HP Palm quietly debuts new HP Palm logo
We don't know how this one slipped past us, but somewhere in the past few weeks (on October 19th as far as we can tell), HP and Palm's logos got together to form what you see to the left: the HP Palm logo. The new, hybrid logo is on both Palm's website and Facebook page, so this should quell any fears that the world might lose Palm's branding all together. We don't know what you think of the new logo -- personally, we were a little partial to our own mock up.
HP Envy 17 3D laptop now available starting at $1599
If you've been kept awake at night wondering when the HP Envy 17 3D laptop would finally be available for purchase, well you'll have sweet dreams tonight. HP's officially thrown this bad boy up on its website for all those out there whose laptops are just too... two dimensional. If you've forgotten, the Envy 17 3D boasts a 17.3-inch 3D Ultra BrightView display, packs AMD's 3D tech, and it comes with active shutter glasses. Specwise, you get a choice of Intel Core i7 processors, ATI Mobility Radeon graphics, a wide range of hard drive options and Windows 7 operating systems. The base configuration comes with a $1,599 price tag. In other HP availability news, the Wireless TV Connect device, which will stream 1080p video from your laptop to your HDTV, is also up for order for $199.99. HP Envy, dv8 Quad, Mini 311, and numerous other Windows 7 machines now available to order
Since today really needs a good heap of news to somewhat balance out yesterday's glut, HP has updated its online store to give it an abundance of new and revised Windows 7 machines, including the Envy series (Beats edition and all), Pavilion dm3 with AMD Neo or Intel CULV chips, Core i7-packing dv6t/ dv7t / dv8t Quad editions, and the not-so-netbook CQ61. We're still not seeing the previously-leaked dm1 ultraportable anywhere, but the Mini 311 and a slightly updated Mini 110 are, with the option to jump from Windows XP to 7 for a cool $50 / $30 respectively. Most everything in the store, desktops and laptops, has been updated to at least include Windows 7 as the standard shipping OS, and while all claim free 2-day shipping, estimated shipping dates begin sometime the week after 7's Oct 22nd launch -- no early chances here, folks. Browse the read links and keep an eye on the shiny red "new" icons (no flashing GIFs, we're afraid) for the entire revised lineup. Update: As a number of you have pointed, the Envy product page is a bit, well, sloppy. Typos and missing commas notwithstanding, it seems to biggest laugh is the cost of customization, i.e. $800 more to downgrade from a 500GB HDD to 320GB or 250GB (same price), or $900 more to downgrade from 6GB or 4GB of DDR3 memory. Acer fulfills prophecy, overtakes Dell as number two PC maker worldwide (update)
As if on cue, here's some new data research firm Gartner lending credence to Lanci's boasting. Looks like Acer has leapfrogged over Dell for the number two spot in global market share for the third quarter of 2009, from 12.5 to 15.4 percent of the Big Pie Chart™. Meanwhile Dell is just below at 12.8 percent, and HP is sitting happily atop with a 19.9 percent ownership. Update: Let us adjust our glasses a bit. According to the charts, Acer is number two in worldwide PC sales, not in US as this previously reported. Stateside, the company is sitting at number three at 13.9 percent, behind HP (25.7 percent) and Dell (26.2 percent). Apologies for the confusion, the person responsible for eyesight has been subsequently sacked, the person responsible for the sacking has been sacked, etc.
Leaked AT&T presentation confirms remaining WinMo releases for 2009, that employees can't spell 'proprietary'
Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 release is just a month away, and so too are the first phones that will utilize it. Boy Genius Report has managed to get its hands on one slide from a recent AT&T concall confirming a partial list of the handsets set to ship with the new, improved, more finger-friendly flavor of the OS, and even a few models that will be upgraded to it. Two from Samsung, the Epix and Jack, will receive version updates in October, while HP's Obsidian, earlier targeted for November, seems to have been pushed back to December, and LG's Monaco similarly has slipped to November. HTC's Fortress (a.k.a. the Pro2), however, will apparently be ready with bells on next month. As will we, dear readers. As will we.
Acer Ferrari One hands-on, and more from AMD's VISION event
Despite the infamous logo and hot red lid, Acer's Congo-based Ferrari One "ultrathin notebook" (read: netbook) managed to blend in rather well among a number of other laptops (at least 15, by our count) on display at AMD's VISION event yesterday. The chassis felt pretty sturdy and the keys had the right amount of bounce... and we'd love to tell you more, but like all but a handful of portables on display, it was resolved to play the same video over and over again, refusing to acknowledge our key-pressed directives. We also decided to take snapshots of the entire display lineup, although more than a few here are previously-seen models -- it was pretty much just a rebranding, after all. HP's iPAQ K3 Obsidian gets FCC approval enroute to AT&T
Sure, we could beat around the bush and say, "well, the test report calls it an iPAQ and it's got both GSM and HSPA on the 850 and 1900MHz bands, so it's probably headed to AT&T" -- but let's cut to the chase for once, shall we? Despite much of the documentation still falling under confidentiality, HP's latest phone has "AT&T SKU" written right on its publicly-available ID label, so that pretty much settles that. Interestingly, the documentation repeatedly refers to the new WinMo-powered handset as the "iPAQ KB1," but we have every reason to believe this is the K3 Obsidian that's been floating around for a while now. To be fair, we don't know whether that's a go-to-market name -- nor do we know the price or launch date, for that matter -- whatever it's called, we can now take comfort in the knowledge that it'll be 100 percent legal to use on American soil.
HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian lives it up in the wild, sneaks in a stylus for the nostalgic types
There's always been a little chunk of softness in our cold, stone hearts for candybar QWERTY handsets. Stylus interaction? Not so much. That's why it's a little disappointing to see HP's upcoming iPAQ K3 Obsidian handset for AT&T show up with a stylus on board, despite the initial leaked documents we saw that clearly stated otherwise. Still, it's nice to see how Windows Mobile 6.5 can operate under such conditions, and the 2.43-inch screen is OLED, even if it's restricted to a mere QVGA resolution. It appears that a scroll wheel does the duty of shuffling through that honeycomb menu. As far as we know, we're still looking at a November release.[Via SlashGear]
HP triumphantly returns to AT&T with iPAQ K3 "Obsidian"
Tears well up in our eyes when we think back to the early days of Windows Mobile and HP's dominance; in recent years, the company has all but vanished from the scene, trudging along with a handful of poorly-marketed, underexposed devices that haven't launched on any US carrier. Turns out we haven't said our last goodbyes, though, because the iPAQ K3 -- codenamed "Obsidian," seemingly -- is scheduled for November 30 retail availability on AT&T. The device would launch with Windows Mobile 6.5 onboard and feature a 2 megapixel camera (a second cameraless version for high-security businessfolk might be available, too), 256MB of RAM, a half gig of ROM, microSD slot, GPS, triband HSDPA and quadband EDGE, WiFi, 3.5mm headphone jack, and a QVGA display to complement the full QWERTY keyboard. Looks like it won't be the most exciting smartphone on the carrier's shelves, but it might be a sensible choice for businesses and really, really boring people. Mobile author pens 400-page opus on phone
Peter Brett, not happy to simply bide his time on the daily commute with his Kindle, set about intead writing his own, on his iPaq smartphone. The trips between his home in Brooklyn and his work in Times Square were about 45 minutes, or, about 400 words each way. Over the course of two years, his 100,000 word novel took shape and is now in print, and apparently a bestseller in Poland and England. We've seen something similar in the past, but that 384-page effort pales in comparison, and content aside, he should give himself a pat on the back and a big glossy sticker for effort. Here's hoping HP catches wind and ponies up a new set to replace his current and most likely fairly worn device.[Via Switched]
HP confirms support for Windows Mobile 6.5
No big surprises here -- HP's announced for Windows Mobile 6.5 for its future devices, confirming what we already knew: HP is awesome. The company cites WinMo 6.5's "key enhancements to business productivity, personal messaging and mobile Internet capabilities" plus its "new visual appeal" as some of the reasons for its continued love of the OS. We don't have any specific information about upcoming Windows-boasting devices, but we'll let you know as soon as we catch sight of one or more -- because we're here for you. Symbian Foundation keeps on rolling with 14 new members
Support for the Symbian Foundation's upcoming open platform has officially reached a rolling boil with the addition of 14 members to its already-impressive roster, bringing the grand total to 78 companies spanning the range from device manufacturers to carriers, developers, banks, and beyond. Definitely falling into that "and beyond" category would be MySpace, which pledged its support presumably to get its tentacles deep inside the Symbian codebase -- a wise move considering the obvious trend toward mobile social networking. Also notable are the additions of HP, Qualcomm, GPS chipset maker SiRF, and SanDisk. About the only thing left for the group to do now is deliver on its platform promises by pumping out some phones through its partners -- and can you just imagine an S60-based HP phone?
Rogers offers up HP's iPAQ 910c Business Manager for $249.99
If you've been holding off on picking up a new WinMo handset on Rogers, today just might be your lucky day. You know, if you're totally in love with HP's iPAQ 910c Business Manager. Said Canadian carrier is offering up this here phone for $249.99 (down from $399.99) on a 3-year contract, but for those who despise red tape, you can snag it off-contract for $499.99. As for specs, it sports Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, built-in GPS, WiFi, a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution touchscreen, a full QWERTY keyboard, a microSD card slot, three megapixel camera (with video recording possibilities) and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. HP's iPAQ Data Messenger finally up for pre-order
In reality, HP should've made sure that its iPAQ Data Messenger shipped alongside the Voice Messenger back in December, but given that it didn't, we suppose it's a small victory that the handset is finally up for pre-order in the UK today. Of course, getting any halfway intelligent Briton to spend £419 ($593) on this already forgotten WinMo 6.1 device (with Mobile World Congress just weeks away, no less) is a challenge we're thrilled to not be responsible for. HP's iPAQ Voice Messenger on sale on Vodafone UK
We have a sneaking suspicion most Vodafone faithful have been focusing on other matters, but those who've kept HP's iPAQ Voice Messenger in the front of their mind can finally celebrate. Yep, the Windows Mobile-based smartphone -- which is about as "all-business" as they come, might we add -- is finally available for order at Vodafone UK. It can be claimed right now for anywhere between free and £85.11 ($126) depending on plan.[Via coolsmartphone]
HP's iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger get official on Vodafone, hands-on treatment
Given that both the iPAQ Data Messenger and Voice Messenger were spotted on HP's website last night, we didn't exactly need a press release to affirm their ascent into officialdom, but hey, we'll take it. The two WinMo 6.1-powered handsets will soon be loosed on Vodafone in Europe, and starting next month, prospective consumers can buy in for £399 ($677) / £333 ($565) off-contract; as for the subsidized rates, you'll have to hold your horses for those. If you're just interested in the hands-on video, however, you can mosey on beyond the break and mash play.
HP iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger handhelds emerge
Looks like that rumor was mostly spot on, as two new consumer-minded iPAQ handhelds have emerged on HP's website. Without much fanfare, the Windows Mobile 6.1-powered iPAQ Data Messenger and Voice Messenger have been granted dedicated sites, complete with imagery, specifications and recommended accessories. Starting with the touchscreen-heavy Data Messenger (seen above), you'll find a 2.81-inch LED-backlit display (320 x 240), a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR / WiFi, HSDPA, quad-band GSM support, aGPS, a 3.1-megapixel camera and a microSD card slot. As for the Voice Messenger (pictured after the break), it's packing a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 LED-backlit screen, a 20-key "keyboard" and most everything else already mentioned on its big bro. There's nary a clue on pricing or a release date, but we imagine both of those snippets will reveal themselves shortly.Update: We just scored an internal HP doc with prices and ship dates -- expect to see the Voice Messenger for €399 ($532) on November 5th and the Data Messenger for €499 ($665) on November 22nd, both on Vodafone in the Netherlands. HP said to be prepping consumer-minded iPAQ smartphone
Details on this one are about as light as can be at the moment, but The Wall Street Journal has it that HP is aiming to expand its iPAQ smartphone line into the consumer market with a new model that it'll market to both average consumers and corporate users alike. According to "people briefed on the plan," the phone will have both a touchscreen and a keypad and, naturally, it'll run Windows Mobile 6.1 -- oh, and it'll be able to "send and receive emails, and access the Internet." While there's no indication of a price just yet, word is the device will be available in Europe first within the next two months, with a worldwide release to follow sometime thereafter.[Via Gearlog]
HP's Silver smartphone in the wild
After missing its July release target by a country mile, we'd thought the Silver may have been canned -- but nope, she's alive and well, strutting her stuff for a few privileged hands around the world. The HSDPA 7.2Mbps handset with GPS and WiFi takes the original candybar Pearl's wildly successful format and applies a hearty dose of Windows Mobile Standard -- not a concept that's going to appeal to everyone, but for the S740 shoppers of the world, a totally viable alternative.
