Fans of episodic touch-based stealth adventure Republique who've been waiting for more since the second episode debuted in May will be pleased to hear that episode three is slated to launch on October 23. Though previously exclusive to iOS devices, October 23 also marks the Android release of Republique's first three episodes. Republique is the one-touch stealth game from Metal Gear Solid 4 producer Ryan Payton and his Camouflaj studio, and its second episode is out now. Titled "Metamorphosis," the new episode again tasks players with helping Hope to escape from her captors. They can guide the young prisoner to safety by tracking her through security cameras, hacking into computers, and communicating with her on her phone. The second episode also brings new features to the game, including a new 3D map that's also been added to the first episode. There are also new stealth abilities such as seeing guards through walls, but Republique is not all about the mechanics by any means. Camouflag's dark story centers around the mysteries of a totalitarian state, and the first episode won an International Mobile Gaming Award for Excellence in Storytelling. If you're tempted to get in then now's as good a time as any. Camouflag is promoting the release of the second episode by putting the first one on sale, down from $5 to $3. You can add Episode 2 as an in-app purchase for $5, or pay $15 to get a season pass that covers all additional episodes. Or if you'd prefer to wait, the game is also due for release on PC and Mac later this year. [Image: Camoflaj]

Developer Camouflaj's one-button stealth game, Republique, has been granted an International Mobile Gaming Award for the category of Excellence in Storytelling. To celebrate, Camouflaj is discounting the price of Republique by more than a third. The game, normally $4.99, is available on iTunes for $2.99 from now until March 27. Ryan Payton, designer at Camouflaj, was quoted in a press release stating, "We set a high bar for ourselves with the first episode of Republique, so it feels great to see the public's positive response, especially in foreign markets. This is a great start for the franchise and our little independent studio." Republique was successfully Kickstarted back in May 2012, with the first episode of the overall story released on December 19. • Republique: a one-touch stealth game designed by its worst enemies

Ryan Payton's earnest story of Republique's formative days – roughly 600 of them – has a surprising villain. "When you have a vision, sometimes things just don't work out," said Payton, a co-founder of developer Camouflaj. For its first 500 nights of life, Republique, the one-touch stealth game for tablets and phones, just wasn't coming together. Speaking to attendees at the Game Developers Conference, Payton described a frustrating time in which his team of 25 game makers struggled to reach their publicized (and Kickstarted) vision of Republique. It was to be a tense but accessible game, hinged on players guiding a woman out of a cell and away from an intrusive, spying regime. Its forced simplicity led to complications, however, putting its mechanics in conflict with everything from level design to lazy touchscreen swipes. But conflict also helped Republique find its footing. "We decided that we were just going to become the game's worst enemy," Payton said. "We started to bash the game really hardcore." The team got serious about playtesting, and carefully monitored how people were naturally inclined to interact with the game, rather than how Camouflaj decreed in its one-touch vision. "We watched how players were playing the game, and we met them halfway," Payton said. And lazy, misread screen swipes? Camouflaj created its own version of aim assist, but for fingers.

Camouflaj's stealthy crowdfunded game Republique will launch this Thursday, December 19 on iOS. Republique Director Ryan Payton noted in an interview with IGN that the game's PC and Mac versions will arrive next year. Republique earned $555,662 on Kickstarter in May 2012 and features both David Hayter and Jennifer Hale as voice actors. The indie action game, which resurfaced in February with new 3D backgrounds as opposed to its original pre-rendered ones, will cost $4.99 on the App Store. The game stars Hope, "a young woman trapped within a shadowy totalitarian state," drawing inspiration from George Orwell's classic novel 1984. Players take control of "Big Brother," protecting Hope and guiding her through the game by influencing the environment through unlocking doors, powering down lights and tapping phone calls.

  • Republique sneaks past $500K Kickstarter goal with just six hours to spare

The folks at nascent studio Camouflaj must be pretty excited right now, with their first ever project – a Kickstarted game named "République" – meeting (and exceeding) its $500,000 goal with just six hours left until the Kickstarter expires. The Kickstarter nearly met an untimely end when funders plateaued across the past few weeks, but the drive was bolstered by the addition of David Hayter (voice of Solid Snake) and Jennifer Hale (voice of female Commander Shepard) to the game's cast.As of right now, the Kickstarter is sitting at just over $500K, but we expect it'll continue rising until time runs out at 6PM ET.But this is just the beginning, as Camoflaj intends to raise another $500K from separate, non-Kickstarter funding. "We estimate that Republique will cost north of $1 million to complete. After months of meetings and due diligence, we believe that we can raise the necessary additional funds to complete Republique from potential outside investors, but there is some risk that our efforts will be unsuccessful," the game's Kickstarter info reads. Here's hoping that, for the sake of the folks who invested through Kickstarter, Camoflaj is able to raise that extra half million.

Ambitious stealth game République has a long way to go before meeting its Kickstarter goal of $500,000 in its last eight days, but it hasn't stopped the folks at Camouflaj from adding some big names to the game's cast. Today's update reveals both David Hayter and Jennifer Hale will contribute their vocal talents."Hayter will play the role of the head revolutionary in the world of République, and Hale will voice the role of 'The Mentor' – a complex character who knows Hope better than anyone," the Kickstarter page reveals. Hayter is probably best known for voicing Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid games, while Jennifer Hale was the voice behind the female Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series and every other speaking female in video games ever.

The first project from Ryan Payton's Camouflaj is Republique, an iOS action/stealth game of sorts in which you control a network of cameras, lights, and everything else electronic to keep a woman named Hope safe from pursuers. It's like a serious Night Trap."Last year, I decided I was going to stop complaining about the lack of real games on mobile," Payton said in the above trailer, "and start making one." For help making that real game, Camouflaj has turned to Kickstarter, because it's 2012.The developer is seeking $500,000 from backers, with bonuses including the game, a fancy journal designed as a "game companion," and, for the truly wealthy, your likeness in the game and a trip to Camouflaj HQ.

  • Halo 4 creative director Ryan Payton leaves Microsoft, opens Camouflaj [update]

Moving from Metal Gear Solid 4 to Halo 4, ex-EGM freelancer turned game producer Ryan Payton was building a resume of high profile sequels to rest his career on. But before he could help Master Chief finish the next fight, he announced that he was leaving 343 Industries and Microsoft to open his own studio, Camouflaj. "Some people say I'm crazy, but I want to make a game that one billion people play at once, and it's something that hits them harder than a great book or film," Payton says of Camouflaj's future projects, of which there are currently two in development. In 2008, Payton helped launched Metal Gear Solid 4 as assistant producer at Kojima Productions in Tokyo, but when his mother in the US was diagnosed with cancer he decided to move closer to home. After interviewing at "several" studios, he decided on Microsoft, where we now know he was working on Halo 4. Unfortunately, it seems that the Halo he wanted to build wasn't exactly what Microsoft had in mind. "The Halo I wanted to build was fundamentally different and I don't think I had built enough credibility to see such a crazy endeavor through," he told Kotaku in an interview. After seeing friend and Haunted Temple Studios creative lead Jake Kazdal laboring on his own project, Skulls of the Shogun, Payton decided it was time for a change. "I think time is the most valuable thing we have, and I've decided that I'm not going to waste one more day working on something that doesn't speak to my values." Update: Microsoft has released a statement regarding Payton's departure, stating: "343 Industries has assembled an all-star cast of talent working on 'Halo 4' under the design leadership of Studio and 'Halo 4' Creative Director, Josh Holmes. We're excited to tell the next story in the 'Halo' universe with 'Halo 4' as the first game in the Reclaimer Trilogy. Ryan Payton, who left earlier this summer, served as Narrative Designer on 'Halo 4' for 15 months. Armando Troisi was hired as the 'Halo 4' Narrative Director in March, having formerly served as the Lead Cinematic Designer on 'Mass Effect 2.' Ryan has been a great friend and colleague during his tenure at 343 Industries and we appreciate his contributions to the team. We wish Ryan the best in his new game development venture."
