The normally quiet development team at Realtime Worlds, the creators of the upcoming GTA styled MMO All Points Bulletin has released a bold announcement regarding their game accompanied by an equally bold screenshot -- APB will be shown at E3 this year.In a statement made to fansite APB Evolved, Chris "Ulric" Dye has said that their showing at E3 will also mark a turning point in the game's media releases, as it will mark the start of a large release of news, activities, and information regarding APB. In addition, the above screenshot, the first of in-game footage, was released to APB Evolved to highlight the character customization features that will be included in the game. We're not that keen on shaved heads, but we certainly would like to wrap our hands around that shotgun. If this is just a taste of what APB has to offer their players, we can't wait to see more.

  • Earthrise question of the week is a call to crafters

Earthrise is the post-apocalyptic MMO being developed by Masthead Studios that will have a game setting quite different from the crumbled, burned out world we'd typically associate with global armageddon. Earthrise is set in a utopian future that's quickly turning dystopian, one that's still rather crumbly on the outskirts to keep that aftermath feel to the game. Beyond the guild warfare and sandbox elements of gameplay Massively has looked at in the past, Masthead Studios is putting a great deal of emphasis on the game's crafting system. In fact, this is the focus of the Earthrise Question of the Week on the game's forums, posted by the game's community manager Moll. However, instead of simply doing a brief Q&A as in other weeks, Moll explains the concepts behind the crafting system before eliciting feedback from Earthrise fans.%Gallery-48760%

Snaboo of Greymane shouted out to the Blizzard posters on the forums. He appreciates that they are being customer focused and social. This elicited positive responses from a handful of blue posters, except Bornakk, who's still grumpy. Some posters disagreed about the attention the blues pay to the community. That they are slow to respond to "serious" questions or that they seem disrespectful of players. Crygil pointed out that in many cases there are several threads on a particular subject. The blues try to address at least one of them, but aren't able to respond in all of the threads on a single topic.

  • Earthrise devs explain interplay of shields, stamina, and energy game mechanics

Earthrise is a post-apocalyptic MMO that's quite a departure from the 'Mad Max' view of a post-civilization world. Rather, the game is one where Earth's technocratic elite survive the global apocalypse via genetic immortality through cloning, and seek to rebuild the world according to utopian ideals. Schisms divide society which leads to outright hostilities and faction struggles, giving Earthrise's players the opportunity to play some very different sorts of characters. The lore of Earthrise is steadily being fleshed out, but we're hoping that the gameplay will live up to expectations. Given that the title is still in early beta testing, we're always looking to get our questions about the game answered. Masthead Studios has been doing just that with their "Question of the Week" forum for Earthrise in which the game's developers answer questions posed to them by the fans. The latest question of the week deals with Earthrise's three major pools: shields, stamina, and energy. %Gallery-48760%

  • Earthrise developers explain siege territory gameplay

    04.28.2009

Earthrise is a sci-fi MMO currently in development at Masthead Studios in Bulgaria, one which aims to merge sandbox gameplay with a post-apocalyptic setting. By all indications, Earthrise will be a game where players can band together to work towards world control, while of course struggling against opposing forces with similar goals. This territorial control between guilds will be a key aspect of Earthrise and the latest 'Question of the Week' on the game's official forums addresses the game mechanics connected with such pursuits. Earthrise community manager Moll has posted "Siege Territory gameplay + defensive structures" which explains how guild bases will be integral in capturing and holding territory, as well as some of the ways these structures will allow guilds to tap the resources of a given territory. In addition, specific structures will allow for mass production, serve as power plants, and provide teleporters for moving troops between territories. There's plenty more info on the advantages of territorial control to be found in the latest round of Q&A's with the developers at Masthead Studios.

There are new massively multiplayer online games on the way which aim to change how we play ship-based sci-fi MMOs, bringing a more dynamic system of combat in space. One of those titles is Black Prophecy from Reakktor Media. 'Fast-paced real-time combat' is something that Reakktor Media emphasizes as one of Black Prophecy's strengths, which should be good news for gamers looking forward to having dogfights with other ships in space. Massively caught up with one of the key individuals behind Black Prophecy this past week, development director Simon Bachmann, who told us about some of the game's specifics. Jim Rossignol from Rock, Paper, Shotgun also got some details about Black Prophecy when he spoke with Reakktor Media community manager Christian Schuett, which is definitely worth a read if you're interested in the title.

Going along with the continuous restructuring of NCsoft West, the European Aion community team has recently been invited to take the long swim across the Atlantic Ocean and join US community manager Liv in Seattle, forming a unified Aion community team.Sebastian "Ayase" Streiffert, the United Kingdom community manager, and Martin "Amboss" Rabl, the German community manager will be flying to the United States, while Loic "Atreid" Claveau, the French community manager, has declined the position in favor of moving to the marketing department in Brighton.Ayase, Amboss, and Atreid have all written blog posts reflecting on their individual decisions, and they can be read over at the Aion Europe community site. Amboss's and Atreid's posts have been written in their native languages, but it's nothing that a web translator can't handle. (And by handle I mean rip to shreds, but at least give you the general idea.)Welcome to the United States, Ayase and Amboss!

  • The Chronicles of Spellborn interview explains game's unique aspects

The Chronicles of Spellborn is a game we've been hearing more about lately. We recently noticed an interview by Nolvadex at the Italian gaming site Gamesource with The Chronicles of Spellborn's lead community manager Pierre-Yves "Mirage" Deslandes. Mirage discusses a relatively smooth European launch for the title and some of the complexities of their publishing deals, insofar as they affect the European market. The challenges of balancing PvE and PvP content in the game comes up, and Mirage also addresses why The Chronicles of Spellborn shipped without an auction house, stressing that a marketplace is indeed on the way. In terms of building upon the game's combat systems, Netherlands-based developer Spellborn NV doesn't plan to make any major changes to the game's combat system, which Mirage states is the trademark and backbone of The Chronicles of Spellborn. Adding greater depth to what's presently offered instead of simply adding more races and classes to the game is clearly a priority for the developers.

Who speaks fluent Klingon, played Counter-Strike competitively, won Star Trek trivia contests, and is the community manager of NCsoft's upcoming MMORPG, Aion? Why it would be Lani Blazier, aka "Liv!"Lani is no stranger to the gaming industry, if you hadn't noticed. Not only does she have all of the accomplishments above, but she's also a graduate of the Game Art and Design program at the Art Institute in Vancouver, BC. Before her new home at NCsoft, she was an assistant producer at Threewave Software, adding her name to six games during her stay there. While she was at Gamehouse, she switched from the production angle to the community angle after being exposed to game communities by a variety of online social games. We happily welcome Lani to the Aion development steam, and wish her and the rest of the team the best of luck with their new game. If you want to know more about her, check out her community profile over at the Aion main site!

  • Demolition coming to Star Wars Galaxies

The sci-fi massively multiplayer online game Star Wars Galaxies has a novel way of getting players to return to the game... by threatening their assets with demolition crews! "Don't give the enemy the satisfaction of calling an airstrike on your property!" is the message Star Wars Galaxies is sending to players with inactive accounts. So what counts as an abandoned structure in terms of this demolition? Sony Online Entertainment Community Manager Valara writes that structures abandoned since July 1, 2008 or longer can be affected. Once demolition commences (on March 3rd of 2009), players will be able to lay waste to the assets of other players and rack up demolition rewards for doing so. Apparently vandalism is a core value of life in the Empire. Check out the full details of the demolition initiative in Star Wars Galaxies in their official announcement, as well as the incentives they're providing to bring you back to the game.

He's worked on other games like EverQuest Online Adventures and PlanetSide, where he will remain as their Community Manager as well. When news of impending server merges in Age of Conan broke in December, it caused a bit of a stir -- particularly in the post's comments. Age of Conan Producer Craig Morrison later said the merges would take place in stages, but then technical issues arose, postponing these changes for roughly a month before Funcom was confident it could go off without a hitch. Earlier today, one month after the initial plan, the first set of servers were merged in Age of Conan: Bloodspire and Hyperborea have now merged into Bloodspire. Apparently AoC's virtual realm did not implode as the worlds were spliced together. Glen 'Famine' Swan, Age of Conan's US Community Manager, jokes, "I'm currently on Bloodspire now watching the global spam." Well there you go, business as usual in Hyborea. For the Age of Conan players among our readership, did the server merge affect you in any way -- be it positive or negative?

Fans of massively multiplayer online games who think fantasy settings are getting a bit stale are looking at other genres to explore -- namely the upcoming sci-fi MMO titles soon to arrive. One such game that we've been keeping tabs on at Massively is Earthrise, a post-apocalyptic MMO currently in development. We recently mentioned that Earthrise would be taking beta signups at the end of 2008, and the team at Masthead Studios kept their promise: Earthrise beta signups have begun. Earthrise's Community Manager, Moll, let prospective players know the details about the stages of beta on the game's official forums. If you're excited about getting an early hands-on with Earthrise, you'll want to check out the Q&A there before going ahead and filling out the beta application, which could get you into the fray on Enterra Island soon.[Thanks Aron]

Players of massively multiplayer online games who are starting to feel the fantasy genre might be a little stale will have some interesting things to look forward to in the coming years, with the surge of science fiction and post-apocalyptic MMOs coming to market. One such title is Earthrise, set in the final refuge of humanity following the rest of the planet's annihilation. Although the game is still in a pre-beta stage of development, the Earthrise developers, Masthead Studios, have been providing status updates to its growing community through monthly newsletters. Issue VII of the Earthrise newsletter is up, and Masthead Studios has some good news for all of the beta hopefuls out there. There will be several stages of beta invites, and they'll begin accepting beta applications at the end of December. First up is a 'friends and family' stage, which will be followed by the first round of closed beta. The message stressed in the announcement is that Masthead Studios is really looking to the community to help them work out bugs and gameplay issues to make Earthrise into a solid title.

  • Rumored four-year, multi-trillion ISK exploit in EVE Online

    by

    12.11.2008

An exploit in EVE Online has come to light that may have some major repercussions for the game. Massively does not have solid confirmation on the details (and allegations as the case may be), as this has just come to light. The exploit was publicized on a third party EVE forum called Scrapheap Challenge, on Wednesday, December 10th. If this isn't a hoax or an exaggerated account of events, how serious an exploit might this be? Very serious, if the details listed prove to be accurate... The exploit was really a bug related to a network of player owned stations (POS) paired with a moon mining operation, which yielded far too much valuable material far too quickly. Four years and an estimated 2.5 to 3 trillion ISK later, the exploit was found and patched, and the offender(s) banned. Given the claimed amount of ISK involved, it's serious enough to potentially have an impact on the game's economy. The individual who posted the details of this exploit remains anonymous, and has only identified him or herself as "anotherone", but tells a story of how the exploit came to be: "I would like to tell you a short EVE story. Today all of my EVE Online accounts were banned. I was sure this day would come. What surprises me is that it took CCP this long to catch up with me. Even though they knew about it." It's that last sentence that is sparking so much response from the playerbase -- anotherone asserts that this issue was actually petitioned to CCP Games back in 2004, and subsequently ignored.Read on for more details on this economic drama.

  • Star Wars: The Old Republic interview with Community Manager Sean Dahlberg

In a recent interview with Allakhazam, BioWare's Sean Dahlberg discusses their newest MMO project, Star Wars: The Old Republic. As Community Manager for the project, Dahlberg was able to give some great insight into the game's storyline and direction, or at least as much as he could say for now.One particularly interesting part of this interview is the discussion on PvP. As Allakhazam points out, the Republic and Sith Empire are not exactly friendly towards each other, so PvP would be an obvious game feature. Dahlberg explains that PvP is definitely part of the game, yet points out that TOR "is not looking to be the jack-of-all-trades game. Instead, we are going to focus on what we do best and make sure the game and all its elements are fun and entertaining." He goes on to explain away what may have sounded like a suggestion that the game will be PvP-heavy by saying, "TOR will offer fun and rewarding gameplay no matter what your play style is. If you're not a PvPer at heart, there are definitely other things within the game to do." Sounds very promising, and we're excited to hear more about the game, and relay it all to you, when more news becomes available.

After making a statement about PvP changes in City of Heroes that didn't sit very well in the development team, community manager Lighthouse has decided to step down from his job and pursue other opportunities outside of NCsoft. Lighthouse had apologized for and retracted the statement made a week prior to his resignation, but the popular rumor seems to be that his departure wasn't a matter of choice. No matter the reason, it's always difficult for a community to lose its liason with a game's development team. With the Issue 13 update just around the corner, we hope that something can be done in order to make sure the players have a voice when it launches.

As soon as players could access them, the official forums went up in flames. Downtime, PvP gear bugs, the mail debacle, and the usual game balance crying. The forums were an utter mess. I think all of us have enough experience with those forums to know that people can't keep things to one thread, and with increased traffic due to downed servers... well, it got ugly.It apparently became bad enough that select forums had to be switched over to Read Only mode for improved accessibility, Zarhym says. I assume this is a response to very, very seriously increased traffic on the official forums. The forums (and the official website) went up and down throughout maintenance today, keeping many players in the dark about what was going on. Communication with the playerbase is one of the primary roles of the community managers, and it's really hard to do that when the forums are in the state they were. I'm a regular poster on my realm forums and it's a bit jarring not being able to post there, but it's for the best.

At Gen Con, we spoke with Turbine's Andy Cataldo, the Community Manager for Asheron's Call, about the future of this historic game. Cataldo told us a lot about AC's epic 100th update. The update is coming within the next few weeks, and it's a doozy. According to Cataldo, AC players will get a whole new faction system, three land areas to battle over, tons of new loot and spells, and various other improvements to the game, particularly to enemy AI.In addition to working its regular monthly event and patch schedule, Turbine is attempting to respond to player demand for a variety of new features in the 100th and all future updates. Particular emphasis is being placed on adding features common in modern MMOs, such as a quest tracking menu. AC has been around for almost ten years, so it has some catching up to do!Learn more about Turbine's big push to modernize the game, add lots of new content, and more in the interview after the break.
