OK, just because the Samsung GT-S3500 slider may look like a really basic set, OK yeah, you're right, it is. While running a little on the homely side of the tracks, it does make use of stainless for the body, quad-band EDGE, has FM radio with RDS, 2 megapixel shooter, and a 2.2-inch display. Things like Bluetooth also find some space inside so wired headsets won't be your only recourse for safe talking on the go. Pricing seems set at 7500 rubles (roughly $200) and is apparently hitting the shops now, in Russia.

While most of us wait for "something really big" to land on Canada's Fido on July 11th, those looking for just the basics have one more option as of today. The Nokia 3500 candybar has arrived, packing Bluetooth, tri-band GSM connectivity, a microSD card slot, 2-megapixel camera, MP3 player and a battery good for up to four hours of straight yappin'. If that's plenty for you, it's available now for $100 sans a Fido agreement, $90 with a 2-year plan and just $15 with a mind-boggling 3-year contract.[Via MobileInCanada]

Get ready for a life more ordinary: Nokia just loosed three mid-range phones for all your middle management dreams. The 6267 (€240/$322) clamshell features dedicated music keys, a 2 megapixel camera with flash, 3G data, and up to 4GB of storage expansion you'll have to locate yourself. The 6121 classic (€260/$349) on the left goes quadband GSM and WCDMA 2100 and "900" (we presume is a Nokia typo meaning 1900) with HSDPA data and packs in a couple of cameras topping out at 2 megapixels. Bringing up the tail is the budget 3500 classic (€135/$181) candybar which ships with an FM radio, 2 megapixel camera, and about 3 hours of talk time or 12 days of standby. All are expected to ship by Q3 in quiet fulfillment of your prosaic ambitions.Update: Oh lord, the spec sheet is up and sure enough the 6121 goes WCDMA at 900MHz. That makes it one of, if not the first production caliber phone to do so. The lower frequency is meant to complement 2100MHz deployments by extending UMTS coverage in Europe.%Gallery-4060%

  • Nikon fesses up to new CCD malfunction problems

The Great CCD Failure of 2005 doesn't look like it's going to be Nikon's last. The camera manufacturer has just discovered a similar flaw in its Coolpix 5400, 5000, 4500 and 3500 shooters, and surprise, surprise, the manufacturing flaw is from the very same CCD manufacturer to blame for the last debacle. The official blame is on "CCD soldering degradation caused by aging" which means moisture and heat slowly wears down the CCD and kills the camera in its prime. Nikon got advanced warning of the problem by noticing an increase of malfunctions in a particularly hot and humid area in summer 2006. After some voluntary tests, Nikon noticed the CCD problem had reemerged, and is offering up free CCD replacements for victims -- like last time you might be seeing abnormal colors, distorted images or even no images. No word on how exactly to go about that, but we suppose Nikon isn't too terribly hard to track down.
