Microsoft used magnets to make its Surface Laptop 3 more repairable
When Microsoft introduced the Surface Laptop 3 earlier this month, Chief Product Officer Panos Panay casually lifted its top assembly (the part that contains the keyboard) on stage to show that it was designed better than its predecessors. Now, iFixit's teardown has proven that it truly is quite easy to open the device, which could mean not just a more repairable laptop, but an overall better one compared to previous Surface devices.
Best Buy throws in a $50 gift card with the 15-inch Surface Laptop 3
If you're in the market for a good deal on a Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, you might want to check out Best Buy. The retailer is offering a $50 gift card with the system, which starts at $1,199. Best Buy is also throwing in a six-month Trend Micro Internet Security subscription worth $30. While it's not exactly a door crasher bargain, it certainly sweetens the deal.
The Surface Laptop 3 vs. the competition: 13-inch workhorses
It's October once more, which means we get to look at some new machines from Microsoft. We're long accustomed to the hybrid Surface Pro line but we're also seeing the third iteration of the company's powerful and stylish Surface Laptop. The 15-inch version packs an AMD Ryzen CPU, but the 13-inch is no slouch thanks to its 10th-gen Ice Lake chip, the better to compete with machines like the XPS 13. To see how the smaller Surface Laptop stacks up against some of the leading 13-inch machines on the market, check out the table below and read our hands-on while you wait for our full review of the new computer later this year.
Microsoft's Surface Laptop 3 packs a 10th-gen Intel CPU
Microsoft has good news if you just want a straightforward portable PC instead of one of its more exotic models: there's a new Surface Laptop in town. The Surface Laptop 3 shares much of the familiar design (more on that in a bit), but there's considerably more power under the hood. There's now a 15-inch model with special Surface Edition AMD Ryzen processors and Vega 11 graphics, for a start -- this won't be a hardcore gaming machine, but it should have some extra visual oomph. There are also quad-core 10th-generation Intel Ice Lake chips on the 13.5-inch, so you'll have some choices for computing power.
Microsoft will offer a 15-inch version of the Surface Laptop 3
For the first time, Microsoft plans to offer a 15-inch version of the Surface Laptop. Microsoft worked with AMD to develop a custom Ryzen mobile CPU for the 15-inch model. The company's Panos Panay claimed the Ryzen "Surface Edition" is the most powerful mobile CPU in a laptop available today, noting that it's three times faster than the underpowered 2018 MacBook Air. Depending on the model of AMD CPU, it comes with built-in Vega 9 or Vega 11 graphics. This won't make the 15-inch model into a gaming machine, but it'll work in a pinch when you want to play games like Fortnite and Overwatch. Alternatively, it's possible to outfit the 15-inch model with one of Intel's new 10th-gen Ice Lake chips.
We're live at Microsoft's Surface event!
We're kicking off another October full of anticipated gadget launches with Microsoft's Surface event, which is happening at 10AM ET today. Because no company is immune to the leak plague, we already know a lot about what to expect from Microsoft, including a new Surface Pro, an ARM-based Surface and an updated Surface Laptop. But that can't be all, right? We're hoping to see a dual-screen Surface, even if it's just a prototype. It'd also be nice if Microsoft dropped some earbuds, since companies like Amazon and Huawei have also recently unveiled wireless audio devices. Don't forget, Microsoft surprised us with new Surface headphones at this same event last year, so it's not too much of a stretch to expect new audio products.
New Microsoft Surface lineup leaks ahead of Wednesday's unveiling
Wondering what's in store for the Microsoft Surface event on Wednesday? Evan Blass has posted renderings of several devices, including a Surface Pro 7 that brings a USB-C connector instead of Mini DisplayPort, and 10th-gen Intel Core CPUs inside. He also pointed out an ARM CPU-powered Surface that's thinner than the usual Pro lineup with some seriously skinny bezels and probably aimed directly at Apple's iPad Pro.
Microsoft's Surface Laptop 3 may come in a 15-inch model
To date, you've had to buy a Surface Book 2 if you've wanted a Microsoft-made laptop larger than 13.5-inches. Soon, though, you might not have to spend quite so much to get a large surface. The historically accurate WinFuture claims that Microsoft will unveil a 15-inch flavor of the next Surface Laptop (presumably the Surface Laptop 3) at its October 2nd event. Most details aren't available at this stage, but Microsoft reportedly intends to preserve the taller-than-usual 3:2 screen aspect ratio like it did for the larger Surface Book.
Microsoft to host Surface-focused event on October 2nd
Microsoft has started sending out invites to an event the company will host early next month. The event will take place on October 2nd in New York City. Notably, that's the same date the company held its major 2018 fall hardware showcase. At that event, Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, Surface Studio 2 and the Surface Headphones.
