How to watch the Super Bowl: A cord-cutter’s guide

We all know you don't have to be a fan of American football to watch the Super Bowl. The NFL's Big Game, which this year will be played between the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Rams, goes beyond the sport. Even if you don't like who's playing (we're looking at you, Tom Brady), the Super Bowl is the perfect excuse to get together with friends and enjoy a day full of seven-layer dip, chicken wings and, of course, booze. Thankfully, in 2019, the NFL is making it easy for everyone in the US to watch Super Bowl LIII, even if you don't have a cable or satellite account.

CBS is determined to make the most of the NFL's loosened streaming rules. The broadcaster has revealed its streaming plans for Super Bowl LIII, and you'll finally have the option to watch on mobile devices without a sign-in through CBS Sports' website and mobile apps. You'll also have mobile access through authenticated apps from CBS' cable, satellite, telecom and streaming TV partners. To no one's surprise, you can watch through All Access on mobile if you're a subscriber.

Today, CBS launched CBS Sports HQ, a new sports-focused streaming network meant to be complementary to CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network programming. The 24-hour, free streaming network will feature sports news, game previews, highlights and post-game analysis and is accessible through a number of platforms at launch. Along with being able to jump into live programming, CBS Sports HQ visitors will also be able go back and watch previous segments with the network's DVR-like functionality.

CBS is launching a streaming sports channel this year

CBS isn't going to lean primarily on All Access to fuel its streaming ambitions -- it's catering to the sports crowd, too. Company chief Les Moonves has teased plans for a "24/7" live streaming sports channel that will launch later in 2017. Most details are still under wraps, but it'll be modeled around CBSN and even piggyback on its infrastructure (to reduce costs, naturally). That suggests it'll be part of 'skinny' programming bundles through internet TV providers, although it's not certain which ones.

All signs point to a completely revamped Apple TV being in the works. For now, however, the growth of the platform doesn't appear to be slowing down -- even as new hardware and software loom on the horizon. Today, CBS Sports and USA Now launched their on-demand streaming channels on Apple TV, bringing even more entertainment content to owners of the $69 set-top box. While neither channel offers access to live shows, there's still plenty to watch from both networks, including full episodes and a robust set of shorter length videos. If you're in the US, you should see these on your Apple TV's home screen now -- otherwise they will be showing up soon.

Finally catching up to the tablet generation, CBS has released an updated version of its CBS Sports app that comes complete with full iPad support. On top of that significant upgrade, the app now also features live video for a variety of sports including NCAA basketball, college football and the PGA Tour. Until today's addition of live video, the app was designed solely as a portal for checking scores and stats for just about every sports organization you can think of. The early user reviews of the updated app appear to be almost universally positive. If you're looking for a free app for live sports, it seems CBS is on top of its game. [via 9to5Mac]

  • March Madness streams to more platforms in 2012, but not everything is free

Last year CBS and Turner Sports brought every game of the NCAA Division 1 Men's Basketball Tournament home in HD on four cable channels, and streaming for free to PCs and iOS devices. While the broadcast plans remain the same this year, if you want to stream the 41 games broadcast on cable networks then you'll need to subscribe to an affiliated TV provider (all the major guys except Time Warner) and log into the TNT, TBS, or TruTV website on your Windows PC or Mac. For the other 41 games broadcast on CBS, CBSSports.com is your (free) online resource. Live streaming on mobiles (over WiFi or 3G) has been extended to the Android platform for the first time, however after being offered for free last year the rebranded March Madness Live app will cost $3.99 this time around, which is still less than the $10 it cost in 2010. Check out the press release after the break for all the details on what's viewable where -- cord cutting sports fans will want to make some alternate arrangements.

  • CBS, Panasonic & DirecTV add US Open Tennis to 3D Demo Days lineup

Panasonic and DirecTV's n3D channel has added another event to its slate of coverage from Center Court of the US Open Championship during Labor Day Weekend and Finals Weekend. A notable shift for this production is the use of a new combination "Shadow D" camera rig developed by Vincent Pace, which Broadcasting & Cable mentions will allow one operator to control the 2D and 3D cameras at the same time. Panasonic is working with CBS Sports to add new, lower placements for the six 3D camera rigs, and a dedicated production team for the broadcast that will be viewable onsite, on DirecTV's n3D channel (103) and also at any retailers participating in the 3D Demo Days promotion between September 10-12 like Best Buy. According to HD Guru we can expect coverage between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the fourth, but the rest of the schedule is not yet available. This is Panasonic's second 3D tennis event of the season, but likely the first many of us will have a chance to put eyes on, especially if there's another epic Isner/Mahut three day, 11-hour match.

  • DirecTV loading up multi-screen HD coverage of the 2009 Masters

As should be expected by now, DirecTV is readying its interactive TV prowess for the 2009 Masters Golf Tournament from April 9 -12. The Masters Mix channel serves up CBS Sports and ESPN content, along with plenty of leaderboards, hole by hole stats for each player, a trivia me and daily highlight packages for notable player on DirecTV On Demand. We're not seeing much different from last year's implementation (with the exception of a healthy, surgically repaired Tiger ready to take on the field), but we're open to suggestions about how the Masters Experience could get better in 2010.
