Pantech might still be an up-and-comer in the US market, but if you head south of the border, you'll find that they're the fourth largest manufacturer -- this coming just two years after entering the Mexican market through an exclusive agreement with carrier Telcel -- but it looks like they're still aiming higher. The Korean company chose this week to announce not one, not two, but five new models exclusive to Telcel in the Mexican market, most interestingly the PG-6200 clamshell with fingerprint recognition and 2-megapixel cam. Also along for the ride are the PG-1310V, PG-3810, and PG-1810 clamshells, and the PG-1610 slider, all with oddly similar specs: 1.5-inch main display and VGA cams across the board.

For the paranoid among us who find the Diamond Crypto Smartphone a bit out of reach, Pantech's PG-6200 might be just what the doctor ordered. The nondescript clamshell, which dropped not long ago on Pantech's home turf, features a fingerprint scanner to keep the baddies out and just earned the FCC's blessing for a tour of duty stateside. Whether we'll actually see a launch here remains doubtful, but with 20MB of storage, a microSD slot, Bluetooth, and not much else, our (unsecured) hearts aren't exactly broken.

Pantech has just released a new handset for the security-conscious Taiwanese citizen who also wants some pretty capable multimedia features in his/her cellphone. To keep sensitive data out of the wrong hands, the tri-band PG-6200 features a fingerprint scanner rather curiously placed right above the smudge-prone two megapixel camera lens, along with a music player that handles MP3 and AAC files from either the 20MB internal memory or a microSD card. Other nice touches include Bluetooth (no word on A2DP compatibility, though) and JAVA 2.0 so you can get your Opera Mini-on, along with the obligatory email, SMS, and MMS functionality.
