HBO's free streaming includes 'The Wire' and its Theranos documentary
As efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus by encouraging social distancing stretch into another week, HBO has opened up its library for some free viewing. Not everything is available -- non-subscribers can't catch up on Game of Thrones yet -- but full series runs of standout shows like The Wire, The Sopranos, Veep and True Blood will be available at no cost starting tomorrow, April 3rd. Other options include documentaries like the good-but-stretched-to-fill-time McMillion$ and its Theranos documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley, as well as a few movies. The free streaming via HBO Now and HBO Go will be available "for a limited time," and occurs just as HBO's parent company WarnerMedia announced its new CEO -- former Hulu leader Jason Kilar -- and prepares to launch its assault on the streaming market with HBO Max. Not a bad time to get some good PR, reach out to potential customers and make sure that every single person knows how great The Wire is.
HBO Max will cost $14.99, and is a free upgrade to HBO Now subscribers
After two hours of listing content for the new HBO Max service and showing how its apps work, execs revealed the price when it launches in May next year will be $14.99 per month. If you're an AT&T customer with HBO, then it will be included for free, while TV, mobile and internet bundle customers will also get free access. You'll sign in with the same AT&T credentials used for your other accounts, and it will preload the app on AT&T Android phones.
Why are there so many TV streaming services?
The days of television streaming with limited choices are long gone. The list of options grows longer almost daily, and some big names have plans to launch new services that will further silo the content you want to watch. Exclusives are the new streaming currency, and to get everything you desire, you have to hand over a lot more money than you probably want to.
HBO Now is cutting the cord, but there are still a few strings
With the exception of some special internet offers, until now the (legit) way to get HBO has been straightforward -- order it from your cable company along with a big TV bundle. Today, Apple and HBO took a leap over that paywall by announcing their partnership to launch the internet-only HBO Now. The only problem? That combination brings its own set of restrictions, and if you want a way around them, then help could come from a most unlikely source: your cable company.
