Happy milestone, Android Market! It's a busy place, full of hustle and bustle -- so much so, in fact, that the applications plaza for Google's mobile OS just had its ten billionth app downloaded. In honor of hitting this mark, it's passing the savings on to you, placing (at least) ten apps on sale for ten cents. The sale will last for ten days (notice a theme?), so procrastinators will have a little extra time to decide which ones are worth a dime. There's a few classics on the list, such as SwiftKey X, Minecraft, Asphalt 6 and SoundHound. Check the source link (or glance at the screenshot above) to see what else is available, as well as a press release straight from SwiftKey below the break. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Macworld sat down with Neon Play, the company behind the now-famous Paper Glider application. It was the game of choice for one of Gail Davis' teenage daughters who downloaded the app early Saturday morning. At that moment, Paper Glider became the App Store's 10 billionth download and earned itself a spot in the annals of Apple's history. Paper Glider is a simple, but very popular application that lets you fly a paper airplane using a hand-drawn trajectory and precisely timed taps to keep the plane in the air. Before its history-making download, the app topped the charts in the UK App Store and reached as high as #2 in the US. It has been downloaded over a million times. For Neon Play, Paper Glider is one of nine iOS games from the small iPhone games studio. Based in Cirencester, UK, Neon Play was founded last June by Oli Christie. The successful Flash developer quit his job in marketing and launched this growing company. Like any good managing director, Christie is going to capitalize on the PR blitz following Apple's 10 billion download promotion. "We're doing all we can to make the most of this one in 10 billion opportunity," he said in this Macworld interview. For the future, Neon Play is developing three new iOS apps and is looking to add new employees to keep up with its fast development cycle. As a growing company with over a million downloads under its belt and a place in Apple's history, the future looks bright for a company that is just over seven months old.

Now that the number of App Store downloads to iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads around the world has handily exceeded the population of Planet Earth, we can hopefully put this story to bed until they hit another factor of ten -- and as unreasonable as 100 billion downloads sounds, we'll bet it actually won't take that long. That's right: just a few days after kicking off its online counter, Apple's officially hit the 10 billion mark, which is a whole lot of software any way you slice it. So, Android Market, you're next? Update: The lucky winner was Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, who downloaded Paper Glider. PR after the break.

  • Apple nears ten billion downloads in App Store, should hit it without Verizon's help

For whatever reason, Apple has a thing with ten billion. The outfit served up its ten billionth iTune right around this time last year, and more importantly, served its one billionth app in April of 2009. In just 1.5 years, the company has seen that figure soar nearly tenfold, which is impressive no matter how you slice it. Of course, we're quite curious to know if this includes duplicate downloads, app updates and just free or paid apps, but regardless, there's no question that Cupertino (and quite a few developers) are raking it in. Of course, the explosion of the iPad certainly helped boost the download frequency, and if we had to guess, we'd say it'll take even less time to double up this milestone. You know, once next month happens. Oh, and if you get lucky enough, you could score a $10,000 iTunes gift card if you just so happen to download the ten billionth app -- make sure it's a good one. [Thanks, Ali]

Whether you love it or loathe it, there is now no way to deny the spectacular success of Apple's iTunes Store. The proprietary digital media player, organizer and salesperson has just now recorded its 10 billionth song download, marking a truly unique achievement in the still nascent world of digital distribution. Congratulations to Apple, whose response has been to thank you all for spending so much cash and making El Steve look like the techno pied piper. Hit the source link to find out what the most downloaded songs of "all time" were... you might not be surprised by the top three, but you should definitely be horrified.
