Shoot actual fire from your eyes with this 'Cyclops' helmet
There are good and bad ideas in the DIY annals, then there's this X-Men inspired helmet that lets lets you shoot flames from your eyes. Developed by YouTube user "Sufficiently Advanced," the "Cyclops Visor" is simply a welding helmet with a fuel tank, pump, nozzles and pilot lights. When activated by a switch on the side, it shoots a jet of flames mixed with fuel a distance of around ten feet. As demonstrated in the video (below), that makes the wearer just like Cyclops from X-Men, if that superhero couldn't see at all and was only a danger to himself.
Snapchat does something useful, lets you buy 'X-Men' tickets
Although they're sitting out Comic-Con, 20th Century Fox is going big with their Snapchat-based promotions for Friday's release of X-Men: Apocalypse. While users will notice Snapchat's filter lenses are all mutant-themed today, the movie studio has also pulled out another super power: letting users buy tickets directly from Snapchat ads that show up in the Discovery section.
20th Century Fox will skip Comic-Con to avoid trailer leaks
One of Comic-Con's biggest draws is always the exclusive trailer screenings for upcoming superhero and science fiction flicks. But now more than ever, those teasers are being recorded and leaked online, much to the frustration of Hollywood studios. The situation is so bad that 20th Century Fox, according to TheWrap and the LA Times, has decided to pull out of this year's convention. That means no sneaky-peeks of upcoming projects like Wolverine (3?), Maze Runner: The Death Cure or Assassin's Creed.

For some of us, the closest we'll ever get to becoming Wolverine is making a pair of cardboard claws, growing a bitchin' set of sideburns and developing a cigar-chewing habit. The more industrially inclined, however, make sets of air-powered, razor-sharp talons that can cut through a watermelon like... Well, how an adamantium knuckle-knife might slice through watermelon. YouTube user ColinFurze fabricated a set of 12-inch stainless steel claws that extend and retract thanks to a set of palm-mounted toggle switches that connect to compressed-air tank on his back -- no bicep-flexes required here, folks. If you're feeling particularly inspired and/or have a welder and some plate-stock handy, bub, Furze has posted a how-to video in addition to the clip where he joyously hacks apart cardboard and what looks like a Mystique blow-up doll (seriously). Even better, he's promised more X-Men-themed videos come next Thursday. Try not to go berserk before then, would-be Weapon X.
Perfect Ten: Consequences of living in an MMO world
Escapism and daydreams are, in my opinion, wonderful and part of what fuels our creativity and excitement. I mean, most of us probably engage in some form of escapism just by the act of playing MMOs. These are settings that make us heroes, gives us clearly defined objectives with assured rewards, and continually dole out progression and backpats. Am I the only one who purrs when the game says, "Well done, chap?" But there's always that next level of escapism where the mind starts to fantasize about leaping through the monitor and living in these vivid, exciting worlds. Consider the amount of homework or responsibilities or job tasks you have on your plate, and then consider dropping it all to spend your life as an adventurer in Azeroth, Norrath, Tyria, or Eorzea. Wow, that would be such a relief, wouldn't it? Nay, say I -- it would be a nightmare from which you would be unable to escape. You would most likely star as an ironic mishap victim in a Twilight Zone episode. Today we're going to look at 10 consequences of trading the real world for a virtual one.

Marvel offers over 700 free first issue digital comics, might involve great powers and responsibilities
Looking to revise the whys, hows and who's who of the Marvel universe? Well, the movie-spinning comic book company wants to help you out, offering hundreds of first issue editions across the company's entire history. The free digital editions will cover perennial favorites like Spider-Man, the X-Men and Avengers, as well as slightly less mainstream hits and spin-offs. The promotion kicked off yesterday and -- tying in with the company's presence at SXSW -- will run until 11PM ET on Tuesday. The titles can be downloaded through either Marvel's official comics app or its web-based digital comics shop, although it appears US readers are having more luck downloading the digital comics -- we're getting error messages when trying to access it elsewhere. Of course, if you've already signed up to Marvel's Unlimited subscription service, there might not much here to pull you in, but this limited-time offer is unashamedly courting new readers and comic dabblers. If that sounds like you, start hunting down those hundreds of freebies at the source.
HeroClix TabApp adds DC Comics figures
The HeroClix TabApp is an interesting, if not all that impressive, app for the iPad that uses HeroClix figurines in conjunction with iOS to make a game featuring the superheroes of the HeroClix series. When it first launched earlier this year, the app featured only Marvel heroes. But apparently the series is doing quite well, because HeroClix has now added some DC heroes to the mix. There are two packs available. One includes Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, and the other is a "Dark Knight Rises" special featuring Batman, Bane and Catwoman. And the app, as you can see above, has been updated with new content for all of the heroes, so if you buy those packs, you can unlock and play the new games and settings. Unfortunately, this app isn't all that great, as I said in the review linked above. But it's good to see that this is getting more popular. Hopefully we'll see more and better interaction between the digital and physical worlds in terms of gameplay on iOS.
X-Men: Destiny coming to consoles in Fall 2011
Activision and Marvel have announced a new X-Men game, due to "invade game consoles" in Fall 2011. X-Men: Destiny has you playing a new recruit amongst comic's motley mutant band, and promises a "branching storyline that features a deep element of choice." Dare we envision a Marvel-fueled Mass Effect? Activision also notes that X-Men: Destiny will grant "players ultimate control of their destiny," which means at least one mutant will have the uncanny ability to spontaneously alter and contradict the contents of a dictionary. The story will be penned by X-Men: Legacy's Mike Carey. You can check out a sparse teaser website now, and get a peek at the game itself during this weekend's New York Comic-Con. We're attempting to confirm the identity of the developer, in light of earlier rumors that suggested Too Human studio Silicon Knights was creating a Marvel RPG.
