Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com. It looks like Tess Mercer's got more than one hero in her life, but only one of them is running Windows Phone 7. In this week's episode of Smallville, Lois Lane places a call to Tess Mercer, who appears to be packing a white HTC Hero. Oddly enough, though, it's not rocking Eclair. That's right, this Hero's a Microsoft man -- which has us wondering: what OS is Superman running? [Thanks, Rich]

Ah, another peaceful day in Smallville -- or at least it is now, thanks to the heroes in this group who decided to take on Doomsday and successfully stop his diabolical plans. Today's triumphant DC Universe Online image comes to us from Xanthias, who is a member of our very own Massively Overpowered League on Zero Hour! He snapped this peaceful picture after running the hard Smallville alert recently and writes in to explain: "Xanthias can breathe more easily now that Doomsday has been brought down. Smallville is safe once again." We especially like the capture of the hero in the background who appears to be jumping for joy! Have you triumphed taking on a big bad nasty boss recently? If you've snapped a screenshot of it, we want to see it. Just email your image in to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing in the picture. Please make sure your image is at least 1024 pixels wide and has no visible UI in it. We'll post it out here and give you the credit for sending it in! %Gallery-112285%

Because of its idyllic countryside vistas, any DC Comics fan will immediately recognize Smallville, the adopted Earth hometown of Superman. Then there is Doomsday, a DC villain bent on destroying anything and everything simply because he can. With the combination of Doomsday in Smallville, trouble is on the way. That's why it is up to DC Universe Online's many heroes to intervene and make sure that things turn out all right, like Vale, who sent in today's One Shots. He was fighting Doomsday with his friends recently and sends this image from DC Universe Online to us: "[It's] just another day in Kansas. This is a pic from our league on Silver Age (EU), fighting Doomsday in Smallville." We love to know what you're up to. If you haven't sent in an image for some time, snap one this weekend! Email your screenshot to us here at oneshots@massively.com along with your name, the name of the game, and a description of what we're seeing. We'll post it out here for everyone to check out and give you the credit for sending it in. %Gallery-112285%

  • New video for DC Universe Online shows off Smallville

So you know DC Universe Online launched, but you might still be on the fence about picking it up. Or maybe you're already sold and just want an idea of what to look forward to in the game. Either way, the newest preview trailer from the development team gives a picture of one of the game's events -- the Smallville Alert, where players are tasked with fighting their way through the hometown of Superman amidst a spreading plague. Lex Luthor has released an agent in Smallville that's mutating the citizens into miniature replicas of Doomsday, leaving heroic players to rescue the town while villainous players try to cover up the event entirely. Culminating with a battle against Doomsday himself, the trailer shows off the many wrinkles to the encounter as well as the game's action in full swing. DC Universe Online fans or potential fans should watch the video to get a sense of what's rotten in Smallville.

  • SDCC 2010: Part two of our DCUO panel report

Today we have more from the question-and-answer portion of the DC Universe Online panel at the San Diego Comic-Con last week. (Part one of the panel was posted earlier this week.) Panelists included Creative Director Jens Andersen, Game Director Chris Cao, legendary comic book writer Marv Wolfman, Jim Lee, and the voice of the Joker, Mark Hamill. Will there be a mechanic for switching from hero to villain or vice versa? No. You make the choice of hero or villain at character creation, and it can't be changed after that. This is so it is clear to other players in PvP who is on what team. Will current storylines in the DC comic universe affect the MMO? The game will launch "pristine"; that is, the DC Universe in the game will be the popular, well-known one. Wonder Woman will be in her classic costume; Bruce Wayne will be Batman; etc. From there, storylines from the comics may start altering the MMO universe, but at least from the get-go, the game will start with a clean slate. DCUO will be getting its own bi-weekly comic as well.

  • Project Natal makes cameo appearance on Smallville

Did you know that Smallville is shot on location in the future? We weren't aware of this fact until several readers pointed out that Project Natal made an appearance in Friday's episode, "Warrior." Want to see Natal gaming in action (as in, pantomimed by an actor)? Start watching this episode at about the 23-minute mark. The awkward product placement makes an already-awkward date scene super-awkward! "Maybe you need to look ridiculous!" the player says, trying to entice Chloe into a game of Ricochet. Could that be the tagline for the ad campaign? If you want to watch a thrilling yarn about a cursed comic book, that's the rest of the episode.

We didn't get any more details about Microsoft's Project Natal add-on for Xbox 360 from the X10 event, but tonight Smallville viewers got to watch someone else whipping their arms and legs around trying to catch imaginary balls flying out of their TV screen. Short of some actual time gesticulating wildly in front of that motion sensing cam this is the closest thing we've got to actually using it, but as the clip (embedded after the break) shows, girls are likely to be more impressed by someone that can fly. %Gallery-85394%

It looks like Sony and the rest of the Blu-ray crew are ensuring our feelings aren't still hurt from that fiasco a few weeks ago as we're getting 13 titles to choose from this week. Troy: Director's Cut Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season Alexander Revisted: The Final Cut A Few Good Men The Condemned We Are Marshall Deliverance House of 1000 Corpses Viva Las Vegas The Best of Blu-ray, Vol. 1 The Best of Blu-ray, Vol. 2 The Best of Blu-ray, Vol. 3 Jailhouse Rock Not only does this week's releases feature a great assortment of movies any guy would love, it also includes three volumes of The Best of Blu-ray, which feature four classic movies in each set. What really makes these collections great, though, is the incredible savings you get. Each set is currently on sale at $58 at Amazon - that's like getting two movies free!

The first network TV series to see release on HD DVD or Blu-ray, Smallville just gave us a few more reasons to eagerly anticipate the release of the season 5 boxed set. There will be an HDi interactive feature for the season premiere episode "Arrival" -- we suppose Warner can't call it IME seeing as its not a movie, but we're sure they'll come up with something -- and all episodes will be encoded in 1080p, with Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtracks. All this HD goodness comes at a price, $79.98 to be exact; a $20 bump over the standard DVD edition when it hits February 6, 2007. Despite the premium price, after watching a series in HD, going back to DVD quality later isn't our preferred option.Update: VideoBusiness is reporting that the 5-disc set will be available November 28, 2006. Sooner = better. (Confirmed.)[Thanks, TJ]

  • Smallville and The West Wing next TV shows to HD DVD?

Our friends at TheManRoom stumbled upon an interesting bit of information in their Invasion DVD boxed set, an advertisement for Smallville and The West Wing coming soon on HD DVD. Based on the box art displayed, one can assume that they plan on releasing current seasons of high-def shows on the new formats first, then working their way back through the older shows. Whether or not these will be day-and-date releases like The Sopranos remains to be seen, but we'll be keeping an eye out for Lost and 24 boxed sets.

What we're watching: It's a rare appearance for WB on our list tonight. Or should we say CW? Anyway, the folks over at TV Squad have us all jacked up for the 100th episode of "Smallville" which takes flight tonight at 8 p.m. on WB. The 1080i presentation, called "Reckoning", promises to be a doozy and if you've got a shade over two minutes to spare and don't mind spoilers, you can cop a peek over at AOL. Just don't spoil it for Jor-El, Clark or the rest of us with any comments until AFTER the show. Deal? After the jump is our traditional listing of HD programs throughout the night.
