PlayStation owners might not be blessed with Electronic Arts' EA Access subscription program, but the outfit's Peter Moore has a consolation prize for you. Sort of. Starting today at 3 p.m. Eastern / 12 p.m. Pacific, you can download Need for Speed: Most Wanted for PlayStation Vita, Mirror's Edge for PlayStation 3 and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare on PS4, all for free on the PSN Store. Pretty cool, right? But, you can't put this off: when Moore took the stage at today's PlayStation Experience keynote, he said the downloads only last until midnight Pacific tomorrow night -- hopefully you have some free space on your Sony console of choice. If not, well, there's still time to make room. [Image credit: Getty Images]

EA will bring games from its catalog to Sony's video game streaming service PlayStation Now starting next month. As of December 2, five of EA's games will be available to stream starting "around $1 per day," according to PlayStation Blog. The games being added to PlayStation Now are: Mirror's Edge, Mass Effect 2, Dead Space 3, NBA Jam On Fire Edition and Bejeweled 3. Sony kicked off the open beta for its PlayStation Now service in July on PS4 before rolling its open beta phases out for PS3 in September, later arriving on Vita as well as PS TV in October. The streaming service will reach Europe in 2015, with the UK slated to get access to the first beta in the region. EA continues to find ways to leverage its catalog on digital platforms, as it kicked off its own subscription-based service on Xbox One in August, EA Access. Sony previously evaluated EA Access and determined that it "does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect," leading to the service's Xbox One exclusivity. [Image: EA]

Hover: Revolt of Gamers is inspired by Jet Set Radio's "crazy and fun" atmosphere, parkour aspects of Mirror's Edge and the sci-fi vibe of Star Wars – so it's no wonder it reached its crowdfunding goal weeks before the deadline. Hover has raised more than $60,000 of a $38,000 goal, with 23 days to go. It's an open-world, futuristic-city freerunner that makes you the leader of a group of Gamers rebelling against the anti-video game laws controlling the city. You're tasked with freeing incarcerated allies, infiltrating government control centers, recovering confiscated gaming consoles and ultimately dethroning the mayor. Hover has nonlinear missions and multiplayer components, and it's in development for PC, Mac, Linux, PS4 and Xbox One, with support for Oculus Rift. Hover comes from three developers at Midgar Studio: Marine Baron, Pierre Raffali and Charles Vesic. "Our goal is to develop innovative games with a gameplay that pushes back the limits of the genre, resting on creative artistic directions," Midgar's Kickstarter bio reads. "It's out of question for our studio to restrict itself to a specific register. Our goal is to revisit the entire genre, dusting off some, hijacking others and creating totally new, still-unseen concepts." [Images: Midgar Studio]

CCP has announced its new Executive Producer for the multiplayer dogfighting shooter EVE: Valkyrie; Owen O'Brien is joining the team based at the company's Newcastle studio. O'Brien previously hails from the development studio DICE (owned by publisher EA), where he had a long tenure leading the production of the first-person action game Mirror's Edge. EVE: Valkyrie, set for release in 2014, utilizes virtual reality to give players the sense of being a real pilot in an EVE Online spaceship. On his appointment to this new position, O'Brien said: "The opportunity to work with a focused, talented and passionate team at the forefront of game-changing technology is a dream scenario for me. But it's not just about the technology. This was a project born out of a genuine passion for gaming, and that shows in what the team has already achieved." [Source: CCP Games press release]

Many of us at Joystiq were excited by the long-awaited announcement of the Mirror's Edge next-gen reboot, as was UK parkour production house Ampisound, who put together this hugely impressive head-cam vid of Neil Cointet leaping about the rooftops of Cambridge. We also reacted to the news by skipping across incredibly narrow ledges a mere 60 feet away from our certain deaths, but sadly we forgot to record any video of it. Sorry!

  • Mirror's Edge reboot held back by DICE, not EA

Fans have wanted a follow-up to Mirror's Edge since the original game hit shelves in 2008. Why then has it taken more than four years for that follow-up, which was constantly teased and hinted at, to be officially announced? According to Patrick Bach, executive producer at developer DICE, it's because the studio didn't have a strong enough pitch to sell to parent company and publisher EA. In an interview with VideoGamer.com, Bach said that DICE didn't pitch the Mirror's Edge reboot - often referred to as Mirror's Edge 2 despite not being a sequel - until they were happy with it. "... I think we are the bad cop in most cases when it comes to scrutinizing ideas and IPs and features, or whatever it might be," Bach said. "We would not try to pitch something that we didn't believe in, and that takes time." Bach also spoke well of EA and its treatment of IPs like Mirror's Edge. "... in general, EA is very positive about us, like [asking us], 'What do you want?', instead of someone telling you, 'Build this, do that'." The Mirror's Edge reboot is slated for both next-gen consoles, as well as PC, and will release "when it's ready."

  • Humble Origin Bundle launches with Dead Space 3, BF3, Burnout Paradise Ultimate, Mirror's Edge and more

Huh, well would you look at that! It's a Humble Bundle, only it's made entirely out of EA games. Weird! Specifically, a dollar or more will net you Dead Space, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, Crysis 2 Maximum Edition, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space 3 and Medal of Honor. Paying above the average (currently hovering around $5) also unlocks Battlefield 3 and The Sims 3 "+ Starter Pack." Steam keys are available for Dead Space, Burnout Paradise, Crysis 2, Medal of Honor and Mirrors Edge, while the rest of the games on offer can only be delivered as Origin codes. Unlike most Bundles, however, which are split three-ways between a charity, the publisher/developer and the Humble folks, the Humble Origin Bundle is only being split between charities and the Humble Bundle organizers – EA takes no cut. The Humble Bundle folks have already tweeted that this bundle has surpassed $100,000 faster than any other in its history, so things seem like they're off to a good start for a good cause.

Well, you've been asking for it and DICE is delivering: a new Mirror's Edge is coming in 'when it's ready!' Even though we've got little detail to run with, it's a safe assumption that it'll be coming to both PS4 and Xbox One when it does arrive. We don't even have a launch window, but we'll say this: we're excited and so too was the audience. Of all the games powered by Frostbite 3, this much anticipated sequel got the biggest cheers. Now all we've got to do is wait, ever so impatiently, for EA to deliver the goods next year -- check after the break for the preview trailer and details.

The Mirror's Edge follow-up is real and it's coming from DICE and EA "when it's ready," according to the trailer shown at EA's E3 press conference today. It runs on Frostbite 3. EA launched Mirror's Edge in 2008 on the Xbox 360 and PS3, and later on PC. Since that release, fans have clamored for a sequel and found hope in scattered rumors over the years. The most recent, most concrete rumor was an EA help page for Mirror's Edge 2 that went live briefly a few weeks ago. It looks like dreams do come true. Update: EA's press release reveals the new Mirror's Edge is a reboot for the franchise, and that it's coming to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. %Gallery-190957%

  • The Daily Grind: Have MMOs gone as far as they can go?

    by
    Jef Reahard

Do you ever feel like MMOs have gone as far as they can go? I don't mean to be a downer, especially on a Monday, but occasionally I'll play a single-player title that knocks my socks off and -- as an incurable MMO fan -- the first thing I think of is could/should this be made into an MMO? And usually the answer to that question is no, it can't be done because of technical limitations, latency, or lack of gamer interest. Over the weekend I played Mirror's Edge, a first-person platforming thing that I missed way back in 2009. I fell in love with the free-running, the expansive environments, and the vertigo-inducing perspectives and I realized, sadly, that all of those things and many more simply aren't in the cards for MMOs. I know that not everything has to be an MMO, but I'd love to experience Mirror's Edge with a persistent world behind it, as well as share it with my MMO-playing buddies. What about you, Massively readers? Do you think MMOs have gone as far as they can go, or do you think we're in store for anything new and exciting beyond continual refinements to the existing formula? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

A help page for Mirror's Edge 2 emerged on EA's website this morning, before it was promptly removed. We took the above screencap of the page, which was live at this URL. Today's discovery follows the game popping up on Xbox One listings (also removed now) on Amazon's German and Italian portals, and of course a few years of pseudo-confirmations and protracted speculation that DICE's 2008 first-person platformer is getting a sequel. With E3 just around the corner, maybe Mirror's Edge 2 is summoning up the courage to make the jump into official-dom very shortly.

  • EA: DICE doesn't want to be a 'Battlefield factory'

DICE's Stockholm studio has 300 people and no, not all of them are working on Battlefield content, EA Games Vice President Patrick Soderlund tells OXM. DICE launched Mirror's Edge in 2008, but since then it's been all Battlefield, all the time, with Battlefield 4 scheduled for beta next fall.Asked whether taking a risk on a Mirror's Edge-type game is worth it when Battlefield is so lucrative, Soderlund responds, "Well it depends, right? Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. It's also important for us – the DICE guys are roughly 300 people in the Stockholm studio; not all of them are working on Battlefield things, and that's intentional, because we don't want to become a Battlefield factory."One way to circumvent the transition to "Battlefield factory" is to develop a sequel to Mirror's Edge – which is exactly what former Battlefield executive producer Ben Cousins says DICE is doing. "It is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror's Edge 2 is in production at DICE," he tweets. It's worth noting that Cousins isn't with EA anymore, but he is based in Sweden.
