three main nations in the game -- Germany, the USA, and the USSR -- giving hopeful players an idea of what they can use to thunder about the countryside. Spanning the period between World War II and the Korean War, the list is fairly exhaustive, showcasing the diversity of tanks on the battlefield. The German progression path even includes the Maus, an experimental tank of absurd size that should please fans of bizarre WWII machinery. And if rolling around in a two-story tank doesn't get you excited, well, you're probably not the target audience. All three progress charts can be found on the official site for World of Tanks.

Hot on the heels of the announcement about the upcoming World of Tanks MMO comes the first interview about the game. MMORPGItalia chatted with producer Victor Kislyi yesterday to get the scoop on how exactly this new game is going to work. The site asked a broad range of questions, cutting straight to the chase right at the beginning: "...why should I play your game instead of another one?" It gave Kislyi a good chance to tell fans exactly why he thinks this game will fill a gap in the MMO market. The game is PvP only ("We do not intend to make a PvE mode...") and players have the opportunity to participate in large scale PvP battles. The full interview is very informative, particularly considering we've not heard much about World of Tanks otherwise. It's worth a look, so head over to MMORPGItalia to see the whole thing.

  • World of Tanks rolls onto the MMO battlefield

Who needs a human avatar when you can just roll around in a tank all day? That's the idea behind World of Tanks, a new MMO wargame simulation that's putting players behind the pedals of over 130 tanks in World War II. While the game has just been announced, their website is already featuring a swath of in-game screenshots and their first contest -- design your own tank motto. Players can submit mottos for the tanks at large, or for specific models. If their motto is chosen, they'll win an unspecified gift from the World of Tanks crew. The game appears to be another hybrid title, meshing a tank simulation with an RPG, as you can upgrade and modify your tanks to your heart's desire. Up to 60 players can roll across an instance at once, and the game will feature a territory control system that sounds like Global Agenda's conquest mode. For all of your tank information, check out the game's main website. Also, because no post on tanks isn't complete without a bad pun, "Tanks for reading Massively.com."
